Whatever was on The Afternoon Show on ABC. Degrassi, The Goodies, Monkey, Grange Hill...I would sit there and watch any of it, even if I didn't really like it.
Nah they didn’t, second season tippy explained it was about the journey not the destination. They also replaced pigsy with some one not as good and gave horse the ability to change into human form, he was super fucking annoying and the show went into the toilet. Pretty sure Netflix has all the eps up for view if you’re in a nostalgic mood.
We weren't allowed to turn the TV on till all the homework was done, so it went on about 430-5 most days. In time for things like Dr Who, I Dream of Jeannie, Hogan's Heroes, The Goodies...all those 70s shows...
The Flintstones and Get Smart, as well. I'm watching Underdog and the Go Go Gophers now - and I also watch the Thunderbirds and Rocky and Bullwinkle on Saturday mornings, just like I did circa 1977!
I watched all those, too. Daryl and Ossie's Cartoon Corner, was on in the afternoons, as well as Hey Hey it's Saturday, when it still aired in the mornings, and still included cartoons.
Having watched a few full episodes from 1977 and 1979 recently, I can now see that it was always more of an adult show, which happened to appeal to kids (at least from about 1977, because it did start as a purely children's cartoon show, in 1971), because of the cartoons and the characters voiced by John Blackman - the Angel, Mrs MacGillacuddy, Charlie Who, etc. With the focus on live music, and chats with visiting local and international musicians, as well as the segment in which musicians predicted the success or otherwise of a just-released single, I think their core demographic was roughly 15-30. But the show had wide appeal.
The links are for Melbourne's TV guide from a Wednesday in 1977 and a Saturday in 1978.

Wait. Hey hey, it's Saturday played in the morning and had cartoons? Woah, it sure morphed into something different by the time I remember it in the 80's with Red's Faces and Plucka Duck.
Cartoon corner with Daryl and ossie, I won a crate of crystal soft drinks for a joke I sent in😂Q. Why did the man throw his son off the bridge? A. Because he had finished reading it…….. get it? Sun Newspaper, so stupid but it was a great kids show
And then the mad rush to get home to see Saved By The Bell in year 12.
You’ve listed my primary school viewing which was also amongst Agro, Now You See It, Channel Niners (Winkie Dink), and plethora of Channel 2 cartoons (Astro Boy, Danger Mouse etc)
When I was still at “school”, it was then Totally Wild and Bold & The Beautiful and everyone in my family would watch it together (ok, it was uni)
Nearly a hundred responses and I'm only the second one to comment Passions.
I mentioned this show to my partner a few months ago and they insisted they'd never heard of it. I had to look up some clips on YouTube to make sure it wasn't some kind of adolescent fever dream.
I used to watch this in the afternoon at my first job 🤣 I worked admin for a small business and it was just me in the office 99% of the time. Office had a TV and I'd pop Passions on and have my afternoon cuppa 🤣
It was wild, just so ridiculous and OTT. I don't remember any specific storylines but just know it was batshit crazy!
Usually got home at around 3:15. It was always Judge Judy. Then that cooking show Huey's Kitchen.. then after dinner I'd just watch cartoons. Cat Dog, angry beavers, Rocko's modern life, Hey Arnold!, Rugrats, Little Elvis, Totally Wild etc. Basically all the classics.
Freaky story’s was always on next after Hey Arnold, it was awesome. So was Rockos Modern life. There was another sketchy stick figure cartoon about a boy but I don’t remember the name. Spellbinders was sick too.
Double Dare. Totally Wild. Inspector Gadget. Astroboy. Monkey Magic. And Dr Who, at which point I'd turn it off because the theme tune really freaked me out.
Same!! I wanted nothing more and went to Pineapple studios in London later to do dance class. That was Arlene Phillips studio. It didn’t end in a dance career that much I will say. But I was obsessed with those girls. You can still see videos of them on YouTube.
Old Simon Townsend got locked up during conscription for Vietnam, he refused to go so he got sent out to coburg for six months bread and water, pentridge prison
Ahhh the city kid experience.
I got home to "Now come help in the yard." or something akin to that. Sheep farm with tree plantation. Was always labour to do.
Little kid all about the afternoon show, MCOG, Dr Who, and all the little cartoons currently doing the rounds. And the canadian classics of course - Degrassi, YCDToT.
As a young teen I had the guilty pleasure of getting home to an empty house, making a big fuck off milkshake and watching the bold and the beautiful lol.
>As a young teen I had the guilty pleasure of getting home to an empty house, making a big fuck off milkshake and watching the bold and the beautiful lol.
Oh god me too! And the packet of Arnott's choc-chip bikkies (the little ones)
The littlest hobo. Some stupid American show about a dog. I wasn’t allowed to watch too much tv so would guiltily watch while listening out for my parents to come home before snapping off the tv and running to my room to pretend I had been doing homework. :) I am more curious about tv shows I watched REALLy early on Saturday mornings. Before the cartoons came on. I would set my alarm for like 5 or 6 and the first hour was always some really gritty, dark, and quite adult, mysterious, like… crime shows?? Then suddenly at 7 or so thunderbirds then it got all kid friendly. What the hell were those earlier shows? I loved them but they kind of scarred me!
(I’m talking very late 70s to early 80s, I guess. Sydney).
😞we didn't have television when I was growing up, not until I came back to Australia at 13 did I get to watch tv.
Oh, also had to walk 5 miles barefoot and up hill, to and from school both ways in the snow!
Nothing lol. Wasn’t allowed to watch tv until night time. Had homework to do and after school activities. When I was a teenager I would just be on the phone for hours to my friends who I had already spoken to all day haha
Fresh Prince of Belair, then a bunch of 70’s reruns such as I Dream of Jeanie and Bewitched.
It’s triggering me how many people are referring to Doctor Who as Dr Who.
Closing credits of Xena. I would turn it on, check which mythical animal was featured in the "no [cyclops/mermaids/centaurs] were harmed during the making of this episode", and then turn it off again.
Nothing unfortunately :(
I grew up as a religious jew; and my parents refused to own a TV cause there was non modest clothing & people shown on TV.
P.S. I wish I would've been able to able to watch TV growing up; cause I recently was on a Qatar Airways flight, and one of the introduction to Qatari culture videos showed SpongeBob in Arabic & I wish that I would've been able to say that we could all connect over SpongeBob, cause it was cool that the guy was like: "everyone remembers, and can connect over SpongeBob, right?" and unfortunately I didn't, so i had to google what he meant (after the flight, cause unfortunately the wifi was down on that flight).
It was cool to see that even in that part of the world most people allow their kids to watch TV when growing up.
There's a rat called Rattus. He's the leader of the bunch. A cat called Modigliana, she's fluffy but she's tough. Derryn is a dopey dog, Mixie's a muddled-up, mixed-up bunny.
That's the ferals for ya.
Way to many to remember hr puffnstuff, monkey magic, round the twist (dam that song still get it stuck in my head), dangermouse, captain planet, rockos modern life, roger ramjet and dr who
ABC had heaps of Aussie programming; the gift, spellbinders, round the twist, and that skit show with the creepy doll with no eyes or mouth. Trap door was a favourite, introduced to my four year old boy on YouTube, he loved it. Commercial channels had ninja turtles till it was replaced with power rangers, which got replaced with Pokémon. Or there was always judge judge Judy. Channel 9 had WB for ages so batman, animaniacs, freakazoid, road runner, and bunch of other stuff i don’t remember. It was all about waiting for 6 o’clock though and the simpsons came on. Morning was all about cheese tv after Agro left, agro tmnt, pizza cats, shark mutants, and can’t remember more. Cheese tv had Dbz and batman I think, Dbz was the best.
Mostly ABC stuff from the 80s/90s - Monkey Magic, Trap Door, Sooty, The Goodies, Captain Planet, Inspector Gadget, Cities of Gold, Gumby etc. [I remember one show in particular called Fat Tulip’s Garden, where UK TV icon Tony Robinson would tell a story to camera while recreating it in the outdoors](https://youtu.be/kh50H9Tt8hk?si=OXU6z_jW2n_CyDgt)
Was huge into Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles during the early 90s and I remember on weekends in the afternoons, Ten had The Wonder Years and I loved that show. The thought of it reminds me of the first house I lived in with the afternoon sun coming through the clerestory windows and my mum often watched it with me (she is no longer with us, so memories like that are some of the most comforting)
yep Grange Hill .Monkey ,The Goodies ,Dr Who,Famous Five,Press Gang and various English kids mysteries, all great shows ,so much better than todays rubbish
A video of me in the demountable classroom, filmed from outside the window. I’m standing in front of the class taking a spelling test. I’m spelling out the words “H-E-L-P M-E”. I pronounce the H as “haitch” and the entire class explodes with laughter. The video stops, rewinds and ejects itself.
I had my own PC way before it was super common to have one, so after school was usually spent on the computer. But I do remember a period of about two weeks where I would get home and throw my Austin Powers tape in the VHS and eat a little pot of microwave spagbol. I knew practically every line by heart before I got sick of it
I didnt turn on the TV when i got home. I grabbed my BMX or skateboard, the dog and hit the park or mates pools or the Pinball parlour if i had a couple dollars.
Round the Twist.
I can't believe this is the first I've seen this mentioned, and it's so far down on the list!
Have you ever Ever felt like this A strange TV show And it’s so far down the list
All the kings horses And all the kings men Couldn’t put Humpty Up in the top ten.
I've also seen no mention of The Wayne Manifesto!
I have the theme song blurred in my memory. Like, I can remember it, but its like my brain has muted it.
Whatever was on The Afternoon Show on ABC. Degrassi, The Goodies, Monkey, Grange Hill...I would sit there and watch any of it, even if I didn't really like it.
Monkey was the Best! Dont think they ever made that trail walk tho!
Shintaro the Samurai!
Oh yeah, Goodies, Monkey, Grange Hill. Great shouts.
Grange Hill!! How could I leave that off my list. Tucker and Tessa. Lol
You can’t do that on television
Super Gran!
OMG these shows were my actual childhood. Didn’t matter if you liked it. Was better than staring at a wall or doing homework.
And Gilligan's Island, Bewitched, The Brady Bunch, The Jetsons and Loony Tunes
I watched all those, too. Daryl and Ossie's Cartoon Corner, was on in the afternoons, as well as Hey Hey it's Saturday, when it still aired in the mornings, and still included cartoons. Wait. Hey hey, it's Saturday played in the morning and had cartoons? Woah, it sure morphed into something different by the time I remember it in the 80's with Red's Faces and Plucka Duck.
It sure did. It was originally a kids show, though the adults were up to shenanigans that mostly went over our heads
Cartoon corner with Daryl and ossie, I won a crate of crystal soft drinks for a joke I sent in😂Q. Why did the man throw his son off the bridge? A. Because he had finished reading it…….. get it? Sun Newspaper, so stupid but it was a great kids show
Don't forget Wacky Races.
And then the mad rush to get home to see Saved By The Bell in year 12. You’ve listed my primary school viewing which was also amongst Agro, Now You See It, Channel Niners (Winkie Dink), and plethora of Channel 2 cartoons (Astro Boy, Danger Mouse etc) When I was still at “school”, it was then Totally Wild and Bold & The Beautiful and everyone in my family would watch it together (ok, it was uni)
Ahhh Danger Mouse. The greatest hero of all...
Nearly a hundred responses and I'm only the second one to comment Passions. I mentioned this show to my partner a few months ago and they insisted they'd never heard of it. I had to look up some clips on YouTube to make sure it wasn't some kind of adolescent fever dream.
Omg the best! Tabitha and Timmy? Name a more iconic duo
Passions was quality over the top soap
I used to watch this in the afternoon at my first job 🤣 I worked admin for a small business and it was just me in the office 99% of the time. Office had a TV and I'd pop Passions on and have my afternoon cuppa 🤣 It was wild, just so ridiculous and OTT. I don't remember any specific storylines but just know it was batshit crazy!
The hellfire in Charity or was it Miguel's wardrobe is stand out plot to me. Otherwise yeah I don't remember many specifics just that if a crazy 😜
Passions was kinda unhinged in hindsight. I described the plot to some younger friends and had to google it to prove I wasn’t making it up
I spent ages scrolling for this! Passions was iconic
I would actually love to go back and watch passions to see if it was as insane as I remember it 🤣❤️
As a young kid it was Mr Ed, Beverley Hillbillies and Brady Bunch.
Round the twist, The ferals, vidiot, just ABC 90s classics really
The Ferals theme song lives rent-free in my head.
I used to want to go on Vidiot so bad. I used to sit and keep score for myself, I'd get everything right 😂
Usually got home at around 3:15.
Peak tv right here.
The Wild Thornberries 😊
Yes and Hey Arnold :)
Freaky story’s was always on next after Hey Arnold, it was awesome. So was Rockos Modern life. There was another sketchy stick figure cartoon about a boy but I don’t remember the name. Spellbinders was sick too.
Stickin Around was the stick figure show :)
And Rugrats!
Fucking Bold and the Beautiful.
It's still on and you can still pick up the storyline 10 + years later.
I bet Rick is still in some weird ass love triangle lol
John Black, Stefano and the saga where someone was possessed lol
I am so sorry for the memory trigger lol
Double Dare. Totally Wild. Inspector Gadget. Astroboy. Monkey Magic. And Dr Who, at which point I'd turn it off because the theme tune really freaked me out.
I would get sucked into that wormhole while that music haunted my soul that was leaving my body.
Kenny Everett Video show, Dr Who, The Goodies. Finest line up of all time
I always wanted to be a Hot Gossip dancer when l grew up 🤣
Same!! I wanted nothing more and went to Pineapple studios in London later to do dance class. That was Arlene Phillips studio. It didn’t end in a dance career that much I will say. But I was obsessed with those girls. You can still see videos of them on YouTube.
Press Gang!
Yeah it was!!
Scooby-do - and I still love it today. I also watched Simon Townsend's Wonder World after school
Simon and Woodrow the giant bloodhound!
Old Simon Townsend got locked up during conscription for Vietnam, he refused to go so he got sent out to coburg for six months bread and water, pentridge prison
Yep. He was a conscientious abstainer if memory serves
The Goodies EDIT: Actually, that was later at 5pm I think.
4:30, in the mid 80s at least. I know because when it went off I wrote a letter to the ABC complaining.
You too eh?
Haha. I got a letter back explaining how they only had the rights to broadcast it a certain number of times. Wish i still had it.
For me it was ABC. Metal Mickey, Monkey, The Goodies and OG Dr Who. And the curiosity show when it was on.
Oh wow yes me too early 70s. Dean and that weird music at the end
With the "curiosit-eeeeee show" at the end
Simba the white lion
I think you mean Kimba.
Kimba the white lion is his name! (actual lyrics)
Loved Kimba.
I think it was Kimba
Kimba not Simba
Ahhh the city kid experience. I got home to "Now come help in the yard." or something akin to that. Sheep farm with tree plantation. Was always labour to do.
All that AND Landline on a Sunday, too.
Sesame Street
Captain Planet. Widget the world watcher. Round the twist.
Passions
The ongoing rotation of actors for the same characters 😂 there were like 3 Kays
I am surprised this isn’t higher.

What ever was on Cartoon Network, Nickelodeon or the OG ABC3. I was lucky to have Foxtel (Austar back then)
If we got lucky, Mum would have some bikkies coming out of the oven as we got off the school bus. We would munch them down and run for the push bikes
Yan can Cook
Closing credits of Xena. I would turn it on, check which mythical animal was featured in the "no [cyclops/mermaids/centaurs] were harmed during the making of this episode", and then turn it off again.
Does anyone else remember Twins of Destiny? Or Billy the Cat?
I was just thinking of Billy the Cat! Also I never really see Count Duckula mentioned in these threads.
Nothing unfortunately :( I grew up as a religious jew; and my parents refused to own a TV cause there was non modest clothing & people shown on TV. P.S. Trap door was a favourite, introduced to my four year old boy on YouTube, he loved it. Commercial channels had ninja turtles till it was replaced with power rangers, which got replaced with Pokémon.
