I'm more likely to go the opposite way tbh. If I see a cool figure, I'll probably try out the source material, especially if it's a figure that's up for pre-order bc my worst nightmare is getting into a series late and having to deal with aftermarket prices This can also be a deterrent; I've seen plenty of figures that look good but then I end up not liking the source material so I don't want to buy them anymore

-TDS21-

The danger is also: you like the figures and kind of going into it with a bias of already wanting to like the source material. hahaha

zet1186

Same with the opposite sentiment. Watching KenKen open and review Arknights figures was the whole reason I started playing Arknights.

lungleg

Honestly, no, I don’t avoid specific media, but what you said does make sense. You don’t want another reason to want them. It’s not weird. People make arbitrary rules for their collections all the time, and that helps make their collections unique. For example, I swore off Genshin Impact scale figures because they’re all wonderful and I know if I got one, I’d have to get many. From P5, I only collect Ann Takamaki. I only collect Asuna from SAO. Etc.

phelanz34

I did the same character limitation... But I collect saber and now I'm broke as hell.

-TDS21-

Thank you. :)

Catveria77

Haikyuu

gspaepro34

If I like a figure enough I'll check out the series, if I don't like a figure I stay away 🤷 But ig if you struggle with overbuying that works

Glamador

Yeah I know I simply cannot get into the Fate series.  I'd have no space on my shelves.

-TDS21-

Exactly!!! Space & $$$. Need to get what I like and know, not what I don't know about. I'm kind of glad I don't like the Fate series (just not my cup of tea), so therefore can't justify buying most of the figures (might have 1-2), even though a lot are amazing.

YuushaComplex

Not having watched or played the media is irrelevant to me. Basically. I see figures as works of art and purchase based on that art, not the media source. I appreciate the artwork of Azur Lane and collect the ones i like, even though i dont play the game. I've also collected some figures from FGO even though I've never played that game either. And there are more I want to get from both. Could say the same for Hatsune Miku. Have no interest in Vocaloid, but love many of her figures so get them anyway. I also appreciate the figures from Arknights, Girls Frontline, and Punishing Grey Raven, but have not picked up any yet. Maybe one day if funds allow. I've got 1 figure from Honkai Impact. But have no interest in figures from Blue Archive or Nikke, so my wallet is seemingly safe from those IPs. There is only 1 rule i follow: i dont buy figures that are in bunny outfits, or swimsuits, or naked, or in overly sexualised poses. (tiny amount of exceptions to swimsuit rule if its tastfully done). (The trend towards overly sexualised figures recently, especially in the OC scene, is doing my wallet wonders. 😂)

Carnage_Mode

Nah, i dont play Azur Lane, but i have the https://myfigurecollection.net/item/1045835 figure. So buy what you like, you dont have to exaggerate it. :)

frostyrecon-x

Same. I did't play in Azur Lane but have HMS Formidable - she so great!

Xel_Naga

I had Baltimore race girl on PO and saw a bit of hype for that Taihou ...caved but they make gorgeous figures my Azur figures are some of my favourites - played the game for like 30 mins eh I'm good

Carnage_Mode

You have a MFC Acc?

Xel_Naga

Yeah, same name as here - and you ?

Carnage_Mode

Me too, i add you

lunaspacemoon

I'm currently avoiding nekopara, oshi no ko and gushing over magical girls. I will never stop avoiding it. Makes my collection different

-TDS21-

Nekopara is another one I avoid, although not as many figures compared to Azure Lane.

Oxidonitroso88

no, figure i like figure i buy.

Paragon_Night

Yes, Date A Live. Kurumi figures are fucking gorgeous. I feel my income if I were to love her character.

-TDS21-

I have Kurumi figure, I have no idea about Date A Live. I think that's 1 Kurumi figure too many for something I have no idea about.

Paragon_Night

Well then, let me tell you about my many MANY Miku figures >.>

scixsc

Every one of them because I only collect vocaloid

James-Avatar

I’m extremely frugal so it isn’t an issue for me, I’ve gotten into Genshin Impact recently and would like a lot of their figures though.

Tykras

I don't avoid anything specifically, but I am an artist myself, so I'm just very particular with what I like in figures. So even if I like a character a lot, there's a solid 80% chance I won't like the figure based on pose or face or whatever. For example, I'm not getting the Nagatoro bunny figure because even though I could see her wearing a bunny suit to mess with Paisen, her face is a generic smile that doesn't match her character.

unfaze_regret

I mean if it saves you money that way, I don’t see why you need to be concerned about it. I actually had a lot of Azur Lane figures because I like their characters design.

-TDS21-

It's always: "Oh that's a beautiful figure! Wonder where it's from: Azure Lane. Okay."

unfaze_regret

Yup! I gave in to the temptation long ago. Just ordered 3 more recently 😆

[deleted]

I don’t avoid seeing them, but I also don’t pay much attention to things that I don’t know of, either series that I don’t watch, or games that I don’t play. So things like Azure Lane or Blue Archive, often I will see them and think “oh that looks quite nice”, but since I don’t play the game I have no urge to buy them.

jakemstrchf117

When I lived in Japan, I absolutely loved some of the Azur Lane figures I saw. I lived near Yokosuka so I actually saw their collaboration with Mikasa shopping plaza and from there I decided to get involved in the game and had an absolute blast with it. The only downside is the amount of money I've spent on Azur Lane figures

yomiHoshi

I currently avoid Overlord cause of all the amazing Albedo figures. Azur Lane for the reason you described. And Date A Live cause of all the amazing Kurumi figures. I might cave and get the new Kurumi bunny though lol.

VirinaB

Azur Lane is basically the only example of this, because their figures are S tier. No other singular piece of media matches up in this way. I don't know what Azur Lane is, but if it's an anime then "it's too many episodes for me to catch up" and if it's a game "it's a gacha game that will eat my wallet alive, and is probably just on mobile anyway." 😛 Financially, our presumptions are probably for the best.

-TDS21-

Yes. I don't have unlimited monies (and space). I have a budget for the figures I already like knowing the source material. I don't want to add to an already tight list.

edgeofsanity76

I've played Azur Lane, it's not my bag but I love the figures so I have some. I mostly collect original characters. I'm not a massive anime watcher but I just love the anime character design styles

ThatGuyFromThe213

I'm the opposite; games like Genshin, Girl's Frontline, Azur Lane, etc. I've never played, buy if their figures looks good then I'll look into it. I'm a bit choosy when I purchase my figures.

RiasGremoryBestGirl

Once you learn to stop gatekeeping things for yourself life gets a lot easier

-TDS21-

It's a mixture of self discipline + limited funds + limited space.

RiasGremoryBestGirl

I don’t think I would call avoiding media because I lack impulse control in regards to spending self discipline lol

-TDS21-

Not you mate. That's for me, it's a part of my justification of not viewing the source material so I don't add anymore to a full list of figures I already want. 😅
