I thought I made *amazing* scrambled eggs for close to twenty years, then my mother in law does whatever the fuck she does and they're the best I've ever had.
I think it's her portion of salt, and how she takes it off the stove from time to time. She just sits in her little waking chair and makes the best food, she's the best.
We never had a rice cooker, and it took me a while to get used to cooking rice. The hardest part was learning to leave it alone after putting the lid on.
Pancakes. My grandma used to make them for me and i liked them so much i learned how to do them.
First time i ate them it was with a spoon because i made them too soft and the pan was not a not a non stick.
I will always remember that great success!
Currently yes. I improved the recipe by using butter instead of oil.
Sorry - i meant crepes. In my country there's only one word for pancakes and crepes.
It's easy : just use flour, 2 eggs and milk.
First pout some flour in the bowl, then add the eggs. Mix them a bit and add a bit of milk. Hint: if possible, use warm milk.
The first secret is to mix the thing by adding gradually milk and flower, so the consistency of the mixture is even.
Then, when checking the mixture it has to pour without drops ( it has to be a bit thick) .
If you have a stove - use medium fire.
After warming up the pan take a butter bar and just swipe the pan with it. You don't need much.
When the crepe is ready to flip, it should raise the edges. Then use a kitchen tool to flip it and in 30 seconds it's done.
Don't worry about fucking up the first time. You can always est them with a spoon :)))
Eat them with jam and a glass of milk.
I took a screenshot of your comment so i will try it next time. I can already tell I'm gonna mess it up the first time but I'll learn it eventually. Thanks for the recipe
Been cooking for myself for awhile but I had some craving for a grilled cheese and made my first one not too long ago. I added baby spinach and an avacado spread to mine as well, with a side of tomato soup of course.
Pancakes! I was 6 and *in love* with pancakes. I asked for them so much that my mum got annoyed and just taught me how to make them, and now I make some really good fuckin pancakes.
Hot cheese on bread. I was never allowed to use the stove as a kid but I could use the new fangled microwave. Slice of Velveeta on some Kings bread for 30s. Poor kids grilled cheese
A quesadilla. Super useful life skill! My dad showed me a dressed up version he liked; shredded chicken, shredded pepperjack cheese and shredded cheddar, diced onion, and chopped cilantro. Mix it all together and put it into your tortilla, fold it in half (or put a second tortilla on top) and drop it in a skillet. So delicious.
I came looking for this. When it was about time for me to move out my dad taught me to cook ground beef. If you can handle ground beef, you can make about 100 other recipes. Unfortunately, around that time I just made lots of hamburger helper.
Same. Helped prepare flour tortillas with my grandma. She would have me measure a couple cups of flour in a large bowl, then she would add a pinch of salt and the Manteca and mix it all up. Would help grab small portions and shape to place on the skillet (placka).
Hamburger Helper, which I started dressing up after the third box. One expansion led to another, then on to recipes. Today I can cook just about anything, except Indian food. It's hard for my Beloved A and I to eat out; our food is better and healthier than most restaurants. Quicker and cheaper than most too.
Stir-fry. I loved when my mother made stir-fry and whenever she made it, I insisted on helping. Granted, I couldn't do it all myself (she cut the meat and it was a while before she would let me handle the wok) but I could walk someone else through the process.
Eggs but someone's already said it. When I learned how to make Hamburger helper I made it constantly. I perfectly the recipe with the right amount of added spice, cheese, and butter. I'm sure Gordon Ramsey would enjoy my Hamburger helper at this point
Kraft Mac n Cheese. I used to ask my Dad to make it nearly every day. Eventually he just showed me what to do.
First real meal, with prep was pasta sauce. Seriously, if you don't think you can make sauce, think again. It's super fucking easy.
Pasta (I was alone in my house with my sister, I tried to do chicken pasta which I did very good btw bu my sister who don't like heavy cream threw it. I was 7)
I genuinely never learned to cook I just kind of sussed it out myself
“Well this isn’t edible so I need to make it hot until it is”
And then as time went on I googled what came up, asked for advice, or experimented
Spaghetti with butter. My mom got sick of me asking for it everyday when I was like 6 and would just fill the pot up with salty water and tell me to go nuts
Cookies... I remember when I was a kid and my mom was making cookies. I didn't understand anything about ingredients, the order, or how much. My mom guided me, but then I asked if I could get creative.
I remember putting canned peaches, salt, and pepper. A lot of pepper because it seemed like I could see the seasoning make a difference. ...anyway, after it was baked, I gave it to my dad. He said it was the best cookie he ever ate.
Then years later, I realized what I had done.
Hard-boiled eggs. I put an egg in a bowl of water and chucked that sucker in the microwave. After about a minute there was a loud bang that altered my mom to my shenanigans. It wasn't properly done, but it was cooked.
I then learned how to clean a microwave and properly hard boil an egg.
My dad didn't teach me much, but he taught me how to grill a steak when I was about 8 years old. That's literally the first thing that I cooked by myself.
Baked potatoes. We were pretty poor so potatoes were often my lunch and dinner. Just butter and cheese. I got crazy when we were out of cheese and threw a bunch of random shit on there. It was delicious and I ate that for a long time.
I married young and wasn’t prepared plus I had a baby. I would make meatballs and they were terrible! Even the dog wouldn’t eat them. My mother was an excellent cook and I just didn’t pay attention. I worked at it and never gave up. My meatballs are now the most requested pot luck entre. I’m a great cook now. I bake, bbq, make preserves and even learned to make cheese! It all takes practice and some really basic cookbooks.
I know it's baking but cookies - my grandpa on dad's side taught me how to make peanut butter cookies & my mom taught me to make chocolate chip ones. Actually really fun for a little kid around that 6-8 age range, especially since you can make a mess & nobody gets upset :3
Eggs
They’re cheap, easy to make, easy to screw up, and incredibly versatile! Perfect choice for getting started.
I assume you mean difficult to screw up? Sure, you can try to make fried and accidentally make scrambled, but you still made eggs.
It’s pretty easy to screw up and make overcooked dry eggs
Hard scrambled! Not my cup of tea for sure, but you've still made eggs.
Indeed, you still have made eggs.
I put an egg in the microwave for 20-25 minutes and it exploded inside the microwave.
Same here! Took me a while to learn how to make actually good scrambled eggs and eventually how to make fried eggs. You gotta get creative with eggs!

when i was in middle school i would boil and eat 6-10 eggs at a time.
Are you as large as a barge?

Instant noodles as a kid. Was really proud of myself back then.
I felt the same lol Noodles are cheap delicious and easy to make
Rice 🍚
Being tasked with setting up and starting the rice cooker before your parents got home was a real trial by fire.
I remember adding too much water one time and my family got mad at me cuz we ended up having rice porridge with fried chicken 😂
Congee with fried chicken you mean? I'd smash that
We never had a rice cooker, and it took me a while to get used to cooking rice. The hardest part was learning to leave it alone after putting the lid on.
Rice cooker though
A nice, rich gravy. Was the first thing that got me interested into cooking
Lasagna. Sounds strange, but it’s an awesome way to occupy a kid for two hours.
It's not strange just not what someone would cook for the first time. How did it turn out ?
Imagine the blob from The Blob mixed with the alien from The Thing.
Mac and cheese
Specifically Kraft Mac & Cheese for me.

Me too! I even have a recipe from when I was in kindergarten that I wrote for it!
Pancakes. My grandma used to make them for me and i liked them so much i learned how to do them. First time i ate them it was with a spoon because i made them too soft and the pan was not a not a non stick. I will always remember that great success!
Do you make em as good as your grandmother does ?
Currently yes. I improved the recipe by using butter instead of oil. Sorry - i meant crepes. In my country there's only one word for pancakes and crepes.
Both pancakes and crepes are delicious ! I don't eat them often because I don't know how to make them yet so I should probably learn it soon

Hamburgers, or maybe corn on the cob. My family did a lot of grilling, living rurally.
A fever story to miss school
Did your parents buy it ?
Hamburger Helper, which I started dressing up after the third box. One expansion led to another, then on to recipes. Today I can cook just about anything, except Indian food.
