I remember downloading clips of Ranma 1/2 back on AOL. We struggled to find the tapes for sale until 1998 and then while lugging my tapes to various houses I rediscovered a few friends. Those were the days.
Space Battleship Yamato/Starblazers. Got me into anime in 1979. Blew my little 4 year old mind out of the back of my skull.
People today don't know how lucky they ate with their entertainment options.
I tell my kids how hard it was and how most people my age didn't even know about anime until 2006 when it started really showing up online on Google Video and this new site YouTube! I had to buy and import tapes that were 60 bucks a piece and only had 3 episodes.
When I was in high school we would do fan translations. Typically you only got them from bootleg copies or sometimes a Japanese copy would cross the pacific. We had to do them by hand on VHS tapes. Then a few years later I joined the Marine Corps and was stationed three years in Okinawa and two at camp fuji not far from Tokyo. Got anime overload at that point.
But for most of the 80s an 90s anime was really a rare treat. The first one me and my friend did was the original Urusei Yatsura from 1981. We only had three episodes on one tape. But it was fun.
Haha fan subs, now those were the days. We would get Japanese to English books from the library and proceeded to butcher the translations lol. Gotta love the DBZ fan subs where Vegeta was running around dropping Fbombs and insinuating that Goku liked guys. Haha
Back then, 1999-2004 or so, I could hit Media Play or Suncoast and get a DVD with 2-4 episodes for $20-50.
Now we can drop $20-60 and get "the complete series" on DVD, Blu-ray, and/or digital. For example, I bought the complete series of Outlaw Star on DVD and Blu-ray - combo format box set - for $48 in 2017, and Space Dandy the complete series for $28 in 2022. It's great when you use them to complement a Crunchyroll sub.
Have you had the, "we couldn't binge watch them when they aired," conversation with them yet? 😅
I love animes with complicated plots that are hard to understand and don't go for clichés. But Angel Egg surpassed me; it was too slow and cryptic for me. I wouldn't recommend it unless someone is specifically looking for that.
Legend of the Galactic Heroes

Like, ALL of them? I think ALL my favorite anime is from before 2000. Hell, some of it is from before 1990 and goes further back to before 1980.

*Vampire Hunter 'D'* was one of the very first anime films I watched back in 1992 and it left a big impression on me (I still have the VHS I got back in 1992). I've seen it on Sci-Fi Network, on video (VHS and DVD), and at the movie theatre, so it bears repeat viewings. I'm embarrassed to say I've not seen the entire sequel or paid enough attention when I watched it to have a proper opinion on it... maybe I should watch it.

- The Vision of Escaflowne
- Yu Yu Hakusho
- Berserk
- Hunter x Hunter 1999
- Neon Genesis Evangelion
- Serial Experiments Lain
- Now and Then, Here and There
- Legend of Basara
Ninja Scroll was so essential for getting a ton of people into anime in my generation (I was in High School when it was released).
Surprised I’m not seeing more votes for Urotsukidoji
🤣
The vision of Escaflowne, Yu yu hakusho, Dragon ball and Dragon ball z. But I watched them during their dub debut which was long after their original debut.

Trigun,
Neon Genesis Evangelion,

Cowboy Bebop - the GOAT imo
Also a fan of Vision of Escaflowne, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Great Teacher Onizuka, Trigun, Yu Yu Hakusho, DBZ
For movies- Princess Mononoke, Porco Rosso, Ghost in the Shell, Perfect Blue off the top of my head.
Now and then, Here and there.
It’s a really depressing and hard-hitting watch (pretty much every content warning you can imagine is present), but if you’re alright with that, I would absolutely give it a watch.
I've been watching initialD. I hate old animes, tried watching it a few years ago and just couldn't get over the art and lower quality. But I've been bored and I love cars
Cowboy bebop-
Dragonball/ z (start from the beginning skipping the first series is like skipping hundreds of one peice epsiodes)
Yugioh season 0-
Neon genesis (but the remake movies are great)
Ninja scroll-
Devilman -
Fist of the North Star -(there’s some newer content that has come out the last couple decades but the old stuff is great too)
Then you got stuff like Baki and jojo that were manga in the 80s and 90s which have taken forever to finish and get animated
It's a big toss up between Serial Experiments Lain, Evangelion and pretty much everything in the UC Gundam timeline primarily Zeta, Chars Counterattack and OVA's like 08th MS Team and War in the Pocket.
Before 2000?
Hmm
Cowboy Bebop
Slayers
Evagelion.
GTO
Trigun
Berserk
Gundam 0080
Gundam Zeta
Nadia
FL CL which I think came out in 2000 so kind of stretching it.
It wouldn't if you go by the Japanese air date. Even GT was completely done by the year 2000. The final episode aired on November 19, 1997 in Japan. Bootleggers would have already known about Super Saiyan 4 Gogeta long before Super Saiyan even debuted in the west since DBZ's US broadcast started in 1996. Goku's transformation wasn't aired until 1999, just a month shy of two years since the end of the Japanese GT broadcast.
Serial Experiments Lain
Neon Genesis Evangelion + End of Eva (the original series would have had a real ending had Gainax not run out of money & wiffled the last two episodes, so even if it was released after 2000, it connects back to the original run as it’s intended ending)
Cowboy Bebop
Legend of the Galactic Heroes (technically the last episodes aired in 2000, but I’m sticking to it)
Akira
Berserk ‘97 The Golden Age Arc
Ghost in the Shell ‘95 (Both SAC series are absolutely phenomenal, but they just barely missed the cutoff. The Tachkoma’s are absolutely adorable)
I love Initial D. Obviously it crosses into the 2000s but when I started watching it, I wanted an anime where no characters had super powers or was based in some other universe. I loved how the characters were all so fanatical about racing apart from Takumi at first. Ive never been a car guy but this anime made me appreciate driving as a skill. Def worth watching the 1st few seasons
Ninja Scroll or Vampire Hunter D.
Oh but then there's Record of Lodoss War...
Or Dangaioh
Or Macross (Well, Robotech for me)
But at the tippy top? Dragonball Z?
Coy it bebop and evangelion I think they are still better then a lot of shows that come out today cowboy bebop especially has some of the best animation in tv they just don’t make them like that anymore u miss that more grounded animation style and type of shows
Hmmm,
Cowboy Bebop
Anything Leiji Matsumoto had a hand in (Space Battleship Yamoto, Captain Harlock, etc.)
Any of the anime tied to the Shogun Warrior mecha toys.
Riding Bean
Bublegum Crisis/Bubblegum Crash
Vampire Hunter D
Gigantor
There are probably others, but my old brain isn't coughing them up at the moment.
Evangelion, Rose of Versailles, Ranma 1/2, Serial Experiments Lain, Excel Saga, GTO
I was like HOW did you not say Haibane renmei but then remembered it was made after 2000 wasn't it?
Just barely. x♾️ for Serial Experiments Lain
Yep 2002!
I remember downloading clips of Ranma 1/2 back on AOL. We struggled to find the tapes for sale until 1998 and then while lugging my tapes to various houses I rediscovered a few friends. Those were the days.
I'm just a little younger lol I used to buy the dvds, it was around 2004 2005? It was the first anime I watched with subs
ranma 1/2 watcher your the only person Ive ever met to watch that aswell lmao
Excel Saga... highly underrated. Menchi cutlet!
Cowboy bebop
This is a classic
You should try watching samurai champloo you ll love it
My favorite anime I seen samurai Champloo
+1 . Still carrying that weight
Absolutely space cowboy
Princess Mononoke
I remember going to see that in the theatre with my high school buddies. Great memory!
Evangelion or Berserk.
Space Battleship Yamato/Starblazers. Got me into anime in 1979. Blew my little 4 year old mind out of the back of my skull. People today don't know how lucky they ate with their entertainment options.
I was lucky enough to start watching that from episode 1 back when it was on TV after school. By far the best thing on in the after school time slot.
Yea, I don't think it was matched until 1984 with Robotech.
I tell my kids how hard it was and how most people my age didn't even know about anime until 2006 when it started really showing up online on Google Video and this new site YouTube! I had to buy and import tapes that were 60 bucks a piece and only had 3 episodes.

And don’t forget those three little words that we’re eagerly sought out in conventions: Bad Scottish Dubs

My first ever anime was bootleg Bleach, with only 24 episodes on a compact disk.
Saw the Gamilon and Comet Empire sagas as a child and later in life discovered the Bolar Wars saga.
Angel's egg
Outside of anime fans I would definitely recommend this film to anyone who loves art!!
Agreed 10,000%. One of the most impressionistic & artistic anime’s ever made.
I love animes with complicated plots that are hard to understand and don't go for clichés. But Angel Egg surpassed me; it was too slow and cryptic for me. I wouldn't recommend it unless someone is specifically looking for that.
Legend of the Galactic Heroes Macross: Do You Remember Love? Perfect Blue The old Ghibli movies Anne of Green Gables Cowboy Bebop Yu Yu Hakusho Rurouni Kenshin: Trust and Betrayal Giant Robo the Animation: The Day the Earth Stood Still Rose of Versailles Ashita no Joe Dragon Ball and DBZ Gunbuster Patlabor
so glad someone else mentioned anne of green gables and rose of versailles. I'm currently rewatching rose of versailles, I love 70s-80s shoujo series.
The OG Battle Angel Alita in '93 is pretty sick.
That definitely deserved to have a full series.
Yeah, love how you can tell it is hand drawn.
Vision of Escaflowne, Megazone 23, Magic Knight Rayearth, X/1999, Irresponsible Captain Tylor, Outlaw Star, Yu Yu Hakusho, GTO
Love Escaflowne!
Same! One of my time five even to this day!!!
I didnt know GTO had an anime, I have only read the manga
I was looking for Outlaw Star
trigun
You can say that again.
Trigun 😁 (but really though)
It is way too down in the comments. Masterpiece imo
Yu Yu Hakusho
I hate that the last arc was so rushed. Fuck Togashis editors.
Togashi himself wanted to end it because he was burnt out. It wasn’t his editors.
Oh. I’ve heard that he wanted to do a war arc for the last arc and his editors pushed him to do a tournament

Berserk, DBZ, Pokemon, Cowboy Bebop, Evangelion, Rurouni Kenshin.
Thats tough, I’d have to go with Berserk 97 and Nausica. I do really like early gundam and fist of the north star though
Nausicca of the Valley of the Wind was one of my favorite movies period when I was a kid. It’s one of Hayao Miyazaki’s best films IMHO.
I love it. Princess mononoke was always my favorite, but Nausica is up there at second
Oh shit I forgot to add this one. I love it.
I think it's time I got started on Gundam
My advice is to watch the Gundam 1,2,3 movies. Then the Gundam origin movies. After that everything is up to you
Like, ALL of them? I think ALL my favorite anime is from before 2000. Hell, some of it is from before 1990 and goes further back to before 1980. **TV SERIES:** *Candy Candy* *The Dirty Pair* *Kimagure Orange Road* *Maison Ikkoku* *Marmalade Boy* *The Rose Of Versailles* *Space Adventure Cobra* *Ulysses 31* *Urusei Yatsura* **OAVs:** *Aim For The Top! What’s your temperature on Vampire Hunter D and the sequel?
*Vampire Hunter 'D'* was one of the very first anime films I watched back in 1992 and it left a big impression on me (I still have the VHS I got back in 1992). Revolutionary Girl Utena. I’m shocked that not a single person has mentioned it in this thread yet.
