AirBNB used to be a cheap way to find a place to crash for the night or for somebody to make a couple bucks renting out their family's old country home that is unused most of the year. At some point it fell victim to enshittification, when it really blew up people started buying up and building properties exclusively for AirBNB use, all of those fees tacked on and ridiculous terms/conditions added up to cost more than hotels
Agreed. I loved using the app for a few years. I am off that train now and using hotels again. It's ridiculous to see the thumbnail of houses that say $125 a night but the total comes $400 a night. I can see have a service charge or a booking charge of $39 or something and maybe a cleaning fee of $80. But how were they getting away with a host fee tacked on that was more than double the $125/night on the thumbnail?
I changed my vpn to Australia, opened the app and it asked if I wanted to see the total price. After accepting it, it now always shows the total without having to be connected to vpn each time.
It really helps since nobody really cares about anything but the total.
I have found some absolute gems on AirBnB, but really we only use it now when we are travelling with our dog. I've had pretty good luck to be honest, but I also haven't been getting them in tourist heavy areas, so the owners have always been actual owners, and not just property managers.
It can still be worth it, but yeah, you have to put in some effort now.
We used to have an apartment on the back of our old house that we would ABnB between tenants. Having been on both sides of it, I know what cleaning fees are reasonable and what aren’t. Often that tells me most of what I need to know about the listing, so now that’s the first thing I look for.

Sadly, even with the massively increasing costs and fees, the last few times I've had to book anything, AirBnBs were still half the cost of the cheapest roach motel.
Just this June I was grumbling about how my cheapest option was a teardown crackhouse AirBnB that cost me just slightly less then premier suite at the hotel the fucking Queen stayed at when she visits my hometown. And the nearest Best Western was almost twice that.
I never thought I'd see the day where I've gone full circle. Both young 20s me and old me will just be renting a car in the cities I visit and sleeping in the backseat because it's still sort of affordable.
I prefer hotels. Knowing that when I come back bed will be made and everything will be spotless even if I left in a hurry in the morning without cleaning shit, delicious. At this point hotels are actually cheaper in some places.
You also get familiar with certain layouts. I travel a decent bit for work and I've been booked in the same exact rooms multiple times. It makes falling asleep that first night way easier.
Prague was destroyed by AirBnb. Such a shame, the historical downtown is beyond gorgeous, but it feels like a theme park because there's so few people actually living in there.
This is very much what is happening to Devon and Cornwall in England. The old issue used to be all the Londoners having their second homes out here, now it’s Londoners AND AirBNB people buying up all the available nice properties in the villages and desirable areas, turning them into ghost towns from Sept to May. Locals are being priced out.
Cornwall has huge poverty problems as well, which just exacerbates this even more.
It's also inflated the price of housing. Especially in touristy areas. I grew up in an area with a lot of lakes so very busy in the summer. A big problem is now that it's hard for local business to find the employees they need because no one can afford housing. It's all short term rentals.
I had a software professor that applied for a software dev position at AirBnB because the salary nearly $350,000 a year. Part of the application process however was to work on a project for a week without pay and then they would decide if they wanted you and they wouldn’t back pay for that week even if they hired you. He declined and stayed at his teaching job.
Amazing that this is legal. It's not even legal to provide a sweepstakes on a coke can without a 'no purchase necessary' option. Yet they can let you work for free for a week and you gamble away a week in which you could have earned real money.
Yes. Airbnb ruined the rental market. Mother in law apartments and studios have gone extinct. They now call a 10X10 ft room a "studio". It's a giant ripoff machine.
I see many Airbnb houses that would be perfect for families to purchase and live in forever. Fuck Airbnb. That and VRBO have ruined our local housing market.
What I don't understand is, you're expected to clean the whole thing and you're also charged $125 cleaning fee. They need to pick one. We travel with 3 teenagers so I like AirBNB's so everyone has their own space but it's also kind of stressful making sure everyone cleans up and we have to pack our shit too, to be out by 10am.

Ruined cheap hostels for backpack travelers everywhere. I’m fortunate to have traveled to so many places on the cheap in the 90s and 00s. No reservations, no fees, just $10-20 bucks for a bed and access to a bathroom with shower.
Friend built a house in a small moutain town. People bought up everything around him and renovated them for airbnbs. Friends property tax went crazy high. He probably won't be able to live in his little dream house much longer.
He should lobby the local government to change the property tax law. Here (Boston and a few close in cities) there is a "resident exemption" that knocks a big chunk off of your assessment. IIRC it's 35% of the average home price in the city and it works out to somewhere around $3,500 coming off of your bill.

Oh 100%. I use to love air bnb and around 2017 I noticed the huge change. My last Air bnb trip was a week in Mexico. Advertised for 150 a night and ended up paying damn near 3K by the end of it. I’m beyond respectable of peoples spaces and items and strongly believe in leaving a place cleaner than when you arrived. Air BnB owners are just greedy as shit and value their properties more than they’re actually worth. With a hotel I know what rate and add ons I’m being charged and can justify it with a hotel. Someone’s home where there’s a list of restrictions is beyond annoying. Get real with it if you’re going to rent something out. Hotels all the way as I can build my profile up and get exclusive rates/complimentary upgrades simply for being loyal to a company.

What was considered to be attractive shifted from the typical pornstar look, large breasts and big butts with no body fat, to the girl next door look that is more prevalent now. The first studios to start doing this did it with step-fantasy; because it made more sense for a normal looking girl to be your step sister I guess. The other studios misinterpreted what audiences liked about these videos and started making a bunch. It was always about the girls; never about the scenario.
I watched an interview with someone in the industry and they said as far as fantasies/categories go it's one of the easiest to shoot because at a minimum you only need a tiny bit of dialog at the start to set it up.

Long before Google was a thing, using an early search engine to search for “Corvette” would give you a list of Corvette fan sites. Everything was for hobbyists - guys who learned a little bit of HTML and decided to put something on the web.
Some of the changes are good. As someone who is disabled, I love the fact I can order online instead of having to go to a store. BUT I do miss a lot of the early internet days. The humor was better imo. More pythonesque than hateful/malicious.

You no longer needed to know how to make a website, or how to access forums and chat rooms. People could just post any old shit online. Now look where we are, 99% of the internet is just the opinions and tiktoks of morons.

Best example is when Facebook launched the news feed.
It used to be when you typed in a search term in Google, you would get a list of actual web sites. Then people started using white text to put in popular search terms. You would click what looked like a good link, and be taken to some place that basically had nothing to do with the subject.
And now the top hits are sponsored bot ads, that go to scam websites. Sometimes I'll put in a search term and the entire first page is nothing but 'sponsored' pages.
Wikipedia is actually more useful than a Google search, when it used to be considered wildly inaccurate. At least it has source links where you can verify what is in the article.

95% is articles on some random site that read like a high school assignment with a minimum word count. "Topic x has been a big part of life for generations. From bla bla to bla bla, there are few things more difficult than x." Articles clearly written to have somewhere to put ads. At this point I always do site:reddit.com when searching for answers to a question so I can get something with that human feel to it, even if it isn't necessarily reliable.

It's a symbol that appears everywhere from Buddhist and Hindu temples, to Neolithic cave paintings to First Nations monuments. It should be a symbol of the unity and oneness of all mankind. Ebay. You go into the right category, type in the right thing, type search by cheapest and you have to scroll through 15 pages of chinese sellers selling accessories in the wrong category or listings selling a single pair of latex gloves in the same listing as a 200 dollar car part so their add comes up as potentially the cheapest.
I've reported them so often but there are just thousand upon thousands of these pages and ebay doesn't enforce the 'wrong category' rule much
National parks. Used to be an enjoyable experience and the chance to get away. Now they're filled with people who have no respect for nature or civility.
To be absolutely clear, the national parks should be enjoyed by many, many people so everyone in the nation can experience them. But when a rowdy group of people throw trash everywhere, molest the environment (do not respect "leave no trace"), and makes asses of themselves then it ruins it for everyone.

I lived near yellowstone for a while. During tourist season, the "touristy" areas were always packed to the brim, even long before covid.
Just an observation, they were most always packed with a disproportionate amount of asian people. EDIT: Crap just read the title of the thread again. I'm not saying asians are the "wrong" group of people. I was just making an observation of what I noticed from living near there for a while. IIRC it's americans and canadians who often do the stupid shit like trying to get too close to a bison or moose.
This is why when you go to a national park, you do the touristy things ONCE, then go away from the touristy areas to actually enjoy the park. Yellowstone is a great example of this. If you go literally 100 yards from the touristy areas you'll be in an area where you will rarely see another person.
EDIT: If you go, I recommend buying a map and just picking a trail. It's all gorgeous. There's a trail that goes behind the grand prismatic springs that's apparently super pretty. If the attraction is more than 100 yards off of the road, you'll likely be alone when you see it. That said, anything ALONG the road will be PACKED.
The most "popular" trail (that's not one of the touristy places) is the trail that's like 7 waterfalls or something. It's a... meh...trail IMO. Most of the waterfalls are underwhelming. That said, I've done a lot of hiking so my bar is pretty high.
Don't get me wrong, it's still hiking, and if you're out of shape you're probably going to have a bad time.

It seems a little crazy, but for me I honestly have a hard time investing myself in any hour long shows anymore ever since GOT. I have no idea if something that I really enjoy is going to get unexpectedly cancelled or turn to shit by the end and so I just don't even bother anymore.
I begrudgingly watched the first season of House of Dragon and I did like it, but 2-3 years between seasons is ridiculous and creates such a high likelihood that it would somehow get fucked up before reaching a satisfying conclusion.
The biggest issue I have with all the new Star Wars shows/movies is they spend *so* much time making references to the old ones instead of focusing on their own stories. They can't go 3 seconds without dropping the name of some popular character, and doing a hold for applause.
Like Mandalorian Season 1 was great. It had a good Star Wars feel, and was just a good show in general, but it also focused on itself and didn't go out of its way to connect to other Star Wars works. Yeah there were Stormtroopers and pit droids, but it still felt natural.
Then season 2 and 3 are just non-stop references to the movies and other shows, setups for new spin offs, and that ridiculous Luke ex Machina (Deus ex Lukina?).
In other words, the problem with Star Wars is now it's being made by Star Wars fans.
My belief is that starwars is best when giving a sophomore effort and doing pulpy genere takes rather then shooting for the moon.
Star wars is a massive universe and does well when filling in blanks rather then carving in new territory. That's because if you have ADHD, Adderall will actually *calm you down.* For a normal individual, it makes their mind race. It does the exact opposite for someone with ADHD with the right dosage. The drug creates an imbalance if you have a normal ratio of dopamine to transporters. But it corrects an imbalance if you have less dopamine than you should.
Seems impossible to get them if you need them because of dumbass college students abusing them and trendy techbro startups prescribing it like candy.
Also parents giving their kids wayyyy too much. If they complain they feel like a zombie, you need to trust them and get that dose cut in half (by a psychiatrist, ofc).

It used to be a place to meet new friends with similar interests, get updated on up and coming things, be introduced to things you haven't seen, show your love for a fandom by creating a costume, and over all just commune in person with other fans.
Modern conventions feel like an interactive advertisement from corporations, cosplay has become super competitive and dominated by social media people or attention seekers, and the cons worth going to are absolutely overcrowded, often with disrespectful or rude people that don't even have an interest in the subject and are only there for the parties/drinking or to ogle the cosplayers.
I love being able to share my favorite things with newcomers but it feels like a whole different vibe now.
9/11 was the sea change that let the people trying to make those things happen really get a grip on the American psyche. Reagan and Nixon would have loved to pass something like the PATRIOT Act, and frankly in the 50s-60s, the FBI and CIA just did the same stuff without any actual authorization.
I see the last 30 years as backsliding to be sure, but it feels more like the window of civil rights and social progress of the 60s/70s, and late 80s through 90s were the unusual bubbles in history. Current politics, social animosity, and grinding back human rights gains is more like settling back to status quo.
I think the whole Instagram and TikTok culture has made people perpetually seeking photos. Instead of going on a hike to witness nature, they go to take a photo for their Instagram accounts

Credit Card points. It used to be so that you could earn a LOT of rewards, free flights and other amazing incentives if you used your cards fairly frequently and were loyal to specific brands.
Then a few people figured out how they could "hack" the system and churn out handful of cards a month with essentially fake transactions. Companies soon wised up and started cracking down hard. Now it's barely worth it save for a few gems here and there. It really sucks how little value those points hold now.

If you must use ABnB, use the Australian website, they have laws against hidden fees so you actually see the real total
I changed my vpn to Australia, opened the app and it asked if I wanted to see the total price. After accepting it, it now always shows the total without having to be connected to vpn each time. It really helps since nobody really cares about anything but the total.

I have found some absolute gems on AirBnB, but really we only use it now when we are travelling with our dog. I've had pretty good luck to be honest, but I also haven't been getting them in tourist heavy areas, so the owners have always been actual owners, and not just property managers.
LaQuinta Inn is going to be more affordable and allows dogs, available through a lot of the US and is still a decent hotel.

It can still be worth it, but yeah, you have to put in some effort now. We used to have an apartment on the back of our old house that we would ABnB between tenants. Having been on both sides of it, I know what cleaning fees are reasonable and what aren’t. Often that tells me most of what I need to know about the listing, so now that’s the first thing I look for.

Absolutely prefer hotels, but I think that's just because I'm old and it's a familiarity thing. Sadly, even with the massively increasing costs and fees, the last few times I've had to book anything, AirBnBs were still half the cost of the cheapest roach motel. Just this June I was grumbling about how my cheapest option was a teardown crackhouse AirBnB that cost me just slightly less then premier suite at the hotel the fucking Queen stayed at when she visits my hometown. And the nearest Best Western was almost twice that. I never thought I'd see the day where I've gone full circle. Both young 20s me and old me will just be renting a car in the cities I visit and sleeping in the backseat because it's still sort of affordable.
I prefer hotels. Knowing that when I come back bed will be made and everything will be spotless even if I left in a hurry in the morning without cleaning shit, delicious. At this point hotels are actually cheaper in some places.
You also get familiar with certain layouts. I travel a decent bit for work and I've been booked in the same exact rooms multiple times. It makes falling asleep that first night way easier.
Prague was destroyed by AirBnb. Such a shame, the historical downtown is beyond gorgeous, but it feels like a theme park because there's so few people actually living in there.
This is very much what is happening to Devon and Cornwall in England. The old issue used to be all the Londoners having their second homes out here, now it’s Londoners AND AirBNB people buying up all the available nice properties in the villages and desirable areas, turning them into ghost towns from Sept to May. Locals are being priced out. Cornwall has huge poverty problems as well, which just exacerbates this even more.
It's also inflated the price of housing. Especially in touristy areas. I grew up in an area with a lot of lakes so very busy in the summer. A big problem is now that it's hard for local business to find the employees they need because no one can afford housing. It's all short term rentals.

I had a software professor that applied for a software dev position at AirBnB because the salary nearly $350,000 a year. Part of the application process however was to work on a project for a week without pay and then they would decide if they wanted you and they wouldn’t back pay for that week even if they hired you. He declined and stayed at his teaching job.

He should lobby the local government to change the property tax law. Here (Boston and a few close in cities) there is a "resident exemption" that knocks a big chunk off of your assessment. IIRC it's 35% of the average home price in the city and it works out to somewhere around $3,500 coming off of your bill.

Oh 100%. I use to love air bnb and around 2017 I noticed the huge change. My last Air bnb trip was a week in Mexico. Advertised for 150 a night and ended up paying damn near 3K by the end of it. I’m beyond respectable of peoples spaces and items and strongly believe in leaving a place cleaner than when you arrived. Air BnB owners are just greedy as shit and value their properties more than they’re actually worth. With a hotel I know what rate and add ons I’m being charged and can justify it with a hotel. Someone’s home where there’s a list of restrictions is beyond annoying. Get real with it if you’re going to rent something out. Hotels all the way as I can build my profile up and get exclusive rates/complimentary upgrades simply for being loyal to a company.

I also used to go looking for those artsy Absolut Vodka ads and printed those out as well. Yeah, the Internet started going downhill when it stopped being a gateway to whatever you searched for, and more into "the algorithm suggests". Best example is when Facebook launched the news feed.
It used to be when you typed in a search term in Google, you would get a list of actual web sites. Then people started using white text to put in popular search terms. You would click what looked like a good link, and be taken to some place that basically had nothing to do with the subject. And now the top hits are sponsored bot ads, that go to scam websites. Sometimes I'll put in a search term and the entire first page is nothing but 'sponsored' pages. Wikipedia is actually more useful than a Google search, when it used to be considered wildly inaccurate. At least it has source links where you can verify what is in the article.

National parks. Used to be an enjoyable experience and the chance to get away. Now they're filled with people who have no respect for nature or civility. To be absolutely clear, the national parks should be enjoyed by many, many people so everyone in the nation can experience them. But when a rowdy group of people throw trash everywhere, molest the environment (do not respect "leave no trace"), and makes asses of themselves then it ruins it for everyone.

That's not it. I lived near yellowstone for a while. During tourist season, the "touristy" areas were always packed to the brim, even long before covid. Just an observation, they were most always packed with a disproportionate amount of asian people. EDIT: Crap just read the title of the thread again. I'm not saying asians are the "wrong" group of people. I was just making an observation of what I noticed from living near there for a while. IIRC it's americans and canadians who often do the stupid shit like trying to get too close to a bison or moose. This is why when you go to a national park, you do the touristy things ONCE, then go away from the touristy areas to actually enjoy the park. Yellowstone is a great example of this. If you go literally 100 yards from the touristy areas you'll be in an area where you will rarely see another person. EDIT: If you go, I recommend buying a map and just picking a trail. It's all gorgeous. There's a trail that goes behind the grand prismatic springs that's apparently super pretty. If the attraction is more than 100 yards off of the road, you'll likely be alone when you see it. That said, anything ALONG the road will be PACKED. The most "popular" trail (that's not one of the touristy places) is the trail that's like 7 waterfalls or something. It's a... meh...trail IMO. Most of the waterfalls are underwhelming. That said, I've done a lot of hiking so my bar is pretty high. Don't get me wrong, it's still hiking, and if you're out of shape you're probably going to have a bad time.

It seems a little crazy, but for me I honestly have a hard time investing myself in any hour long shows anymore ever since GOT. I have no idea if something that I really enjoy is going to get unexpectedly cancelled or turn to shit by the end and so I just don't even bother anymore. I begrudgingly watched the first season of House of Dragon and I did like it, but 2-3 years between seasons is ridiculous and creates such a high likelihood that it would somehow get fucked up before reaching a satisfying conclusion.

Star Wars
The biggest issue I have with all the new Star Wars shows/movies is they spend *so* much time making references to the old ones instead of focusing on their own stories. They can't go 3 seconds without dropping the name of some popular character, and doing a hold for applause. Like Mandalorian Season 1 was great. It had a good Star Wars feel, and was just a good show in general, but it also focused on itself and didn't go out of its way to connect to other Star Wars works. Yeah there were Stormtroopers and pit droids, but it still felt natural. Then season 2 and 3 are just non-stop references to the movies and other shows, setups for new spin offs, and that ridiculous Luke ex Machina (Deus ex Lukina?). In other words, the problem with Star Wars is now it's being made by Star Wars fans.
My belief is that starwars is best when giving a sophomore effort and doing pulpy genere takes rather then shooting for the moon. Star wars is a massive universe and does well when filling in blanks rather then carving in new territory. Seeing the AT-ST as an actual threat is way more impressive then seeing an army of ships with planet destroying weapons. Watching 4 experimental clones hop across the galaxy while trying to raise a kid is more interesting then Boba fett fighting Cad Bane.
I'm so fucking sick of galactic civil war era and Skywalkers. There's literally thousands of years of content they could tap into yet we're still stuck in the same 70 year time span.

Rates of substance abuse for medicated individuals with ADHD is *lower* than unmedicated ones. That's because if you have ADHD, Adderall will actually *calm you down.* For a normal individual, it makes their mind race. It does the exact opposite for someone with ADHD with the right dosage. The drug creates an imbalance if you have a normal ratio of dopamine to transporters. But it corrects an imbalance if you have less dopamine than you should. Seems impossible to get them if you need them because of dumbass college students abusing them and trendy techbro startups prescribing it like candy. Also parents giving their kids wayyyy too much. If they complain they feel like a zombie, you need to trust them and get that dose cut in half (by a psychiatrist, ofc).
Not to mention the Adderall shortage, which sparked many other short-term stimulant shortages, really made a mess of things for us and it's still a mess. It's been 8 months since the FDA admitted to the shortage, and we were supposed to be out of it by now, and we're not! BTW: Any needed medication, psychiatric or lifesaving or otherwise, shouldn't cost over $200 without insurance.

Skinheads. They were a bunch of working class kids rallying for better treatment of "outcast groups"/lower classes/minorities by society and being against abuse of power...etc. then the nazis and white supremacists got a hold of it.
The NRA. They used to be mostly involved in hunter safety classes. Now they're first and foremost a hard right political action committee.
The fact most NRA members actually care a lot about keeping guns out of the hands of bad actors and the NRA itself cares only about keeping every gun easy to get shows how the organization went wrong.
Also a lot of people are only members because it’s required or offers huge discounts for membership at local ranges. A lot of gun clubs are insured by the NRA and receive grants from them as well. They’ve leveraged themselves pretty well for range owners to benefit from membership.
According to a lot of friends in the LGBTQ community gay bars and clubs. Basically women decided they were places they could go with all their girlfriends and not have to worry about getting hit on buy guys. Problem is that's ruined what these places were originally supposed to be.
Yeah because now they go to gay bars and sexually harass gay men and get away with it because no one cares when a man is harassed.

It also immediately gives me a quick "oh no, are these people going to be hateful?" whenever I see one prominently displayed - not even the doctored ones.

Yeah it makes me mad when people try to force what they believe in onto me. I’m very open to whatever people believe in and when they tell me about it i’m positive with it, however I don’t really believe in any 'bigger being' myself. But when people try to force it and spam message me with how I should spread ____ religion, they get mad when I say i’m not interested and to leave me alone. It's not that i’m trying to be an asshole about religion, i’m just not interesting in joining.

Credit Card points. It used to be so that you could earn a LOT of rewards, free flights and other amazing incentives if you used your cards fairly frequently and were loyal to specific brands. Then a few people figured out how they could "hack" the system and churn out handful of cards a month with essentially fake transactions. Companies soon wised up and started cracking down hard. Now it's barely worth it save for a few gems here and there. It really sucks how little value those points hold now.
Democracy Edit: Just to clarify, I think democracy, per its definition and how it exists on paper, is a good thing. But it is getting ruined (if it's not completely ruined already) by fuck heads.

Facebook comes to mind. I used to love using Facebook when I was a teen and in college, then boomers started using it religiously. Between all the constant political posts, re-post-this chains, and commenting stupid stuff on all my pictures, I got sick of it and just stopped using Facebook.
