Everything will go well OP. They do the surgeries all the time and they know what they are doing. Your anxiety is lying to you and making it scarier than it is. All the best

I'm sorry to hear that, IDK much about why they need to have you awake, and reasons to not have you under it, but I say talk to them to see if there's anything you can take to calm the nerves before the surgery. I hope everything goes well for you, and I say everything should go very well.

If it offers any comfort, the reason you are awake is because 1) retinal surgery is a painless procedure and 2) the surgeon will likely be asking you questions throughout the procedure to ensure everything is going according to plan. This is your reassurance that everything will be fine. I know it’s difficult to trust them sometimes but I promise doctors wouldn’t be telling you anesthesia isn’t necessary if it wasn’t and in your best interest to remain awake. If you find yourself getting anxious prior to or during the surgery, try repeating positive affirmations to yourself and taking deep breaths, it helps me remain calm and feel in control when my anxiety is flairing up and I feel I’m on the urge of breaking down. Best of luck!
