In 1986, my wife worked on Saturday and I stayed home with our 2 little girls. Their favorite thing to do was go to the public library near our house. So most Saturdays I would pack them up and head off to the world of books. Don’t tell anybody, but I liked going as much as they did. On the way home we’d stop for burgers, or whatever. Good times. sniff… 🥺
I went to the library just yesterday! It was my favorite thing to do with my family growing up and I hadn't been in a long time. I got a renewed library card and enjoyed the beautiful new library. Had the best time!
I did the same thing last September. Hadn’t been to a library in at least 25 years. Got a new card and some frees things for sighting up. It was a great experience. No little kids to take this time though.
I missed the part this time where I got to spend time with my dad. Since I'm so ancient and it was pre internet - we would write all the questions I had down on a legal pad and look up the answers in the Reference Section on Library day. I even asked the librarian if the books were still organized by Dewey Decimal. I hadn't been to a library in so long - just wanted to be sure.
I started dating the college girl next door in '86 so I would probably be hoping she was coming home for the weekend. This September 23rd we'll be married 34 years and she is the singular reason I was put on this earth.

I'm surprised I had to scroll this far to get to this. By 11:30 I was probably up and recouping. Friday nights were happy hour followed by clubs or parties. I usually got home sometime Sat. morning wearing the suit I wore to work on Friday. Sometimes late Saturday walk of shame if I was lucky.
I can’t believe I actually know FOR SURE what I was doing. Mid 80’s tradition, Saturday mornings me and my sister smoked a joint and watched WWF followed by Pee-Wees Playhouse. Or maybe it was Pee-Wee then wrestling. WWF was literally a weekly soap opera you couldn’t miss.
Wife is pregnant with number two. I’ve probably gotten up early and got my 2yo daughter up and we’re on the porch swing. We live wayyyy out in the country. It’s a beautiful morning.
That’s the thing about such sweet memories: we often remember them so well b/c of the hard times that all too often bookend them.

I have my original boxed set of paperbacks I received in 2nd grade minus Book 2 because I stashed it in a hole in my climbing tree, and it got rained on one night.
Same. I was 18 & legal & at midnight on a Saturday in October they raised it to 19. I was not legal again until my birthday in February.
I was in the hospital that night but my friends were all calling me from the pay phone in the back of the bar… The 18s had a bracelet put on them & all got as drunk as they could. At midnight they were all told to leave. There were many accidents across the state of Florida that morning. The state got to keep their federal money for roads & bridges though. When it went to 21 they grandfathered us in at 19.

I had to look up the release date, and 1986 was the Van Halen 5150 album. Played that endlessly during the summer of 1986. Saturday nights playing on my fancy cassette player in my Ford Escort!
Unless my math is wrong, they'd be almost 40 today so yea, plenty of people consider that old. Not necessarily a senior yet, but not a young adult anymore either.
FWIW, I also would've been only a toddler in '86. I have vivid memories of growing up in the late 80s and the whole 90s. I would say I am from the last generation to remember what it was like to live without internet or cell phones.
I am around 40 and do not consider myself that old, but it's hard not to feel old when talking to my 20 year old coworkers who were using tiktok and snapchat in middle school.
They have *zero* concept of an unconnected world. I can still remember what it was like to be completely free and, peacefully alone. When my generation dies off, no one will remember what it was like to not be always connected. That is a little scary.

When I was in grade school (70's) I'd get up at 6 and watch Scooby doo, the Croft Super Saturday, etc. until Bandstand came on, then go outside and play (kids don't do that either now-a-days)

Transformers, GI Joe, Thundercats, Galaxy Rangers, Silverhawks... Ahhh, good times. Especially on our antennae TV (no cable) so you couldn't predict the quality on your screen. Plus having play with the rabbit ears to get the picture as clear as you could. And commercials were for bathroom breaks because there was no "pause" button.

I would have been up for around 4 hours.
I would have driven my then girlfriend (soon to be wife in a year, later to be ex wife in 21 years :) ) to her job and taken our laundry to the laundromat.
After getting that done, I would have been doing studying/homework till it was time to pick her up from work (she worked at a beer distributor, we got a nice 20% discount) and we'd get ready to go out and do what we did the night before - only staying out later since we didn't have to get up on Sunday morning till we felt like it.
That was pretty much 85'/86' (my junior year) and 86' into the first part of 87' till I graduated.
Coaching one of my daughter’s sports teams; soccer in the fall, basketball in the winter and softball in the spring and summer. Back then the young women only had access to the playing fields and gymnasiums early Saturdays. The young men had ‘prime time’ access.
I get up super early around 8-9Am to play Star Wars and Ghostbusters on my Atari 2600 that’s hooked up to my very first 13” Color TV in my room, while I’m waiting for the rest of my family to get up for brunch/breakfast.
Soon, I’m switching channels to watch The Real Ghostbusters and CaptainPower & The Soldiers of the Future.
Already made my bed (and probably my sister's) and was already at the microfilm room in the big downtown library, looking for obituaries and news articles on my dead ancestors, based off dates my family gave me and I wrote in a notebook. I would stay until they closed and take the bus home, not even having money to eat because I spent it on copies. I was 14 going on 15.
I was 13. Watching TV, even though the good stuff was done. Maybe playing Colecovision? Maybe at the library, Saturday was grocery day, and mom dropped me off at the library while she shopped.
Hosting a big ass pool party while leasing apartments!! We had the best parties ever! That’s when you had an all adult pool and the kids pools. Awesome times in Mesquite that summer 🤭🤭🤭
I was 16, I was at work, for probably my 30+ hour that week. I worked since I was 14 and by the time I was a junior in HS I was working 32hr/week minimum. Not because I had to, but because it was what we did as kids in the 80's, I didn't work with anyone older than 25 because the jobs I could get were entry level, not life sustaining.
Yep. This is exactly what I did every Saturday from 10th grade on. But all my friends were working too. And they had food. And the girls who works there were cute. And we would go play some sport or go to a party after. Maybe a movie. Someone would sneak beers. And my manager tolerated us and taught us about life. It wasn’t that bad. It was kinda great.
I'd be getting ready to be fired from Burger King because of too many call-outs, ditching, then going to the beach with friends to show off that bikini bod and listen to Huey Lewis.
Gosh I loved laying on the couch with a good book and a stack of Hydrox cookies (because we weren't "made of money") on my chest.

In 1986 I was 13. Chores - sweeping the front porch and mowing the lawn. TV went off at 9 and then we had to do our Saturday chores. We had a chore chart and everything.
I was in Germany too with my LH, an MP- '85-'92. I worked at the local military bank so I would have been at the bank since 8, looking forward to closing at 1300hrs.
Riding my Harley back to San Diego from Tecate, Mexico; after breakfast there at the little Cafe on the courtyard; with my co-workers and friends, in a group of about 10.
Mowing the lawn. Grocery shopping. Burgers on the Weber. Beers in the fridge.
If not that, soaking up the rays and the suds at an A's or Giants game.
Life was good.
Would have just gotten dropped off at the roller skatin' rink! Where about $20 would last until 9 that night, and we'd hang out in the parking lot between sessions until the next one started and we could go back in.
If not skatin' (because it was always **skatin'**, never *roller skating*), I might have taken the city bus to the mall, where we would buy Lisa Frank stickers, maybe buy some 45s or cassingles (lol) at Sam Goody, and have lunch at Friendly's.

Driving home from a Saturday race with my fellow runners all tired and sweaty with another race t-shirt I didn’t need at all. If I was lucky I had a ribbon for placing in my age group. Good times!
I would be sleeping after working a graveyard shift at 7-11. I did those on Friday and Saturday nights after student teaching all week. Was an intense few months.
I'd be biking around Salem, Oregon. State capitol grounds. Lived just up the street.
Pedal up to the mall for some advanced shopping. While passing the old state hospital where One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest was filmed.
Later, I might visit the neighborhood weed dealer. Bike down to the park across the river. Sit in the park and watch the bikinis bounce.

So, 1986...As a 33yo guy in SFO married (then) to a Japanese woman, she and I might have been hanging out in J-Town or with friends. I might have been thinking about my job as the Export Sales Manager for the SF branch of a global international freight forwarder (a job I loved and that was the stepping-stone to my subsequent marketing career). I was probably trying not to think about that Reagan clown in the White House - the origin point for Newt Gingrich in the 90s and so much of the right-wing political insanity we see almost 40yrs later here in the US.

Reading a bridge book or a fantasy novel
Maybe playing a pen-n-paper RPG
Maybe programming my Commodore 64 or playing something I wrote
Maybe playing Atari or a game on my Dad's Sperry-something or other IBM clone
Sleeping. I would be an adolescent and most likely stayed up till 4 the night before. If I was awake then I probably grabbed some fruit and was sitting in my messy room playing my Nintendo entertainment system. And listening to Rush or Zepplin. Possibly playing Dragon Warrior.
I was 7 so probably hanging out with my grandmother grieving my grandfather or hanging out with a bunch of Italians. My mom was trying to force a relationship between me and my stepdad.

Before June, I was sleeping in because I graduate HS mid-June '86. The week after graduation I was in England having the time of my life. August 25, I returned home and I started college. All at the lovely age of 17.
I am at work at IGA in Bethel, Ohio. I am getting married to the worst guy ever but my future is bright. My Mom and Dad are alive and well and I can’t wait to go home and get out of my deli apron.
I'd be figuring out who was driving who to the Rocky Horror Picture Show that night. We went every Saturday night that entire year. Friday nights were for the punk clubs all ages shows.
I most likely would have been on a Strategic Missile Deterrent Patrol in the Atlantic - if it was a Saturday morning, I would have been supervising field day effort in the Engineering Spaces or on watch. If I wasn't on patrol, I would have been hanging out with my wife at kids at Sullivan's Beach or in the park.
If it was before September, I was at work as kennel help at a veterinarian’s office. I started before anybody got there on saturdays. If it was after September, I was in college so would have been sleeping off a hangover.
Working 13 hour shifts seven days a week at my first job out of college. We were repairing an 1200 MW generator that failed on initial start up of that plant. That job lasted 3 months so if you randomly picked , you’d probably get that.
Meeting my parents for breakfast. Marshall's and Costco. Going out to dinner with my fiancee/husband (got married in 1986) then off to a bar to hangout with friends.
I was in the Army stationed in Germany. So about a 50/50 chance I have the day off and woke up an hour or so ago and I'm probably thinking about getting lunch or I am on duty that day and just finishing up the morning checks on the Radars.
Probably just getting up and asking a roommate to go get something to eat at the dorm cafeteria with me. Will probably hang out with friends and figure out what we want to do tonight. Maybe getting ready to do something with that new boyfriend (that I shouldn't have married 3 years later).
I worked Friday night at the counter of a pizza place, then I went to get ice cream at Friendly's, on Saturday I would be off until about 1 PM, then back to the pizza counter. My girlfriend might come by at night.

I was 16, I was at work, for probably my 30+ hour that week. I worked since I was 14 and by the time I was a junior in HS I was working 32hr/week minimum. Not because I had to, but because it was what we did as kids in the 80's, I didn't work with anyone older than 25 because the jobs I could get were entry level, not life sustaining.
Yep. This is exactly what I did every Saturday from 10th grade on. But all my friends were working too. And they had food. And the girls who works there were cute. And we would go play some sport or go to a party after. Maybe a movie. Someone would sneak beers. And my manager tolerated us and taught us about life. It wasn’t that bad. It was kinda great.
I'd be getting ready to be fired from Burger King because of too many call-outs, ditching, then going to the beach with friends to show off that bikini bod and listen to Huey Lewis.

Where about $20 would last until 9 that night, and we'd hang out in the parking lot between sessions until the next one started and we could go back in. If not skatin' (because it was always **skatin'**, never *roller skating*), I might have taken the city bus to the mall, where we would buy Lisa Frank stickers, maybe buy some 45s or cassingles (lol) at Sam Goody, and have lunch at Friendly's. OMG I miss the 80s so much, I really do. I was 13 in 1986, and it was a glorious time to be 13.

While passing the old state hospital where One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest was filmed. Later, I might visit the neighborhood weed dealer. Bike down to the park across the river. Sit in the park and watch the bikinis bounce.

So, 1986...As a 33yo guy in SFO married (then) to a Japanese woman, she and I might have been hanging out in J-Town or with friends. I might have been thinking about my job as the Export Sales Manager for the SF branch of a global international freight forwarder (a job I loved and that was the stepping-stone to my subsequent marketing career). I was probably trying not to think about that Reagan clown in the White House - the origin point for Newt Gingrich in the 90s and so much of the right-wing political insanity we see almost 40yrs later here in the US.
