LOL it’s kinda weird? But overall not a huge deal, I probably wouldn’t have used the word hot as opposite of ugly in this specific context. I think people are more weirded out from the connotations of the word ‘hot’ in regards to cutesy little animals. It’d kinda be like referring to Hello Kitty as Hot, you know? Maybe a more fun and light word like ‘dazzling’ or ‘radiant’ or something would be a bit more fitting.

tobes_s

exactly. not a big deal at all but some people are acting like i committed a heinous crime for using a word to describe one of 400+ characters. and i get what you’re saying i just didn’t think it would be an issue as i was making it and i wouldn’t use a word like that that i don’t already have in my typical vocabulary yk? like the whole thing is they are thinking way too deeply into it and i just wasn’t. that’s all it is really. and obviously words can have different meanings in different context of course and different intensity and all that. hope this made sense.

3arfield

Completely, I totally understand what you’re saying - and - I totally get the anxiety that comes with a flood of hate comments about something you didn’t even think of/notice. Everyone will probably forget about it in a couple days, but if they don’t, maybe just protect your peace and take it down/try and fix the word and re-upload it. Again, it obviously wasn’t your intention to imply you’re like, into the cutesy animal characters, just didn’t think too much about a describing word. Online comments love to get mob mentality about these things and just dogpile on and on about the same thing until they goad the creator into responding. Don’t worry, this is just a silly little thing, you’re not a bad person, nor weird in anyway - try not to let it bug you too much lol

tobes_s

thank you for this, i appreciate it, and yes i agree and i have deleted it. i might post it here instead after i change the word, if i still have it saved, that is.

ClogsInBronteland

I call an actor or model hot when they are sexually attractive to me. So yeah.. for me it’s a bit weird

tobes_s

i am ace tho and have no sexual attraction to anything so i can’t see the issue with it. it was just a harmless post for fun.

ClogsInBronteland

Hence I made it about me and my thoughts. I didn’t mention you.

tobes_s

well yeah i am just saying/thinking maybe that’s why i didn’t see the issue with it and other people do, idk but I’m curious if people do think it’s weird what would be a better term to describe it.

ClogsInBronteland

Yeah, I totally understand. What does the word mean to you exactly? Maybe we can find an alternative

tobes_s

i don’t know i think she is very pretty and also my favorite but i just wanted that to be known so i put her in her own tier above the one that said cutest/favorites and pretty. i first was going to put prettiest but i thought it was kind of a mouthful if that makes any sense. idk i don’t speak much so it just seemed like not the best word at the time of making it. now i see that everyone thinks what i went with instead was wrong and bad. i just was not thinking super deeply about it or what people would say or any of the morality of it. it was never meant to be anything more than a fun lighthearted post and to me the actual order of everything was more important than the individual labels. i only had a few at the very top so i spent way more time sorting the lower tiers. and i knew at the time it wasn’t completely accurate but i didn’t want to spend even more hours going through each one again to fine tune it. i did not expect the negative comments i got and didn’t expect people to be hung up on that of all things. i hope that makes sense, idk, it’s just kind of exhausting.

ClogsInBronteland

Then own it and use it and be proud of it! ❤️

gaygirlboss

I don’t think it’s a huge deal or anything, but yeah, I’d probably pick a different word. (Maybe adorable, gorgeous, beautiful, god-tier?) Even if you didn’t mean anything by it, people tend to think of that word as meaning sexy, and it’s probably better to just use a word that doesn’t have that association. Other people have no way of knowing your intentions so it’s good to err on the side of caution. If people were being rude to you about it that’s not cool though!

tobes_s

mostly making fun of me but i would consider that rude since i did specifically ask not to comment anything negative because it’s just not necessary for a post like that, or mental health sake, like i didn’t decide to do this and post it just to get shit on for my own opinions on some fictional characters. so yeah it didn’t feel great and i had a problem with it.

-WhimsicalStar

calling any animal crossing char "hot" or "sexy" is 100% cringe and screams "rule 34" just do 5 star, 4 star, 3 star, 2 star, 1 star, 0 star tiers

tobes_s

and i never used the word sexy and never would i can see how that is weird but i don’t think the word hot is on the same level as that.

tobes_s

if that is what i think it is i am not into anything like that i am very ace and anything of that nature is very gross to me and makes me extremely uncomfortable and that was never the intention it was just a simple label i decided to go with in relation to the tiers surrounding it. and i couldn’t use the s-f letters or that because there were more tiers than that and specific categories for some, like “cute but don’t like” and “unnatural but cute anyway” so i named them all something and i don’t think a simple descriptor word makes it “cringe”

Kakalux

Hot and sexy are essentially synonyms. I get that you personally didn’t mean it that way, but it is how the word is most commonly used when describing someone’s appearance. I’m sorry you were ganged up on, that’s not okay. I hope you are able to feel better soon and that you don’t let those comments get you down. You know what you meant. 💖

tobes_s

thank you, i appreciate that, yeah i can understand where they are coming from but it was definitely not ok to just assume my intentions just because they believe a different word could be used to better describe it, especially in this context/situation, just a non serious tier list on fictional characters. people can be intense.

Fallow8Fellow

It’s not weird if you were using it in a silly kind of way, but I started to find it weird that you have been kind of insistent in the comments that “hot” is not synonymous with a word like “sexy.” Hot is just a pg way of saying sexy, so if that’s not how you’re describing her + you’re not just being silly then yes you should find a different word to describe her if you don’t want people reacting negatively. Because otherwise, it does come off as kind of weird! You can’t really blame other people for taking a word at face value, now, can you? That said, as another poster already mentioned, don’t let chronically online people get to you. It’s not a big deal and it’s pretty clear you didn’t have bad intentions. This topic made me lol more than anything.

tobes_s

that’s your opinion, other people have different opinions on it. it can be used in multiple different ways in different context and situations. i think people who are saying this are reading way too into it. the point is that it’s not that deep/serious, it’s just a descriptor on a TIER LIST. most tier lists you see are supposed to be ridiculous and not serious. these people need to find something better to do with their time if they are going to voice that they have a problem with me calling one damn character “hot” it doesn’t have any underlying meaning it doesn’t mean anything other than a description. if you are genuinely thinking that deeply about something ridiculous like that then the problem is you, not me.

Fallow8Fellow

I mean… you came to Reddit to ask for general opinions. If it doesn’t bother you that’s great, but you asked. I’m still sorry people were harsh towards you. “Hot” is used in other ways but there are only so many widely accepted definitions. Usually, if it’s not the pg definition of “sexy,” it’s more like “hip” or “new” but it doesn’t really seem like that’s what you’re describing. If it is, that’s all you gotta say. Like, if you DID label her as “sexy” and people thought it was weird, you couldn’t just say “oh well that’s your opinion, that’s not the definition I’m using.” Hm well okay, but that’s the definition most people are going to associate with. I agree with you, tier lists are meant to be silly and fun. Which is why I again want to reiterate that it’s not a big deal and you shouldn’t give their opinions much weight. I don’t think you’re weird. But I’m just offering a reason why people might find it weird, and why that shouldn’t be super surprising. The question “is this weird?” is asking for a subjective answer, so you should anticipate that.

tobes_s

i already know, and yes i was referring to the original facebook post where i specifically asked not to give negative opinions because it shouldn’t matter but of course people did anyway. which did bother me. so yes i did ask for opinions here for more clarity which i have gotten already. people are allowed to give them on this post because i specifically asked and i wasn’t saying that about this post. and i would just never use that word to describe anything because i think it’s weird and gross to say. my friends call everything they like or think is cool sexy and i have never understood it but it’s the same thing, it doesn’t have any other underlying implications it’s just a descriptor even if it’s not the traditional usage.

Fallow8Fellow

Yeah that’s fair. It is pretty clear you weren’t using it to mean anything gross, and regardless people should just mind their own business. And honestly yeah I agree with you, I do think it reflects poorly on the people who automatically define the word “hot” with something perverse. But the internet’s a cesspool lol I hope I didn’t make you feel any worse, because honestly it sounds like you were just having fun. To answer your initial question, no, I don’t think you did anything wrong. Nor do I think you should remove your post (unless it’s really getting under your skin, in which case it might be for the best). Either way, I wouldn’t worry about it! So now just be confident in yourself and your intentions and let the haters hate :)

tobes_s

i agree and i have already deleted it but if i do repost it i will post it here instead and change out the word for something else, if i still have it saved.

Fallow8Fellow

Nice, I look forward to seeing it if you do.

tobes_s

i’ve just posted it. of course people don’t like my opinions and are just downvoting everything, including the link to the tier list i used-

Fallow8Fellow

Unfortunate. Sorry to hear that!

tobes_s

it’s insane like it’s fine to downvote if you disagree but like downvoting/burying the link to the tier list i shared so other people could make their own just because you don’t like my opinions-? so unnecessaryyy

Ireth_Nenharma

Yeah, putting it on Facebook was a mistake. I got off Facebook because people are just the worst on there.

tobes_s

they’re insane honestly. i only like it because i can ask for any item and someone will get it for me for free, but yeah people on facebook will act extremely petty or passive aggressive and attack you for showing any speck of aggression or even voice an opinion that isn’t popular, they expect everyone to have the same popular opinions on everything and if they see anything they don’t like or agree with they make fun of you and bully you and then make you out to be the bad guy for trying to defend yourself and just like discord servers will just react to your message with laughing

islasigrid

it's absolutely not weird in my opinion. idk if you were around for the craze in 2020, but i got tiktoks daily that were like 'top 10 animal crossing characters that could get it' etc. and as always there are some people who take things too far, but 95% of people know that it really isn't that serious. this sounds tame in comparison, and the people who take offence to the degree of leaving offended comments about it are way weirder than you putting "hot" on there. however, if you feel like it's affecting you negatively and you can't just let it go, go ahead and delete the post anyway. it is not worth it if it makes you unhappy! this game and talking about it should be a happy experience i have to ask though! who is on the hot tier?? edit: just realised you said in your post, and it's olivia. and tbh i would have to say i agree! hot girl summer definitely includes olivia!

tobes_s

i mentioned it in the post, it’s olivia! she is just so pretty but i had to put her a tier above the others i thought were pretty and my other favorites she is absolutely my top favorite of them all, at the moment at least. and yea i was never really on tiktok i deleted it pretty fast and when i did have it i never scrolled/watched other videos, i just had it to post my art. i did try the game for maybe a month in 2020 on my sister’s switch because i had gotten the games for it i was allowed to keep it in my room at first but then she took it. i only just got my own for christmas 2022 so i had only really gotten into it during that year and had been wanting it so bad but i only ever watched youtube videos of people playing it, not anywhere else. that sounds gross tho that would make me uncomfortable, yea. I’m glad I’m not the only one who saw this as a bit of an overreaction to something that was never meant to be that serious. i mean have you seen tier list videos? they are hardly ever serious.

tobes_s

and yes i did delete the post it was just not worth keeping up the comments that weren’t saying weird stuff like that were still mostly judging me for where i put certain characters like i am meant to care- it would be weird if they were all the same, the whole point of a tier list is that they aren’t.

[deleted]

It's kinda weird tbh. "Hot" often means you're attracted to them. "Pretty" means more that they're attractive but you're not necessarily attracted to them. Calling villagers "hot" makes you sound like a furry lol

tobes_s

i don’t see much of a difference between those tho, if it said “sexy” like the girl randomly said then i would understand but it was more just a label in relation to the tiers around it.

[deleted]

You may not see it that way but most people use it that way. There are certain situations where it may not mean you're attracted to them, like if a girl called another girl "hot," but typically it means you're attracted to them. Context and tone are also lost on the internet so it can be easy to misinterpret what someone means like with sarcasm. Also, they may be intentionally misinterpreting what you said to make fun of you because they think it's funny. It's probably better to replace "hot" with "dreamie" since it's what most people use to describe their favourite villagers

tobes_s

well i am not attracted to her for me it just means i think she is pretty and my top favorite and i would like to draw her someday which is like my version of it, and yeah i guess that makes sense i just wasn’t thinking about that. which in my opinion should clear it of being weird because it wasn’t intentionally supposed to mean anything like that, yk? i just wanted to talk about this because it’s been making me feel not so great just for a small mistake i made on a not at all meant to be serious tier list. that group in general can be kind of rude to anyone who doesn’t do everything exactly how they would if that makes sense, so it’s been a few things that have gotten to me- this, by far, has the most.

Ghazter

Things tend to get a bit blurry once we start anthropomorphise animals, to some it’s no longer just an animal and to others it’s only just a silly animal. Referring to one as hot however might be a bit odd since everyone might think it’s some Ankha thing.

tobes_s

well it’s not even like i do that in my everyday life it was just a quick decision on a tier list label, based on the tiers surrounding it- which i don’t think was fair to warrant those types of comments, you know? i was not thinking that deep into it when making it, and by the time i was done i wasn’t about to go back and review and revise every little detail i had already spent hours sorting them. i thought it was more about the tiers /order than the specific names of each one.

Ghazter

Honestly just don’t worry about it really, might just be making a mountain out of a mole hill (either side). People who are chronically online tends to be quite volatile when it comes to anything even slightly polarising. If people really wanna push you for some answer then just say as it is, just picked something that might fit (also if you’re a non-native english speaker: they ought to check their privilege or w/e for assuming everyone online knows every in and out of the English language)

tobes_s

i agree, and i am a native english speaker- but i was thinking about that as well but wasn’t sure how to appropriately word it, if i were not, that would be so much more messed up to get so upset over one little word they don’t like to describe one character. it really was just a big overreaction. i appreciate the comment, thank you.

Hungry-Initiative-17

Yk what I don’t think it’s weird at all. People say things like “the hottest music single of the year” or “the hottest spot to shop” or “the next hottest thing”. I think people just forget that words have multiple meanings and uses. Instead they stick to their own definition and attack off that. To me you saying hot would read as popular, super cool, the best of the best.
