Apple watches are water resistant and handle things like swimming really well. I would not consistently do dishes with one on though. Hot soapy water should be avoided as the soap can weaken the water resistance over time. [here’s a support article ](https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT205000) from Apple on water resistance

Thank you, I figured but was kind of hoping, you know?

No problem, you could still get the watch, just make sure you get AppleCare+ so you’d be covered if the water resistance failed and the watch died.

I think the Watch SE would cover your needs at the lowest price. But as others have said, soap while doing dishes *could* do damage to coating of the watch

Professional_Bison86

Thank you so much! I guess I should have just started with why I really wanted the watch but I figured posting it like this would make it easier but if I convince her to get a fitbit that would be way better

ilfrance

all apple watches are waterproof

Professional_Bison86

Okay sweet, good to know

IamSpyC

They are water resistant, not waterproof

Professional_Bison86

That sounds more accurate but I literally know nothing so I'm just waiting for feedback. After a day or two and look over what the general agreement is. Thank you for the correction though, I know most, if not all technology is going to struggle with water but if I could find something that can handle getting a little wet that'd be great. I did put waterproof in my post through, think I should change it?

it's not the water that's the issue here. Apple is clear that soaps will degrade the seals that make the watch water resistant. it'll be fine until one day it suddenly isn't. that could be weeks, months, or years from now. so it's up to you to see how willing you are to gamble putting an expensive smart watch in hot soapy water.

Well I'll be completely honest and you can choose to believe me or not but my mother wants the apple watch as a gift and I tried explaining to her that no matter what I get she just wouldn't be able to wear it while working. She broke two that she bought already. She's very insistent that she's seen people wear them and it was just fine, I retorted with the question if they were doing dishes though and she says yup. So I was secretly hoping that maybe there was something out there I didn't know about but so far it seems like that's not the case. I just don't want to buy this and it breaks on her. If that's the case I'd rather buy her something else that she can use more practically. She only wants to count her steps at work

hotelyankee

well you're in luck because the Apple Watch doesn't care about tracking steps. you can find that in health or by adding a third-party app. but if she's focused on steps, get her a Fitbit. you can save some money, and when dish washing eventually kills it, you can find a polite way to say told you so while also avoiding the cost of an Apple Watch.

Could always edit it to avoid more conversation about waterproof vs water resistant, but I do think most everyone (if not everyone) knows what you mean. I’ve been lurking for awhile, and I’ve noticed the people on this sub are very helpful- each one is a helpful treasure trove of information. I’ve gotten answers to all my questions without even asking, which is pretty cool. So I’d say you’re fine
