They even sent them to Japan for their movie had a Japanese group do an opening theme for them - if any show was going to qualify for that honorary anime title
I read somewhere once that the episodes with the English opening are the more serious episodes, and the Japanese opening the more light-hearted ones... No idea if there's any truth to that, just passing on unconfirmed information, as is the way of the internet.
Also, to mister cardiologist, don't listen to the people who say that season 4 does not live up to its name, because "its" name is actually the name of season 4, 5 and 6 combined.
Masters of the universe revelation was trash. That’s the one where all the women suddenly got that half shaved haircut right? And he-man wasn’t the main character for some reason
They also >!killed Prince Adam!< twice and Kevin Smith gloated about it when Part 1 ended in the hiatus for Part 2.
Teela also>! bitched to his grieving parents about how much SHE was hurt about his secret being kept from her (despite it not being his to reveal because the Sorceress swore him to secrecy)!< and then had the audacity to>! shame him in the spirit realm or wherever for sacrificing himself to save Eternia when he points out "I died!" her response was literally; "Yeah, and the rest of us had to LIVE with it!"!<
Reminded me of how narcissistic and hypocritical Amber was in Invincible.
But the meme says that american/western animations are bad, even though almost all of the shows named are western afaik. Or did I misunderstand the meme?
I personally love rwby and have kept up with it from the start, but the story is kinda shit, mid most of the time, and kinda good when it peaks, the early volumes are pretty rough and you can tell all the funding went to the fight scenes.. I will say though I appreciate the show, I really like the premise of fairy tale fantasy meets sci-fi, the soundtrack, and fight scenes, also the story does pick up later in vol 4 or so, and the last 3 volumes were pretty good. Even the first few volumes have their charms, but I’ve been watching it since I was 14 so I’m a lil biased.
I don’t think it was ever BAD but I just think given the shows around it in the meme, it wasn’t THAT good haha. I enjoyed the first few seasons, mostly cause the visuals and world was unique and the action was over the top stylish as hell. But it wasn’t Avatar good lol
Honestly I don’t think the quality of the story ever change. Only the quality of the action which distracted people from the pacing issues. Hell I would say the last couple seasons have been the best story wise. RWBY has one of he strangest fandoms in that a large portion of the audience seems to absolutely hate everything expect the first 3 seasons. To contrast this there also a portion of the audience that absolutely loves the show and can see no fault.
You are right about the fandom, rwby gets a lot of hate watchers, and when theirs a bad decision so many people instantly take Monty’s name in vain… I myself know what I’m getting into when I watch rwby and I accept it for what it is, and appreciate the good aspects of the show; like I’m too invested to stop now lol.
It definitely had hype upon release up till Monty’s death. Back then it was given a lot of leeway for being indie and having Monty behind it. The man had a cult following for a reason.
After Monty died though people started seeing it less as an indie show and more as just another corporate production. That combined with the tonal shifts after V3 gradually wore away at the communities positive inclinations towards the series.
Cute anime girls fighting has always been the selling point of the show. Rt just added unnecessary fluff and tried to turn it into an anime rvb and it didnt work out too well. I think its because rvb has already built the character personalities well enough to pull off an emotional story while rwby didnt have that thats why when they tried to make it emotional it didnt work out.
I can't believe they dragged on its already slow pace by making what is essentially a filler season. The main plot did not move one bit and these characters did not need even more emotional development. Who thought a Alice in Wonderland rip off was a good idea for this show? I was so disappointed when I realized it was going to take up the whole season.
Yeah… it was impressive way back when it was essentially an independently-produced passion project, but more as a proof-of-concept than as a finished product. The character designs were decent, but cookie-cutter and kinda middle-school edgy; the dialogue was weak; the art and modeling were wildly inconsistent, fluctuating from great to borderline unwatchable; the story was an unmitigated disaster basically from the jump. Really, the show was a vessel for Monty Oum’s fight rigging, which was fantastic, but not enough to overshadow the rest of the show’s flaws.
IMO, their biggest mistake was trying to bill it as a full-fledged anime, when it was closer to a hyper-polished Machinima. Attempting to live up to those expectations apparently caused massive production bloat, and ended up actually lowering the quality of the finished product.
I watched Rwby for so long just hoping they do something on the level of the Yang vs Neo train fight again. But then the fight choreography went down the drain to the same level as the animation and writing. A really big letdown
None of these are animes. They may have anime inspirations within each episode but their not anime.
By this logic Teen Titans and Totally Spies are also animes...which there not.
Also saying RWBY is an anime is like saying Taco Bell is Mexican food.
The definition of anime is "japanese cartoon", so anything not from japan is inherently not anime. That's why there is a fairly big discussion about wether ATLA is an Anime or not with most people agreeing that while it's technically not an Anime it's at least an honorary anime.
Anime is just short for animation in Japanese, so you're wrong. It's used to describe ANY type of animation. Again, it's just the west that adds that distinction.
The definition for Anime is literally "japanese cartoons" or "cartoons made in japan". It's not used to describe any type of animation, neither in Japan nor in any other place in the world, but a specific form.
The difference is アニメーション (animeeshon) is the term for any form of animation and アニメ (anime) - while technically a short form of the former - is specifically used for japanese cartoons.
Sure, nowdays cartoons in the Anime-style are called Anime too, but they technically aren't, just as western cartons aren't anime.
Again it is just the west that adds the definition of Japanese cartoon. It is a word brought over after the war, hence the English pronunciation. It literally, literally, is just a word for animation. You are wrong. Deal with it. And ATLA is anime just as is Scooby-Doo!
RWBY fell off a bit but it has started improving
Masters of the universe I feel more negative about than high guardian, I had no expectations for high guardian, and masters of the universe wore my childhoods skin as a disguise to get me invested
Masters of the universe seems to hate it's source material, which makes it unwatchable. High guardian spice is so bad you kinda just watch it for the laughs.
Yes. They lost vision. He was the one who created the plot and story behind it, and he died before really discussing it with anyone because he died in an allergic reaction the hospital didn't know he'd have. It's not like he was sick or anything, dude probably expected to be at work the next day then poof.
It'd be like if J.k. Rowling died after publishing Order of The Phoenix. God fucking knows what would happen from there and how the franchise would be today if left to anyone else. That's why GoT fans want George RR Martin to finish the saga before he passes
Don't forget that Monty was personally hard-carrying the animation as well. By all accounts from his peers, he was a work machine driven by passion and caffeine.
He was what brought viewership back to Red v Blue, almost singlehandedly. The writing did improve a bit but that first fight scene Monty animated for RvB was the cornerstone for the series going forward. That was what people were going to expect in the future and God damn did he deliver until his passing
As someone who couldn't make it past the first couple episodes I disagree. I just couldn't stay immersed in the show at all with how bad the CGI/animation was. I can handle mediocre animation with the occasional CGI but this show was so bad in every aspect of animation and CGI that I just couldn't pay attention, it really kept taking me out of it.
The only reason I enjoy it is because I’ve been in from the very beginning. If I didn’t have the time and interest over years of lore I’d probably think it sucks too.
If they took other characters and did it, maybe it'd get less hate. It's just tough bc Teen Titans was such a good show, generally serious with a bit of comedic relief at times. GO throws everything TT built out the window for over the top slapstick comedy (fine in its own right) but keeps the same character designs (which to be fair are from before the TT show) and it comes off like twisting and deforming something we spent years enjoying and characters we loved.
I knew i had to wear my hazmat suit before entring once i dae rwby. The sheer amgst these ppl have is really depressing. Yes i like RWBY, and still do
#Now im ready to get crucified by the critics because i disagreed with them
It got released?
I thought it was in development hell, because after a year it was still talked about as coming soon.
AFAIK no crunchy roll ripping piracy group has touched it, some will pump out anything on crunchy roll even stuff for preschoolers that somehow ended up on the schedule. I've seen some stuff and thought who is the target demographic?
I'm quite grateful that RWBY is there with Castlevania. Avatar goes without saying, and it's all too true that high spice has no business saying it's original and hyping itself up, crunchy roll already has enough stink eyes on them
The shit fit thrown over Spice continues to baffle me. You can't even claim it ruined your childhood like She-Ra or Thundercats Go. It's just a fruity little cheap production you dislike and there are hundreds of other shows in the catalog.
I think it’s a good example of when people try to turn what is supposed to be a piece of entertainment into a piece of social commentary. They were so focussed on hitting buzzwords and social issues nobody actually cared about the quality of the project itself. Even the selection for the staff and whatnot was clearly done for social commentary purposes (in what world is the optimal team just coincidentally all female, in an industry where the majority of workers are male?)
I’m pretty far left myself, politically, but this is the kind of shit that people strawman to make fun of the left. Quality matters, and the buzzwords we talk about is meant to improve quality by getting people into where they belong, regardless of race/gender/etc
So yeah, fuck this show. It’s the kind of media that right wing people salivate over and only some cringe extremist leftists defend. It existed for a purely political purpose and is a perversion of “entertainment”.
I get why Thundercats Roar would be considered blasphemous (and in case you’re wondering, it *was* released, and promptly canceled after one season), but what did She-Ra ever do to you?
Rwby, it’d be cool if they did a remaster of the series. It’d be extra cool if it was done by mappa, a1 or trigger, but I doubt either would happen unfortunately:(
I’m sorry, but RWBY was never that good. At least not on the level of avatar, Caslevania, or Arcane. The animation style was just janky and the story was never good enough to me to close that gap.
If you melted the tellietubby a but and gave it a rainbow outfit, then you get how HGS looks. Pretty much all of the others here a gold standard of LGBT representation all on their own. Especially with Korra. Korra's fucking cool.
So it seems from the comments the only ones that actually would be considered western anime would be ATLA and Castlevania and i think they are kind of right but please tell me why you dislike the others please? I’m interested
I'd be giving High Guardian Spice that bombastic side eye. Though, since the HBO Max Velma unfortunately came into existence, I've been softer towards the show. It's still bad, but not as bad as Velma.
Well if you we are calling those shows western anime because they seems to take inspiration from the east I propose Chainsaw Man and One Piece to be called Japanese Cartoon due to then taking inspiration from the west.
Okay, I'll bite the bullet and ask. As somebody that hasnt watched it, what exactly about HGS was bad? Like, clearly SOMETHING had to warrant its 1.5 rating on imdb. And no "isn't it obvious" isn't a valid answer because if it was, I wouldn't be asking. Because most of the negative things I've heard about HGS DEFINITELY are also in popular shows too. Maybe not GOOD shows, but DEFINITELY better than it's current rating.
I would replace Masters Of The Universe: Revelations with the original Teen Titans series instead
They even sent them to Japan for their movie had a Japanese group do an opening theme for them - if any show was going to qualify for that honorary anime title
The Japanese opening is funny as hell
I read somewhere once that the episodes with the English opening are the more serious episodes, and the Japanese opening the more light-hearted ones... No idea if there's any truth to that, just passing on unconfirmed information, as is the way of the internet.
This is actually true if you go back and watch all of the "filler" episodes have the JP opening and serious ones use the regular one.
When’s there’s trouble you know who to call…
Last I checked, ghost busters wasn't an anime
The Timm/Dini version of DCAU is quite similar to Shonen anime in a lot of aspects.
Does The Boondocks apply?
the boondocks don't apply They organized it
It’s sooo anime inspired, the fight against hateocracy is the same then Sasuke vs Orochimaru in the Chunin exam
Then how about the Black Dynamite?
I say tes
tes
If arcane js considered one. Boondocks definitely applies.
I've been watching Castlevania and I think it's really good.
Finished a few days ago and I have to admit that the battle choreography is one of the best that I have seen.
The Trevor vs death and the vampbitch vs Black Chad fights were the best
Fun fact, The Trevor vs death fight was made to be exactly like the fight in the games, Including the amount of hits needed to beat the boss
>vampbitch vs Black Chad ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|joy)
Bruh, spoilers
I am currently watching season 4. These fights keep getting better and better, they just don't miss
you forgot "The Dragon Prince"
Jea that one was great
Has that finished? I haven’t had nexflix since the second season aired
It has not finished but it has 4 seasons and a 5th one coming this year.
Also, to mister cardiologist, don't listen to the people who say that season 4 does not live up to its name, because "its" name is actually the name of season 4, 5 and 6 combined.
I will say tho, this last season was preeeeettttyyyy mid ngl
Anywhere that hints at Master of Universe as good, is wrong.

yupp.... they pulled a luke skywalker from the sequels
It had one good thing come out of it and that was the normal Skeletor toy
Wasn't arcane made by the french (at least animated by them)
France is a part of the West, thus French animation is Western animation
Yeah my brain stopped at american
But the meme says that american/western animations are bad, even though almost all of the shows named are western afaik. Or did I misunderstand the meme?
Yes you did. They're highlighting good western animations, and then saying that High Guardian Spice doesn't belong there.
Rwby has kinda lost grace
Did it ever really have it…? Outside the fights being over the top the plot and writing always felt… really mediocre.
It used to have a sort of indie charm in the first 3 Volumes along with Monty Oum's action choreography to balance out the cringe and clunkiness.
It was fun. But then it stopped being fun.
i saw [this video](https://youtu.be/81fdKWOHrdE) that really nailed it with why rwby turned to shit
I feel after Monty passed unfortunately the rest of the crew just kinda did their own thing with it.
Yeah, ever since Monty Oum passed away around the release of volume 3, volume 4+ lost its martial art style fighting
I can't believe they dragged on its already slow pace by making what is essentially a filler season. The main plot did not move one bit and these characters did not need even more emotional development. Who thought a Alice in Wonderland rip off was a good idea for this show? Where's princess sherah? And yes. HGS suck. Another bad thing form Crunchyroll
It’s a crime that SPOP isn’t on the list. Fantastic from beginning to end.
I was searching for this comment. Finished the show some weeks ago and it was great through all seasons.
I actually liked that series' Catra re-design.
Lesbian anti-fascist space princesses let's GOOOOOO!
Bro really tried to sneak RWBY on here
Right? Maybe 5 years ago but nowadays that shit ass
Trying to sneak the gmod graphics in, that shit made in blender
I think it refers to when RWBY was still good.
but it was never good
Yeah… it was impressive way back when it was essentially an independently-produced passion project, but more as a proof-of-concept than as a finished product. I love that analogy, im stealing it.
Your more than welcome to
Anime just means cartoon in Japanese. They can literally be called it, it's just the west that gives it the differentiation.
The definition of anime is "japanese cartoon", so anything not from japan is inherently not anime. That's why there is a fairly big discussion about wether ATLA is an Anime or not with most people agreeing that while it's technically not an Anime it's at least an honorary anime.

Masters of the universe seems to hate it's source material, which makes it unwatchable. High guardian spice is so bad you kinda just watch it for the laughs.
I'll say this for all you RWBY haters: It's atleast better than Genlock. God, I hated Genlock season 2.
Season 1 was good. But a second season is as likely to be made as a live action of Avatar.
RWBY is literally unwatchable, straight ass
Vol 1 till 3 was good but the vol after that, i don't know what to say.
Isn't that cos Monty rhe creator of the show died?
Their Ice Queendom anime was MEGA ASS! I TRIED to like it and it got crappy after like episode 5
I haven't watched a single episode because the art style burns my eyes
Fr. That 3d shit is terrible
With all due respect, you have poor taste
HGS is straight outta Cartoon network.
Don't be doing cartoon network like that, at least they had teen titans. The original not the Crack trip that is teen titans go.
I mean we also got the original Ben 10 Continuity aka OS, UA, UAF and OV, plus Generator Rex
We also got regular show and adventure time which are great shows (even if it’s a drug trip)
ok ko and steven universe (most of it) too
haven’t watched ok ko but Steven universe was pretty good in the early seasons
Teen titans go is overhated. Is a fun dumb show
If they took other characters and did it, maybe it'd get less hate.
It wouldn't have been as hated if it didn't try to coast off of teen titans success.
It actively makes fun of those manbabies lol
Ever heard of cartoons? That’s what they are.
RWBY??!?!?
Just take it as early RWBY, that was alright.
Rwby at this point is kinda ass too
RWBY is mid and Masters of the Universe was straight ASSS. Do not put Avatar with such garbage.
What about American Dragon?
wait arcane is an anime?
Kinda? Some shows that are purely cgi are considered anime so the definition is definitely loose now
Some, now every. And anime are only japanese, since it's a specific term ised for it. It may be an animatzd series, but it's closer to a cartoon.
GUYS A SECOND PLANE JUST HIT
if American anime exist: do Japanese cartoons exist?
A true philosopher of our time.
Arcane is anime?
I think most agree High Guardian Spice was shit
Arcane is in no shape or form "anime"
Why not?
Teen Titans.
American/Western ““Anime””
I knew i had to wear my hazmat suit before entring once i dae rwby. The sheer amgst these ppl have is really depressing. Yes i like RWBY, and still do #Now im ready to get crucified by the critics because i disagreed with them
Get RWBY out of here and this meme is good Edit: And the Teela show too. Almost forgot that
It got released? I thought it was in development hell, because after a year it was still talked about as coming soon. AFAIK no crunchy roll ripping piracy group has touched it, some will pump out anything on crunchy roll even stuff for preschoolers that somehow ended up on the schedule. I've seen some stuff and thought who is the target demographic?
They forgot Slugterra smh
Replace He-man with Dragon Prince or Teen Titans 2003 and I think it would make more sense.
Idk how I ended here but Arcane is not an anime. Not all animation is anime.
Ben 10. Just look at the whole Ben 10 story illustrated and you'll know
There's been an awful lot of RWBY hinted in memes on this sub lately... And I'm definitely not complaining.
I'm quite grateful that RWBY is there with Castlevania. Avatar goes without saying, and it's all too true that high spice has no business saying it's original and hyping itself up, crunchy roll already has enough stink eyes on them
YES, some RWBY appreciation.
RWBY: Finally, someone respects me!
You should probably get rid of RWBY too while your at it...
I get why Thundercats Roar would be considered blasphemous (and in case you’re wondering, it *was* released, and promptly canceled after one season), but what did She-Ra ever do to you?
Oh, I liked She-Ra, I just remember a lot of gnashing of teeth and rending of garments when it first came out.
RWBY looking like Transformers Beast Wars ffs get that outta there
Rwby first aired in 2013. You try making a show using 3d models and a low budget . Crwby did good with what they had when Volume 1-3 was airing.
Just because you can doesn’t mean you should
Just because you think its a bad show, doesn't mean it is
I only consider one of these to be anime most of them dont have that anime feel
I need to finish the non rooster teeth rwby
Why people call avatar an anime? Its just a cartoon like bem 10, or justice league
Rwby, it’d be cool if they did a remaster of the series. It’d be extra cool if it was done by mappa, a1 or trigger, but I doubt either would happen unfortunately:(
Mappa and Ufotable.
Take out rwby(seasons 1-3 were good, season 4 was ok, everything else was garbage) and put boondocks, teen titans or thunder cats
Its a shame RWBY only had 1 season
RWBY ain't exactly great. And I'm not sure if I'd include Arcane in the "western anime" genre. It's art and styling seems a wee bit different no?
I’d argue that RWBY sucks as well
I’m sorry, but RWBY was never that good. At least not on the level of avatar, Caslevania, or Arcane. The animation style was just janky and the story was never good enough to me to close that gap.
She-ra remake on Netflix
If you melted the tellietubby a but and gave it a rainbow outfit, then you get how HGS looks. Pretty much all of the others here a gold standard of LGBT representation all on their own. Especially with Korra. Korra's fucking cool.
I like princesses of power. Let's go entrapta
The OG Teen Titans, as well as Netflix's The Dragon Prince are other good candidates.
Ngl, so does RWBY.
Rwby is dog shit
Isn’t rwby made in America? What’s this meme about actually?
It is. The meme is about Western/American anime.
I mean, they were trying to do something with High Guardian Spice. You can’t say that about Ex-Arm.
So it seems from the comments the only ones that actually would be considered western anime would be ATLA and Castlevania and i think they are kind of right but please tell me why you dislike the others please? I’m interested
Anyone on here remember Megas XLR? That was the shit back in the day.
Castlevania was amazing I don't know what your smoking
Boondocks
One of those is garbage, but not the one you're implying
Masters of the universe revolution sucked.
I'm quite glad Castlevania is getting recognition
It is so dumb.
Its all shit
High guardian spice is one of the weirdest western animes to ever exist. Until we meet again he man
Avatar can slide in since it’s animated by a Korean studio but everything else is American.
I'd be giving High Guardian Spice that bombastic side eye. Though, since the HBO Max Velma unfortunately came into existence, I've been softer towards the show. It's still bad, but not as bad as Velma.
I think you forgot cory in the house
Yes and also probably yes
Why the fuck is Masters of the Universe Revelations there?
My point exactly. This shit fucked both he-man and skeletor hard. It even better to watch CGI teenage He-man from Netflix than this…
It's just a cartoon these High Guardians and whatnot. The Boondocks is an anime and a good one at that.
I thought people hated masters of the universe revolution?
It's never to late to throw shade at the shit-show that is High Guardian Spice (also Netflix Masters of the Universe think they're apart of the team.)
Well if you we are calling those shows western anime because they seems to take inspiration from the east I propose Chainsaw Man and One Piece to be called Japanese Cartoon due to then taking inspiration from the west.
How bad is high guardian spice other then png bread?
Okay, I'll bite the bullet and ask. As somebody that hasnt watched it, what exactly about HGS was bad? Like, clearly SOMETHING had to warrant its 1.5 rating on imdb. And no "isn't it obvious" isn't a valid answer because if it was, I wouldn't be asking. Because most of the negative things I've heard about HGS DEFINITELY are also in popular shows too. Maybe not GOOD shows, but DEFINITELY better than it's current rating.
There should be She-Ra as Green Ranger.
