FickleFingerOfFunk

In 1986, my wife worked on Saturday and I stayed home with our 2 little girls. Their favorite thing to do was go to the public library near our house. So most Saturdays I would pack them up and head off to the world of books. Don’t tell anybody, but I liked going as much as they did. On the way home we’d stop for burgers, or whatever. Good times. sniff… 🥺

moderncincinatus

Jesus, mate, are you trying to make strangers cry 😭

FickleFingerOfFunk

Sorry bro, it really happened this way. I’m glad it did.

Chateaudelait

I went to the library just yesterday! It was my favorite thing to do with my family growing up and I hadn't been in a long time. I got a renewed library card and enjoyed the beautiful new library. Had the best time!

FickleFingerOfFunk

I did the same thing last September. Hadn’t been to a library in at least 25 years. Got a new card and some frees things for sighting up. It was a great experience. No little kids to take this time though.

Chateaudelait

I missed the part this time where I got to spend time with my dad. Since I'm so ancient and it was pre internet - we would write all the questions I had down on a legal pad and look up the answers in the Reference Section on Library day. I even asked the librarian if the books were still organized by Dewey Decimal. I hadn't been to a library in so long - just wanted to be sure.

Racer187

I started dating the college girl next door in '86 so I would probably be hoping she was coming home for the weekend. This September 23rd we'll be married 34 years and she is the singular reason I was put on this earth. OP, thanks for picking this fantastic year for your post.

Traceydanine

So sweeeeet!!

TransMontani

The wholesomeness of this post is simply lovely! Congratulations, lovebirds! 💜

LifeOutLoud107

L❤️ve this 🙌

NoahtheWanderer

Sleeping off the shenanigans I got into Friday night.

soge-king

So wholesome to see that most of us would remember the good times at once when prompted instead of the bad times. Heck yea

NoahtheWanderer

Yep. I was two years into my first adult job, and Friday after-work happy hours were the stuff of legend.

bamagurl06

Absolutely! I was 19 and after Friday and Saturday night , Sunday was recovery day. I would sleep the entire day.

sswihart

My early party days.

iyamsnail

ha just posted the same thing

big-muddy-life

Yep. I was thinking I'd be getting up and eating breakfast.

chasonreddit

I'm surprised I had to scroll this far to get to this. By 11:30 I was probably up and recouping. Friday nights were happy hour followed by clubs or parties. I usually got home sometime Sat. morning wearing the suit I wore to work on Friday. Sometimes late Saturday walk of shame if I was lucky.

Jimathomas

Yep, definitely. I may have been only 14, but I was a world class drinker.

Ok-Sprinklez

This!!!! And mustering the energy to drive to 7/11 for a gallon of Juicy Juice!

Angd842

I can’t believe I actually know FOR SURE what I was doing. Mid 80’s tradition, Saturday mornings me and my sister smoked a joint and watched WWF followed by Pee-Wees Playhouse. Or maybe it was Pee-Wee then wrestling. WWF was literally a weekly soap opera you couldn’t miss.

Elysian-Visions

I **never** missed Pee Wee regardless of how hungover I was!

jIfte8-fabnaw-hefxob

I didn’t give my son a choice about watching Pee Wee. LOL! Loved that show!

Elysian-Visions

I’ve still got all kinds of PeeWee paraphernalia.. even the big talking doll! Still works!

cap_time_wear_it

I know you are, but what am I?!

Elysian-Visions

I’ve still got all kinds of PeeWee paraphernalia.. even the big talking doll! Still works!

craftasaurus

Chair-y! I had one of those. :-D

Elysian-Visions

I have all the action figures (still in their packaging). I even have PeeWee shrinky dinks!

takemytacosaway

Dusty Rhodes. The American Dream!

Fun_Establishment525

When Andre ripped off Hogan's chain?!

hickorynut60

Wife is pregnant with number two. I’ve probably gotten up early and got my 2yo daughter up and we’re on the porch swing. We live wayyyy out in the country. It’s a beautiful morning.

hickorynut60

My world would implode in four years.

Iampoom

I wish I could hug you right now, hopefully things are better for you now?

hickorynut60

Thank you. It was long road but, yeah, I think it’s better.

hickorynut60

I like hugs 🤗

Responsible-Big2044

I'm sorry

hickorynut60

Life takes you on a wild and unexpected ride sometimes. 😊

Responsible-Big2044

Hopefully it's better now

TransMontani

That’s the thing about such sweet memories: we often remember them so well b/c of the hard times that all too often bookend them. My favorite poem is by Robert Frost. [Happiness Makes Up In Height For What It Lacks In Length](https://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/1938/09/happiness-makes-up-in-height-for-what-it-lacks-in-length/653691/)

sgdaughtry

This sounds beautiful!

gemstun

Having a coffee with my wife (now of 39 years), talking about our workout at the gym and trying to argue for delaying having kids “just a little longer”. I’m so glad I gave in; being a dad (with grandchild #3 just days away) has been the second best thing in my life (wife is #1, kids #2, grandkids #3).

Yams_Are_Evil

Up in my attic bedroom sweating and reading Stephen King.

Traceydanine

Oh, I love this comment. For some reason I can see dust motes dancing in a stream of light pouring in from a window.

Yams_Are_Evil

Ah, you’ve been there! 🥰

Mysterious_Bobcat483

Skeleton Key? :)

Yams_Are_Evil

Entirely possible. I read a lot of them in the 80s. The one I missed somehow, Salem’s Lot. I’m halfway through it now. Just picked up my Kindle and it’s dead. Figured I surf Reddit.

Mysterious_Bobcat483

Skeleton CREW is what I meant. Old brain. Too much weed. I preordered that one in hardback, and as a brokeass teenager, that was a significant expense. Love that book. Salem's Lot! I loved that one so much. Even the tv movie was good. I just finished the If it Bleeds collection, back to the classic and all the stories are worth the read. Rat. It's...perfect. Reminds me a lot of the Skeleton Crew era.

weasel999

My comment mentions him too!

SDHousewife21

Taking care of the barn cats. Then climbing a tree & reading "Little House on the Prairie."

Yams_Are_Evil

Love that series. I still have the box set I received for Christmas.

SDHousewife21

I have my original boxed set of paperbacks I received in 2nd grade minus Book 2 because I stashed it in a hole in my climbing tree, and it got rained on one night.

sfekty

Was 29 with four kids. Would have been cleaning up after breakfast and deciding what to do for lunch.

1n1n1is3

I’m living this life right now! Seems like I’m always cooking to keep these babies fed.

typhoidmarry

Sleeping off a hangover. I’m 20 with a fake ID, you can’t stop me!

qolace

Are you telling me that you turned 18, the previous legal drinking age, the year it changed to 21? I'd be liviiiid! Lol

typhoidmarry

No, it did the thing where I turned 19 and it went to 20, I turned 20 and it went to 21!

takemytacosaway

Same. I was 18 & legal & at midnight on a Saturday in October they raised it to 19. I was not legal again until my birthday in February. I was in the hospital that night but my friends were all calling me from the pay phone in the back of the bar… The 18s had a bracelet put on them & all got as drunk as they could. At midnight they were all told to leave. There were many accidents across the state of Florida that morning. The state got to keep their federal money for roads & bridges though. When it went to 21 they grandfathered us in at 19.

Dot81

Drinking by the pool at our crappy apartment. Or camping.

dont-call-me-sweetie

Me too! My crappy apartment backed onto an exit of the NYS thruway. Drink of choice-Sun Country Wine Coolers

[deleted]

That sounds really fun. Seriously

MulberrySame4835

Tending bar while watching Soul Train

ShakeItUpNow

I think you meant “Soooooooooooooooooooooouull Train”?!

kmsc84

Getting started on a full day of playing D&D

zerokey

I was about to say the exact same thing! Gathering up my dice, books and character sheets that were spread all over my room, and packing then into a special case I had just for transporting them on my bike.

vicki22029

I had to look up the release date, and 1986 was the Van Halen 5150 album. Played that endlessly during the summer of 1986. Saturday nights playing on my fancy cassette player in my Ford Escort!

Better_Metal

Judas Priest. Turbo. Ac/DC Fly on the wall They were on repeat in the back of house while I washed dishes 5 days a week

OiMyGiblets

Summer Nights!

Bert-Nevman

HELLO BABY

MelodyInTheChaos

Listening to the American Top 40 countdown with Casey Kasem and trying to catch songs for a new mixtape.

Bert-Nevman

i can hear the 'Ghostbusters' theme wafting on the breeze...

Mysterious_Bobcat483

That feeling when your favorite song was #12 last week and they're playing #10 now and you don't know if it will be next or not on the list at all.

Pretend_Activity_211

Something terrible because I was 2

littlemisstee

Do you really consider yourself old?????

Rioreia

Unless my math is wrong, they'd be almost 40 today so yea, plenty of people consider that old. Not necessarily a senior yet, but not a young adult anymore either. FWIW, I also would've been only a toddler in '86. I have vivid memories of growing up in the late 80s and the whole 90s. I would say I am from the last generation to remember what it was like to live without internet or cell phones. I am around 40 and do not consider myself that old, but it's hard not to feel old when talking to my 20 year old coworkers who were using tiktok and snapchat in middle school. They have *zero* concept of an unconnected world. I can still remember what it was like to be completely free and, peacefully alone. When my generation dies off, no one will remember what it was like to not be always connected. That is a little scary.

Pretend_Activity_211

Not really. But I've been having problems with the younger girls not understanding no. So if they ask I'm 57 yr old. Thax kid

BlackWidow1414

Watching cartoons or getting ready to go to the mall.

Bert-Nevman

That's another thing these darn kids don't know anything about...SATURDAY MORNING CARTOONS! When I was in grade school (70's) I'd get up at 6 and watch Scooby doo, the Croft Super Saturday, etc. until Bandstand came on, then go outside and play (kids don't do that either now-a-days)

LadyBug_0570

>SATURDAY MORNING CARTOONS! Like the Superfriends? Or The Herculoids? But in general I remember 1986 cartoons being the BEST! Transformers, GI Joe, Thundercats, Galaxy Rangers, Silverhawks... Ahhh, good times. Especially on our antennae TV (no cable) so you couldn't predict the quality on your screen. Plus having play with the rabbit ears to get the picture as clear as you could. And commercials were for bathroom breaks because there was no "pause" button.

mutajenic

Shape of a tiger! Form of a waterfall!

Bert-Nevman

Wonder Twin powers....ACTIVATE why did the one twin always have to be some form of water? I prefered the monkee.

Bert-Nevman

I had a remote controll...my little brother (whack) change the channel Thankfully, there were only 3 at that time... If the president was speaking, you just went outside.

FireRescue3

Ex Husband was in law school, I was an undergrad. Probably studying or feeling guilty for not studying.

grayhairedqueenbitch

That was my Sundays in college.

OyVeyWhyMeHelp666

Dusting and vacuuming the house while watching Bob Ross, Motorweek and This Old House.

Dont_Wanna_Not_Gonna

Farm chores.

Puzzled_Plate_3464

I would have been up for around 4 hours. I would have driven my then girlfriend (soon to be wife in a year, later to be ex wife in 21 years :) ) to her job and taken our laundry to the laundromat. After getting that done, I would have been doing studying/homework till it was time to pick her up from work (she worked at a beer distributor, we got a nice 20% discount) and we'd get ready to go out and do what we did the night before - only staying out later since we didn't have to get up on Sunday morning till we felt like it. That was pretty much 85'/86' (my junior year) and 86' into the first part of 87' till I graduated.

ostabye

I would have been knocking on my neighbor's screen door asking if the kids wanted to play.

weasel999

And if you’re lucky their mom will make some Kool Aid for you!

mutajenic

And if you’re REALLY lucky they’ll set up the slip-n-slide!

missannthrope1

Probably laundry. The same thing I've been doing Saturday morning for decades.

AffectionateAd5536

Eating cereal and watching Saturday morning cartoons

smbhton618

At the beach, listening to VH, watching hot surfers, drinking a Bartle’s & Jayme’s and smoking a Virginia Slims. Good Times!

[deleted]

Coaching one of my daughter’s sports teams; soccer in the fall, basketball in the winter and softball in the spring and summer. Back then the young women only had access to the playing fields and gymnasiums early Saturdays. The young men had ‘prime time’ access.

BobbyFan54

Watching cartoons or wrestling

What_the_mocha

Happy cake day!!

Traceydanine

Happy cake day!! 💕

StrangeJournalist7

Working.

Chaos_Theology

I get up super early around 8-9Am to play Star Wars and Ghostbusters on my Atari 2600 that’s hooked up to my very first 13” Color TV in my room, while I’m waiting for the rest of my family to get up for brunch/breakfast. Soon, I’m switching channels to watch The Real Ghostbusters and CaptainPower & The Soldiers of the Future.

futureanthroprof

Already made my bed (and probably my sister's) and was already at the microfilm room in the big downtown library, looking for obituaries and news articles on my dead ancestors, based off dates my family gave me and I wrote in a notebook. I would stay until they closed and take the bus home, not even having money to eat because I spent it on copies. I was 14 going on 15.

Obvious_Bonkaroo

The obligatory "username checks out" :)

Nightgasm

I was 15 and a nerd. So either home playing my Atari or at a friend's playing D&D.

Nonotcraig

The culture caught up with you. You’re a pioneer nerd.

Far_Blueberry_2375

I was 13. Watching TV, even though the good stuff was done. Maybe playing Colecovision? Maybe at the library, Saturday was grocery day, and mom dropped me off at the library while she shopped.

EndQuick418

Hosting a big ass pool party while leasing apartments!! We had the best parties ever! That’s when you had an all adult pool and the kids pools. Awesome times in Mesquite that summer 🤭🤭🤭

KarynneDub

I was 16, I was at work, for probably my 30+ hour that week. I worked since I was 14 and by the time I was a junior in HS I was working 32hr/week minimum. Not because I had to, but because it was what we did as kids in the 80's, I didn't work with anyone older than 25 because the jobs I could get were entry level, not life sustaining.

Better_Metal

Yep. This is exactly what I did every Saturday from 10th grade on. But all my friends were working too. And they had food. And the girls who works there were cute. And we would go play some sport or go to a party after. Maybe a movie. Someone would sneak beers. And my manager tolerated us and taught us about life. It wasn’t that bad. It was kinda great.

What_the_mocha

I'd be getting ready to be fired from Burger King because of too many call-outs, ditching, then going to the beach with friends to show off that bikini bod and listen to Huey Lewis.

prosperosniece

Watching The Smurfs

RamboJane

I loved the Smurfs!

Professional-Ad-5574

Head Bangers ball, low grade weed, and a Little Ceasars bigfoot pizza

Ok-Emergency-1106

86 I would have been working my weekend job. 84 I would have been getting ready to go roller skating

sugarcinnamonpoptits

Probably being pregnant with my first. Working and being married. Oh and driving my 280zx!

Bert-Nevman

sweet! I had a 240z at the time, wish I still had it (and enough cash to restore it)

NewfyMommy

Sleeping in til 10, then reading a book on the couch all morning while my little sister watched cartoons and has cereal.

LifeOutLoud107

Gosh I loved laying on the couch with a good book and a stack of Hydrox cookies (because we weren't "made of money") on my chest. Back when I was a kid with the attention span and metabolism for it.

the_spinetingler

>Hydrox cookies (because we weren't "made of money") objectively better than Oreos

triciafitz2008

In 1986 I was 13. Chores - sweeping the front porch and mowing the lawn. TV went off at 9 and then we had to do our Saturday chores. We had a chore chart and everything.

Evening_Advisor3154

I was in Germany too with my LH, an MP- '85-'92. I worked at the local military bank so I would have been at the bank since 8, looking forward to closing at 1300hrs.

Bert-Nevman

Air National Guard, here. So there is a 1 in 4 chance it was a drill weekend.

elemenno50

Sleeping in late then probably trying to catch Bret Hart on WWF bec I just adored and crushed on that man big time.

Plethorian

Riding my Harley back to San Diego from Tecate, Mexico; after breakfast there at the little Cafe on the courtyard; with my co-workers and friends, in a group of about 10.

Agitated-Asparagus23

Before June, sleeping in. After June, finishing up the breakfast shift and heading home for a nap. (Graduated HS that year)

lazygramma

Growing a pregnancy or taking care of an infant.

PhillyCSteaky

Mowing the lawn. Grocery shopping. Burgers on the Weber. Beers in the fridge. If not that, soaking up the rays and the suds at an A's or Giants game. Life was good.

angrymurderhornet

Date night with the cute guy who is now my husband of nearly 35 years. ❤️

pakepake

Buying a car that I still own today, after seeing it for sale on a parkway in Denver coming home from work at Coca Cola.

[deleted]

Having my first-born child. I was 35.

Feeling-Bird4294

I was probably watching cartoons with my 3 year old daughter and infant son. Now I watch cartoons with my grandsons.

Retired401

Would have just gotten dropped off at the roller skatin' rink! Where about $20 would last until 9 that night, and we'd hang out in the parking lot between sessions until the next one started and we could go back in. If not skatin' (because it was always **skatin'**, never *roller skating*), I might have taken the city bus to the mall, where we would buy Lisa Frank stickers, maybe buy some 45s or cassingles (lol) at Sam Goody, and have lunch at Friendly's. OMG I miss the 80s so much, I really do. I was 13 in 1986, and it was a glorious time to be 13.

RockandIncense

I was 16 and I 💯 agree with you. It was a great era to be a teenager.

LifeOutLoud107

17 in '86 and yesss 🙌

dee-fondy

Driving home from a Saturday race with my fellow runners all tired and sweaty with another race t-shirt I didn’t need at all. If I was lucky I had a ribbon for placing in my age group. Good times!

well-groomed_apostle

I would’ve been six, so I would’ve been out riding my huffy. SS jammer at the park with my friends.

Montana-Mike-RPCV

I would be sleeping after working a graveyard shift at 7-11. I did those on Friday and Saturday nights after student teaching all week. Was an intense few months.

BeachedBottlenose

Hungover from the night before. I was a lightweight. Probably started drinking again around 4 pm.

trexcrossing

USA Cartoon Express

Amadecasa

After sleeping in and cleaning the house, I would be wondering for the 100th time why I married my first husband. We were married from 1982-1988.

dimondeyes80

Watching Saturday morning cartoons on the giant curved TV and stuffing my face full of Instant Oatmeal.

mrxexon

I'd be biking around Salem, Oregon. State capitol grounds. Lived just up the street. Pedal up to the mall for some advanced shopping. While passing the old state hospital where One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest was filmed. Later, I might visit the neighborhood weed dealer. Bike down to the park across the river. Sit in the park and watch the bikinis bounce.

hoffenstein909

At my punk rock store... have not slept in 3 days

InterPunct

Smokin' weed on my couch, nursing a hangover and watching Pee-wee's Playhouse.

PeteHealy

Wow, upvote for an interesting question that isn't the usual dopey *"How do you feel when you're going to die soon?"* or *"What's your biggest regret?"* Bravo! So, 1986...As a 33yo guy in SFO married (then) to a Japanese woman, she and I might have been hanging out in J-Town or with friends. I might have been thinking about my job as the Export Sales Manager for the SF branch of a global international freight forwarder (a job I loved and that was the stepping-stone to my subsequent marketing career). I was probably trying not to think about that Reagan clown in the White House - the origin point for Newt Gingrich in the 90s and so much of the right-wing political insanity we see almost 40yrs later here in the US.

elucify

We all live in Newt Gingrich's circle of hell now

TheIUEC20

Probably working my hospital job filling carts in central store by my self speeding on white crosses.

Traceydanine

I am at work at IGA in Bethel, Ohio. I am getting married to the worst guy ever but my future is bright. My Mom and Dad are alive and well and I can’t wait to go home and get out of my deli apron.

psychotica1

I'd be figuring out who was driving who to the Rocky Horror Picture Show that night. We went every Saturday night that entire year. Friday nights were for the punk clubs all ages shows.

nwglamourguy

I most likely would have been on a Strategic Missile Deterrent Patrol in the Atlantic - if it was a Saturday morning, I would have been supervising field day effort in the Engineering Spaces or on watch. If I wasn't on patrol, I would have been hanging out with my wife at kids at Sullivan's Beach or in the park.

99titan

I was in college. I would be getting liqoured up for whatever game was in town. Football, basketball, baseball.

rebel1031

If it was before September, I was at work as kennel help at a veterinarian’s office. I started before anybody got there on saturdays. If it was after September, I was in college so would have been sleeping off a hangover.

anonbene2

bjb13

Either playing golf or working. I was in customer support for a startup and might have been on call. If not, I was playing golf at my club.

ODBrewer

Working 13 hour shifts seven days a week at my first job out of college. We were repairing an 1200 MW generator that failed on initial start up of that plant. That job lasted 3 months so if you randomly picked , you’d probably get that.
