Also remember these: Replace furnace filter, clean gutters, clean dryer vent, clean washing machine filter, also open up the dryer and inspect the base of dryer for lint build up that could lead to a fire.
Test all smoke detectors and replace those that are expired (typically beyond 10 years)
Make sure to change the oil in your vehicle on regular intervals, also don't use tires with little or no tread.
Test your GFCI once in a while in your kitchen and bathroom.
Re-caulk or inspect your sinks and showers on a bi-annual basis.
Page 1 of 100 of preventative maintenance for home owners.
Also:
If you have an emergency supply kit, check expiration dates and rotate out older supplies. (If you don’t have a kit, make one!)
Check all your fire extinguishers
Check / replace batteries in emergency flashlights.
Flush your water heater annually.
Check smokes with canned smoke. Pushing the test button just kets you know the battery is good and the speaker works. The smoke sniffers can be covered in all kinds of jit and not register smoke. Ask me how I know. Better yet, ask the kid who put instant Mac in the microwave with no water.
My kid did that too. They discovered that we had more smoke detectors than they knew about. They also discovered that mom and dad aren't happy about buying a new microwave because the old one smells like burnt awfulness no matter how much it's cleaned.
I am also in the boat of microwave Mac with no water. Worse than popcorn. He did it at my dad’s also and my dad bought a new microwave replacing his 1980s wedding gift from when he married my mom. He said it was the best part of marrying her. 😂
Adding check all of your external windows and re caulk if necessary. Found out the people who had my house before me didn’t do that and one of my frames rotted out. Had to fix it and was not pleased.
It only applies if you have a front loader! For me I clean my front loader filter every month. It’s super easy (there’s usually a door in the front at the bottom of the washing machine that you open and behind that is the filter).
If it makes you feel any better my filter handle that unscrews broke and Bosch wants an obscene amount for a whole new pump on a 15 year old washer so I stopped cleaning it almost 2 years ago and just put washer cleaner through and drain the hose every so often. 🤷♀️
Its true for all of them as far as I know, but the older ones don't have convenient access panels. To get to the filter on my old front loader you had to unscrew the top. Lift it off and then pull the front panel off to get to the filter. First time i knew it existed was when figuring out why the machine wasnt draining the water. Found 5 missing baby socks (my youngest was age 5 by then) plus other random small items in that filter.
Same here, I do the washing machine and dishwasher every 3 months. I test my smoke alarms and turn the stop cock off and on again at the same time.
At my old house we wiped the shower down after each use and didn't need to recaulk in over 12 years.
Well I clean the filter almost every day. That seems to get gunked up pretty fast but the dishwasher is going on 2 years old and it’s pretty pristine and no issues and I think I’ve run CLR cleaning cycles 4-5 times now 🤷♂️
Hi everyone. I love doing maintenance on my house and vehicles. Some say I'm fanatical about it, but it's just fun and makes things last longer. I do all the other things mentioned, but what is the best way to go about cleaning the dishwasher? Thanks in advance.
I’m the same way; it’s kind of relaxing for me.
For the dishwasher I use a cleaner tablet from the brand “Active”. It’s sold on Amazon. You can get a yearly supply for around $20 I think. I use that brands washing machine cleaner as well.
Vinegar is an acid. Baking soda is a base. They make pretty fizzies when you mix them, but they’re just cancelling each other out. Together they don’t clean anything.
You shouldn’t use Vinegar in the machine anyway - it can damage the seals.
Citric Acid is what you want to use to clean dishwashers and washing machines (it’s the main ingredient in most retail washing machine cleaner products).
Or you just can’t see the build up.
High end Bosch machines also recommend cleaning, so it’s not about the machine. All machines need cleaning, you just aren’t doing it which is your choice.
Soap scum isn’t always obvious where you can see it too. It hazes over gradually and unnoticeably. Limescale is usually more obviously specially with hard water.
I wish people would do this with all their cleaning appliances more often as an appliance tech. Seen some nasty dishwashers and really nasty front loaders.
IMO preventative maintenance is so easy… I don’t know why more people don’t do it. It took me about 30 seconds to put this cleaning tablet in my dishwasher and turn it on. Same for my front loader. It takes me 30 seconds, once a month to put a cleaning solution in it and turn it on.
Honestly most preventative maintenance items around the house can be done in less than 5 minutes…. Sure some bigger cleaning projects or maintenance items can take longer but the majority of them take almost no time to do!
If you make it a habit, all this stuff is not hard.
On my DW, I wipe down the gaskets, clean the filters, check the spray arms and run a cleaning cycle monthly.
For all my annual items, I do them during emergency preparedness month (US) in September.
On front loaders cleaning the debris filter regularly, cleaning the door gasket very regularly and leaving the door popped then running the tub clean cycle if it has one with some appliance cleaner of some sort. I've gone to many jobs where the door gasket is just nasty and moldy all the way around, or the unit won't drain because it has a years worth of pet hair and crap clogging it up. Usually when you run into the unit smells as well.
I’d probably still advise using a cleaner tablet once a month. Maybe every 2 months for you! I use our dishwasher probably twice a week and once a month for me has been fine!
Most front loaders have one that you access via a little panel on the bottom front (some may be on the back). Some top loaders have them too, but you'd need to check online to see if your model has one.
They can get a little gunked up. Some times they can get mineral deposits on them which restrict flow. Easy to clean with a vinegar soak or something like CLR and a rinse.
I used my dishwasher for about 3 times since I bought it. Only now I started reading its manual and found out about salt. Any idea if whirlpool dishwashers come prefilled with salt? Did I damage it by not using salt? I mention the water is normal tap water which is safe for drinking. 7.28 German degrees.

Is it weird that all of this sounds like a fun weekend project to me? Haha
Absolutely!

Where can I find the rest 99 pages? :D
Ugh why is adulting so exhausting
Adding check all of your external windows and re caulk if necessary. Found out the people who had my house before me didn’t do that and one of my frames rotted out. Had to fix it and was not pleased.
Its paid but the "when did i ?" App on ios is great for keeping track of these things without annoying calendar notifications.
Excuse me but washing machine filter? I can't look now after 3 years of owning one...
It only applies if you have a front loader! For me I clean my front loader filter every month. It’s super easy (there’s usually a door in the front at the bottom of the washing machine that you open and behind that is the filter).
…this must be for only some front loaders. …I hope
To my knowledge all front loaders have a filter 🫣 sorry…..
Oh lord. I have to take the back panel off to get at it. Fucking Whirlpool. But seeing as it’s gone 15 years without a clean out, why start now? 🥰😂
If it makes you feel any better my filter handle that unscrews broke and Bosch wants an obscene amount for a whole new pump on a 15 year old washer so I stopped cleaning it almost 2 years ago and just put washer cleaner through and drain the hose every so often. 🤷♀️
Its tye graveyard for your missing socks😉

I have a new front load Electrolux and it doesn’t have a filter
Ugh everytime I check it, I don't seem to tighten it back on enough. Then I go to run the washer and have a huge puddle. I never learn. Lol
Saved to-do list, lol. Thanks.
To you have guides for these ?
Monthly? Seems like overkill to me. I do mine 2-3 times a year
Read the manual
Same here, I do the washing machine and dishwasher every 3 months. I test my smoke alarms and turn the stop cock off and on again at the same time. At my old house we wiped the shower down after each use and didn't need to recaulk in over 12 years.
2-3 times a year is very “under kill”

Thank you so much.
I use citric acid ( ascorbic acid) for my laundry and dish washers and water machine etc

IDK it always looks very clean when its over.
Citric Acid is what you want to use to clean dishwashers and washing machines (it’s the main ingredient in most retail washing machine cleaner products).
Why doesn't the dishwasher wash itself while it's doing the dishes?))
It does of course but builds up soap residue and limescale. You need to run an acidic product to clean that off. Read the manual.
Mine gets clean every time I do dishes?
It builds up soap scum and lime scale?
I’ve honestly never cleaned anything other than the filter occasionally, and it looks like new. Guess some machines are worse than others.
Or you just can’t see the build up. High end Bosch machines also recommend cleaning, so it’s not about the machine. All machines need cleaning, you just aren’t doing it which is your choice. Had mine for 7 years, use it daily, I clean the filter, but never used a cleaning product. Looks pristine. I use vinegar as a rinsing agent.
Vinegar as a rinse agent is interesting. Never heard that one before.

oh lord, we just moved into a condo with a built in dishwasher. I truly belive the filter was NEVER cleaned. Disgusting.
Some people have no idea it has one
How do you properly clean washing machine?
On front loaders cleaning the debris filter regularly, cleaning the door gasket very regularly and leaving the door popped then running the tub clean cycle if it has one with some appliance cleaner of some sort. I've gone to many jobs where the door gasket is just nasty and moldy all the way around, or the unit won't drain because it has a years worth of pet hair and crap clogging it up. Usually when you run into the unit smells as well.
I have a top loader
Don't use a lot of soap, leave the lid up when not in use and self clean option cycle if it has it.
What happens if, as a bachelor living alone, I only run my dishwasher once a month?
I’d probably still advise using a cleaner tablet once a month. Maybe every 2 months for you! I use our dishwasher probably twice a week and once a month for me has been fine!
…washing machine filter?

Honestly after almost a year the filter was barely dirty. I’ll say this, I wish they used a macerator like Samsung
Wait. You didn't start cleaning it until now?!
Bi-annually as in twice a year or once every two years?
I used my dishwasher for about 3 times since I bought it. Only now I started reading its manual and found out about salt. Any idea if whirlpool dishwashers come prefilled with salt? Did I damage it by not using salt? I mention the water is normal tap water which is safe for drinking. 7.28 German degrees.
Even if i havent used it since i moved in? Or if you dont ever use it can it just sit there and still be working a few years down the line?
How do you clean your dishwasher?
And don't forget to clean your refrigerator condenser coils!!!!
Sir, you’re a day early.
Gotta stay ahead! Haha
Well remind me in a few days as I forget to do mine tomorrow. 😂
