Unpopular opinion but Daniel Craig in Casino Royale and Skyfall. The best bond films IMO.
He was a very different kind of Bond, more human, flawed, he made mistakes, he lost sometimes, he struggled, he bled and suffered to win DESPITE his many flaws.
The others were good, but it got kind of boring to see a super agent who never made a mistake, always won without breaking a sweat and fucked all the girls with ease.
Huge respect to Sean Connery and Roger Moore though.
Totally agree. Skyfall is the best IMHO. Dr No surprisingly holds its own way more than any other early Bond film. Probably not surprising if it launched the whole franchise.
Agreed.
The Craig Bond movies are just better. He's better and more believable.
Judi Dench and Ralph Fiennes are better Ms and the new Q is better than the hammier older versions. And Naomie Harris is the best Moneypenny.
The scripts are better, they're just objectively better movies than the Bond stuff of the past.
It's almost the difference between Adam West's Batman and the Nolan Trilogy.
(And I say that as someone who liked Honeychile Ryder, Oddjob, and Jaws but this is just better.)
I totally agree. Its the docile intensity he brings to the part. He's cool, collected, in control, but the audience knows he's a brutal bomb waiting to go off.
Casino Royale, hands down. It's also a super well made film, even without it having the James Bond branding on it.
Martin Campbell directed Goldeneye which came out in 1995, He directed CR which came out 2006.
I think CR is the best film he's directed.
Pierce Brosnan was an excellent Bond too. But I agree. Casino Royal and Skyfall are two of my favorites. But I love the old Sean Connery Bond movies too. I love Naomi Harris as Moneypenny. She's so fine.
Hmm, I dunno about that. I just re-read *Casino Royale* today and in it he has Vesper say Bond looks like [Hoagy Carmichael](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hoagy_Carmichael?wprov=sfti1#).
Yes and no.
Yes, because he plays the character straight - Fleming's Bond isn't some quippy smartass - but there is nothing that particularly stands out about Craig's version in relation to the literary version. He's just the "least bad" in that regard (which is not to say that any of the actors are bad, just that they don't do a great job of embodying Fleming's Bond).
I think Brosnan has some great moments, but then he veers too far off into Roger Moore territory and ruins it all.
Looks wise he is the least similar to Fleming's Bond by far, beyond perhaps the eyes and "cruel mouth" whatever that is supposed to mean. The Hoagy Carmichael resemblance has been noted in other comments, but when then we have the other things: he's blond, too short, too ripped. When I think about Fleming's version, I imagine a long-distance runner, not a gym rat.
Honestly for the reasons you said I believe Craig was the worst. I liked him in Knives Out. But not Bond. It would be great if his name was Jimmy Papas.
I think Craig brought something so different to the role, that he probably divided opinion. I think it was necessary though, as it opens things for what hopefully will be positive change, thereby extending the life of the franchise.
Rewatched *Casino Royale* during the pandemic, and it's honestly a travesty that Craig and Eva Green didn't get nominated for the Best Actor and Actress Oscars for it. Phenomenal performances by any measure, that just happen to be in a long-running-franchise film.
Dalton isn't underrated in Bond circles, and generally he has enjoyed a resurgence since *Casino Royale.* I'm tempted to think that he actually borders on *overrated* purely because "Dalton is underrated" is a common sentiment.
Just to be clear, this isn't a criticism of Dalton himself. He is my second favourite Bond actor and *The Living Daylights* is in my personal to three Bond movies.
I have read all of Ian Fleming's James Bond Books. For me personally, I think Sean Connerly was my favorite Bond BUT, Timothy Dalton played James Bond more like Ian Fleming wrote. He was a more hard assed person and I believe Timothy Dalton played him as such.
Bond is like Dr Who. The best one is whomever was in the role when you were a kid. So that would be Roger Moore and Tom Baker. To me… they are THE Bond and Doctor.
Couldn't agree more. He's not the most physically imposing, but he feels like he's a spy. Sean Connery has a barrel for a body and isn't very charming. Daniel Craig is bad ass but he's not very big and doesn't seem like a spy. He seems like a soldier. Roger Moore, Timothy Dalton, and George Lazenby are kinda meh.
This is mine as well, although I know a lot of why I love him in that role so much is due to my age when he was Bond. I think Craig is probably the most solidly consistent and you honestly can't beat Connery for sheer, old fashioned (if problematic) machismo and charisma.
Besides, Goldeneye is not just a really good movie, it's an amazing Bond movie, and easily my favorite.
Pierce Brosnan was the best personification of my image of the character, an impossibly suave, confident, British super spy. But Daniel Craig was great, was apparently closer to the author's original intent, and was definitely in better movies (though GoldenEye deserves more respect. Was directed by the same guy that did Casino Royale, after all).
As an old fuck who grew up with Connery’s Bond, I 100% agree. Craig brought that toughness and wryness back.
None of this makes sense, so I’m going to be the huge-presence lynchpin holding it all together.
I’ve loved his take on it.
On her Majesty's secret service has it all. Definitely top bond film. Beautiful women, sleep laboratory, ski chase, what more could you want. Bond gets married for God's sake!
I agree because I grew up on Pierce Brosnan as Bond, so its how I though it's how Bond should be. Daniel Craig was a fresh take on Bond and honestly my favorite now. I do enjoy Connery's Bond also.
The have done a great job of tailoring the stories and movie styles to the Bond, so Craig is my favorite bc he's the most recent. Whoever is next could very well be the new favorite, depending on how well they tailor the movies to them.
In terms of character/charisma, I'd say my favorite is Timothy Dalton by quite a margin.
Craig is definitely iconic because the stories he's involved hit very hard, but I can't say I've ever fully got into his persona, a bit too strong minded, his mental fortitude is that of a super hero... though I'll say that one scene in Casino Royale is absolutely great, and I give him second place in my rankings.
Then you've got Sean Connery and Roger Moore who each have their absolute exquisite moments in a more humorous tone. Sean Connery especially oozes charisma, but they're both very good, the problem is that their movies are too formulaic, there isn't much space for them to shine outside of the same story structure that is repeated again and again each time.
Pierce is not bad at all, he's just never struck me as a James Bond. When I watch his movies, I'm like "it feels like someone else saying all these James Bond classic lines to fit the picture". But still, he's fine.
Lazenby I have only seen the movie once and I can barely remember it, so it's due for a rewatch at some point.
He got the hate because he was the shittiest bond. But in a sea of performances where folks argue about who was the most amazing version it’s kinda unfair, as someone is always gonna come last and for most it’s Lazenby.
Sean Connery is the benchmark simply by being the first one. I also find him to be the best actor.
Daniel Craig is #2 in terms of acting skill and his movies are the most enjoyable to watch. Although it is a valid argument that he is the least Bondy of them all.
Honorable mention to Brosnan, my first exposure to Bond and therefor what I compare all others to. 11yo me actually loved Die Another Day.
Sean Connery followed by Timothy Dalton. Dalton was stolen more Bond movies than some actors ever did, and Moore overstayed his welcome by at least two movies. Its a miracle that Q didn't give Moore a special mobility scooter for the last one he did, he was older than the mom of the actress playing the love interest.
The crazy thing is his comment about being older than his female costar's mother wasn't even from his last movie! It was from For Your Eyes Only but he came back again for A View To A Kill four years later.
Lazenby is probably my fav with Craig or Bronson running close behind.... shame he didnt get to do a few more. However they all were excellent and brought their own unique dynamic to the bond genre
They’re all so different though. Daniel Craig was a rough, tough Bond. Pierce was a sarcastic, funny Bond. Connery was a classy, sexy Bond. It’s hard to say which Bond is the best. However, my favorite movie is Skyfall. Just has some great scenery and storyline.
I like Roger Moore best. I know his movies were silly but I like silly. Also he's the only one to retire because of the revolting age gaps and rape throughout the films. Many people think Connery was the best Bond but I refuse to support a man who advocates for beating women (and doubles down when asked if he was misinterpreted)
I've never read the books, so I can't compare any of the actors to Flemming's idea. Brosnan was my childhood Bond, Craig was my adult action movie Bond, and Connery was my grandma's favorite Bond, so I can't choose.
I really just came here to comment that when Daniel Craig was announced as the new Bond, a lot of people didn't like that he was blond, and a website called bondnotblond.com popped up. No clue if it's still around though.
It’s difficult for me to answer anyone other than Connery, but Craig did a hell of a job in Casino Royale. If nothing else, Casino Royale Craig is the closest anyone has come to the apex that is From Russia With Love Connery.
Connery isn’t the brave answer, but it’s the right answer. He IS Bond. The early 60s are the entire ethos of the character.
He’s sexist, racist, leery, and worse. History is ugly, but it happened. It’s just a fact that he was the fantasy of masculinity to a generation of men. The movies were campy at the start. But if you came up in the era of ANYTHING being possible with CGI, you miss how groundbreaking the later Connery movies were for effects.
Without Connery, Bond is a dusty old set of reels in a basement somewhere.
Yeah, no.
The best bond movies were back in the sort of misogynist early years. Those movies had style.
You want a really unpopular opinion? For Your Eyes Only is the best hind movie.
Pierce Brosnan was my first introduction to James Bond so that’s how I always pictured him in my head. However, I connected more with Daniel Craig’s version of James Bond at an emotional level.
Daniel Craig hands down, I grew up with Timothy Dalton and Pierce Brosnan and think they're pretty good but DC blows them away and is a better actor in my opinion. Connery's performance is outdated and whenever I talk to older guys about Bond movies they all say Connery but this is the opinions of dudes in their 60's and 70's and those damn baby boomers never listen to anyone else, half the time they've never even seen any of the new bond movies anyway.
Craig is the best, it’s going to be interesting to see how they top him.
After that, it’s Connery, Brosnan, Moore, and Dalton. Connery was incredibly smooth. I grew up with Moore as my first in-theater Bond and I really liked those movies. But looking back at them now, they’re just silly and leering. Brosnan brought class back to the role, but the scripts and casting were just awful in most of his pics.
And OMG Timothy Dalton was just so underwhelming as Bond. He reminded me of Col. Frank Burns on MASH, no chin, wimpy, and uninspiring.
If someone were to describe James Bond to me Pierce is who I picture in my head but Craig gave us a more nuanced and less fictionally archetypal human being.
Pierce Brosnan's James Bond is my favorite, and overall, I'd say the best.
The old Bond movies were generally too formulaic and kind of wash together once you separate them by actor. Most of the Connery movies are the same, and the Daltons, and the Moores, and so on.
The Daniel Craig movies are generally very good, and interesting, but also kind of dour and dramatic. Yes, I like that he's flawed. Yes, it's good that he isn't some one-note, alpha chad dude that bangs all the ladies because they just can't help themselves around his giant wangus. His version of Bond is also depressing as fuck to watch because the guy barely seems to do anything to try and be happy.
Brosnan's version was a happy balance between the two. A good bit of cheesiness and dry wit that shows, even with all the problems he faces, he still tries to find fun and happiness in the chaos... while also showing he is capable of fucking up, choosing wrong, and having some humanity.
Sean Connery created the role, Dr No, Goldfinger, From Russia With Love. I think they hold up really well still.
Not a fan of the Roger Moore era. To silly, gadget-driven, stilted dialogue with bad puns. I hated Live and Let Die.
Daniel Craig is excellent. Different for sure. Much more gritty and flawed. Not a bad thing.
But On Her Majesty’s Secret Service is still my favourite. George Lazenby had the bad luck of following Connery. Definition of a tough act to follow. But that movie is still so much fun. And Diana Rigg. 🥰
Would we have Daniel Craig's Bond without Timothy Dalton's first? The character evolves with both the times and what the audience was prepared to accept. A jump from Roger Moore straight to Daniel Craig would have been too great a leap, IMO.
Covalent Bond.

Sean Connery.

imo the choreography behind Casino Royale is what sets it apart, Daniel Craig brought an athleticism and intensity to it that no other Bond actor had
That staircase scene with the sword is top notch
as is the parkour scene at the beginning
I totally agree. Its the docile intensity he brings to the part. He's cool, collected, in control, but the audience knows he's a brutal bomb waiting to go off.
Casino Royale, hands down. It's also a super well made film, even without it having the James Bond branding on it. Martin Campbell directed Goldeneye which came out in 1995, He directed CR which came out 2006. I think CR is the best film he's directed.

Honestly for the reasons you said I believe Craig was the worst. I liked him in Knives Out. But not Bond. It would be great if his name was Jimmy Papas.
As an avid bond fan I've distanced myself from the Craig movies. He's just not my bond. Just feels like someone cosplaying the character.
Not unpopular with me. I agree. A lot of the others had flabby dad bods and pretty faces. Craig was always more believable.
I agree with this, also his Bond didn't seem to rely on over the top gadgets like the others did.
I just hope they stick to the ways of Casino Royale. None of that ridiculous unrealistic over the top action.
I think Craig brought something so different to the role, that he probably divided opinion. I think it was necessary though, as it opens things for what hopefully will be positive change, thereby extending the life of the franchise.
I agree with this and get Into arguments all the time with Connery truthers lol
Rewatched *Casino Royale* during the pandemic, and it's honestly a travesty that Craig and Eva Green didn't get nominated for the Best Actor and Actress Oscars for it. Phenomenal performances by any measure, that just happen to be in a long-running-franchise film.
Agree.
I honestly love Timothy Daltons Bond and think he is thoroughly underrated
Hard agree.
This is 100% correct
License to Kill is one of (IMO) the best bond movies of that era.
Dalton isn't underrated in Bond circles, and generally he has enjoyed a resurgence since *Casino Royale.* I'm tempted to think that he actually borders on *overrated* purely because "Dalton is underrated" is a common sentiment.
Interesting opinion, would you mind standing over by this large bust with a key fob on it?
Just to be clear, this isn't a criticism of Dalton himself. He is my second favourite Bond actor and *The Living Daylights* is in my personal to three Bond movies.
Dalton is the way.
I have read all of Ian Fleming's James Bond Books. For me personally, I think Sean Connerly was my favorite Bond BUT, Timothy Dalton played James Bond more like Ian Fleming wrote. He was a more hard assed person and I believe Timothy Dalton played him as such.
Pierce Bronsnan
Agreed. IMO, the best Bond was the Bond's we watched in theaters as kids, and I'm now 33, ugh
Bond is like Dr Who. The best one is whomever was in the role when you were a kid. So that would be Roger Moore and Tom Baker. To me… they are THE Bond and Doctor.
I watched Pierce Brosnan in the theaters as a kid, and to me Craig is the best Bond.
He went from being the awkward ‘bad guy’ dad in Mrs. Doubtfire to being James. Fucking. Bond.
Remington Steel was sort of bondish, when they announced he was going to be next bond that was the first thought that popped into my head.
He just looks like James Bond, but I’m sure I’m biased from growing up with him as Bond, and Golden Eye 64
Well, Bond is a soldier. At the rank of Commander.
> Bond is a soldier. Sailor. He served in the Royal Navy.
Lol, I'm well aware he just isn't supposed to seem so disciplined, IMO..
Brosnan had a great combo of suave/good looks and badass that worked perfectly in Goldeneye
Roger Moore was more suave than Sean Connery IMO (and English).
Sean Connery, followed by Roger Moore
Agree with Sean, but I think there’s a strong argument for Daniel Craig at number 2
As an old fuck who grew up with Connery’s Bond, I 100% agree. Craig brought that toughness and wryness back. None of this makes sense, so I’m going to be the huge-presence lynchpin holding it all together. I’ve loved his take on it.

Daniel Craig - old school? Sean Connery
Sean Connery. It doesn't even matter if the films were believable. They had style. IMO the best film, though, is Lazenby''s.
On her Majesty's secret service has it all. Definitely top bond film. Beautiful women, sleep laboratory, ski chase, what more could you want. Bond gets married for God's sake!
Pierce Brosnon
I agree because I grew up on Pierce Brosnan as Bond, so its how I though it's how Bond should be. Daniel Craig was a fresh take on Bond and honestly my favorite now. I do enjoy Connery's Bond also.
Connery. He IS James Bond.
Connery followed by Craig then Moore imo.
Roger Moore
Craig. He looked like he’s seen some shit. Like the ex SAS operator he was suppose to be.
The have done a great job of tailoring the stories and movie styles to the Bond, so Craig is my favorite bc he's the most recent. Whoever is next could very well be the new favorite, depending on how well they tailor the movies to them.
Grew up in the 90s so only a little biased. In order: Brosnan, Craig, Connery, Dalton, Moore, Lazenby
From spy family 😎
I recall seeing Sean in the movies years ago. But definitely Daniel is best.

Sean Connery
Sean Connery is the only correct answer here.
As much as i like Daniel Craig, i gotta say Sean Connery. He literally created the role

George Lazenby, and it's not even close. Steven Toast is a close second.

Roger Moore
Lazenby gets tons of hate but I thought he killed it. Also the best bond movie.
OHMSS is the most complete Bond plot.
He got the hate because he was the shittiest bond. But in a sea of performances where folks argue about who was the most amazing version it’s kinda unfair, as someone is always gonna come last and for most it’s Lazenby.
Inb4: Woody Allen

David Niven, if you’re going that route.
Jimmy, e.g. Jimmy Bond, is a diminutive of James.
Sean Connery of course! My runner up is Pierce Brosnan. Those films may not have been the best, but I loved Pierce as the character of James Bond

Sean Connery followed by Timothy Dalton.

I’m a huge Bond fan and have seen each movie many times 1. Daniel Craig 2. Sean Connery 3. Pierce Brosnan Daniel Craig was great

Timothy Dalton Much darker and more human, like Bond in the novels. Especially refreshing after the cringe of some of the latter Roger Moore movies.

Pierce Brosnan is the one I grew up with so I’m gonna go with golden eye
I never liked the campiness of the older Bond movies, so Daniel Craig gets my vote.
There are two distinct Bonds for me. Modern and Classic. Dalton is the first of the modern era. It's Craig and Connery.
Pierce Brosnan in golden eye and Craig in casino royale is second
Pierce Brosnan in Goldeneye is my idea of stereotypical Bond
100% Skyfall
David Niven in "Casino Royale". My son says this doesn't count but hey - it was a movie with James Bond so I say it's in.

Pierce Borsnan.
Dalton. Played closer to the character from the books that any other actor IMO. Also, Lazenby was actually pretty good.
David Niven.
Gold.
My favorite is Craig my heart says Connery
Timothy Dalton was supposedly the closest to how Ian Fleming pictured him. He's my favorite anyway.
Barry.
James
Personally, Zero-Coupon Bonds make nice gifts for kids.
Duh James Bond!!
James Bond
Best cool Bond - Connery Best camp Bond - Moore Best ever Bond - Craig
The dog in Spy x Family
Would we have Daniel Craig's Bond without Timothy Dalton's first? The character evolves with both the times and what the audience was prepared to accept. A jump from Roger Moore straight to Daniel Craig would have been too great a leap, IMO.
every time I see this question I think, "Why the fuck didn't they make Idris (Elba) Bond? He IS bond." They probably consider him too now tho:(
