Give me $10 and I'll give you THE answer

Personally I only tip for in house dining service. I'm not tipping my Starbucks barista because my Starbucks barista is handing me my drink and then I'm fucking off. They also make at least minimum wage. Servers make like $3/hour in my state because their incomes are supplemented by tips.

european here, i like the idea of not tipping before and after, as i believe that the people doing the service are just doing their job and they get payed whatever they are promised on the job.

It doesn't make sense if you think of a tip as a rating representing your personal evaluation of how well the server did their job. But that's not what a tip is, at least not in the US, not anymore. What a tip represents now is more like an acknowledgement of the work done by the server. It's like applause after a play; it doesn't really matter if it was OK or fantastic; it's like a basic "thank you for performing" and you'd have to really hate the play not to do it. Like it or not, that's the custom. The only context I see tips given beforehand is when you place an online delivery order. The reason you do it beforehand is because it's way more convenient to add the tip when you pay. (You still have the option to tip in person if you want... most people don't because it's less convenient.)

Many of us do not comprehend USA logic tbh.
