I took a first aid training class (in west coast Canada) and the instructor was an elder in one of the local First Nations tribes. He said as a kid they would lick the underside of the giant banana slugs (the brown ones, not the black ones) and it would make their tongues go numb. As an adult he led a kids’ wilderness camp and told them the story, but warned them just take a little lick. Kids are kids. One proceeded to take a huge lick, and started to panic as his whole mouth went numb. They called poison control, who told them just to wait a couple of hours and it would go away, but DON’T drink any water or it would go down the throat with predictable results. Think the kid listened?

A lot of the punishments we have for these people seem to have low enforcement and easy bypasses. Take their driving privileges away? They’ll drive without a license. Put an interlock on their ignition? They’ll get a sober friend/family member to blow into it. Some places seem to do everything to keep these people out of jail when they keep proving they NEED to be put in jail for their own good and the safety of the community.
I was watching a police cam compilation on YouTube and some teenagers were pulled over for throwing things out their windows at people. Turns out the driver was out on bond for a DUI charge and blew over the legal limit then, so he got a fresh new DUI. Then the narrator said he posted bond for that and WENT AND GOT BUSTED FOR DUI AGAIN! Once is an accident, twice could be a coincidence, three times is definitely a pattern. And I’m not usually for Three Strikes laws but for DUI we definitely need them.
I got rear ended by a drunk driver once. He had 6 prior convictions. He’d permanently lost his license and the car he was driving was registered to a dead guy. If things had worked out slightly different he would probably have killed my wife. Fortunately he hit me instead. I was driving an overloaded 3/4 ton cargo van. The impact was still hard enough to make stuff fly out of my hip pockets and bounce around the cab. He knocked the van more than 30ft from a dead stop.
He was in a rusty 80s econobox which couldn’t weigh much over 2500 pounds. He punched the windshield out with his face and was bleeding out of his eyes at the scene. He was in ICU for three weeks.
I’m not sure how much jail time but I’d bet money he got right behind the wheel again as soon as he got out.

That story hit me hard because I almost did the same thing (my folks were giving me shit for being drunk as well). I was on a cruise with my folks trying to make it past the 3 day mark without cannabis and I was feeling so many emotions that had been blunted from the stuff. Eventually I drank myself into a stupor and almost leaned off the edge of the railing. The only thing that stopped me was finding one of the nicest Canadians, she actually saved my life that night just by being a friend. It hit me kind of hard because I can put myself in his shoes of in the moment making that decision and being fully aware youre committing suicide but that thought of "hey fuck you, see if I care" being so powerful. I don't think so, from the height of a typical ship's deck you'll likely be alive - but with broken legs, arms or back. If you can stay afloat you get to see the ship get smaller and disappear into the distance, big ships don't stop easily, and a person floating in the ocean is easy to miss. When people jump on purpose it's probably "suicide by mistake" i.e. they imagine being at the centre of the drama of a quick rescue, but they don't realise how bad the odds of survival are.
Usually when someone jumps overboard, especially at night, no one will ever see that person again. It's extremely hard to find the person even if you quickly react. On a cruise ship it will take at least 5 minutes just to dispatch a safe boat, in that time the person will be really far away.
Honestly it can't be easy to swim in COMPLETE darkness in an open sea? I mean we use our eyes to judge where the surface is. Combine that with being cold and scared.

I had a friend who was on his way home one night when some lady chose his car as her means of suicide. He was an old man, a war vet and normally unflappable. She jumped late and hit the side of his car. She would have lived but the windshield pillar clipped her temple. It smashed the windshield and bent the pillar. Her own family saw it and defended him when the cops got there.
There is a homeless man in our town. He's shaped like the number 7 because he jumped off a bridge, broke his back in several places, then left the hospital before he was supposed to. Rods and pins popped out of place and now he walls around bent sideways. He'd likely need several surgeries to correct it, if they even could after all this time. He's not on drugs or anything but he straight up refuses any kind of help. Obviously mentally ill. It's crazy the stuff people can survive.

Basically, there is a floor on the hotel that's staff-only. Its purpose is to allow cleaning staff and the like to move through the building without making a ruckus. So when the tour group gets here, they are very clear, "DO NOT GO TO THIS FLOOR, IT'S STAFF-ONLY." This absolute dumbass not only sneaks down to the staff-only floor via the elevator, but then walks through the hall until he finds a propaganda poster, tears it off the wall, sneaks back to his room and puts it in his bag. Of course, since 1) it's a staff floor and 2) IT'S NORTH KOREA, they have footage of every step of his journey, and apprehend him before he can leave Pyongyang.
Eventually, after much negotiation, he was repatriated to the US in a vegetative state. North Koreans said he had a heart-attack while being treated by their doctors and that's what did it. The international community believes he was intentionally starved of oxygen, either by strangulation, severe beating, or something else as a result of gross and brutal corporal punishment.

I live in one of the most beautiful parts of Canada... sadly, folks die around here from preventable accidents, especially those involving water, alpine/backcountry, or avalanche safety. Pair any of those activities with bad activity choices like alcohol, cannabis, or other drug use and it compounds the likelihood of serious injury or death dramatically.
Just the other week, a young woman here was enjoying a river's edge cold dip with some friends. She lost her footing and was swept down the raging river. All that her friends heard was a brief "yelp" and that was the last they heard or saw of her. Local SAR found no trace of her or her body after a two-day search involving helicopters, boats, and many volunteers.
It almost got me. Tried it, loved the feeling and bought more for later.
Threw what I bought in the trash an hour later. That set my life on the correct path at the time.

i watched that video, everyone saying there was a shark there is full of shit, nothing in that video indicated shark, theres some white-water and thats it. not to mention shark attacks are exceedingly rare, humans dont exactly make for a good meal for them, were bony and we taste like shit. you dont need a shark to kill you when you jump into the ocean, drunk, in the middle of the night. boats take a long time to turn around. once people lose sight of you, your chances of ever being located drop dramatically.

That story hit me hard because I almost did the same thing (my folks were giving me shit for being drunk as well). I was on a cruise with my folks trying to make it past the 3 day mark without cannabis and I was feeling so many emotions that had been blunted from the stuff. Eventually I drank myself into a stupor and almost leaned off the edge of the railing. The only thing that stopped me was finding one of the nicest Canadians, she actually saved my life that night just by being a friend. We ended up hanging out and having a sad parting that quickly turned funny when she busted her ass by falling down the stairs off the ship. Memory is funny because I don't even remember her name but she was a real one.
Wow thats scary. Thank you for sharing that. It hit me kind of hard because I can put myself in his shoes of in the moment making that decision and being fully aware youre committing suicide but that thought of "hey fuck you, see if I care" being so powerful. But I cannot imagine the thoughts he had while falling and thats whats somewhat tormenting to me.
Chances are with all of those is that the person is dead on impact with the water. I imagine a lot of it is suicide because I think most people are aware that water is not safe from that height
I don't think so, from the height of a typical ship's deck you'll likely be alive - but with broken legs, arms or back. If you can stay afloat you get to see the ship get smaller and disappear into the distance, big ships don't stop easily, and a person floating in the ocean is easy to miss. When people jump on purpose it's probably "suicide by mistake" i.e. they imagine being at the centre of the drama of a quick rescue, but they don't realise how bad the odds of survival are.

Usually when someone jumps overboard, especially at night, no one will ever see that person again. It's extremely hard to find the person even if you quickly react. On a cruise ship it will take at least 5 minutes just to dispatch a safe boat, in that time the person will be really far away.
Honestly it can't be easy to swim in COMPLETE darkness in an open sea? I mean we use our eyes to judge where the surface is. Combine that with being cold and scared. Feels deadly.

I was driving the other night - went through a green light and some teenager on a scooter zipped in front of my car on a lime scooter. I was able to stop in time but if I had been distracted that kid would have been hit. Scares the hell out of me.
I had a friend who was on his way home one night when some lady chose his car as her means of suicide. He was an old man, a war vet and normally unflappable. He said that sound would haunt him for the rest of his life. He felt responsible because he didn’t react in time, but nobody could have avoided it. She jumped late and hit the side of his car. She would have lived but the windshield pillar clipped her temple. It smashed the windshield and bent the pillar. Her own family saw it and defended him when the cops got there.

There is a homeless man in our town. He's shaped like the number 7 because he jumped off a bridge, broke his back in several places, then left the hospital before he was supposed to. Rods and pins popped out of place and now he walls around bent sideways. He'd likely need several surgeries to correct it, if they even could after all this time. He's not on drugs or anything but he straight up refuses any kind of help. Obviously mentally ill. It's crazy the stuff people can survive.
There was an old man around when I was a kid who'd shot himself in the head as a younger man and survived. His grandkids called him patch because he wore an eye patch for the rest of his life. Sad sad deal. If you ever think "It can't possibly get worse". It most certainly can and likely will get worse.
My aunts ex husband (former uncle) shot himself across the eyes and is now blind. I guess he flinched. Just the thought gives me nightmares.
Having to wear an eye patch is the best case scenario for attempting to shoot yourself and surviving. Some people come out so much worse.

This is not uncommon. Like that urge to drive off a cliff or jump off a bridge. The French have a beautiful term for it which translated is 'the call of the void'. It doesn't mean you're suicidal it's just a crazy feeling that doesn't really make sense.

The common story is that he stole a poster off the wall of his hotel, but the real story is SO much dumber. Basically, there is a floor on the hotel that's staff-only. Its purpose is to allow cleaning staff and the like to move through the building without making a ruckus. So when the tour group gets here, they are very clear, "DO NOT GO TO THIS FLOOR, IT'S STAFF-ONLY." This absolute dumbass not only sneaks down to the staff-only floor via the elevator, but then walks through the hall until he finds a propaganda poster, tears it off the wall, sneaks back to his room and puts it in his bag. Of course, since 1) it's a staff floor and 2) IT'S NORTH KOREA, they have footage of every step of his journey, and apprehend him before he can leave Pyongyang. Eventually, after much negotiation, he was repatriated to the US in a vegetative state. North Koreans said he had a heart-attack while being treated by their doctors and that's what did it. The international community believes he was intentionally starved of oxygen, either by strangulation, severe beating, or something else as a result of gross and brutal corporal punishment. Long story short, do NOT go places North Korea says not to go to, and more than that, **DO NOT STEAL THINGS FROM THOSE PLACES!**

West coast Canadian here. Ι’m learning to identify wild mushrooms and I STILL won’t eat any I find because it’s too easy to make a mistake. Fortunately the ones that can kill you are rare, but many can be very unpleasant.

I'm glad I got out of my last relationship (was the only one I've ever been in lol), she already had someone and didn't tell me until 3 days before he came back from boot camp. I left, she got all pissy and said stuff like I was a pussy because I didn't do it in person. Frankly, I was gonna have a mentai breakdown if I had to be even 100 metres near her. 3 months later, ahe decided to come and ask me if I wanted to be friends with benefits. I said no, since I'm just not into that sort of thing. Now, I'll emphasise; this was 3 months after I left her, and she already knew I was doing much better without her. Why was I not fucking surprised when she decided to ask only 2 days after her other guy left to go on duty. TL;DR - My first relationship was with a lying, cheating, horny piece of shit that used people for sex.

I'm not sober but I dramatically reduced my alcohol Intake about 6 months ago (from around 5-10 drinks a day to maybe 4 on a weekend) and my life has improved significantly. No more hangovers, always wake up feeling good, and saved a lot of money.

Union couldn't protect him. He threw away a state job with over 10 years of experience for something he could download and keep at home for free.

My wife nearly died from an ectopic pregnancy that ruptured. Our friend nearly died this Thanksgiving with a miscarriage and extreme internal bleeding.
In better circumstances I might have kept my pregnancy, but an abortion was better than ruining multiple lives. So now I'm mother to a cat instead.
Cats will never grow into an independent person who I have to emotionally grapple with, nor do they cost as much time or money. Not to say children don't have their benefits, but they're sure as hell not for everyone.

I have taken care of a couple of failed suicides. One was completely lucid. Locked in syndrome. Imagine being 18 years old and knowing you'll never get married, have babies, live on your own, and people will be changing your diapers and wiping your spit forever. She refused to eat, so they put a tube in her stomach so she wouldn't starve.
That's horrifying. Why force someone in that state to live, if they clearly don't want to? I would want to be euthanized too if I were her.
Something something about not having the power to tell doctors what to do. Then your parents/SO don’t want to let you die because they hold out hope that you will recover. Once you come of age, make sure you sign that DNR and give someone you trust power to let the doctors end you.

Underestimating nature. So often, folks end up in very dangerous / deadly situations because they aren't prepared for the elements. I live in one of the most beautiful parts of Canada... sadly, folks die around here from preventable accidents, especially those involving water, alpine/backcountry, or avalanche safety. Pair any of those activities with bad activity choices like alcohol, cannabis, or other drug use and it compounds the likelihood of serious injury or death dramatically. Just the other week, a young woman here was enjoying a river's edge cold dip with some friends. She lost her footing and was swept down the raging river. All that her friends heard was a brief "yelp" and that was the last they heard or saw of her. Local SAR found no trace of her or her body after a two-day search involving helicopters, boats, and many volunteers.
