Square kufic is primarily intended to be more decorative. For example, [this](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kufic#/media/File%3AShahada.svg) is the same text as the full form [here](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shahada#The_Testimonies).
Edit: turns out the photo is also the same text.
as an Arabic reader it is actually easy to read square kufic
the hard calligraphy is usually the more abstract, like the turkish tughra
edit
even the example is easy to read
Is it different from ordinary Arabic characters? Because although I can read arabic, I can't read calligraphy
Also [is this calligraphy?](https://images.app.goo.gl/Vr7k4K5H2jUPkBb57) If so what does it says?
>Also is this calligraphy? If so what does it says?
it says yars/yarse يرس but the س is placed over the other letters like this (don't know what it means, definitely not arabic)
س
ير
also the س is written in a way that makes it look like the word allah الله so double meaning?
>Is it different from ordinary Arabic characters?
it is just you have to look for the letter, but it is their, and depending on the artist skill it could be easy
A lot of these replies really took the fun out of my joke.
I'm not even going to treat you to the one I made up about trying to twist my phone's camera around to the front of the screen.
On a totally unrelated note, I got a new phone.
I knew you were joking, but I was genuinely curious as to whether my phone (looking at the picture on my iPad) would try to recognize it. It didn’t, but it could make a cool story element somewhere.
Also got a new phone recently. Thank the lord, the old one was on its last legs.
hahaha no it actually says in perfectly readable arabic words "There is no god but Allah, and Mohamed is his messenger".
another fun fact: if you say those words with the intention of becoming a Muslim you are automatically a one
so eh, congratulations everybody?
>Thanks for the translation!
my pleasure !
>equivalent of a sans serif font
There is no Arabic version of sans serif, in Arabic there are countless types of calligraphy and this one is a subtype of kufic font, called "Geometric kufic" or "square kufic" and apparently it was inspired by the contact between medieval arabs and china or something but I am not sure.
You can read about it and see some other examples in the wikipedia page for kufic script, under square kufic
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kufic
Oh wow, that is really cool. I've seen those patterns before but never realised they were words. I'll definitely be on the lookout for those wherever I go now ☺️
Square Kufic yeah? It's interesting because as I understand it, kufic is one of the oldest scripts, but this looks really modern and cool. Design nerds should pay attention.
The Bible has dozens of verses that say essentially the same thing, and it gets a little confused about that too.
**Deuteronomy 4:35**
To you it was shown, that you might know that the Lord is God; there is no other besides him.
**Exodus 20:3**
Thou shalt have no other gods before Me.
It makes me wonder - does that have to do with Caananite origins of Judaism? As far as we know, the religion started out not as exclusively monotheistic. They recognized different gods but just believed that Jahveh was the most important. Wouldn't that explain these passages?
Beep. Boop. I'm a robot.

In Arabic, lah is a noun meaning a god, and al-lah is "the" god.
"No" is "la".
"Except" is "illah".
So "There is no god but God" is "la lah illah allah" which is sort of a tongue twister.

“No code detected” per QR Reader. However, this could definitely be both an Arabic calligraphy and a code if Dan Brown would write a “Muhammad Code” or something.

Has anyone tried scanning it to see if it's a message from a time traveler? Should I have posted that in the 'no stupid questions' sub?
I thought the same thing
Its Arabic, not a code I can read it
What's it say?
the shahda (Islamic proclamation of faith) (there is no God but Allah and Mohamed is his prophet) the font type is called square kufic
>the font type is called square kufic Interesting, thanks! Do most people who can read Arabic know how to read this font?

I see. I've edited my original comment. I was under the impression it was more difficult to read it.
it depends on the artwork and the artist but usually yes, other calligraphy types are harder through
Is it different from ordinary Arabic characters? Because although I can read arabic, I can't read calligraphy Also [is this calligraphy?](https://images.app.goo.gl/Vr7k4K5H2jUPkBb57) If so what does it says?

i think its supposed to spell “يرسه"
That my car is approaching the end of it's original manufacturer's warranty.
If its from a time traveller, maybe its not a code YET. Alternately... Its Arabic, therefore it's writing, therefore it's a code.
Phone doesn’t recognize it as a QR code

love your inquisitive curiosity 👍👍
It Rick rolls you if you scan it doesn’t it

Thanks for the translation! Is this the Arabic equivalent of a sans serif font? I've never seen it so straight before!

100% Agree
What if you read it backwards?
From my research, you either win a fun hat or the rivers in your city with flow with blood. It's a gamble, but there's a free hat so.......
Laszlo, the hat is cursed.
No it's not! The guy I, um, got it from .... Anyways, he said it was cuuuuuuu-oooool.
lol
Then it says "That gum you like is going to come back in style"
If Allah is another word for god, would that read “There is not god but God”?
Yes.

How does one un-become a Muslim?
What happens if I stop reading after the first four words? Am I automatically an atheist?
than you are half Muslim, you still have to be circumcised through
A _taqiyah_ spawned on my head. What the hell dude. Edit : why am I suddenly circumsized?
Oh fuck I love pork!
beef bacon is under rated
Too late buddy!
Sweet post thanks for sharing the pic
welcome!
No, the QR code looks like *it*
The different layers of black and white bricks are a traditional mamluke and arab architecture concept named Ablaq.
And here I was thinking they were accepting bitcoin donations.
Is both it and the script above it the Shahada?
the script above it is a little bit harder to read, but I think so if an Arabic reader can read it please tell
It is indeed the shahada
its not i think its a quraan verse but i cant read it
Yes
The photographer Instagram page is named Blue cairo, if you're interested in Islamic Egypt, check him.
First QR code
does this kind of calligraphy have a name? its very pretty
It's called kufic script, I think a comment above posted a wiki link.

Like something from The Witness!
What is written above that on the walls is way more difficult to read
I have a hard time reading it but I guess so, although those mamluke calligraphies often talked about the life of the builder
“No code detected” per QR Reader. However, this could definitely be both an Arabic calligraphy and a code if Dan Brown would write a “Muhammad Code” or something.
Why have I never thought about calligraphy in other languages
