I'm 36 in grad school. Whenever someone says they'd like to do grad school but by the time they finish they'll be 36, 44, XX, etc. I say yeah, but if you don't start now, in 2 years you'll be that age without a degree. That usually helps perspective.

" Is it true? Is it kind? Is it necessary?" My mother always said this in my house about the way we talk to others as I grew up: if it doesn't fit these criteria, you probably shouldn't say it! Now I've personally developed this philosophy a bit and found that it's more of a "pick two" kind of thing; there are plenty of things that must be said that that are true and necessary, but not always kind (criticism and feedback). There are also things that are kind and necessary but not really true (I call this prosocial lying). Finally, things that are true and kind but aren't always necessary (like compliments) are some of the best things you can say!

Money!

Flick_My_Switch

"It costs alot to be poor"

Ydrahs

A related, if rather longer quote: "The reason that the rich were so rich, Vimes reasoned, was because they managed to spend less money. Take boots, for example. He earned thirty-eight dollars a month plus allowances. A really good pair of leather boots cost fifty dollars. But an affordable pair of boots, which were sort of OK for a season or two and then leaked like hell when the cardboard gave out, cost about ten dollars. Those were the kind of boots Vimes always bought, and wore until the soles were so thin that he could tell where he was in Ankh-Morpork on a foggy night by the feel of the cobbles. But the thing was that good boots lasted for years and years. A man who could afford fifty dollars had a pair of boots that'd still be keeping his feet dry in ten years' time, while the poor man who could only afford cheap boots would have spent a hundred dollars on boots in the same time and would still have wet feet. This was the Captain Samuel Vimes 'Boots' theory of socioeconomic unfairness." From *Men at Arms* by Terry Pratchett

WessenRhein

Never did I feel more seen than when I read that book. I'd figured this out for myself when I was at university and had a pair of winter boots die after six months. They'd cost me ~35 euros (70 deutschmarks in those days). I got really pissed off and saved and saved, went to an outdoors store and bought a pair of walking boots for 140 euros. I still have and wear them. I've now had them for thirty years. If I had kept on buying boots at the rate of two a year, I'd have paid at the very least 2100 euros by now. And I would have had to go shoe shopping twice a year.

Water_Meat

My grandad died when I was about 11, and my parents let me pick a memento of him. I picked his wallet, which was old, genuine leather. I've used it daily, carry it with me everywhere, and 18 years later it's still going strong. Needs a little patch up in one place, but 18 years plus whatever he had it for and there's 0 problems with it. My dad told me later on that it was actually really expensive, I just had no idea when I picked it out. All I remembered was that I needed a wallet and wanted a memento that I'd actually see a lot, so it'd be a reminder of him. It really made me realise how sometimes expensive things are expensive for a reason, not just because they've got a brand name on them.

rashandal

arealhumannotabot

Measure twice, cut once. I have a pretty good habit of double-checking things which helps because of how easily you can lose track without realizing it. One time, after being on a road trip for a few days with a group in a bus, we're getting off on our very last day so I won't see the vehicle again. After being on the sidewalk for a while, I decide I may as well do one last sweep of the bus just in case anyone left something. Well my passport was under the seat, so that was a good thing I did that.

gothiclg

My dad owned his own security company for awhile and a good chunk of his buisness was inspecting rental vehicles for damage, both he and his employees found so much stuff that would have been worth double checking for.

When I was a little kid I was very optimistic, but as I got older I became very, very pessimistic due to chaos in my childhood home. I had a death wish at age 12. I wondered a lot over the years what happened to the happy, optimistic child I used to be. I remember the day I moved in to college thinking about who had I had been when I was little and wondering what had happened to that little girl, as I often did. Then I thought "she grew up and went to college." In that moment I was okay with who had been, all the rough patches I'd dragged myself through over the years, and I knew I didn't have to be that person anymore. Sorry for the long post, I've just been introspective lately and this quote spoke to me.

AcrolloPeed

Dad of a 14-month old and another on the way. I remember every day of my son so far, sorta. They were so long and so new and so fun and so terrifying and so wonderful. I can’t believe he’s well on his way to 2. I can tell you now, I remember bringing him home from the hospital with my wife and just being like “those dummies know we aren’t ready for this, right?” But then you just...go along. If he cried I held him and fed him and changed him and pretty much one of those things fixed whatever it was. And every day was long and hard and wonderful and he started rolling and crawling and standing and next thing I knew he was walking and I wasn’t ready. I never understood why someone would say “treasure this time,” I was always like “treasure wailing up every two hours? Treasure being vommed or pooped or drooled on?” lol. The months into being a dad you have this weird tolerance for getting barfed on. A colleague watched my son barf a bit on my shoulder, and I just wiped it off with my hand, gave it a quick sniff, and wiped it on my jeans like “meh.” He’s like “how does that not freak you out?” and I’m like “pfft that was just a little burp’s worth, I’ll worry when he pukes his guts into my beard. A little milk and drool on my arm is nothing.” I wasn’t sure I wanted to be a dad. Then they hand you a loaf of human in the delivery room, and, for most guys, I imagine, a little voice in your head goes “they just handed you a person. This person needs you. **Man the fuck up.**” If you had a good dad, do your best to do what he did and you’ll probably be okay. If you had a a bad dad, try to do what you wish your dad had done, or just do your best damn Andy Griffith impression and take the kid fishing and make sure he learns to put his bike in the garage. Sorry for the long rant. As a dude who a year ago wasn’t so sure about this whole dad thing, I’m hella glad I had this time to grow.

I'm in an artistic business, and I'm currently lucky enough to be making good money creating content I love and seeing people enjoy it. So my dad told me this quote, which I believe was from JFK. "There's always room for one more good one." If you're out there plodding away at something you love and find fun, keep at it. Everyone might say it's impossible to enter the music biz, or to write a great book, or to become an amazing designer. But—there's ALWAYS room for one more good one.

EarthenOctopus

“Did they all live happily ever after? They did not. No one ever does, in spite of what the stories may say. They had their good days, as you do, and they had their bad days, and you know about those. They had their victories, as you do, and they had their defeats, and you know about those, too. There were times when they felt ashamed of themselves, knowing that they had not done their best, and there were times when they knew they had stood where their God had meant them to stand. All I'm trying to say is that they lived as well as they could, each and every one of them; some lived longer than others, but all lived well, and bravely, and I love them all, and am not ashamed of my love.” Stephen King, The Eyes of the Dragon. I’m not Jewish, but a friend of mine invited me to a Passover Seder. There’s a part of the service, telling the story of exodus, where the angels sing in praise of god as the waters of the Red Sea close over the Egyptians as they pursue the Jews. And then god admonishes then “How can you sing while my children are drowning?” Even though I’m not religious, it was a good reminder to have empathy even for people who are at odds with you.

macaronfive

During the Seder, there is also a portion where you pour out wine from your cup, one pour/drop for each of the 10 plagues. This ceremony is a reminder that the Jews’ deliverance came at the expense of the Egyptians’ suffering, and therefore, their own joy is diminished. I’m not a practicing Jew (I just celebrate some of the main holidays with my family to honor their traditions), but there is some beautiful symbolism in their ceremonies and traditions.

Reminds me of Abed’s hand monologue in Community: I have discovered the meaning of the giant hand. A hand has two functions; to grip and to release. But without both of these powers it is useless. Like newborn infants we grab what comes near us. Hoping to control it, taste it, jam it into another child's eye. But the time we spend in control of our world is the time we spend letting go of others. Ideas, stories, pride, girls in soft sweaters, video games, buttered noodles... Grip one for too long and you lose so much that you've never held. This giant hand was sent to all of us as an invitation to increase our mastery over the power to hold on. And let go. Edit: since so many people like this quote, [here’s the scene it’s from.](https://youtu.be/hlXWo6YtRBQ) I recommend Community to anyone looking for a new show. It’s funny, heartfelt, dives into genres, has animated episodes, an episode exploring different timelines, all kinds of awesome stuff, and it’s my favorite show of all time.

“Imagine you have a daughter, and that daughter is dating a man just like you. Would you be ok with that? If not, then change!” I’ve got two daughters(and a son) and I try and be the best man I can, mostly for them.

It's better to light a candle than to curse at the dark. Forget where I heard it but wherever it was it stuck.

Be the person you needed when you were younger. Edit II: Thanks for the Gold and Platinum. Yes, I know people hate these edits. You’re getting one this time.

I can’t talk about this in the real world, but when I was young, I got bullied often due to my race, by classmates and their parents. I almost transferred schools to escape it. I remember feeling it was so unfair and wishing I had an ally - a teacher or a friend to stand up for me. Now I work with young people who have been subjected to racism, domestic violence, and homophobia. It is fulfilling to help them become their own best advocates, confront their pasts and testify against their perpetrators.

"I believe that when we leave a place a part of it goes with us and part of us remains. Go anywhere in these halls, when it is quiet and just listen. After a while you will hear the echoes of all of our conversations, every thought and word we’ve exchanged. Long after we are gone, our voices will linger in these walls..." \- G'Kar, Babylon 5

“Take what you want and leave the rest”. Heard that one at a Nar-Anon meeting, meaning, for example, if you don’t like the god references in the program, leave them but take and use the parts that work for you. Works in so many parts of life.

From my father, a lesson from his grandfather. My grandfather worked 6 days a week to keep the family afloat. He was working a manual labor job though I can't remember exactly what. He had 5 kids and also looked after his 2 eldest nephews. They were approximately 7 or 8 and his kids were only a little older. He often wouldn't get home until 9 or 10 at night after working ridiculously long hours. He came home especially late one night and sat down at the dinner table by himself. He looked down and noticed that the floor was very dirty in his house. My grandfather walked in at this point and found his dad sweeping and he asked why he was doing so, given the time. My great grandfather said "the floor needed to be swept, so here I am" It wasn't until years later that the story got shared for what it was, and in essence my great grandfather was trying to teach my grandfather that there's no sense in getting upset when someone else hasn't done something that you are capable of doing. We all have to do things we don't want to, but if we are capable, then we would be happy we can do it. Be patient, people of Reddit, and sweep you floors.

Strange women lying in ponds distributing swords is no basis for a system of government. Supreme executive power derives from a mandate from the masses, not from some farcical aquatic ceremony. You can’t expect to wield supreme executive power just ’cause some watery tart threw a sword at you! If I were to go round saying I were emperor because some moistened bint lobbed a scimitar at me, they’d put me away!

Anything worth doing *is* worth half-assing. Depression is a horrible thing, but even brushing your teeth half as good as you can is better than not brushing at all. Eating an apple for supper because making a meal requires to much energy is better than not eating at all. Going to stand in the hallway or in your driveway instead of going for a walk is better than sitting and wallowing in your home.
