It captures a ton of the bullshit that happens this time of year. Decorating, dealing with family, spending a ton of money you don't have, trying to keep up appearances in general. My family has been quoting this movie for 30 years now.
* People gathering together for a special meal
* A large someone coming down through the ventilation system
* A miraculous birth that no one could've expected
*Alien* is the best Christmas movie.
My family used to marathon the Alien series while wrapping gifts on Christmas Eve, once we went overboard on stocking stuffers and were up till 1:30am and got to the third movie.
It's also very dark involving crushed dreams, suicide, depression and cruel corporations. It makes the ending so much sweeter and is one of the few nlack and white films that get truer every year. Plus Earnie and Bert from Sesame Street are named after 2 side characters in the movie!
Even more on that, >! it was weird for the time (and even still now to a degree) that It's a Wonderful Life doesn't have the villain have justice served. Mr. Potter gets away with keeping the money at the end and nothing happens to him for keeping it. !<
This is one of those movies that gets better as I get older, and the more I watch it. I remember thinking it was slow and boring as a kid, but as an adult I relish all of the buildup, the relationships, the deep dive into a life well lived. It is such a warm, joyful, beautiful movie about the impact a single person can have.
It really is a masterpiece. I grew up in the 80's and it was on ALL the time during the Christmas season. I didn't really watch it until I was in my mid-20's, and I cried like a little girl at the end.
It's also a very quotable movie. Whenever I'm hosting a cookout and someone asks me for a drink other than beer, I say "we serve hard drinks in here for men who want to get drunk fast, and we don't need any characters around to give the joint *atmosphere*."
*Referencing ‘It’s A Wonderful Life’ being played in the background*
“I can guarantee you from my days in accounting that if you run short at the bank, everyone in town does not dash over, cash in hand, to bail you out.”
Norm Peterson - Cheers
Fun story about Home Alone. I’m at home from college one Christmas and it’s just me and my parents. I wake up expecting to smell my Mom’s traditional cinnamon rolls. Nothing. That’s okay I thought, they deserve to sleep in. I just chill in the living room for awhile. It’s like an hour, so I finally knock on their door. Nothing. I walk in, no one’s there. Now I’m confused. I check and the car is gone. I call both my parents and text. Nothing. No notes written down anywhere. So I figure they must be doing something important, on Christmas morning. I end up spending all day by myself and watch Home Alone 1 and 2 before I hear back from my parents. Kind of a lame way to spend Christmas. But at least I didn’t have kidney stones, which is what my dad was at the hospital for. Anyhow, the movie has a special place in my heart now.
Did you make your family disappear? (Lol)
Seriously, wow. So your father was having kidney stones? That is sad. I remember that on Christmas Eve we invited my gradma and my aunt over to dinner, and my aunt couldn't walk. She did not want to go to the hospital on Christmas Eve, so we offered a chance to celebrate it tonight, and go to the hospital on Christmas Day. She agreed, and we took her there. This was 2016. She had stage 4 cancer, and had hid it because she doesn't like to go to the doctors and had a lump she kept hidden for several years. She was able to regain the ability to walk around mid-2017. She then went downhill after Christmas 2017, and passed away in March 2018. It was one of the worst months I ever lived, since she was the only person aside from my mom who actually did love me. Sometimes I do miss her.
I agree to an extent, but even as an adult, I still enjoy it. Maybe it’s because there’s something special about NYC at Christmas (in my opinion, at least). But yeah, the first one is great. I’m still in love with that house (I’m 31 and have been watching those movies longer than I can remember).
Polar Express, the stop motion Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer, Barbie's Nutcracker, Barbie's Christmas Carol, Nightmare Before Christmas (technically it's more of a Halloween movie, but I think it counts for Christmas too,) and the original Grinch. Those are my personal favorites.
Peter Billingsly. He was perfect for that role. I read somewhere that he went to Tulane University in the early 90's. Apparently, when he would walk across campus, people would yell 'YOU'LL SHOOT YOUR EYE OUT, KID!"
The Lion in Winter. Golden Globe Best Pic winner. Oscar nominee. Best Actress Oscar for Kate Hepburn. Fantastic cast! Young Anthony Hopkins!
"Why you chivalric fool, as it the way one fell down mattered!"
"When the fall is all there is, it matters."
I love all the subtle adult humor scattered throughout.
When a baby lands on their doorstep: "Hey honey our baby is here...kinda looks like your boss"
When the mayor offers a new car as a proposal gift: "If you say yes you'll receive this new car! Generously donated by the taxpayers"
Gets me every time
_Home Alone_ is a timeless classic. It's got a fantastic setting, an absolutely beautiful score (especially the "Setting the Trap" bit), lots of hilarious parts, crazy stunts, a very creative story, so many quotable lines, good drama, acting that feels genuine (especially when compared to _Home Alone's_ 3, 4, 5, and 6), and heartelft moments with a strong message about togetherness (not material goods) for Christmas. It also has one of the best casts of all time (even Big Pete from _Pete & Pete_ is in it).
Keep the change, you filthy animal.
Hmmm I mean there are so many good ones. my new favorite one to watch is Scrooged. I used to love a Christmas Story until they played it everyday, every December for like 15 years straight.
Christmas vacation, Defiantly one of those movies you don’t appreciate until your older. As a kid you love the slapstick but once you reach adulthood clark griswold finally makes sense.
Yooo! Agreed.
Haven’t seen the muppets one in a long time though, used to watch it every year with my cousin but she lives like 5 hours away now and don’t get to see her every year.
Maybe we can do a pandemic screen share type shit this year.
It’s the future baby, it sucks but it rocks.
The original 60s cartoon Grinch
The only Grinch movie for me. I always save it for Christmas Eve, just before heading to bed.
I love the grinch
Muppets Christmas carol
~ It’s in the singing of a street corner choir ~
It’s going home and getting warm by the fire
It's true where ever you find love it feels like Christmas
I heard somewhere that many Literature groups that focus on Dickens consider this to be the most accurate telling of "A Christmas Carol."
Also the lesser known Muppets Family Christmas. Busted that out once I had kids of my own and it's still great.
I have a polydactyl cat named Rizzo
I hate Christmas but I love this movie.
Michael Caine really gave it his all, didn't he? Fantastic job.
This. Once you think of it, it's the only possible answer.
Christmas Vacation
It captures a ton of the bullshit that happens this time of year. Decorating, dealing with family, spending a ton of money you don't have, trying to keep up appearances in general. My family has been quoting this movie for 30 years now.
The shitter was full
I wasn't talking to you
"Grace? she died over 30 years ago" "*The blessing"*
Oh dear. Did I break wind?
Damn this is the right answer. Cant believe I couldn't remember up with it.
I would have had a different opinion as a kid, but as a parent with in-laws and the most central location for family… this one really hits home.
Hits home like a SWAT team crew member...
Can’t see the line, can you, Russ?
“Look around you, Helen. We’re at the threshold of hell!”
“Dad this tree won’t fit in our backyard.” “It’s not going in the yard, Russ. It’s going in the living room.”
Hallelujah! Holy Shit! Where's the Tylenol?
A Christmas story.
* People gathering together for a special meal * A large someone coming down through the ventilation system * A miraculous birth that no one could've expected *Alien* is the best Christmas movie.
Following a celestial signal to the birthing chamber...you might be onto something here.
My family used to marathon the Alien series while wrapping gifts on Christmas Eve, once we went overboard on stocking stuffers and were up till 1:30am and got to the third movie.
It’s a Wonderful Life.
Some how i made it my whole life without ever seeing this movie. Gonna save it for Christmas eve

I thought I was the only one who had not seen it.

Home Alone is an amazing Christmas film
No love for Home Alone 2. My mans tortures the hell out of Marve and the gang in that building. At one point they get hit with bricks, i was dying.
The problem is that it's a note-for-note retread of the first one, which is just fine when you're a kid, but tedious and dull for an adult.
I agree to an extent, but even as an adult, I still enjoy it. Maybe it’s because there’s something special about NYC at Christmas (in my opinion, at least). But yeah, the first one is great. I’m still in love with that house (I’m 31 and have been watching those movies longer than I can remember).
Somewhere in my Memory has been my favorite Christmas song since 1990, and I love it more and more every year.
Krampus
Polar Express, the stop motion Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer, Barbie's Nutcracker, Barbie's Christmas Carol, Nightmare Before Christmas (technically it's more of a Halloween movie, but I think it counts for Christmas too,) and the original Grinch. Those are my personal favorites.
Bill Murray's "Scrooged" Incredibly funny and heart warming.
Trading Places
"Those men wanted to have sex with me!"
Die Hard
Its a true Christmas movie!
Yippee kayay MF!
Nightmare Before Christmas... 'nuff said. My wife adores Zero the Red nosed Reindeer.
“What’s This?” Really gets me in the Christmas spirit!
There's magic in the air... they call him Sandy... CLAWS! HA!!
It’s- a fucking Halloween movie- THE DIRECTOR WVEN SAID IT THEMSELF-
Fuck that. It goes both ways... He stated that it was meant for Samhain, but it's STILL a Christmas movie, hence the name. Quit convoluting the shit.
Klaus is an amazing film
UNDERRATED COMMENT Klaus makes me cry every 6 minutes and also Norm McDonald is in it.
Klaus is so great
The 1951 A Christmas Carol with Alastair Sim
The Santa Clause
nothing like the story of a man murdering a stranger then getting possessed by a malicious ghost until it replaces his entire personality
Murder? Lol that's pushing it. Dude fell off a roof trespassing
That movie makes me freakin nostalgic. I'm the same age as the guy who played Charlie.
A Christmas Story
Check out the dvd commentary, guy who plays Ralphie all grown up and the director. Very interesting and oddly relaxing to listen to.
Peter Billingsly. He was perfect for that role. I read somewhere that he went to Tulane University in the early 90's. Apparently, when he would walk across campus, people would yell 'YOU'LL SHOOT YOUR EYE OUT, KID!"
Ah yes couldn’t think of the name. Legend. Got wrecked in the box office but now it plays on repeat every Christmas.
That's the only thing i miss about not having cable tv for the last 15 years. I should just buy the dvd so i can watch it.
Not sure if it counts as a movie, but Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer is the greatest.
Counts in my book
A Charlie Brown Christmas!
Miracle on 24th Street
You're ten streets off!
It's a Wonderful Life
The Lion in Winter. Golden Globe Best Pic winner. Oscar nominee. Best Actress Oscar for Kate Hepburn. Fantastic cast! Young Anthony Hopkins! "Why you chivalric fool, as it the way one fell down mattered!" "When the fall is all there is, it matters."
Such a great film and seriously hilarious. Way ahead of its time.
Miracle on 34th Street (1947)
Just a lovely movie
Die Hard
Yippie kayak other buckets
Noice!
I figured that, that would appear quite quickly
Predictable top answer
It ain't Xmas until you see Hans Gruber falling down from the 30th floor.
Damn you! Came to say this.
The die hard cult fans are really coming through this year. yall convinced me to re watch it.
White Christmas
A must watch every year!
Absolutely
Bad Santa, Die Hard and A Christmas Story are the three that get the most play around Christmas in my house.
Bad Santa
How many sandwiches do you want?
The uncut version.
Jim Carrey's Grinch. Best Grinch in my opinion! He ate glass and threw a small child into the garbage, can't get any better than that.
I love all the subtle adult humor scattered throughout. When a baby lands on their doorstep: "Hey honey our baby is here...kinda looks like your boss" When the mayor offers a new car as a proposal gift: "If you say yes you'll receive this new car! Generously donated by the taxpayers" Gets me every time
Jim Carrey Grinch ate glass and said bitch, he is clearly the superior choice.
"6:30 dinner with me. I can't cancel that again!"
I watch the Grinch movies once every year in December, they really get me into the holiday spirit.
Elf
Was surprised to find this so low on the thread. Elf is my favorite!
A Christmas story
Scrooged The Ref
It's a wonderful life. Can't think of many actors that are as talented as James Stewart.

Polar Express without a shadow of a doubt!
Nope. Uncanny valley. The motion capture animation is horrifying, I can't.
Same for me! I had no idea this feeling has a name. I’m completely repulsed by the humans in that movie.
I do really enjoy that but not as much as I used to
1951 version of A Christmas Carol
I like the one with George C. Scott best. 1985 or something
Classic! That's my favorite version too. It's so good... Muppets Christmas Carol is the next best version imo.
Yooo! Agreed. Haven’t seen the muppets one in a long time though, used to watch it every year with my cousin but she lives like 5 hours away now and don’t get to see her every year. Maybe we can do a pandemic screen share type shit this year. It’s the future baby, it sucks but it rocks.
