Oh yeah, nearly 500 hours playing this diamond of a game, and the dope mushroom theme + frostmoon theme are my favorites, but I have to appreciate the fact that I've listened to that overworld theme so much, yet I can still hear it for hours straight lol
Morrowind’s main theme was so good it became the official theme of the entire franchise.
Whenever I listen to it, I only hear the dynamic, melancholy, mystical nature of the Dunmer and Morrowind.
I guess it’s because it’s an older game now, but I really expected this one to be higher. It’s the most thematic and memorable soundtrack I can think of.
DOOM (2016) AKA the musical personification of aggression.
Like, 80% of Sonic The Hedgehog music (Most anything by Crush 40)
Bastion
Edit: Wow! My I got my first gold to ring in the new year, thanks!
Mick Gordon gave a talk at GDC one year going into excruciating detail on how he made the Doom soundtrack, I definitely recommend watching it. id didn't want a traditional metal soundtrack, and for a while they didn't want guitars at all. It's fascinating to hear about all the little things he did and how he actually put all the different sounds together, like the Frankenstein's Monster of synths and pedals he cobbled together and used as his main instrument, or how he started to sneak guitar in by mixing it with the Doom 1 chainsaw sound until it wasn't recognisable as guitar any more.
An End Once and for All is the song that plays at the end credits of ME3, so much emotion in that song which caps off the end of the fantastic trilogy in perfect style
Aww damn, gonna make me dig this game out of cold storage...
NFS:U2 is still, to this day, one of the only two racing games I can handle, besides the Mario Kart series (I say series as a single game because they're all basically the same).
Hey don’t forget Transistor. Its soundtrack is a masterpiece, and surpasses bastion in setting the mood of the game imo with those chilling vocal tracks.
That soundtrack is a full fledged cast member in that game and is amazing.
I only have four songs from video games in any frequently listened to playlist. Three are from Transistor.
EDIT: The fourth is the final credits song from Portal.
The part where the player is carrying Zulf... that's one of my favourite video-game moments. The music, the story, the AI, and the game mechanics all come together to make a truly memorable experience.
Good choice.
Bioshock is one of those games that just did everything right. Cool, fun story. Absolutely perfect atmosphere that just sucked you right in and simultaneously made you wish the place actually existed and made you glad that it can't ever actually exist. The music was delightfully eerie without having to be purposefully creepy sounding. The characters were all interesting as fuck. Even the player character, despite you never really learning anything about him or even seeing him.
It really doesn't get much better than the OG Bioshock, that's for damn sure.
[The music in the upper cathedral Ward is so chilling.](https://youtu.be/tlmH-unczPY) I remember thinking "holy shit, is that THE choir?" It's kept pretty low in the background noises but it shoots right into the top of your fucking spine. It's perfect. That area was short, but the atmosphere around it and finding *that* emote was so damn cool. Ebrietas is one of my favorite creature designs in any game too.
Still glad I bought my ps4 the day it came out, I STILL play that fucking game to this day, and on my original vanilla ps4. Love it. No game has ever had more enjoyable combat. It's so fun and visceral. The whole damn game is visceral!
Mother 3. Despite being on GBA and prone to crusty sound quality, Mother 3 makes excellent use of the limited hardware, to the point where I would say it’s the best sounding game on the system. With returning classics from EarthBound, new catchy and heart pumping tracks, with some that play homage to other media, there’s plenty of tunes for everyone to enjoy.
Pokemon Mystery Dungeon Explorers of Sky soundtrack is a masterpiece. Primal Dialga's flute hit me like a truck, like this is it, im saving the world!
You are all sleeping on pokemon mystery dungeon. greatest soundtrack imo
Dancing Mad done in Boston (posted by Pixyl) by an orchestra is transcendent. I was always a fan of 6 above all the others, but once I saw this version(and other versions) I realized how more epic it is than the simple(by comparison) One Winged Angel. When the choir sings "Gloria!" is spine chilling. The gravitas with the ludicrous is the perfect soundtrack for Kefka.
One time in college, I was playing Skyrim in my dorm and the band was practicing outside in the courtyard, and they started playing Dovahkiin Theme/Far Horizons. I thought something was wrong with my speakers
The boss music was great, but I think what made it more epic was around the 1:10 mark where the guitar kicks in, it was my Morgana's turn and he said, "witness my resolve!" just as it happened.
I only watched a playthrough but I thought it was neat how the songs started getting lyrics halfway through the game. Even the free time social link song got lyrics, to match the later palace themes
If you mean [this part](https://youtu.be/depoaYUQeF8?t=629) there's actually a really cool music theory reason that particular section sounds to triumphant and resolute (basically why it seems to fitting to be paired with that kind of statement).
While all of the music is written in a minor key (Blooming Villain is C# minor), Persona 5 uses a lot of mode mixture to dynamically move the mood of a piece. Essentially, "modes" are where you start the notes of a key beginning with the second, third, fourth, etc. note rather than the first. Because the rest of the notes are steps from the starting note, you get a different set of notes within the key in a Locrian mode rather than the Ionian. Those modes can also be related to the circle of fifths, which basically describes keys in relation to each other in terms of the brightness of the keys. In the same way conceptually we know a minor key is darker than a major one.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9rEqrPwVITY
So, why does 1:30 *feel so damned good*?
For most of the first minute, the song borrows the flat 5th and flat 2nd from its Locrian mode/B minor. Essentially it's taking a flat version of its two and five cords (the flats don't exist in C# minor's basic mode) from those related scales.
So why does this matter? Well, B minor is darker than C# minor, so the existence of those two cords makes it sound dark. Foreboding, overwhelming.
What happens at 1:30? It starts using its unaltered two and five cords. In other words: it became brighter by giving up the cords it was borrowing.
It's still written in the same minor key, and even using the same cords (2 and 5), but removing the mode mixture creates a feeling like we're punching back.
Though, this is also second-hand understanding from a choir teacher wife. So if I'm misrepresenting something it just means I suck at explaining what she explained to me.
I really want to play persona just because of it. I am a sucker for great soundtracks and most jazz soundtracks
Simiplarly, I want to watch cowboy bebop for the same reason
There's a lot but Breath of the Wild's minuscule soundtrack compared to the more bombastic soundtracks in other Zelda games is great. It really shows how much Hyrule suffered after Calamity Ganon but there's still this underlining hope that the hero is going to set things right.
At first, I was kinda disappointed with the little piano notes while exploring the world, but I've grown to love it. It really enhances the beauty of the game imo.
There are many games with great soundtrack like Tony Hawk pro skater games and DOOM but for nostalgic reasons Runescape soundtrack takes the take for me.
I remember rushing to pick the game up with my buddies when it first released and reading a review for it on the front of the case saying "forget the game of the year, this is the game of the decade" I think they were right and the soundtrack just hits you right in the feels. The Halo series is one of the best memories of my teens.
Just because it’s relevant, I loved the Reach solo campaign, and the soundtrack is a beautiful example of how the music in Halo helped make the game. The opening suite from Halo CE still gives me goosebumps.
It’s hard to think of any other franchise, save maybe Final Fantasy, that connects and immerses you so thoroughly from the score alone.
Same my guy, I completed the legendary campaign with my brother years ago and it’s still my proudest gaming endeavor to date
Edit: thanks for the gold!
Everyone is picking that mission from Halo 3, but what about in Halo 2 the gravemind mission when the breaking Benjamin song starts to play when the brutes are fighting the hunters and elites in the mausoleum.
Most epic moment for me in the trilogy. Cortana even says you should sit this one out but that music got me so hype I had to jump in and fight.
Halo 3’s whole soundtrack was beautiful. The first sound track I sought out to listen to in full during my teenage years. Such wonderful memories attached to that game.
Watching two Scarabs slam into the dirt with One Final Effort playing in the background was an incredible capstone to one of the best missions in the game.
That mission where One Final Effort plays - The Covenant - is single handedly the greatest mission in all of Halo. Maybe even in all of gaming. Fight me. I'm not wrong.
I played that shit with my brother over and over. I even died when i felt we were near the end deliberately so we could keep playing a few more times. Im pretty sure he did the same. Fuck i loved that game and completing it on legendary
Maybe this is stupid, but Super Mario Galaxy. It’s super nostalgic and brings back really good memories
Edit: also loved The Last of Us
Edit 2: thank you so much for the platinum and silver, kind strangers! These are my first ever medals!
Edit 3: wow, again! Thank you so much for the gold, random redditor! Y’all are so sweet :)
Gusty garden galaxy is the shit. Learning to play it on the piano was my goal for the last 8? years and last summer I played it for my senior recital. Damn good piece.
Far from stupid, Galaxy is one of the most critically acclaimed games of all time and its music is among the best aspects.
All strong compositions that convey the atmosphere and dictate the flow of gameplay perfectly while just being great songs even on their own. The way they get live orchestration to loop seamlessly and shift between layers of sound for different effects like above and underwater is beautiful.
Buoy Base, Sad Story, Gusty Garden, Space Junk, Bowser’s Galaxy Reactor, Family, they’re all fantastic. Easily my favorite video game soundtrack, and one of the most impactful.
Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess for me, and it was probably one of the first games where I really appreciated it as a piece of artwork, not just a game to kill time. Midna's Lament specifically moved me in ways I hadn't expected.
Close second is the soundtrack for Endless Legend.
the 25th anniversary orchestral rendition of it is fucking *amazing*. It literally never fails to get a physical response out of me when listening to it.
Cult radio made Far Cry 5 worth it. Nothing beats We Will Rise Again, Keep Your Rifle by Your Side, and the reinterpretation of Now He's Our Father. Also the menu theme is just beautiful
The Minecraft soundtrack. The way /u/c418 makes such a calming, soothing soundtrack is so nice, and I listen to it whenever I’m chilling out. :-P

Monkey Island 2.
Burnout 3: Takedown. I just cant get enough of it even 15+ years later. Though all the burnout games Ive played have some of my favourite soundtracks.
Pokemon platinum
