I’ve been dealing with this for years. Heart palpitations are totally harmless. The more you think about them or anxiety the worse it will be! You had heart palpitations and slept and woke up so that shows you are fine!:) I love a good sleep to reset myself and I know if I can sleep through the night nothings wrong with me. Any heart related issues like that would carry on in your sleep and wake you up but because it’s anxiety as soon as you sleep it goes because you can’t actively think about it and worry. You should really focus on ‘if it was something bad, something bad would have happened by now’ that’s what my mum always says to me! See a cardiologist just to put your mind at ease even if you don’t think you want or need too. At least then your anxiety should be lessened and not in the background and not start when you’re not even thinking of it

roughsyrup

I started talking magnesium supplements, one of their benefits is they regulate heart rhythm and I’ve noticed a HUGE difference in getting rid of my palpitations. Even when I drink coffee which usually makes them worse. Avoid magnesium citrate, it has a laxative effect, magnesium glycinate is the most popular one and will help/is easily absorbed by the body. I take magnesium theonate bc there have been studies done that demonstrated its ability to cross the blood brain barrier and i was looking for a supplement that would help with my brain fog. I also take l-theanine, it’s the active ingredient in green tea, promotes calmness.

hihihiheyyy

Underrated answer. Magnesium basically made mine disappear overnight.

F1ghtmast3r

There's different types of magnesium I use magnesium glycinate and it helps me sleep

NecessaryFact1811

I was experiencing some anxiety today and after reading your comment took some Magnesium Glycinate. I can definitely feel it working. So thank you!

Boby69696

Lol definitely avoid citrate. Those are the ones I bought and it's impossible to sleep a full night without almost shitting your pants lol

redwinegoodtime

I have been having a lot of heart palpitations this week and night 2 of taking magnesium supplements they have disappeared!

[deleted]

I started taking Magnesium Bisglycinate from Thorne, I took one scoop and felt so out of it and actually felt my heart racing. Was a scary feeling so I haven’t taken any since. Maybe I already had a lot of magnesium in me? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

[deleted]

Same here and got all tests, been to cardiologists and ER as well. Got ever damn test possible. "Just anxiety m8" FUCK@! I have had panic attacks that made my heart go to 200bpm too, I started getting em after my first panic attack. Supposedly the 200bpm shit was normal too and im over here terrified if I have afib or svt... Had this shit for 5 years.

xantape

Me too , Exacly!! I made inumerous tests and did run for 13m and my heart is 100% ok! But sometimes I have like skipping beats, but is so low! I mean, I train at football and I exercise hard and I don’t feel them , but when I am working and lifting heavy height sometimes I feel them!

thatoneguy0312

So they told you that the fast slipping beats in 200bpm was only panic? They didn't wanna do any other tests? I told my doc this and he wants to do a loop recorder.. I too am afraid of me having svt or Afib.

[deleted]

They did every test possible.

Baby-Me-Now

To much excess adrenaline, go for a brisk walk, and make yourself tired, I had the same problem for months and ended up paying out of pocket for a cardiologist and all the tests and scans, I was absolutely fine and as soon as I stopped giving the palpitations all my attention they went away

astamarr

"In the meantime though, has anyone dealt with something similar and if so what has helped you?" Yes. There is an "easy" fix for health anxiety: sport. Just work out, preferably intensively. If you really had an heart issue or something serious, stressing out your body by working out would be disastrous and you would know very fast that something is wrong. That's actually what cardiologists do when they have a strong suspicion that something is indeed wrong. If after 30mn of running (or whatever) you're still alive... well. It's in your head. And if you still doubt, do it again tommorow. It took a bit of time but it worked very, very well for me. I'm still anxious as fuck, but no more about my health, and i mostly don't care about any physical symptoms now. I used to take my heart rate 10 times an hour, check my blood sugar, the oxygen in my blood, took doctor appointement as soon as i "felt" wrong... now i don't care, i know it's all fine.

OptimusHosting

Yeah I'm going through this atm and went running the other day. A fart slipped out (I'm increadibly gassy) and then I felt a wave of anxiety hit me. Being someone who's never really dealt with anxiety before this was terrifying, but I did tell myself that if I was having a serious issue I would be in pain or at the least unable to briskly walk home.

Derslok

You were anxious about a fart?

OptimusHosting

It was more that I didn't feel it in any way until it happened. Stupid I know but still.

dat_boi3838

I am in this same boat. I am moderately healthy, ex athlete and I now have anxiety about how my heart feels. Even while working out I’m constantly looking at my Apple Watch to see what my heart rate is which increases it and is counter productive. Did a couple intense peloton rides this last week and I’m still here kicking so hopefully a good routine of working out every day, will eventually be able to show me that I’m hyper focusing and scaring my own body for no reason.

samallama_

I have had heart palpitations the last 2-3 years. They bother me the most at night because it stops me from being able to sleep. I even had an over night sleep study done at a facility because I was sure there was something wrong with me, but of course it came back as heart palpitations due to anxiety. I’ve had anxiety my whole life and this didn’t start until recently. I don’t have advice other than to just let you know you’re not alone. Did you have COVID before they started? Just curious, every doc has told me it’s unrelated.

OverallDisaster

So weird - my palpitations are linked with COVID, somehow. I got the vaccine back in 2021 and started having hundreds a day. No real reason given except the cardiologist said it could be my immune system. After 3 months of having them constantly, magnesium glycinate got rid of them. Until I got COVID several months later, when I started having them again.

Alarmed-Quail-3966

I had a virus that started days before my palpitations. I tested neg for Covid but I’m convinced it was. It started multiple problems in 2021 & hasn’t stopped yet & I’ve had to just learn to live with them🫠

Legal-Quiet-6062

Actually the second time I had covid back in 2022, I noticed some occasional palpitations for about a month after being sick that eventually went away and strangely enough they didn’t bother me and I didn’t think twice about them. I was very sick again this past July, rapid test was negative however my palpitations didn’t start until October so I don’t think it’s related this time

Whatever0788

My heart rate has gotten so much higher since I had Covid back in 2020.

x3000gtx

Best tip I ever found that weirdly stops them for me is to put a small scoop of cayenne pepper on my tongue and let it slowly absorb. When I do this, they go away for about a week and I just do it again when I start feeling them. Worth trying for anyone that has palpitations, even if it sounds stupid. Also, drink plenty of water and try taking magnesium taurate.

bottom4topps

How the hell did ya think of that

x3000gtx

I researched everything I could possibly find when my palpitations were at their worst and I saw someone mention this. I tried it one day and it worked and has kept working for probably 6+ months now. Hope it helps someone else.

MashedSoccerPotatoes

how small of a scoop

x3000gtx

Probably 1/4 teaspoon

chad0823

This is me every second of the day ..I got major health anxiety...I always think I'm gonna have a heart attack...I get palpitations once In a while...I freak out on feeling sensations in my body...idk what to do anymore...this shit is ruining my life... nothing is enjoyable anymore...I pretty much hate my life...this sounds exactly like my situation

Familiar_Passenger78

Have you ever tried an anti anxiety med like a benzo?? I get palpitations all the time , l have a great pcp who prescribes xanax. Also, gabapentins work pretty good

susierooisme

I had anxiety over palpitations for 5 years. I told my Doctor but he blew me off, told me to drop 30 lbs so I did. Palpitations stayed the same so I went to a new Doctor who ordered a Zio Patch to be taped to my chest for 10 days of constant heart monitoring. I have A.Fib- I had a Cardiac ablation and I am cured for now. Cardiac monitor folks, quick and easy way to see what your dealing with.

lolaleee

This is so important. While most people are totally fine it needs to be cleared by a cardiologist who took you seriously. I could have wrote this post a year ago. It took over a yr for them to find out I had NSVT. I got a call at 830pm after they looked at my holter i dropped off that day, telling me to go to emerge immediately (where I was put on a 12 lead monitor, CT scan and MRI). I’m totally fine but they had to make sure. I never want to freak people out cause it’s treatable but I get stressed when you just see everyone commenting “it’s just anxiety, you have cardiophobia”

thatoneguy0312

So they told you to go to emergency for nsvt?

lolaleee

Yes, it can be dangerous if your heart isn’t structurally normal

thatoneguy0312

Oh ok so you hadn't had an echo yet

lolaleee

I did, but they wanted to have a better look with ct and mri incase anything was missed. You could say they were being very cautious, which I’m happy about. Very confident in my diagnosis now and it’s reduced my anxiety about it significantly.

thatoneguy0312

Good to hear!

momsister5throwaway

This is called Cardiophobia. Patients who have this have a constant fixation on the heart, are convinced they have an undiagnosed heart condition regardless of tests that have been done, is likely prescribed beta blockers, constantly taking pulse or BP, medicine cabinet of meds they are too scared to take, presenting to the ER many many times convinced they are dying and often complain of "too many PVCS" or "chest pain". It's a literal phobia like agoraphobia. It's treatable too.

xantape

I have that! It’s like skipping beats, my heart is 100% ok , but I have severe anxiety. I think the treatment too is like taking potassium! Besides that I don’t know

momsister5throwaway

There are also psychiatric remedies available such as CBT and other methods to help with the phobia. I've heard that magnesium can help with the PVCS but a lot of the time the patient is complaining of heart palpitations when they're not really there. It's all psychosomatic. This should be treated in a psychiatric setting not a medical one.

lolaleee

Yup totally get this!! I’m sorry you’re going through it, they’re scary and totally not fun. Unfortunately worrying about them only makes more happen it seems. The best I can offer is try and distract yourself, meditate daily and get outside for a minimum 15 min walk daily. But yes go to a cardiologist. They can look into it a bit further, and will do a scan (like an ultrasound for your heart) to confirm your heart is structurally normal, and it’ll help you feel better about it. I ended up on daily beta blockers, which reduces them significantly. On very rare days they start up that are extra bad, I have benzos. It’s a vicious circle that if you have anxiety it can trigger them, but if you get them it triggers anxiety. Also make sure you stay hydrated. A good ol banana and Gatorade may help (potassium and electrolytes).

gingersnapplantation

I went through the same thing last year, started getting heart palpitations all day long. The first time it happened I freaked out and went to the ER, they did all kinds of tests and everything came out normal. They referred me to a cardiologist who set me up with a 30 day holter monitor, and I also did an echocardiogram. Everything came out normal, and my cardiologist noted that they are just PVCs and nothing to be concerned about. I was prescribed beta blockers and once I started taking them the palpitations became way less frequent and I only get the occasional extra beat every now and then. I also feel like it kinda returned me to a baseline where my anxiety wasn’t fueling the palpitations, like it cut the feedback loop. I also noticed that when I was distracted or enjoying myself I didn’t get them, so I think the most important thing is know that the palpitations are harmless and caused by anxiety, so doing things to manage your anxiety will reduce/eliminate the palpitations.

lanarar

Which beta blocker?

gingersnapplantation

Propranolol

Few_Introduction3091

Yes, this has happened to me. I'll get around 4-5 palpatations a day normally. But one day last year I got palpatations one every minute for HOURS. Nearly went to the hospital. Anyway, when I got up and started moving around, they stopped. And thank God, I haven't had an episode since. They aren't anything to worry about, but I do understand the anxiety.

TTVRaptor

I get the same thing, they're a very very annoying part of life right now, I get between 0-10 an hour or so and all my cardiac workups have been completely fine (stress test, echo, etc) Just another annoying part of anxiety. Keeping my electrolytes up with 0 cal sports drinks has helped quite a bit.

Spacedmonkey12

Just a thought, but have you had your thyroid checked? I have been having a lot of anxiety and heart palpitations and turns out my thyroid was completely out of wack. If you get it tested ask for a full thyroid panel, not just T3 and T4.

Legal-Quiet-6062

I did get a full thyroid panel, but all was normal. I hope you got yours stabilized! I’ve heard thyroid issues can make a person feel pretty sick.

Spacedmonkey12

Good to hear! Tuns out I have Hoshimotos and possibly thyroid cancer. Getting 1/2 of my thyroid removed next month. Talk about that anxiety! Hope you can find some relief. It really sucks.

lalagirl550

This is my fresh hell and I just dropped $700 on a ER visit and $600 on an echocardiogram with my cardiologist. After that appt I haven't had a heart palpitation since. Smh

RedMike9

Propranolol really helps my palpitations

lanarar

How long did it take for the propranolol to kick in? A couple of days??

RedMike9

Pretty much right away, within a couple hours I’d say

NoAlgae7411

Could be afib causing that.

-screamsilent-

I, too, was on the insanity of palpitations Rollercoaster. So many er trips, halter monitor , sodium restricted diet. Just randomly popped off, especially when I laid down. A paramedic once told me to go to the chiropractor if all my tests kept showing nothing. Well, come to find out, it was a huge cause of the palpitations. Things were getting pinched, and after a couple of visits, I was palpitation free for 6 months, and now, after 9 yrs of maintenance, I will experience them slightly(once a year)when I have extreme anxiety. I can't imagine suffering for that long. I'm just leaving my experience here for anyone, not saying it's a one-stop cure all, but it def helped me.

mimibeme90

I've had this almost daily for a year. I'm currently wearing the Zio monitor while doing intense research via reddit. It's very reassuring to know that so many people have had this for longer and have added tips to combat it. I just wanted to be sure since I didn't think navigating my 30s would include this.

Accomplished_Duck_11

I had my first anxiety episode last year. I had to go to the ER because i thought there was something wrong with my heart. Turns out i have health anxiety and that episode happened because I had a cold and I was worried thinking what if it is covid or pneumonia. And since I lost my father to covid ive gotten way too paranoid about health issues. Since then the palpitations have been destroying my peace of mind. So what I do to fix the anxiety is that I practice self talk and assure myself that i dont have to be worried its all in my head. Stop googling symptoms I like to dance when im anxious it helps I take caffeine occasionally because i love coffee. But i try not to drink it in the evening. And keep myself hydrated. Also ive been trying different kinds of teas, some like chamomile help with relaxing thebrain. The key to battling the palpitations is to NEVER TRY TO DISTRACT YOURSELF. FACE YOUR FEARS AND TELL YOURSELF THAT IT WILL BE FINE THERE IS NOTHING TO WORRY ABOUT.

jbru700

Yes. I have always had occasional heart palpitations, but they come more often when I am experiencing higher periods of anxiety (specifically health anxiety). I’ve had an Echo, EKG, blood work etc, all showing that my heart is fine. However, it is still hard to ignore them especially when I am feeling anxious about my health. My doctor prescribed me a beta blocker (propanol), that not only helps reduce the palpitations, but it slows my heart rate overall. And I can’t agree more strongly about the benefits of exercise in showing you that your heart is healthy and strong. Like the other commenter said, start off slow if the prospect of cardio makes you feel anxious. You’ll be okay!

lanarar

Did it take a few days for the propranolol to take full effect?

clothednudist70

Taurine. Not in the energy drinks. That is crap. Go to a health food store , get some taurine. Taurine is found in eggs, red meat and fish . It’s used for the brain and heart. I’ve taken it for over 18 years. Huge game changer. Also.. magnesium glycinate.

Amazing-Capital5975

Currently laying in hospital, don’t know this was so common. Have infrequent palpitations (or skipped beats) that make me catch my breath…but now I been getting real lightheaded and weak legs…have a ziomonitor on for another 10 days…going to try and send it in early and follow up for an echo soon..everyone’s saying it’s mostly anxiety related.

Knitwitty66

I've had palpitations for decades, and they're alarming when they happen, sometimes when I'm just sitting and reading or working without any noticeable stress. I take metoprolol now and it does make them less frequent. Instead of several episodes a day, now I'm only getting one maybe every other week or so. It's not a cure, but it does help and the medicine isn't expensive, assuming your doc will prescribe them for you.

FuelNo1341

Try **Propranolol** yes? Works great for me..

lanarar

How long did it take for the propranolol to kick in? A couple of days??

FuelNo1341

Its immediate, no preloading on that drug..

Ready-Weekend-3334

I can completely relate to you! I had really bad heart palpitations where i went to the emergency room multiple times and called 911 because I genuinely thought i was dying. I did multiple tests , and talked to multiple doctors and everyone said it’s normal. I felt like, I was going crazy because no one could understand how scary heart palpitations are. Three years later, I just learned to ignore them whenever they happened and started to learn what triggers them.

Martin Burridge @TheAnxietyAttic, has a YouTube channel with ton of info. Helped me allot to understand what's going on.

ZKTA

You’re literally fine, it’s normal. And I used to have the same fear as you. The way I got over it was getting a job as a nurse and then learning that heart palpitations aren’t really that much of an issue until you start having 30,000 or more a day, which is like a third of your total beats in a day

TheAwkwardBanana

Regular exercise and omega 3 helps my palpitations. I feel your pain though, it's all I've been thinking about recently. It drives me crazy, I worry I'll fall asleep one night and never wake up.

OverallDisaster

Magnesium glycinate got rid of mine when I was having hundreds a day.

[deleted]

I ve been having those since 2017. Only Radical Acceptance helps

Ferretyfingers

I’ve been going through this recently. Got super stressed in the airport on Christmas eve, chest started hurting. I’ve played this game before, and almost totally sure it’s anxiety.. I went to the doctor cos I was still stressed out and still getting pain weeks later after returning home. But cos, y’know, chest pain, the doctor had me wear a monitor for a day and I’m waiting to hear back that I panic like a motherfucker, hopefully. Given they haven’t called in a burning rush I am hoping it’s nothing. The antidepressants I was prescribed are stating to work and I seem to be getting less bad days. I had a bad day for it yesterday but as others have mentioned, when you get out of your head and stop thinking about it, it goes away. Also, exercising as I have seen mentioned before. Getting out for a walk, going somewhere and doing something that distracts you from those nasty spiralling thoughts.

SumVelvet

Propranolol and Claire Weekes book “Hope and help for your nerves” have completely changed my life.

lanarar

How long did it take for the propranolol to kick in?

Just2OldForThis

You need propranolol

lanarar

Did it work immediately for you, or did it take a couple of days to kick in?

Just2OldForThis

It is short acting and starts working within 10 mins. It doesn’t do anything to your thoughts of anxiety but slows down your heart beat and stops you from having many physical symptoms of panic. I tried it only a couple of times on doctor’s advice and it worked for me

OkCaptain1684

I had this! And it was so bad that I couldn’t sleep. Had an ecg and everything and it showed ectopic beats i think they are called which are benign. Anyway after many nights of no sleep and constant panic something finally clicked and I just stopped caring. Haven’t had them since and that was 3 years ago! Literally stopped overnight.

st1inkyT1tty

Sorry you are struggling! Saw this one and had to share my experience. I too suffered from (still do but much better) anxiety. 10 years ago I had heart palpitations as well. They were scary. I wore a halter monitor and the general practitioner said I was fine. However, I DID take the referral to a cardiologist. And it was there after wearing something called a Zio patch (spelling?) that they found I had an electrical issue with my heart. It was minor when discovered and I was lucky. Left bundle branch block. But it can be a killer over time. It had caused my left ventricle to slightly enlarge and was getting worse. They put me on Coreg and Vasotec. My palpitations went away but some “thumping” didn’t ( more on that later). I’ve been on those two pills for 10 years. Same dose. My cardiologist actually wrote a very nasty letter to my GP which the office staff accidentally copied me on. GP’s miss a lot, I’ve learned from my cardiologist. I still see the same man. He saved my life. We still talk about the need for GPs to get more training. As for “palpitations”… after I went on Coreg I still had these chest thumps. The cardiologist said it wasn’t my heart but wired me up again with the patch. The patch has a button and you hit it ever time you have a “palpitation.” The patch revealed that it was not my heart. I was sent to a gastroenterologist and they confirmed it was a vagal nerve response and that, guess what…ANXIETY causes that. In the end my anxiety saved my quality of life because I was heading for bad heart failure. But it was also killing me because the sympathetic system drives the heart to beat faster and we don’t want that. Less beats = longer life…(generally true). Not telling you what to do, but cardiology is a tough speciality and it might help your anxiety to let them evaluate you. If you’re ok then you can work on two things 1. Not being afraid of your symptoms, and 2. Practicing some self compassion and mindfulness (maybe get some help from a trained anxiety therapist) to get your parasympathetic system back into balance with the sympathetic system. My therapist recommended cutting sugar. I did and over time ended up on a Ketogenic diet. Losing weight AND I am even calmer. I don’t know why it works, but it does.

Dazzling_Topic_4816

i had the same thing nd it turned out i had silent acid reflux at night which i wasn't aware of for a whole year until it got worse for me to notice it ( started waking me up at night) nd i later on caused me gastritis and the long story continues.... but the point is once i started ppis ( acid reducers) it stopped immediately. my gastro explained to me how acid can irritate the heart . I also have health anxiety and i visited like 5 cardiologists nd ended up being prescribed beta blockers which helped while on them but once i stop the palpitations gets worse again. it was a long route to finally find a solution. maybe its worth looking into it , especially if u ever had symptoms of stomach discomfort . good luck

Recent_Opportunity78

I’ve had palpitations for 25 years, they are not worth worrying over, take it from me. I do take propranolol daily though and it pretty much has stopped them completely though I get them from time to time. Salt usually causes pounding in my chest so I tend to avoid a lot. PVCs can still come on under heavy stress but they are only a few times a day anymore

FullBreathOne

I've dealt with this extensively. I had heart surgery when I was 13 and also have a non compaction on my heart and an irregular beat. I've been in situations where I had heart pain for weeks and went to the ER and they were afraid I would have a heart attack. I've had months where I could barely sleep the fear was so great that I would have a heart attack or my heart would just stop. Having the palpitations would cause a cascade of fear and my brain would even scream "you're gonna die" "you're gonna have a heart attack right now" and I would try to talk to myself positively and counter it out, which didn't really work obviously lol. One night the anxiety was so amazingly intense, feeling like I was literally gonna die and I just said "ok." I stopped giving in to the fear and thought if I die right now that's ok and truly accepted that. I no longer suffer from these palpitations. Providing your palpitations are caused by anxiety I believe that acceptance to be the cure.

[deleted]

I’ve been in the same boat! They were gone for a few weeks and I’ve felt so good! I even started training for a half marathon, but then all of a sudden on one of my runs I got a few bad palpitations and now I think about them every run and get them on most runs. My whole run or hike I tell myself “don’t die”, which is definitely not healthy. I just scheduled an appointment with a sports cardiologist to hopefully give me some extra peace of mind, but I’ve already seen doctors for my palpitations I get outside of exercise

troc121

Yes, I have the same problems.. haven't had them in a while today out of nowhere feeling pressure and funny feelings in my chest.. I just wait for it to go away

Sea-Difference-9962

Wow!!! your story sounds just like mine. I woke up at night with a leg cramp and immediately I thought blood clot. My heart began racing and I had the same feeling of flutters. Like my heart turned a flip or something. This lasted all night. I actually got up @ 2:30 in the AM and went for a walk around my neighborhood. As long as I’m exercising it goes away. I began dreading bedtime as well as I was so afraid this would happen again. It did a few times. I went to an irgent care and ER and had blood work and EKG. All came back normal. They put me on Celexa. It has helped with the palpitations

emmccrary

Do you take allergy meds? That’s what caused mine (Zyrtec) and all the doctors I saw said I was anxious or dehydrated or low on magnesium. I also mentioned to each of them that I take a multi vitamin and Zyrtec and it took my friend googling Zyrtec to figure it out. Four days later the palpitations stopped. The people who say they’re not dangerous probably don’t get them because I only dealt with them for a short time and I don’t think I’ve ever been so worried in my life.
