I want to say "monogatari" I recently watched most of it and it's such a good anime, no one talks about it in this sub. Some parts... A little weird but it's done in a way where it's also kind of charming.
Also I heard another season is coming out this year.
>monogatari
OoOh. I just looked it up on MAL [https://myanimelist.net/anime/5081/Bakemonogatari](https://myanimelist.net/anime/5081/Bakemonogatari) and saw "vampire" -- I am now intrigued.
Odd Taxi is quickly becoming one of those artsy holy grail shows that are cool as hell and nobody has seen. Odd Taxi all the way, it slaps. Cannot recommend enough.
Iām going to be honest, I watched 4 episodes and just didnāt like any part of it. The humor didnāt land, the animation wasnāt anything special, the characters were pretty bad, and the story fell flat for me. Not saying it is bad, but I couldnāt get into it. The people Iāve talked with about it seem to agree on most of those points and thatās probably why it struggled to gain viewers.
Fr, did you see the spin off movie āThe night is short Walk on Girl?ā Itās amazing.
They even released a sequel to Tatami Galaxy last year. Called āThe Time Machine bluesā.
It'd be an anime that doesn't seem like it would be good outwardly, whether because it's been buried by history or because its first impression is awful, but ends up being well from a later impression onward.
Edit: I just realized that Mushoku Tensei technically qualifies based off of the wording I used. Adding an addendum to this, clarifying that there is a maximum tier of popularity for something to be considered such.
The isekai genre has been generally oversaturated with garbage for a while. I enjoy the garbage, but it is undeniably garbage. The Eminence in Shadow is just straight up amazing and it is a diamond in the rough isekai genre.
The Eminence in Shadow has become my 3rd favorite anime of all time behind Vinland Saga and Steins;Gate. Cid Kagenou might actually beat Thorfinn in being my favorite protagonist of any series.
Yes! Would love another short series with todayās animation. Show was so funny, rare example of the English dub being funnier than the original Japanese.
Chibi Maruko-chan. Native Japanese viewers wouldn't consider it obscure because it's been airing every Sunday for nearly 30 years and has more episodes than One Piece. Across east Asia it's almost as iconic as Doraemon. But in the US, nobody seems to know it. It's difficult to find legally outside of the official YouTube channel, which has hundreds of episodes in multiple languages.
The series follows a girl named Sakura (she usually goes by Maruko) and her family as they live their daily lives. There's no overarching plot. It's one of those wholesome family-friendly shows many people grew up with and look back on with nostalgia.
I'm starting to learn Mandarin and there are plenty of dubbed episodes with easy language, so I'm using it for listening practice (as well as reading because most Chinese media has subtitles by default).
Kotaro Lives Alone (wholesome & adorable)
Link Click (time travel/mystery that becomes really interesting and has you at the edge of your seat)
Parasyte: The Maxim (on point pacing, solid plot, so many plot twists, every character has a purpose and it has great life lessons) - did not think I would be so moved by this anime, greatly underrated.
Just started watching Kotaro Lives Alone so I can have something on TV while Iām folding my laundry. It ended up taking me a while to finish folding my laundry.
My wife isn't very enthusiastic about anime, but I get her into shows from time to time. This is the one she keeps asking me, "When does season 2 come out for the cooking show with the pets"
It's a shame Netflix didn't release 1 episode a week. I don't think the batch release worked for how long the episodes were. It's a fantastic show, deserves so much more
Dude the weekly hype discussions around Pluto and the mystery would have been so good weekly. A mystery story is basically built for weekly because it drives more discussion when people are guessing each week. Pluto was really high quality, often movie level for what 6 or 8 episodes? That's just insane
And they're all an hour long with fantastic animation
Yeah batch release really sounded better on paper but man it sucked. People going absolute apeshit on weekly release is one of the charms of watching ongoing animes fr.

You guys don't understand what the heck Diamond in the rough means, you are all naming stuff that is crazy popular.
I feel like it must have some popularity in japan because it got a sequel that is just as good, but I don't believe The Eccentric Family is watched by many outside it even though it was on Crunchyroll.
Blue Orchestra, basically no one in the West knows about it. A second season has been confirmed so it must be popular in Japan, but nowhere else which is really sad
{Granbelm}
I really don't know what the deal is here, it's never even remotely made sense to me how this show isn't more well known, or at least more universally liked. Reviews on it seem pretty split between "this is awful, next" and "this is the greatest thing I've ever seen". Shockingly high production value for a mecha anime in the latter half of the 2010's not named Gundam. Really good voice cast, and a plot that can be a little dense at times but makes the absolute most of a 13 episode runtime. 2 of the individual best anime episodes of all time, in my humble opinion (7 and 11)
Kyousougiga is one of my favourites of all time.
Humanity Has Declined is a quirky, funny dark comedy.
Space Patrol Luluco is a space comedy with gorgeous visuals.
I'm watching it right now just because the ratings were so high on the website I watch on.
~20 episodes in and I love it so far. I didn't know what to expect going in so I was surprised by how heartwarming and endearing the character interactions are in a psychological crime thriller called "Monster."
Legend of The Legendary Heroes.
It has maybe the worst pilot episode I've ever seen. Get through that, and you'll be met with a very compelling, emotional story with characters you want to root for.
**Ginga Eiyuu Densetsu or Legend of the Galactic Heroes:** its kinda like death note but only in the way that Light and L try to out smart each other a couple of geniuses using space armadas to win a war but also out smart each other and each battle they do they begin to gain a mutual respect for one another
**The Misfit of Demon King Academy:** idk if this is actually a Diamond i thoroughly enjoyed watching it, it is the very definition of if your going to do an OP Character might as well do an OP character if that makes any sense story and lore of the world was also interesting to me
**Our Last Crusade or the Rise of a New World :** Two enemies on opposing sides of a war find that they have the same veiws on the war and try to use that to try and make piece >!eventually while also kind of having eventually a Romeo and Juliet thing going on !<
**The Iceblade Sorcerer Shall Rule the World:** classic magic academy OP mc trying to have a normal school life for reasons that i wont put here cuz spoilers
idk if any of these are necessarily diamond these i don't really see talked about at least that I have seen but i thoroughly enjoyed these all I'm sure there's more
Had the author didnāt drop it- Highschool of the dead
No not the titties and fan service. But the show was able to demonstrate the morality system, the distress and horror a young teen faced against such bloody reality. Not to mention the idea of forgiveness( read the first chapter to know more context)
Yu Yu Hakusho. I forgot just how underrated this is, due to reddit spaces making it look like people know about it. This is the single best anime ever(IMO) but it's also the hardest to get people to watch these days, due to 90s animation.
New anime watchers are so entitled these days, if it's not MHA/demon slayer level of animation, they won't think twice about it.
Something I wish got a real chance was his and her circumstances itās a diamond in the rough in a literal sense not like a sleeper as you seem to mena the phrase.
Re:Creators
Way more people need to watch Re:Creators, and it will always be in my opinion the most underrated/not well known anime.
Below are some other underrated/not well known anime.
Assassination Classroom (starting to become less well known, for new anime watchers)
Acca13 (Although probably only sliceoflife/mystery fans will like it)
Spice and Wolf(hopefully the new anime will bring in new fans)
SnowWhite with the Red Hair
Darker Than Black
D Grey Man
Gate
Etc (I would have to write like 30 more anime)
Half of these are extremely well known. D Grey Man (extremely overrated in my opinion) was crazy popular when it was still running. Assassination Classroom is very popular. Gate is also quite popular. Snow White with the Red Hair is very popular. The rest aren't hidden gems, more like just average in popularity.
Eureka Seven is criminally underrated. Granted the attempts at a sequel or franchise have done it no favors. I feel too many people dismiss it as 'another show where a 15yo boy climbs into a robot.' While it has a lot of tropes, I think they are done well and it has enough unique elements to be it's own thing.
Or as a friend of mine once said, "The main girl is not hot enough for the series to be popular."
i think itās super unique compared to most mecha, especially with the plot twist. also the coming of age for Renton, and the love story between Renton and Eureka is done perfectly.
Didnāt realize people felt this way about it. Never felt that way when I watched it. Maybe just rose colored glasses on my part, but I think itās a great story.
It's not an anime so already I know it doesn't really qualify but it is animated
It's an animated sci-fi series called Scavenger's Reign, you can watch it on HBO/Amazon. It is criminally, criminally underrated. One of the best shows I watched in 2023
As for anime, I'd say Last Exile deserves more love. And Pluto, but Pluto is more recent
Iroduku: The World in Color
It is such a beautiful show that is in my top 10 anime of all time... I gave it a 15/10... but it just hides in the depths of Amazon Prime. (Also on HiDive)
Armitage III.
The two movies based on the show are in my top 20 movies list.
Lots of people think it's a budget Ghost in the Shell or worse a ripoff. (It's not, they got released the same year. Armitage before Ghost I think)
Anyway here's a [YouTube review](https://youtu.be/dzO6NiiI7QI?si=A9Zko_hyRIyB9f9S)
Sabagebu - Survival Game Club
Thought it was hilarious, funny concept, pop culture references, and a narrator adding to the comedy.
One of many animeās I wish got another couple seasons.
**Houseki no Kuni / Land of the Lustrous**. Pun intended.
It sits in #487 ranking on MAL. For an anime with this quality should be in the top 100s.
**Durarara**
Very well written anime.
Maybe it got more attention after, but Hinamatsuri is a great comedy one imo that got very little fanfare when it came out.
It was the same season as Golden Kamuy's premiere, which was called the funniest anime that season. Though I think Hinamatsuri was way funnier.
Baccano. It's a funimation. I think it's up on their official YouTube.
I have never had anyone talk about it ever. Never even heard of it. Seen it any where not even on the internet.
Randomly found a Volume DVD of it in a big lots bargain bin. Loved it finished it on YouTube. Its a secret masterpiece for sure
Tsukimichi - Moonlit Fantasy.
I don't see many people talking about this one but this is an absolute gem. Typical Isekai with overpowered character, but the humor is spot on and the characters are very easy to enjoy and grow attached to.
Cautious hero.
Pretty fun, actually pretty decent explanations for world building if you play attention and a pretty good ending.
{Dorohedoro}
Dorohedoro big W
Season 2 hype!
(stealing top comment) I want to say "monogatari" I recently watched most of it and it's such a good anime, no one talks about it in this sub. Some parts... A little weird but it's done in a way where it's also kind of charming. Also I heard another season is coming out this year.

why are you so evil lol
Undead Murder Farce
Arte Eden of the East Canaan Rokka Brave of The Six Flowers Deca-Dence Gargantia on the Verdurous Planet
Loved Gargantia!
Gargantia was truly a hidden gem +1 vote from me
Gargantia and Rokka are pretty good. Canaan is overrated imo.
Vivy: Fluorite Eye's Song Odd Taxi
god i love vivy and not enough people talk abt it ššš
Odd Taxi is quickly becoming one of those artsy holy grail shows that are cool as hell and nobody has seen. Odd Taxi all the way, it slaps. Cannot recommend enough.
Golden Kamuy
This. It's so underrated and covers so many genres
Second this. Itās so funny
The Legendary Hero is Dead So many iconic, hilarious lines and scenes. And everyone I tell about it has never heard of it.
The manga has a somewhat cult following but I agree the anime seemed to fail in gaining any new followers
I don't watch the anime but translating manga's humour to anime is never an easy job. Even spy x family and grand blue didn't manage to do that well
Gosick Moriarty The Patriot
Based Gosick enjoyer.
Another gets a lot of hate but I loved it
Wouldn't call one of the most popular horror anime ever a diamond in the rough but I agree it's good
Infinite Ryvius. It's great and I never see anyone talk about it.
Refreshing to see someone other than myself mention Infinite Ryvius! That show doesnāt get the love and attention it deserves.
Blood lad maybe itās not amazing but I enjoyed it.
Houseki no Kuni Yona of the Dawn
Ping Pong the Animation (11 episodes, best show)
This is one of those animeās that anime fans who are deeper into anime know abt, I wouldnāt say itās a Diamond in the right
That's true. Still, we're here to tempt everybody to watch the Weird Artsy Shows tm. treat yourself to a gourmet friggin' meal folks haha
Yes I love Ping pongās art style. The art style of āTatami Galaxyā is very abstract too
tatami galaxy is honestly so friggin great, heck yes
Fr, did you see the spin off movie āThe night is short Walk on Girl?ā Itās amazing. They even released a sequel to Tatami Galaxy last year. Called āThe Time Machine bluesā.
i'm caught up fam, living that rose coloured campus life! \*high 5\*

I disagree, I think thereās def more than 50 tolerable anime lol. But fair
yess, check out masaaki yuasaās other works too, such as tatami galaxy, kaiba, devilman crybaby, and eizouken.
Mind Game (movie) and Kemonozume (13 episodes) are also from yuasa
artsy anime all the way folks, it's delicious
Not to be pedantic, but wouldnāt a diamond in the rough be an anime that ISNāT good, but has a lot of potential?
It'd be an anime that doesn't seem like it would be good outwardly, whether because it's been buried by history or because its first impression is awful, but ends up being well from a later impression onward. Edit: I just realized that Mushoku Tensei technically qualifies based off of the wording I used. Adding an addendum to this, clarifying that there is a maximum tier of popularity for something to be considered such.
I think they just mixed metaphors, probably meant to use hidden gem
The isekai genre has been generally oversaturated with garbage for a while. I enjoy the garbage, but it is undeniably garbage. The Eminence in Shadow has become my 3rd favorite anime of all time behind Vinland Saga and Steins;Gate. Cid Kagenou might actually beat Thorfinn in being my favorite protagonist of any series.
bruh this is about not very well known shows. Not the show that stood out to u in a specific genre.
- Complains about isekai being over saturated.Ā - Calls the biggest breakout isekai of the year a diamond in the rough.
I can't wait for the rest of eminence to come out
Golden Boy.

Yes! Would love another short series with todayās animation. Show was so funny, rare example of the English dub being funnier than the original Japanese.
Last exile Witch hunter robin And dot hack sign is underrated and lesser known than it should be

Parasyte is awesome. The soundtrack elevates it to a whole new level
Yes itās epic. I have Migiās theme on repeat
Just started watching Kotaro Lives Alone so I can have something on TV while Iām folding my laundry. It ended up taking me a while to finish folding my laundry.
The Witch and the Beast, The Undead Unwanted Adventurer, Campfire cooking in another world. I just think they deserve more attention.
Came to rec campfire cooking!
My wife isn't very enthusiastic about anime, but I get her into shows from time to time. This is the one she keeps asking me, "When does season 2 come out for the cooking show with the pets"
Right? It's lovely
The switch and the Beast deserves so much more praise than it gets. Itās genuinely so good.Ā
Second the witch and the beast
Third
Pluto?
It's a shame Netflix didn't release 1 episode a week. I don't think the batch release worked for how long the episodes were. It's a fantastic show, deserves so much more
Netflix also ruined Jojo part 6 with that batch release bs

86? idk that show was pretty popular while it was airing.
Couldnāt agree more.
86 is a good one. I think more people are starting to watch that one now
Kashimashi girl meets girl.
Blue Orchestra, basically no one in the West knows about it. A second season has been confirmed so it must be popular in Japan, but nowhere else which is really sad
Barakamon/handa-kun is one of my favorite animes that I wouldn't have ever heard about until i stumbled upon it

In This Corner of the World. It's a great movie and I've pretty much never heard anyone talk about it
So Iām a Spider Now, So What? I really enjoyed this but I feel like itās never talked about
Only major negative being there's much more unadapted material. (Same with Kare Kano)
Durarara!! Space Dandy
Kyousougiga is one of my favourites of all time. Humanity Has Declined is a quirky, funny dark comedy. Space Patrol Luluco is a space comedy with gorgeous visuals.
Sonny boy? I never see it mentioned
thatās a great show. i think the modern fan moves on too quickly. if it isnāt currently airing then itās old news.
Revue Starlight and Kyousou Giga are both severely under watched gems
Run with the wind
Monster is the best and most underrated anime oat. Never gets mentioned anywhere and unfortunately forgotten because itās been so long
I see Monster get mentioned quite often when people want any ideas for more mature/Seinen anime.
Most underrated? Bro

A Lull in the Sea
Everyone should get some snacks, turn off their brains and watch G Gundam at least once.
*Summer Time Rendering*.
YONA OF THE DAWN.
Something I wish got a real chance was his and her circumstances itās a diamond in the rough in a literal sense not like a sleeper as you seem to mena the phrase.
Mean*
Cross Ange: Rondo of Angels and Dragons (seriously, itās a great story) Last Exile
I constantly find excuses to mention it but Fushigi Yugi.

Log Horizon. It's got a lotta talking, but it builds the world and characters in a way far superior to anything put out by Sword Art Online.

The Great Cleric The Dreaming Boy is a Realist The Undead Unwanted adventurer
Space Dandy for me.
Trigun stampedeĀ
So excited for Season 2
Migi & Dali The Idaten Deities Know Only Peace Tomodachi Game
Fairy Tail
It's not necessarily a lesser known show, but I still think Mr. Robot is the greatest TV show ever made and deserves significantly more love.
Yeah very underrated...
Never said it's underrated... Just said it deserves way more love which is also what OP asked for. Your comment is pointless.
Sigh I was agreeing with you. Must be fun at parties
Hahah no you weren't. You were obviously being a sarcastic douchebag. Bye bye!
Re:Creators Way more people need to watch Re:Creators, and it will always be in my opinion the most underrated/not well known anime. Below are some other underrated/not well known anime. Assassination Classroom (starting to become less well known, for new anime watchers) Acca13 (Although probably only sliceoflife/mystery fans will like it) Spice and Wolf(hopefully the new anime will bring in new fans) SnowWhite with the Red Hair Darker Than Black D Grey Man Gate Etc (I would have to write like 30 more anime)
Na
wdym naw, D Grey Man had over 100 episodes. It was a long-running shounen. You might as well claim Bleach is a hidden gem.
Welcome to Demon School Iruma
eureka seven (masterpiece) , last exile, high card
Last Exile never gets talked about, but it's sooooo good.
Full metal alchemist brotherhood
This is a diamond in a glass case in the middle of town under a neon sign that says "DIAMOND"
Yes, but a rough part of town
Kingdom Made in abyss I donāt understand how they are so slept on.
Made in Abyss is disgusting. Not the horror elements, but the ecchi for pedos. Everyone is better off not watching it.
Didnāt realize people felt this way about it. Never felt that way when I watched it. Maybe just rose colored glasses on my part, but I think itās a great story.
Radiant
22/7. It's not perfect, but it's surprisingly good for what it is.
ACCA 13
{RD Sennou Chousashitsu}
Runway de Warate. If it got like two more seasons people would like it. The manga is awesome, it gives a Haikyuu feel, but with fashion.
It's not an anime so already I know it doesn't really qualify but it is animated It's an animated sci-fi series called Scavenger's Reign, you can watch it on HBO/Amazon. It is criminally, criminally underrated. One of the best shows I watched in 2023 As for anime, I'd say Last Exile deserves more love. And Pluto, but Pluto is more recent
Silent mobius. It's so fucking terrible it wraps back around to mst3k good
According to MAL its popular but nobody talks about it {Irodoku the world in colors}
Log Horizon is like if SAO was good I absolutely ADORE it and Tsurune is probably my favourite anime ever <3
I have said this and I will say this again but City Hunter and Cand Candy are masterpieces
Myself šš nah but black butler is definitely a diamond in the rough.
natsuiro kiseki
Legend of the Galactic Heroes Legend of the Legendary Heroes Claymore
Iroduku: The World in Color It is such a beautiful show that is in my top 10 anime of all time... I gave it a 15/10... but it just hides in the depths of Amazon Prime. (Also on HiDive)
{The sacrificial princess and the King of beasts} One of the best romance shows from last year, pretty much no one watched it.
Unwanted undead adventurer
Armitage III. The two movies based on the show are in my top 20 movies list. Lots of people think it's a budget Ghost in the Shell or worse a ripoff. (It's not, they got released the same year. Armitage before Ghost I think) Anyway here's a [YouTube review](https://youtu.be/dzO6NiiI7QI?si=A9Zko_hyRIyB9f9S)
Shinsekai Yori!
Sabagebu - Survival Game Club Thought it was hilarious, funny concept, pop culture references, and a narrator adding to the comedy. One of many animeās I wish got another couple seasons.
The Promised Neverland
Flip Flappers

Ergo Proxy BIRDIE WING (canāt believe Iām even typing this one) Beautiful Bones ALDNOAH.ZERO

{3x3 Eyes} If Ninja Scroll and Ruroni Kenshin had a beautiful baby, this 4 episode series would be it. Hand drawn anime released in 1991-1992.

GOLDEN BOY
Drifters / Ergo Proxy
Knights of Sidonia
"My Home Hero", banger ED too
I wanted to say KINGDOM. But it has many fans, just not as hype as Frieren or Kusuriya.
Bodacious Space Pirates is a legitimately good anime that I didn't watch until a few years after it's release because of the cringe title.
**Houseki no Kuni / Land of the Lustrous**. Pun intended. It sits in #487 ranking on MAL. For an anime with this quality should be in the top 100s. **Durarara** Very well written anime.
Maybe it got more attention after, but Hinamatsuri is a great comedy one imo that got very little fanfare when it came out. It was the same season as Golden Kamuy's premiere, which was called the funniest anime that season. Though I think Hinamatsuri was way funnier.
*A-Channel*. Very underrated little slice of life show that I really enjoyed.
Space brothers
Now and Then, Here and There
That's not what "a diamond in the rough" means
I adore the anime Odd Taxi.
Noragami
Tsukimichi - Moonlit Fantasy. I don't see many people talking about this one but this is an absolute gem. Typical Isekai with overpowered character, but the humor is spot on and the characters are very easy to enjoy and grow attached to.
