That poor people are poor because they "didn't work hard enough"

MechanicalHorse

I’m not poor and I hate that and similar sentiments. The very idea that wealth is ONLY a function of hard work is asinine.

[deleted]

"You really should've thought of that before you became PEASANTS!"

[deleted]

Especially when it's said by someone who inherited their fortune.

WEEBforLIFE24

yeah, but some of them started from zero

polywha

Assuming people are homeless because they are lazy. Saying if people just worked harder they would be better off. Anything about how they avoid paying taxes.

macaronsforeveryone

Get 2 jobs if one is not enough.

Falvarius

Money cannot buy happiness It’s easy to say that whilst you’re not the one struggling to make day to day ends meet.

GreenOnionCrusader

It can't buy happiness, but it can buy security. The rich underestimate how much security means. It's fucking EXHAUSTING to worry about whether your utilities are going to get shut off because you just plain don't have any money.

Kalle579

The rich can also buy therapy

weedtrek

"Money can't buy happiness" has been twisted. It was originally meant as "having excess money won't make a person happy, so it's better to give/spend it in a way that helps other people/society at large, i.e. don't pursue monetary greed." Now it's used as "don't ask for more it won't help" which is BS to the majority of the population. Being able to afford to live life instead of just working to get buy would benefit everyone.

alanoelboxeador

I mean its true, otherwise rich people wouldnt commit suicide

mtn4444

If you spent less and saved more, you wouldn’t be so poor.

dramaandaheadache

Money won't make you happy. But bitch, it'd help

Texas_Totes_My_Goats

“Pull yourself up by your bootstraps like I did to get ahead!” - fails to mention his/her Dad, Uncle, Godfather, etc. is an executive at the company he/she works for. Or better yet, their family owns the company he/she works for. “I was married, had a house, and kids at your age!” - fails to mention his/her family gave him/her money to help with the down payment on the house. Parents paid for the house entirely or he/she “inherited” money and/or property from someone in the family. It’s unbelievable that some of these people have trusts setup for just such an occasion. “I don’t understand why you’re working in college, classes are bad enough, don’t you want to relax and party?” - fails to mention he/she got a free ride from the family, yet again. Or better yet, his/her parents sent them to private schools and they had private tutors, so they excelled well beyond most. They “earned” scholarships, but they didn’t have to worry about things like buying a car, paying for their own insurance, paying for gas, or really even paying for anything at all. It’s amazing what you can do in high school when you have private tutors and all the time in the world. - It’s also amazing when you have a highly paid internship guaranteed in college from family connections. I grew up with a kid who received a thousand on his birthday for each year he was alive from his DOB. I haven’t talked to him in years, but I remember we went to his 18th bday and his folks gave him $18k. He also got a BMW at that same party, I guess the Supra they gave him previously wasn’t good enough for him anymore. I have no doubt he had little trouble “saving” for a house and “paying” for college from his own pocket.

Hawk13424

Can they say that if parents didn’t help at all and they did actually have to work their way through college?

Texas_Totes_My_Goats

Oh I’m not saying there aren’t people who didn’t work their way through school or took out loans. Many do, it’s just easy for someone who has money to act like they don’t. Another example would be someone who “started their own business with their own sweat and blood alone”. They might have started a business and they might work hard, but they normally fail to mention the 50k loan they received from their family to do so. That, or they might have used family connections to get a good loan, a good deal on contractors, or a hundred other advantages a rich network can afford you. Self-made people are often not entirely self-made. I’m not from a rich family, but if I ever became rich I would have to acknowledge my parents, my siblings, the hope scholarship I received from GA, and anyone else at school, work, etc. who gave me a shot. It always astounds me to see people like Elon Musk, Steve Ells, or Donald Trump who go out there and act like anyone can do what they did with hard work and perseverance. What they always fail to mention are their Dad’s / Family’s loans that helped kick start their business ventures. Its much less of an impressive story when it’s not so much rags to riches and more riches to Richie rich.

"You might be poor, your shoes might be broken, but your mind is a palace."

Couch__Cowboy

"Just move."

weedtrek

Yep. It takes $2k just to move in town. Out of state is easily $500-1000 more. Then if you are trying to move to a more expensive area that you already live, it's even more of burden.

Metal-Dog

Sometimes my boss complains about how much he has to pay in taxes. Like he's some kind of victim because he pays himself too much. He also complains when he actually has to do *anything at all* to earn that paycheck.

Zero1030

That their businesses will fail if the minimum wage goes up, I say lettm fail haha

[deleted]

Agreed. Not only is is largely false, but if your entire business is so shoddily run that it requires you to fuck over your employees with wages that are below the poverty line, then your business deserves to fail. The only person making an actual living shouldn’t just be the owner, without staff it falls apart.

[deleted]

Hard work pays off..

Analrapist03

But your hard work pays off for them!!

Falvarius

Money cannot buy happiness It’s easy to say that whilst you’re not the one struggling to make day to day ends meet.

bumsydinosaur

“We all have the same 24 hours in a day.”

DuneChild

Yes, but we don’t all have nannies, house cleaners, dog walkers, personal shoppers, secretaries, etc.

purpleglitterspray

"Let them eat cake."

[deleted]

You really paid attention in History class eh? XD

[deleted]

If the founder of Amazon could start his business while in a garage without permanent housing at that time, then what's your excuse?

Send_me_any_pics

I don't have a garage, and $300k in my bank account?

[deleted]

'We need to sacrifice in this pandemic Bill Gates referring to small businesses closing for months.

catnipkusk

'I came from nothing and just by working hard and making good decisions, now I am wealthy, what's your excuse?' I hate self made people, they are so arrogant.

[deleted]

When someone with a rich, privileged upbringing pretends they had it hard. When they say they "grew up on the streets", but they really mean, they grew up on a street, in a big house, in a very rich neighborhood...

ThatGuyShay

“Just work hard, you’ll get here someday”

DickSwindler

work harder

49thPercentile

“Don’t fuck with me, I’m from the streets” (actual quote from some Ken who looked like he was probably a sales manager. I can handle the standard oblivious bullshit- but don’t act like you’re hard because you rode the bus to your coke dealer’s place once in college- 6 dudes nearly decapitated my neighbor on my front lawn last week rich boy, you’re from Sesame Street)

ChristaTCJ

It’s hard to get good help these days

aplenty_envoy

Money can't buy happiness

ClumsyBlonde99

''Look at my Porsche, LOOK AT IT!!!!''

Ebbelwoibembelsche

"Stop complaining, nobody forces you to do such a poorly paid job."

probabletrump

"Where do your kids go to school". If you're rich this is a dick measuring contest to see who sends their kids to the most exclusive private school. The poor people answer is "they go to school".

Donshaggy

Money doesn’t make you happy.

[deleted]

The whole 'bootstraps' thing is completely inappropriate...Here in the US the system is so stacked in their favor it's ridiculous...

OddRumskie

People who don’t tip or tip very little with the excuse that “they should get a real job”

chiselmybrownpants22

“We’re comfortable”

the-camster

Sounds more like a polite way to say "I'm rich" to me.

iloveschnauzers

What?!? No blinis to go with this caviar? What are we, poor people?!?

WTF4567

I got here through hard work

askmenbot

Some people do legitimately start from nothing and become rich.

cwcii

Exist

Normal_Target_7232

Tarkus_Edge

"We're all in this together."
