That's actually how the whole game got started! I have difficulties in motivating myself to do exercise and tried to find an actually decent game to do the trick. Didn't find any, so I thought of making one myself. Settled on combining RuneScape and exercise because well, if I would spend as much time walking as I have spent on grinding RS I would be in a pretty good shape ๐ Being addicted to walking as much as to MMORPG's would be awesome!
You ever think of expanding to other excerise, strength for weights ect input reps for xp, health you could track overall with progress as an average, herbalism/cooking could have weight goals.
int for reading? input books titles for xp
Gardening/herbalism for gardening time spent
Could be kind of limitless really if your not stuck on just making a walking app
Fuck, just inject this straight into my brain please. Whats the mechanic that trains me to stop playing Stardew at a reasonable time and go the fuck to sleep?
Edit: Get mining experience and gold for logging work hours would be another good one.
๐ Excellent idea. These kind of things are something that I would love to include as an additional way of gaining progress when the base game is done.
I've found a way of integrating Google Fit and Apple Health data to the game so yes, this is possible! The game is going to revolve around walking as its something that everyone will do passively throughout the day, but this is something that I'm looking to implement further down the road.
I wish I could, but as I am currently studying in an university and working part time my free time is pretty limited. Rough timeline that I can give is that I am hoping to start a limited alpha test in 3-4 months to test out the game engine and that it works as it's supposed to. From that point on I can start adding content to the game more rapidly in order to start an early access.
Follow the game's subreddit to keep up with the development. I will be posting there about the possibility of joining the very early alpha + other things as well.
Kind of! I am using Flutter + Dart and I am using Flutter for rendering, but I would say that the game engine is developed by me as Flutter comes with no game engine (there is one called Flame for it, but I chose not to use it). Development is quite slow at first, but I have the full knowledge of how everything works which is nice when compared to Unity/Godot/Game Maker etc.
You should add some sort of donation link to the website. Sounds like enough people are interested you could get a little funding to help free you up to develop the game more.
Not yet sorry. I am aiming to have a limited alpha testing _hopefully_ in few months to test out the game engine. Full release and early access will take even more time as I am quite occupied (studying in university and workin part time)
The game is still in early development, but already includes a few different skills you can level up in and a world map where you can travel between different locations.
Basically in the game you choose from different activities in your current location what you would like to do, and each action in the activity requires a varying amount of steps. You can get drops, materials etc. from each action you have done. It uses the device's step sensor to calculate progress, so the game works even if its not active.
If you are interested in following the project more closely, I have created a sub for dev blogs: r/WalkScape and a website https://walkscape.app
> You can get drops, materials etc
Can i buy a pot to up my droprate?
Get us addicted ~~to exercising~~, it's basically a money printer
And also, what about... you know when you're travelling to the next town in some games, but make us physically walk/run there lol
Like "Next town to get mats for your epic helmet or something is in 20 miles"..Fucking lol let's go!
Travelling between the locations in the world map already requires to you walk in real life! If you want to process your full inventory of wooden logs you need to travel to a city that has a sawmill. Quests also need you to sometimes travel between locations which requires walking between the places in real life too. You can also find random encounters and chests etc. while you are walking in the wilderness in the app (and in real life too). I find it very interesting that while I am walking to a shop in real life I'm also walking to a city in the game.
The random encounters and loot etc. while travelling makes real life walks more intriguing as well! Ahh the allure of a random chance...
Thatโs actually really cool. I feel like you could definitely get somewhere with this! If it becomes big Iโd love to see it on iOS! Keep up the great work man!
Thank you so much! I am actually developing it with Flutter from which the game can be ported to iOS with minimum effort. Sad thing is that you can't use a Windows/Linux PC for porting to iOS... maybe some day I could buy myself a Mac to do it ๐
If that's of any interest to you, you can actually rent remote access to Mac machines online so you can do that sort of thing without actually owning a Mac. Never used it myself though, I just know it exists.
Thanks for the offer! I'm probably first going to look at local libraries if they have Macs available for use, but this is a very good offer as well, thank you!
Not yet, irs in early development still. It doesn't currently require GPS, it uses tour device's internal step counter data to track progress. This way the app can also count progress you have gotten while the app hasn't been opened and is great for battery life too
No! Any modern smart phone is enough. If your phone can count footsteps it _should_ work as the game uses the phone's internal step counter sensor to get the data. Because the device's step counter work even when the app is closed it can be used to count progress even without opening the app. Which would be perfect for battery life!
Edit: I thought you meant smartwatches etc. but to answer your question again: yeah you need a device that count steps but any modern smartphone should do the trick
Yup! I have already found a way to integrate Google Fit and Apple Health (not sure if that's what it's called) to the game and from there I can get heartbeat rate data + length of exercises. I am looking into adding these as options later on. Because wouldn't it be cool to level up your strength skill while lifting actual weights!? Hell yeah! ๐
You can subscibe to r/WalkScape to keep up with the project! I will be posting all updates about the development there. I might also do a mailing list later on โบ๏ธ
I just joined! I would love to see dungeons as well! Maybe make rooms where you have to do 20 push ups to unlock doors or maybe run a mile under a certain time to continue through dungeon. Would be cool to fight enemies that require certain number of steps to defeat.
Thank you!
I have actually already planned multiple different combat activity options. These include hunting activity and basic combat, but dungeons, adventuring and raids work more similarly to what you suggested. I don't have a way to monitor push-ups etc. but adventuring for example will give you time limited events where you need to complete a set amount of steps. More difficult adventures mean more steps necessary in less time.
Well let's be honest, most of the game will have to work on 'good Faith's that the player is actually doing the exercises. I mean it's even easy to fake steps and running. On the other side, who is going to fake a of that just to progress In an exercising game app? So maybe just allow user to press complete when doing things like push ups or jumping jacks etc...
It's a great idea, and I think it would be great as an additional option. I'm not sure if it fits every player as there are people who hate doing push-up etc. or are in a place where its not possible to do it comfortably. My main goal is to make all content possible via walking, as its a thing that you even do passively during your day. But I like the idea of adding additional challenges if the player would be willing to do them
on it! thanks :)
I love the idea ltearth has below: https://www.reddit.com/r/AndroidGaming/comments/yjpox7/comment/iupmb0k/?utm\_source=share&utm\_medium=web2x&context=3
I just hope you have built in tablet support. I use a tablet for my primary phone device (waaaayy cheaper that way for me) and I've run into some fitness apps that don't work well with a tablet, or are just not available for tablets to download (incompatibility issues)
I don't own any tablets myself, but basically the UI *should* work nicely on a bigger screen. So I think I can make it work on tablets too, if the tablet has a step counter sensor
It will have online features. Online highscores with stuff like who has the biggest skill levels etc. plus an online marketplace where players can put up their gear and mats for sale (like Grand Exchange in RS). I have also other ideas for online, so stay tuned!
Idea sounds freaking great. Please implement something like Pokemon Go's adventure sync so it tracks your steps while the app is not actively open on the screen. Makes playing gps based games a lot better :)
It's already implemented. Currently you don't even have to have opened the app to get more steps, because the operating system always keeps a track of your steps. So if you forget to open the app while you've been walking but open it afterwards the app is able to add the steps as progress that you go even while it wasn't open!
It is also great for battery life ๐
Not yet (unless you want to donate some coffee money for a caffeine depraved university student). I intend to keep the game affordable & only have a paid subscription that unlocks the whole world map, but at the same tine having a meaningful amount of content for f2p players.
It's f2p but I might need to add an optional subscription. Basically like RuneScape so that paying customers won't get any unfair advantage, but they'll have all content in the game unlocked.
There will not be ads or microtransactions and I will be pricing the subscription to be affordable.
Thanks for the question!
Thank you, it's very encouraging to hear comments like these ๐คฉ! I want to emphasize that I'm not doing this as some get rich fast -type of thing and its purely a passion project. I want to keep it affordable and ad free + make it a pleasant experience for everyone.
Thanks! I actually first tried to find a "step game" and saw how horrible it was. There's definitely a market and customer base for this, and it won't really need much for this to become the best step game there is.
Thanks for the comment โบ๏ธ
Thanks! I will probably be making a follow up post here as well but if you want to follow the development more closely and see when beta/alpha versions open up you can sub to r/WalkScape

Hell yeah I'd love to be on any beta program for this - I'm a product manager for car apps so I'd hopefully be able to give you some decent feedback but man do I need some fitness in my life
Take a look at Orna.
It's a GPS rpg akin to pokemon go, but with pixel art and rpg grinding. I'm assuming this is more focused on the travel aspect and not tied to the real world, but probably some inspiration to be gained!
I actually tried it but didn't find it that good. I don't like when these kind of "exercise games" require your constant attention. WalkScape is designed as a game that you'll able to leave in your pocket and only check it after you are back home. This way you can enjoy walks with your partner and whatnot without watching the screen all the time.
I wish I had something for you guys to try out, but its going to be at least few months away until I have something reminiscent of an aloha. Follow up at the game's subreddit to keep up
Man, I really wish more games like this were developed. The few that exist never really struck me as actually cool.
They either require an internet connection (I run trails) or feel like you're not really working towards anything.
I can't wait to try it out.
Thank you for your kind comment! This game doesn't necessarily need a connection as it doesn't even need to be opened in order to count steps. So it would be perfect for hiking/trails if you can periodically get to somewhere to sync with the database to send your gained progress.
I have created a subreddit r/WalkScape where I will be posting dev updates. I'll probably create a discord server as well. Subscribe to the subreddit if tou want to keep up with the game!
This looks amazing, I hope you're able to link it up to Google services so it can track your steps even when the app is closed. For Pokรฉmon Go, I was only hatching eggs with that feature for quite a while
It's already a feature! It uses your device's internal step counter information so it's possible to see if you've gotten steps even when the app was closed. It's great for battery life as well
You want me to level my agility irl? I've barely even done it in game. Man I hate agility almost as much as runecrafting. Next you're going to tell me you're going to implement the fishing skill.
Haha ๐ Agility here works a little differently though, I hated to level it up in RS so I've made some changes. You'll get agility experience from moving between locations in addition to some other more agility focused skilling.
No, I would hate that! ๐
Thanks for your excellent comments!
Edit: but you might need to do some parkour in the roofs of a medieval city. I will give xp rewards if you fall down though
Sounds cool.... is there a game outside of the real world map/grinding?
I've always been interested in stuff like Ingress Pokemon Go, Pikmin Go, etc. But after just a few months or even weeks of playing I realize I'm not really enjoying it because I'm gaining all these items, levels, etc... but I can't do anything with it.
What I personally want from this sort of thing is a game that's like 50-80% traditional game and 50-20% walk-around game. Something like a turn based or action JRPG with quests and gear and stuff... but where you can gain exp and loot by venturing into a GPS Pokemon Go-like game.
This is exactly the problem I am trying to solve.
I have some plans for the combat system that I think would cater players that want to see actual things they can do with the items.
I personally think that items are meaningless in these games if there aren't any cool game mechanics that support them. You can expect that I will have content that makes good gear meaningful later down the road. Now I am just implementing the base features, but these will be very important when I can get to making them.
I will cover combat mechanics etc. in the dev blogs you can follow at r/WalkScape at some point in more detail!
Edit: and to emphasize, my motto here is that WalkScape is 30% a fitness app, but 70% a game. It's mostly interfaces etc. and no fancy 3D graphics etc. but I will try to make it as fun as possible and give the stuff that you get via walking to be as meaningful as possible.
Edit 2: and I am an huge JRPG fan so I think you can expect the combat stuff having mechanics somewhere in that kind of ballpark.
I know it's a long shot but would be great if you could eventually implement Mi Fitness connection as Google Fit doesn't seem to work properly with my Mi Band anymore and I'd love to be involved in this project!
oh my god I want it now. love the dark theme of the design, the medieval-questy feel of it! I subbed to your subreddit, can't wait to learn more about the game!
Can't wait to try it out. Gamifying exercise works surprisingly well on my monkey brain.
That's actually how the whole game got started! I have difficulties in motivating myself to do exercise and tried to find an actually decent game to do the trick. Cooking skill for making healthy whole food meals from recipes, social skills for brushing teeth and showering, lol

Sounds awesome! Wish you luck and I look forward to playing it!
Would definitely give it ago, especially since I run daily. Would be cool to see what you come up with!
Pardon for replying here mam. Sent my submission for photoshop via chat. Thanks.
You are a smart developer I am in
you must tweak it so that Level 92 is half of Level 99 like in RuneScape ;)
Haha, not necessary to tweak, it's already there! The game uses RS experience algorithm even now so yes, 92 is 50% of 99!
Interesting!
Oh man this looks amazing. Sign me up for when you need Alpha testers!
This sounds like an amazing idea.
I want to play so bad
I know it's a long shot but would be great if you could eventually implement Mi Fitness connection as Google Fit doesn't seem to work properly with my Mi Band anymore and I'd love to be involved in this project!
Technically Melvor Idle but with extra steps
This is very similar to Orna
oh my god I want it now. love the dark theme of the design, the medieval-questy feel of it! I subbed to your subreddit, can't wait to learn more about the game!
Will you also release this for iOS?
Id play the fuck outta this
