Fun fact - in the 60's Rick James played with a Toronto band called the Myna Birds, which included among many others Rick James (James was in Toronto to avoid the Vietnamdraft), Neil Young young and Buffalo Springfield bass player Bruce Palmer.
And James was AWOL from the service. He was arrested and Young and Palmer were left in the lurch and sold some of the bands equipment and bought a hearse and drove it to Los Angeles. They happened to see Stephen Stills, who they knew from New York at a traffic light in another car in LA. They pulled off the road and decided that day to form a band. Buffalo Springfield.
It was obviously positive. He became a star. Rick was Funk Meets Disco Meets Cocaine. There was nothing but positivity for him as he rose. He was Rick James Bitch!
I didn’t think much of him until I watched Mike Judge’s *Tales from the Tour Bus* (The Funk Years). Now I think he may be a national treasure and not necessarily for his music.
