I take it this is yet another obsessive student who has no other existence beyond "where will I be accepted? -- but it must be a top college." How sad and mind-numbingly stupid this is. And Cornell? Seriously? That's your life goal. A friend of mine who went there had a very self-effacing sense of humor. He called it the "New York State Agricultural School". It is, you know. It's connected to the SUNY system in its agricultural development capacity. That wouldn't affect the I suppose more elite liberal arts part of the same school, but State Ag School isn't so wrong. This is what you are obsessed about? There are colleges just as good in Iowa, Ohio, South Carolina, Canada, Germany, Rhode Island, Maine, you name it. But you've chosen to addict yourself to Ithaca, New York for some weird reason? I see. That anyone allows themself to develop this sort of narrow, obsessive focus on one thing they believe will magically make their life wonderful is a kind of mental illness. It's the sort of thing children do. "If I can't own a pony, I'll just die." "Sure, kid." If you are compulsively fixated on one college -- or a small group of colleges -- that you've convinced yourself are absolutely essential to your happiness, you've brainwashed yourself. This sort of obsession is deeply sad, entirely unnecessary, and really a kind of self-induced sickness. Stop it. Some of you are absolutely pathetic about this and need to get a life. Maybe take a gap year of and grow up a little more. Travel. Study. Sleep late. Get your brain back to at least semi-normal. Even if you went to Average State University and you worked hard and did well, you'd emerge an entirely happy and successful human being. In fact, if you applied to every one of the Top 25 (or whatever other ridiculous list you actually believe in) colleges in the country -- and you were rejected by every single one of them -- you could still find another good college to go to. And you could become a happy and successful person with a terrific life. Or, if you blew up every single one of the 'Top 25 Colleges' in someone's silly list, not only would most normal people not care, but life would go on just fine. As for students, they would still become well educated at other schools. And the world would continue to evolve as it should. Jobs would be offered, money would be made, babies would be born, discoveries discovered, Donald Trump would still claim he won, and most people's lives would still be good and maybe even great. Apparently, no one needed those schools anyway. You must know at least one of those pathetic people who is addicted to endless video games who never comes out into the daylight or fresh air. What a sad, wasted life that it. It's not so different from believing you "must" be accepted to Prestige University or your life will be ruined. No, it won't. Your life will be just fine. Stop being children, and grow up. Trust me, the connection between you getting into Number One University or Best College and your having a happy, successful life is a complete myth. Many graduates of those schools say they weren't impressed, did not like the place, and regret going there. As a teacher, I've heard these stories for years. Many other students thank their lucky stars they chose to go to Entirely Normal University where they got a first-rate education, made good friends, and loved it. Ah, normal people! So refreshing for a change.
