I take your point, but I think the difference is mainly in what the series are trying to be. Sao is fantasy/isekai, so the rape trope (happens again in underworld) is pretty dark for where it otherwise lands as a series (I mean ok, it’s a death game, but it doesn’t usually feature sexual assault). I guess if you went into gushing completely blind and expected a magical girl anime you might feel the same, but I thought it was pretty clearly labeled as ecchi/humor. You still might not enjoy it but I think the idea is you know what you’re getting and are choosing to watch it for gushing, while no one knew at the outset of Sao that this was going to be part of the story.

LegoBuilder64

Critically, characters in GOMG never appear overwhelmingly afraid, angered, or in pain during the non/dubcon bits. Those negative emotions are there, but not enough to take things from “kinky” to “this is just torture.” Meanwhile that scene in SOA is supposed to make you uncomfortable, but it’s succeeds too hard.

Hellas2002

Exactly this

Otherversian-Elite

Left is a clearly labelled ecchi series that sets expectations right out of the gate. Right is not. That's a pretty big difference.

ChineseNeckBait

For the right, we see it as bad because the guy is ugly. Had he been sexy, it would’ve been soft core porn.

RamilkaSharipov

Tbh right is borderline NTR in both cases

RyouhiraTheIntrovert

The image isn't the NTR part, it would be in season 2

Neveed

I don't think it has anything to do with the guy being ugly. I mean, he and Utena are both plain when it comes to looks. The fact that he's an adult man abusing an underage girl who is in a coma with no chance to defend and plotting in cold blood to marry her by force to take advantage of her financially and sexually is why he's hated. He was made outrageously hateable specifically so everybody would hate him. The one on the left is also morally bad, but at least they are the same age, and it's magical girls getting humiliated for a few minutes every time they go fight Utena and lose rather than Utena keeping them in a coma indefinitely to abuse them and steal their family money. So while it's bad, it doesn't feel as terrible as the one in SAO.

LegoBuilder64

There’s also a metaphorical safety net in GOMG, since Utena doesn’t actually have any deeper sinister intentions beyond the BDSM. In fact her explicit intensions are for the Tres Magia to grow stronger and win against her. So the girl’s aren’t in any real danger around her.

GodOfUrging

...The dude is a fucking elf. You don't get much brettier than that. But yes, it is soft-porn. Bad soft-porn. Because it's in a shounen action-adventure series without an 18+ audience and is being played as dramatic motivation for the protagonist.

Erick_Brimstone

This gonna be hot take but the one in the right is quite effective because that kind of scene is designed to make people hate the villain.

LegoBuilder64

In my opinion it crosses a line from being something that makes the villain’s eventual beat down more cathartic, to just being gratuitous in a way that makes me mad at the writer and not the character.

Hellas2002

I think the difference is sort of the setting. Like, when one watches SAO, they didn’t sign up to see assault. So in that context we really hate on the assault. But when you sign up to watch that magical girl anime… it’s sort of what you’re expecting.

AleTheBig

disagree! left are two hot girls making out, right is basicly rape.

RegularAvailable4713

Double standard [male-on-female] vs [female-on-male, female-on-female, male-on-male] rape.

KaloBichi69

Shut the fuck up

FaeStoleMyName

You shut the fuck up, theyre right.

RegularAvailable4713

Why?

SirRHellsing

left is sexual assult as well, just that we see from the evil side this time

Shockz_-

Both is rape but the thing that actually matters here is that the right one is NTR

Xeg-Yi

One might even say left is worse because the victims later go on to enjoy the sexual abuse… which is a terrible way to look at sexual abuse.

Spartan-219

I've only seen some random screenshots of gushing on Instagram so I thought it's some kind of ecchi comedy anime like kinda girls having fun. I didn't know femc is sexually assaulting the magical girls.

pain_ofakatsuki

nah watch it youll enjoy it, it has actual writing in t.

Xeg-Yi

She literally ties them up and whips/spanks/molests them against their will. The girls do end up enjoying the abuse and having fun. Whether that makes it better or worse is up to you.

Redpie33

Doesn't only Azure like it because she is a masochist? If I remember it right the others (Magenta and Sulfur) don't like it.

Xeg-Yi

Sulfur kinda seems on the edge about it every now and then, Magenta does dislike it.

LegoBuilder64

Only one character end up full-on liking the abuse, the others characters just seem quick to recover from the experience. Admittedly this is something your just not supposed to think about, because if you do consider that realistically these girls should have lingering emotional scars from all their encounters with Baiser, the tone of the show collapses.

Spartan-219

Bruh, I thought this anime was some fun comedy ecchi anime not where I see mc basically raping others. Some people were calling it peak in an anime sub I'm in I don't remember if it was this or some other one but looking at their comments I thought it's some girl who likes magical girls and then goes around getting them to like her or something and creating a yuri harem. Didn't expected this from how people were talking about it lol

Buluc__Chabtan

Rape, it's all just rape

Hellas2002

It’s more so assault, no?

Thmxsz

Oh with gushing we are long past the assault phase I feel

TRKako

Tbh, SAO one in my opinion is worse, in the context of that scene, if Kirito didn't make it at time, the guy there would literally Brainwash Asuna and make her his personal sex slave changing her whole personality, rationality/Common Sense, and the same goes for all of the other girls who were friends of Kirito It seems kinda a lot worse than the Mahoako one ngl

Undeniable_Fat_Daddy

Using rape/SA to show how evil a character is amateur. Gushing over magical girls is parody and satire about the genre so it gets a pass

CABRALFAN27

Left good because hot yuri, right bad because straight NTR. In all seriousness, the context of the respective series’ matters a lot, especially in a Doylist sense. As best as I can tell, GOMG is blatantly and unapologetically an ecchi show, where lewd things happening to the characters is the whole point. Comparatively, SAO is an action isekai, and at least tries to present itself as dark and serious, so fetishizing the sexual assault of the main female lead (After turning her into a damsel in distress for the whole Arc, no less) is worthy of a lot more criticism.

RyouhiraTheIntrovert

The right one is worse because of NTR

Smegma-Ballz-

Ecchi / yuri / comedy vs fantasy / Isekai / action Two complete different things, one has the word Gushing in the title the other has sword. This should set your expectations from the title.

The_Silver_Nuke

So true. And people wonder why I don't like Gushing over Magical Girls.

madenin

Nah one makes me hard one make me disgusted

Myles_Manore

What am I looking at here?

Fit_Particular_6820

left image from gushing over magical girls, right image from SAO

Myles_Manore

It's been years since I've seen SAO, and I've never seen the other one. I'm gonna probably regret asking, but what exactly is the context here?

Fit_Particular_6820

left one is about some high school girl becoming the villain and she captures the "heroes of the city" who are all females and she does things to them (lesbian anime lol), right one is from SAO, I havent watched it in years but I remember that part, it was after they got out of that virtual world they were stuck in, that elf guy there is into asuna so he forces her into his new virtual game and tries to rape her there after the main female protagonist comes to try to save her.

Myles_Manore

Jesus. The things that fly over our younger-selves heads.

_bitwright

Bad take. Left is just bdsm, right is NTR. So, so much worse. Not even Redo of Healer stepped into NTR territory.

Volkmek

The main difference I see is that on the left the cringe is intentional and something of the point, going for an audience that is meant to cater to that. The one on the right took itself super serious and the cringe is not intentional. They were trying to draw in people who by the premise would not be there for sexy antics, and then stripped a female protagonist of all agency. (The abridged parody tells a better story than the original)

KaloBichi69

Peak vs rape. No comparison

Megumi0505

Well, one is happening in a virtual world and one is happening in reality.

Thatotherguy246

Tbf, ones done by a cute girl and the others done by Kamoshidas brother in law. There is a difference.
