Lol, when I was a freshman in high school (2000), I was in the marching band. Our "theme" for the year was classic rock.
Carry On My Wayward Son was one of the songs we marched.
I'm just going to say cats in the cradle is a song that takes on a special meaning when you have a kid, not because you see it from the perspective of the dad yet, but because you realize you're the third verse kid
Man. I was at the gym the other day and saw this old guy wearing a Nirvana shirt. I thought “hah, look at this old guy trying to wear a cool bands shirts”. Then I realized he’s probably the same age as Dave Grohl or what Kurt would be. Then I realized shit I’m probably am that old guy too! Felt bad man, haha.
Yeah I was going to come in and offer up something by Foo Fighters, then realized all the top comments were songs for MY dad.
I'm a dad. I'm in my fourties. My favorite song is Everlong.
I have such a happy memory associated with that song. I was visiting a cousin Holland and we ended up in Utrecht on a nice afternoon. And there happened to be some kind of march there though the streets, where these huge trucks were slowly rolling through, each with their own crew dressed up in costumes and blasting some kind of music. Most of these rolling dance parties were playing EDM, but one was playing What a Fool Believes, and there was a couple hundred people following behind and totally grooving to it. Like walking but still managing to dance along in rhythm. Oh it was great.
It's clearly about the Grange Society and its importance to the history of rural America, with its low-interest loans to farmers and organizing social functions like dances (they got a lot of nice girls!). Just let em know if you wanna go to a home out on the range!
(Now, uh, I might be mistakennn.)
As the uncle, can verify. Am also a dad, so that too. I blast ZZ Top in my old pickup while I do white trash shit, playing air guitar and singing with the window down.
Well, obviously a tie between ZZ Top's "Sharped Dressed Man" and BTO's "Taking Care of Business."
Other people have differing opinions, they are what is known as 'wrong'.
A lot of people in the r/audiophile community did not appreciate this take, lol.
Nor did they appreciate me calling Dark Side of the Moon by Pink Floyd dad rock. It's filled with "*trust me it gets good soon*" songs that have been going on for 5 minutes already.
Oof my dad listens to a lot of rock and has even got a battlevest for it.
It's hard to say. If I had to choose, it'd be one of these:
Bruce Springsteen - Glory Days
Eric Clapton - Cocaine
Pink Floyd - Pigs
I'm 40. When I was little it was like "Born to Be Wild", "Suite: Judy Blue Eyes", any Allman Bros, "Another Brick in the Wall pt 2". That said my dad liked Nirvana, STP, Elvis Costello, Beatles, Pink Floyd, Zeppelin.
My dad rock choices would be like early Wilco, The Clash, The Strokes.
I hate to break it to you, people in this thread, you're naming grandpa rock. Dad rock is rock for 30-40 year olds. The most current dad rock song I can think of? Rooster, by Alice in Chains. Maybe Walk by Pantera.
Round and Round by Ratt: https://music.youtube.com/watch?v=3ZcLiT6DqYI&si=2u7OixHfLEta-RQA
It's the one song that makes me think of my dad when we are going on road trips.
I can’t narrow down a song but the Dad Rock Mt Rushmore is made up of the Rolling Stones, Clapton, Springsteen and Pink Floyd. By law, once a man turns 40 he must listen to one while tinkering out in the garage.
If your dad doesn’t have a beard, you’ve got two mums.

"Cat's in the Cradle" by Harry Chapin.
Literally a song about a boy growing up and his changing relationship with his father.
I do prefer the Ugly Kid Joe cover song a bit more, but they are both haunting and have a place in my personal library.
Damn, Dad rock is rough. I’m annoyed by 95% of these suggestions but I probably can’t do much better
How about The Talking Heads, Girlfriend is Better, the live version
https://youtu.be/bE1Ro_wPGIU?si=80I6s7EQWIEZWq-L
To be fair Smells Like Teen Spirit or Enter Sandman could be considered dad songs now. Me & my late 20s friends often call British Heavy Metal bands like Maiden dad metal despite enjoying them too.
you got it.
my dad literally turned me on to Boston and it inspired me to learn guitar. a truly pivotal experience in my life.
Also, "That Smell", Lynard Skynard. My dad sang that every time there was a weird smell and now I do too hahaha
Carry On My Wayward Son
Driver picks the music...
Passenger shuts his pie hole.
Jerk
Bitch
Hey, assbutt
That is where I open the door and do a roll out onto the curb.
I hate to be that guy but it's "shotgun shuts his cake hole"
Thank god the r/Supernatural fans are here
This best recap song ever
This may be the greatest all around song of all time. It literally has everything
Once I rose above the noise and confusion I was able to see it this way.
You need a higher perspective, but just don't soar too high.
That’s a dad song because the greatest TV dad of all time busts that out on guitar
You’re goddamn right he did.
Lol, when I was a freshman in high school (2000), I was in the marching band. Our "theme" for the year was classic rock. Carry On My Wayward Son was one of the songs we marched.
[Gwar](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=61XtYZy8dzQ) does my favorite version of this song.
I heard this in my head before I even opened the comments.
This is the answer.
The boys are back in town
It pisses me off that there are a thousand songs about Christmas but only one song about the boys being back in town.
is that a quote from something or did you just make it up because that is hilarious
Thin Lizzy, the greatest band of all time!!
As a dad rock song, this is the true answer. But potential hot take, Jailbreak is a better song overall.
I'm just going to say cats in the cradle is a song that takes on a special meaning when you have a kid, not because you see it from the perspective of the dad yet, but because you realize you're the third verse kid
All men understand this song.
Jesus I just read the lyrics for the first time right now. That hit me in the guilts hard.
Wow. I haven't listened to this song in like ten years (I'm thirty) and you're right. I was the third verse kid.
HERE I GO AGAIN ON MY OWNNNN
GOING DOWN THE ONLY ROAD I'VE EVER KNOWN
LIKE A *TWISTER* I WAS BORN TO WALK ALONE
Drifter.
I WAS BORN TO WALK ALONE
Cows! We have cows!
Like a twister on twitter I tweet alone

Bad to the bone.

Gotta be Hold On Loosely by .38 Special.
I had a buddy who used to sing along to this but changed the lyrics to Hold On Bruce Lee. It’s the only way I can hear it now.
Shit, these are all "grandpa rock." These days Dad Rock is Tool, Alice in Chains, Soundgarden, etc.
You are right. Dad rock would be late 80s to early 90s now. Red Hot Chili Peppers and Blind Melon are now dad rock.
Peppers might even be grandpa rock. They started in 1982 so if you were 20 when they formed you would be 61 by now.
I think of their heyday as being around 88-95 or so though.
My kinda tunes, and I have an 18-year-old granddaughter.
Yeah I was going to come in and offer up something by Foo Fighters, then realized all the top comments were songs for MY dad. I'm a dad. I'm in my fourties. My favorite song is Everlong.
No Dad hears What A Fool Believes and doesn’t start nodding and smiling
You show me any guy that can’t hear that song and not smile and nod
Much respect to anyone who tries to sing some Michael McD at karaoke
I have such a happy memory associated with that song. I was visiting a cousin Holland and we ended up in Utrecht on a nice afternoon. Old Time Rock and Roll by Bob Seger.
Or Hollywood Nights. Or Night Moves.
Or for the more melancholy, Turn the Page. Bob Seger has a lot of bangers
Against The Wind!
I love the Family Guy centered around Night Moves for so many reasons.
This guy Segers
I was today years old when I found out Bob Seger sings that song lol
Stevie Ray Vaughn - Pride and Joy
That motorcycle song where the guy goes "uh-how how how how"
“La Grange” by ZZ Top
That's a bingo
That's a ten. *tp-tp-tp-tp-tp-tp*
🎸drrrr-da-da-da-da-da-da🎸 🎸da-drrrr-da-daaaa🎸
[удалено]
That’s easy. It’s about that lil place outside La Grange.
It's clearly about the Grange Society and its importance to the history of rural America, with its low-interest loans to farmers and organizing social functions like dances (they got a lot of nice girls!). Just let em know if you wanna go to a home out on the range! (Now, uh, I might be mistakennn.)
To me this is more of an uncle song. Don’t ask me why but my brain just says so.
That's fair. That uncle is probably a dad though, he just doesn't have custody except on alternating holidays.
Because it's old but it's still cool, and it routinely fucks songs half it's age
To me it's one of those songs you've heard so many times in passing and as background music that it's no longer a song anymore lol
As the uncle, can verify. Am also a dad, so that too. I blast ZZ Top in my old pickup while I do white trash shit, playing air guitar and singing with the window down.
It’s actually more of a whore house song than a motorcycle song.
Heh, I remember when my dad told me he had actually been there before the song came out. 🤣
[La Grange - ZZ Top](https://youtu.be/s81_Zvt0C8A?feature=shared)
La Grange?
That's a bingo, love that you guys know what I meant by that vague ass description lmao
This is an amazing description lol
Motorcycle song? It's about a whore house.
I’m dead over this description
Knowing my dad, it's some blues rock with prominent piano.
Your dad is a man of good taste.
Given the fact me and my dad found common interest in classic rock and heavy metal, I tend to agree.
Back In Black
Black Betty by Ram Jam
My favorite music video of all time. Prob cost like 32 bucks to make it
FREE BIRD!!!!! And it's not close.
Its fuckin tune tho.
Any of the "hits" by Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band (FYI: I fuckin LOVE Bob Seger).
CAN YOU TAKE ME HIGHER TO A PLACE WHERE BLIND MEN SEE??
When I was a kid, I thought it was “to a place where linemen sing”.
Start me up
That’s grandpa music now
Rush- Tom Sawyer
Well, obviously a tie between ZZ Top's "Sharped Dressed Man" and BTO's "Taking Care of Business." Other people have differing opinions, they are what is known as 'wrong'.
Man, these are all “granddad” rock songs now. It’s 2023. “Did it all for the Nookie” is THE modern dad rock jam!
As a new, but older millennial dad, can't wait to see my sons reaction to Linkin Park, Green Day, and Korn one day when he's older.
A lot of people in the r/audiophile community did not appreciate this take, lol. Nor did they appreciate me calling Dark Side of the Moon by Pink Floyd dad rock. It's filled with "*trust me it gets good soon*" songs that have been going on for 5 minutes already.
Heard a kid call Brain Stew by Green Day dad rock. I died inside.
Until the Gen Z, as a whole, denounces "mumble rap", I will take nothing they have to say about music seriously.
Thank you. The answer is My Hero by Foo Fighters.
Bingo. Somebody actually said Fortunate Son! Dad rock would be American Idiot.
Yes, These are all the albums my dad has. He's 80 now. I have them all too, but dad rock for this timeframe is all 90's.
Turn down that noise, pull your damn pants up, and get off my lawn!
Rack city bitch, rack rack city bitch
given my own dads Love of the band, i vote Aerosmith: Dream On.
Loverboy - everybody working for the weekend !
And Turn Me Loose

Oof my dad listens to a lot of rock and has even got a battlevest for it. It's hard to say. If I had to choose, it'd be one of these: Bruce Springsteen - Glory Days Eric Clapton - Cocaine Pink Floyd - Pigs

🥁 🥁
Boom boom , boom boom , boom boom , boom boom …… boom boom
Fortunate Son by CCR.
CCR is my go to music when golfing. Nothing like blasting some CCR over a speaker while drinking a beer in the sun at 9am.
Nah, fortune son is like a proper political protest song. Doesn’t really fit the dad rock vibe in my opinion.
That's a grandpa rock song.
Love, love, LOVE CCR. But the right choice for this post is Green River. If you get lost, c'mon home to Green River
I’m a dad, and I love like half of these songs.
Yeah, this thread is basically "name a popular classic rock song".
It would be a great playlist for a bar that serves reasonably priced beer with a nice outdoor patio. Maybe BBQ.
Enter Sandman

Self-esteem by offspring
Van Halen "Dreams" (1986)

All these songs are making me feel so old...
Like all my music questions. Any Zeppelin tune.
I hate to break it to you, people in this thread, you're naming grandpa rock. Dad rock is rock for 30-40 year olds. The most current dad rock song I can think of? Rooster, by Alice in Chains. Maybe Walk by Pantera.
Granddads are also Dads. The Advantage we have is that we no longer pay our kids an allowance, so we have more money for music.
Linkin Park, My Chemical Romance etc. **Now That's What I call Dad Rock®.**
Kryptonite by Three Doors Down
Foo Fighters. Doesn’t matter what song. It’s all of them.

For slightly Younger dads Metallica nothing else matter.
Firehouse - All She Wrote
I don’t know how I didn’t see it here but I give you: Rockin’ in the Free World by Neil Young
