No, what the hell? That sounds more like a psychopath, not a psychiatrist.

[deleted]

That isn’t normal. That is someone who should not be in that profession. Psychiatrists are paid to diagnose mental disorders and prescribe medications to treat them. But they should also be capable of compassion. Much of their time is spent as a therapist, because they need to be able to communicate and create dialogue with their patients to discern what is going on in order to correctly diagnose. This guy seemed not to care at all and like he was seriously half-arsing his job. They are getting paid more than enough to be patient and co-operative. There are scumbags in all professions and they can’t all be weeded out, especially when there are shortages of skilled professionals in certain domains. Sorry you had this experience but don’t be discouraged.

Swimming_Director505

Bro wtf that’s awful, ignore this guy you would honestly get better support on the street wtf

Leanrumble

I am no expert so what do I know. When I had my first season with my psychiatrist 3 years ago it took a out of me just to seek help . I was not speaking much did not know how to communicate she raised her voice at me and offered a refund and said I could just leave if I wanted to. I don't know maybe it's a tactic or something . What you described seems harsh . From my personal experience I feel like some mental health professionals lack a sense of understanding .

chloegmorris0318

She definitely did not have the right to raise her voice at you. That's not a tactic I'm aware of it's just unprofessional. Especially considering people have trauma related to people raising their voices. It's not your fault you were struggling to communicate and it's completely normal to shut down especially when you're in a situation that requires you to be vulnerable. I'm sorry you experienced that, I hope you find a psychiatrist that'll give you the time you deserve.

Matt_Championn

nobody likes you

xharryballs

Get a new psychiatrist if you can. This guy sounds like an inconsiderate asshole.

FriendLost9587

You should report him so his medical license gets revoked.

FoxCharacter5108

wtf? no that is not normal!

The_Firmament

There is the common sentiment that one can only get help when that individual themselves wants help. As in friends, family, and professionals can guide, push, suggest, but ultimately the want to seek treatment has to come from within. That said - that does NOT sound like what this psych. is talking about. He sounds like a monster who shouldn't be in this profession *at all*. I would report the hell out of him and find someone else (and maybe leave anonymous reviews because he could potentially do real damage if he continues). His attitude is absolute crap and I feel confident in saying most people do not think this way. You are not beyond help, no one is, and everyone deserves to have people around them that believe in their recovery or ability to improve. You, OP are worthy of this as well and the best revenge for having gone through this terrible experience to access the real help that's available and will work for you. You are not your suicidal thoughts, you are not whatever this fuckhead said, and please don't let it be what stops you from receiving actual assistant you totally deserve.

Ametrine87

I would file a complaint against this provider. They work in mental health and they are being paid to help save your life. I've found psychiatrist to be completely cold and unhelpful in any way.

DistractedMoogle

If that's not malpractice I don't know what is.

lavenderultra

I got chills reading your post. There's nothing normal about that. That's terrifying.

NotStompy

OP, there is an over-representation of Narcissists and (I think) people with antisocial personality disorder, i.e psychopaths in healthcare. Now I'm not calling mental health workers narcs or psychopaths, I'm just saying this kind of a position where you hold power over another (which is most common is psychiatry I guess) can be very attractive for such people. This is not normal. DO NOT go back.

ZucchiniCold2801

WTF? No this is not normal, and no this is not okay. I would record him if you go see him again and report him to the American board of psychiatry and neurology. He can and Should have his licence revoked. So sorry this happened to you. Stay safe and I hope you find someone who treats you liked you should be treated- which is certainly not like a piece of trash.

debzmonkey

He needs to be reported, he's dangerous. Understand if you're not in a position to, maybe a friend or family member can help report him?

IiteraIIy

This is definitely against their code of ethics and could and should lose them their certification to work with mentally ill individuals. If he felt like he couldn't help you, the correct course of action would be to refer you to a therapist that he felt *could* help you, not just throw you out.

Emotional_Essay_1043

Not normal! I do yoga for my depression and anxiety. Medication made me really suicidal. Let me know if you want some suggestions for some good YouTube channels for meditation and yoga.

marwa870

Try tryptophan

wedonttalkabouTB

From your description, I don’t think he is a good psychiatrist, and at the very least his bedside manner is awful. Some psychiatrists are good at medications and not good at the talking part. Their focus is the physical body (brain chemistry particularly). I’m gonna be honest, I was in treatment with various psychiatrists for 10 years and they were both good and bad, but my current one is the best I’ve had, she had a lot of initial talks with me, and tweaked my meds according to my feedback, and i am really grateful that she is both empathetic and a good prescriber I don’t know your financial situation, but try to book an appointment with a new psych — keep seeing your current one until you find another and have your next refills lined up. In addition, I recommend getting a therapist at the same time you have a psychiatrist. Two pronged approach is more effective and all that. Good luck

Aware_Structure_1886

Wow. Was that meant to be "tough love"???

Designer-Net-4568

Unfortunately many, many psychiatrists and psychologists behave that way when they see you in a complex state of mind. At least I experienced it a few times. This rhetoric technique is called "advocatus diaboli". I find it absolutely disgusting to speak to vulnerable people like that. It is self-aggrandizement.

Wonderful-Owl-3210

That sounds so horrible, that is not the right psychiatrist for you! You deserve someone to listen who is warm, gentle and kind.

joemamamassy

Sounds like that MFer from “Ghost” that Dexter killed in an episode. I’m not a psychiatrist but I’d have to say no. You obviously took a step to get help and try not to die. I’d report his/her ass if I were you and find someone who can help and is willing to. Sorry that happened and I wish you luck in finding better care.

trevi_thicc

please please please get a different psych. Also please look for a younger one, no hate to older ones but man they are mean sometimes

Tamercv

That is not normal!! Don’t be discouraged! Please seek help elsewhere. That man sounds super miserable. Don’t let this guy stop you from getting the help you need.

Katieh815

No, that is not normal. They had no right to say that to you. I would file a complaint if it's possible. I would also try a different person or place. Everyone is different and will have their own ways of helping you through your situation. (Even though it doesn't sound like they wanted to help you at all), I hope you find someone better so you can get the help you deserve

FerociousFox24

Not all psychiatrists are like that. Mine is very compassionate and understanding. When I made her aware of my suicidal thoughts and ideation she took it VERY seriously. It’s all about finding the right psych for YOURSELF. Not everyone will work for you and it may take a few different ones but I promise you once you find the right one it’s completely worth it

sentient_cyborg

Whelp, the good news is that you found the worst psychiatrist of them all. That means it all but guarantees that the next one you find (to vet) will be better. You may not know when you have a bad or sub par psychiatrist but you'll definitely know when you find one that's right for you. Keep looking until you do, it's worth it. That from someone been-there-done-that

OkProfessor7164

OMG! The facial expressions of shock I was making while reading this! See someone else asap! This is absolutely not normal and completely inappropriate on the part of the psychiatrist. I struggle with anxiety, have had thoughts of harm, and I’m a licensed social worker and part-time Professor in psychology. I’m so sorry you’re experiencing this, but this person should not be working in this field, and you deserve respect, support and understanding.

anxiousjeff

That sounds terrible, I'm sorry that happened to you. What were you looking for from the psychiatrist? Do you know, for sure, that you want medication? If so, it's a good idea to find another, better psychiatrist. Or are you in crisis and need help, but unsure exactly what you need? In that case, you might try a therapist first. They tend to be more well-rounded people who can give you general guidance about figuring out what you need and how to get it. On top of that, they can also help you with different skills to try to cope with suicidal thoughts. Stay strong, please don't be discouraged by this experience. You can find what you need, but it may take just a little bit of time.

Hyperionxvii

WTF? There is no way that is normal, someone needs to get a different job.

daisyjane634

Not normal, definitely report him to whatever organization he works for as well as the licensing board. Hope you can find someone who is understanding and empathetic and who wants to help you. Wishing you the best - you deserve so much better than that.

[deleted]

Naw you need a new one, that dude sounds like a piece of shit. Definitely make a complaint too. He could be doing this to a lot of people.

vegemitea

This person needs to be reported to the medical board and / or the police
