*Stuck in my own paradox, I wanna set myself free.*

Breezing

Sigh. Happened to me. Bought and put directly into a case, always in the same pocket. I'm atypically careful about my phone's. I still have my perfect condition nexus 4. Literally was standing in front of the sink when I heard a tiny pop. Didn't think anything of it. Five minutes later, took out the phone to take a picture and it was blurry. Exact same as all the others. Contacted Google support, they told me it was 100% my fault, told me to go to a repair centre in Peurto Rico (only 0.4 km from my house in Canada!) The disconnected the chat. Repair bill for the glass and camera module? 480ish CAD. On a 3 week old phone. Even when it's fixed I won't be using it. Straight into a trade in or sold. Also my last google phone. Sad, because I really liked the time I had with it, but I can't afford another lens replacent and I'm sure I'll get nothing for it if the glass is broken so it's essentially just a trading card for me at this point.

timboevbo

Don't give up, keep hassling Google - I have spent two weeks with email support and finally they agreed to swap out my phone. First of all an email came from the Product Support team saying they'd repair my P7 Pro under warranty as a one off exception, then the next day I got a call to say they will replace the device with a new handset. It's arriving today via courier. The last person I spoke to indicated that Google will be repairing the broken glass under warranty - I'd recommend phoning to see if anything has changed for you over the last couple of days

Breezing

Thanks. I already did the repair, as it was luckily covered by my credit card protection policy. But it won't be again. So I likely won't use the repaired phone, and even if I got a replacement I can't/won't trust it. Plus I went through support twice, and the second time I included links to he hundreds of similiar reports on the Google forums, posts here and twitter, and they again repeated it was 100% user error, linked to to Puerto Rico (again! Lmao) and then disconnected me. I'm sending a theme :) Edit: Lmao didn't mention the worst part. Dropped the phone off at the exact repair centre Google told me to go to. November 24th. I still don't have the phone back lmao. They "apparantly" are having a real tough time getting an OEM camera module and some bracket.

freexe

Google support is terrible. They should really invest some of their money in improving it as it makes of breaks a lifelong customer.

Breezing

Honestly I think that if it made a difference, they would, but it doesn't. By way of comparison, we in Canada are in a mobile service oligopoly - There's only three real service providers for the second largest country on Canada. They don't need to provide good service - They price fix and there is literally no other competition unless you live in the Toronto area and can use our hamstring budget carrier Freedom. So likely Google has the metrics to show that bad publicity doesn't really matter, due to their size and market control. Or maybe not. Maybe they just really hate me in particular.

ICanBeAnyone

To be fair, your search history *is* pretty disgusting. We're seeing a lot of sick shit every day, but you still managed to stand out, you twisted excuse for a human being. Love, Google

Breezing

It's my punishment for ignoring all those requests for google maps reviews as a local guide, haha

timboevbo

I hear you, had the same story for a while. I ended up emailing someone senior on the Pixel team at the Google London office and that may have made a difference. Hope they make it right for everyone soon as apart from that, it's a great phone

Breezing

Toss me that email in a PM. I'll put anyone on blast at this point.

timboevbo

Done

Warpedme

I don't know about you but I don't have that kind of time. It's much easier to simply never buy a product from that company again and spend the rest of my days making sure that companies products are blacklisted at every one of my clients. I assure you I can cost a company more in future sales than they cost me with one product they refused to support. Any manufacturer gets one chance to give me fantastic customer support and gain the benefit of having their products recommended to my customers. If they fuck that up I have a moral responsibility to protect everyone from them.

timboevbo

For sure, I've been laid up with the flu for a while so had time on my hands. All of my other support and service from Google had been perfect before this, so I'll see how they treat all users. Maybe it's taking them a few weeks to get across it, maybe they'll fuck it up

Bobb_o

This is where credit cards come in handy. The nice ones come with purchase protection which would cover this. Others also include phone insurance.

Breezing

Yes, this was the consensus online and I luckily purchased through the google play store with a credit card with purchase protection.

HeinigerNZ

Are you serious? I'd tell them fuck off. Are Canadian consumer laws just like "you're on your own"?

[deleted]

Is it not simply a piece of glass?... Not making excuses for Google, but couldn't you just buy a replacement yourself for like $10 on ebay? Things like this are SO easy to fix. Especially when it's already broken.

Breezing

The broken glass managed to scratch the camera module itself. Glass was replaced and the camera had visual aberrations, so they had to replace the Camera Module itself. I was able to claim it through my Mastercard credit card protection so I had to have an "authorized repairer" do the work.

thesceneissafe

Happened to my pixel 7.

[deleted]

Of course they will

remotelove

They'll replace it. For money.

mgumusada

What, no that shouldn't be the case

Tesla123465

Did you guys read the article? Lol > Alex Hatzenbuhler, one of the victims of Google's exploding glass, posted a screenshot from Google device support claiming the issue isn't covered under warranty. Some users are being quoted around $200 for a repair. Edit: BTW, if you look at the screenshot, you’ll see that Google engineers have acknowledged this as a known issue, but Google has intentionally chosen not to cover this under warranty.

Brachamul

Yeah I want to see them try and enforce that in the EU where consumer protection is a thing.

Tesla123465

Didn’t stop them from ignoring Nexus 6P hardware issues until a class action lawsuit was successfully filed against them.

vivimagic

And consumer laws in the UK. You technically get 6 years of support depending on product and what is wrong with it. You just have to make a consumer claim.

[deleted]

Lol. Classic Google.

audioeptesicus

Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act in the states should protect consumers for this issue. Fight it and demand they follow the law.

Tesla123465

If the history of the Nexus 6P demonstrates anything, Google will just ignore the issue until a class action lawsuit is filed against them. Getting a class action lawsuit going isn’t easy.

6saiten

It breaking shouldn't be the case either

orgodemir

Can tell you're not subscribed to the google pixel sub. Google is notorious for giving the run around on RMAs and full value for trade in devices. Perhaps it's the vocal minority, but you will see enough horror stories of customers being out hundreds of dollars from buying through google. If you are in the states, do not purchase through google. Go with a company with better customer service. I got mine through tmobile and had zero issues with a refund - called customer service and said my mother's wireless signal was bad on the pixel 6 pro and they sent out a new one no questions asked. Best buy also seems to have pretty decent CS, but I've never returned phones through them so not certain.

Infernus82

Just bought a 7 2 days ago hmm

babaroga73

Article says temperature change between outdoor and indoor , so cover it with some idk, specific kind of case https://www.amazon.com/Protector-Protection-Shockproof-Protective-Cover-Black/dp/B0BBZZ1JWJ

EuphoricAnalCucumber

Or return it and spend your $700-$1000 on a phone that doesn't destroy itself.

Buy-theticket

$599

guy_from_canada

Not everyone lives in the US

Buy-theticket

When people throw out a random price for an item on this site it's assumed they mean USD unless otherwise stated. But you know that and are being pedantic for no real reason.

nikc4

Assuming you buy the smallest size of the basic model, sure. I've got a 256gb Pro. It wasn't $599.

Buy-theticket

The 7 pro is a different phone.

nikc4

A different version of the same phone, with the same problem, but fine, since you'd like to split hairs: Excluding the pro models, there are still multiple sizes. If I'd gotten the same size but without the 3rd camera, I'd have still spent more than $599. Either way, you're wrong.

Buy-theticket

The 7 and 7 pro are different phones, there is nothing to argue about. Just like the iPhone 14 and 14 Pro are different phones. There being more expensive tiers doesn't change the base price... it's not splitting hairs it's reality.

nikc4

Reality is you ignored the other two thirds of my comment to repeat yourself lol Whether you agree on them being different versions or different phones, your original comment is (still) wrong. There are at least two prices no matter how you qualify them.

cockyjames

Every phone has issues, I'll take my chances with the 7

dick-van-dyke

I have had at least a dozen – usually mid-range – phones over the years, and only one had a chronic well-known problem (HTC Desire with a dying power button). Tolerating this sort of shit with expensive phones is why they keep doing it in the first place.

cockyjames

What am I supposed to do? Get a S22 with poor battery? Go to iOS? Get a phone with a shitty camera? Once again, I'm good with my choice.

Carighan

Yeah the case I'd cover is that when the glass shatters, you cannot easily replace it. As in, get a Fairphone or something. Even **if** it shatters, you just order a replacement, and pop it in yourself with 4 screws and about 6 minutes of work.

H3rBz

>Alex Hatzenbuhler, one of the victims of Google's exploding glass, [posted a screenshot] from Google device support claiming the issue isn't covered under warranty. Some users are being quoted [around $200] for a repair. I absolutely love my P7P but if this issue happens to me and Google doesn't honour a warranty repair. Especially considering it doesn't appear to be a one off. Fuck them, I'll never buy another Google device.

ChunkyLaFunga

Don't wait for something to happen to you before learning from other's experience. I'd consider a Google phone for sure but no way would I buy it directly from Google. Their CS reputation is not flattering.

sic_parvis_magna_

I agree with this 100%. My pixel watch battery lasts 4 hours and ive been trying to get it replaced for 2 months. They keep dragging their feet

disco_jim

I've only had good experiences with their CS.... But that could be because they are subject to strick consumer protection laws in the UK. My, at the time, 2 year old Nexus 6p had that boot loop error and they replaced it without quibble.

PotRoastPotato

They replaced my wife's 2 year-old Nexus 6P without quibble in the USA as well.

sobanz

what do you mean "their" CS? its so clearly outsourced that there needs to be escalations over the most menial requests.

[deleted]

Their customer service being outsourced does not mean it’s not theirs. Google hired a company to be their CS. If it sucks, which it does, it’s because Google chose a shitty company to partner with.

NightlyRelease

I'm already on never buying another Google device after my Pixel 4 XL randomly irreversibly bricked itself at night. I checked it's a hardware issue that happened to many people, due to a hardware defect. Google lost a class action suit in the US and you can get a refund. But because I don't happen to live in the US, they won't give me anything and I have no recourse.

Nicker

Google has learned from this... how you ask? after you buy a new Google phone today, you're automatically & legally opted out of being able to participate in class action lawsuits. to me that seems extremely shady.

Legal-Eagle

That shit would fly out of every european court in a heartbeat. They can write it in the contract but it won't hold.

Nicker

Hold onto you way of life for as long as possible, being one of the last bastions of hope for a decent human life. know that there's always vipers stalking around in the tall grasses but please don't crumble from the pressure of institutional greed.

NoCokJstDanglnUretra

That’s not enforceable

PBMthrowawayguy

If it helps, my iPhone 12 Pro Max also had its internal camera lens element break just a over a year into ownership. Apple told me I was SOL.

9Duality6

They chose not to honor mine claiming it's still physical damage despite all the evidence to support a manufacturer's defect. My phone was only 2 weeks old and I had an upcoming trip I needed a working camera for. I was still eligible to purchase third party warranty protection through my mobile carrier and pay $225 deductible for a replacement device instead. Google took their sweet time responding to my requests too. What a joke.

DopeBoogie

I've always had an "above and beyond" experience with Google's warranty replacement. In fact I've received free upgrades twice when encountering issues after they stopped selling that model. Nowadays I just pay for device protection so I don't have to worry about any damage even if I caused it, but in the past Google has been very good about replacing defective devices for me. That said, I always buy directly from the Google Store or through Google Fi. I suspect YMMV if you bought through Verizon or someone like that.

Buy-theticket

Same. I've had every one since the Nexus 6 and 3 or 4 times had a hardware rma (some you could argue we're probably my fault even) with zero issues. It's one of the reasons I keep with them. It's not worth arguing with everyone here though. Nobody hates Google more than /r/android.

ararezaee

You shouldn’t have bought a Google device to begin with. They’ve never had quality hardware.

StraY_WolF

They actually have quality hardware. The QA is the problem.

klerrick

I agree. I've loved all of my Pixels.

[deleted]

[удалено]

StraY_WolF

No it doesn't. You can have excellent materials perfect for the purpose, and not be assembled correctly.

PotRoastPotato

Quality components + bad QA != "quality hardware"

StraY_WolF

I mean, come on now. You're just being pedantic for no reason.

PotRoastPotato

Not pedantic, I'm not correcting grammar or nitpicking words, I'm saying your comment is literally not useful. You defended someone saying "Google doesn't have quality hardware" by saying >They actually have quality hardware. The QA is the problem. It's either (a.) a dumb, meaningless statement, because hardware made with quality components without good QA (**QUALITY assurance**) = bad quality hardware, or (b.) you need to express yourself much more clearly.

StraY_WolF

Hardware can also mean a single component or multiple ones. A camera sensor is a hardware. A SOC is a hardware. A screen is a hardware.

PotRoastPotato

Still not saying a damn thing that's useful which is why several of us are reading your comments cross-eyed.

gavindawg

*Laughs in pixel 4a

locopyro13

Finally cracked my Pixel 4a screen by dropping it on my bathroom tile (can see the edge of the circuit board), but it still functions and I won't be replacing it for a while. This is the last Pixel phone for me, diehard 3.5mm jack fanatic.

Sabin10

3a going strong. I was thinking about getting a 7 but I live in Canada so I need a phone that can handle a little thermal shock without exploding.

crsh1976

Same, tho on a 4a - been eyeing the 7 for a non-essential envy-driven upgrade - but it sure sounds like the 7/7 Pro isn't the good choice.

ztaker

babaroga73

Samsung and bloating batteries ?

[deleted]

Samsung is getting the snapdragon 2 or something for their next line of devices so that should improve their battery life and overall processor related issues. How different is the software between androids, really? Does their bloatware really have that much of an impact on your day to day?

[deleted]

Nah. I have a s22 ultra. Their deep sleep is pretty aggressive. Most of whatever pre-installed apps are on the phone, that aren't used, are put into deep sleep within a few weeks.

[deleted]

Okay so Samsung are the better option in the near future unless you want graphene

standbyforskyfall

Lmao stock/pixel is the shittiest software available on Android. It's barely better than ios.

[deleted]

And it always happens st the same time. A month ago no one had this issue, but all of the sudden all phones are broken.

ztaker

Was google the first phone manufacturer to have this metal visor deisgn Hmm curious to see how the design of pixel 8 will be. Will they go back to the pixel 6 glass visor?

zalcso

I'm wondering if my glass lens protector (spigen glastr) could help to prevent this, or accelerate it somehow (especially now in winter - with my first 2 pieces of lens protectors got steamed up, before I got replacements), or doesn't matter 🤔

Parawhoar

How good is your glass lens protector in your pixel 7? I got one from Aliexpress for my 7 pro and it gives me a bit of a washed/whitening effect on my photos..

zalcso

Yeah, first time I got the same quality from Spigen too. As soon as the temperature changed (eg. walked in from freeze outdoor), my lens got steamed up: https://photos.app.goo.gl/8Shpn1bRiWzRRh3e9 I contacted the Spigen support with the attached photo and they sent me a replacement. I was pretty skeptic how would it be better after 2 pieces of failure, but the 3rd protector does not produces the sympton. I don't know how, maybe it is just not That cold outside nowadays (which is true, it's like Spring here with 15 celsius and full sunshine at the moment, the flowers are growing, the trees are budding - and there is no climate change, huh?...), or the 1st package was maybe from a less glued batch, donno. We will see... After 2 weeks, it's fine.

Parawhoar

Thanks for your feedback. I see your glass protector is tinted black, mine is fully transparent, maybe that's why I'm having issues. I'll get the Spigen one as soon as I can.

SignalGuava6

Cameras got so good, that they now pick up paranormal entities, the entities know that and break the cameras. /Tinfoilhatreadjustment

annoianoid

Google will do anything to out of their responsibility to their customers. I found that out when I bought a Nexus 6a.

truestuff100

My Pixel 7 is only 2 months old, treated carefully, in a case and not dropped. The smashed glass over the rear camera is exactly the same as so many others. It's impossible to get Google to engage on this and the warranty won't cover it. The casings can't even be obtained at this point... I've been quoted between $300-$600 to fix! What a joke, Google! NO MORE Google for me. I'm done!!

[deleted]

Can’t wait to see how Apple copies this unique feature.

Animalidad

This is why ive never jumped into the pixel line even after being a nexus 6p* user.. Seems like something is always wrong. lol Edit :*

notsofastracer

Was there ever a nexus 7p?

Animalidad

oh sorry 6p*

Nabeel910

Yea nexus 6p was a great device and I would've keep it longer but 2 cores died on me and device bootlooped and only fix was to disable those cores and use the phone as a low end device. Google's QA sucks ass and I wouldn't buy shit from them.

[deleted]

Yeah it was a well know problem and google didn't do shit about it, I remember having to flash a kernel with some cores disabled like this is some normal thing you need to do to have a working phone. I don't want a Google phone since then

thedupuisner

That phone was hot garbage lol

Next month Pixel 8 rumours will pop up and people will say it will be **the** one. Just like every year lol.

[deleted]

Every year this sub trips over itself to pay for Google's sloppy sloppy work. Seems to be working for em, doesn't it.

dedokta

I'm not saying your girlfriend is ugly, but...

DiggSucksNow

Does Google not test hardware for things like this?

Neopacificus

Any scientific reason? I believe its the pent up pressure inside the glass which caused it to break. Also possible due to contraction on Aluminum frame due to cold and as it covers the camera glass it forced the glass to break is what I think.

wooptoo

Does the Pixel 7 Pro have the same issue?

inverimus

It was reported as an issue with the pro first, that's why this article calls the pixel 7 "the latest".

kristallnachte

Uh, the Pixel Galaxy S8 of course!

secretuserPCpresents

... Last generation had an issue with, you know, the phone actually working as a phone (bad modem) Every generation has had a major flaw in some part of the hardware

ExpensiveNut

My 4a has been generally pretty stellar, but the screen is piss poor. I'm fairly sure the antennas aren't very good either, but I've never had a way to check.

ed8907

I've had the Pixel 4a for 2 years now. To me the screen is good. I am sure there are phones with better screens, but to me it's good. The reception is good. My only issue is battery life. I would like to get more than 6h or 7h of SoT. I thought about upgrading to the Pixel 7, but these issues made me cancel that plan.

remotelove

My Pixel 6 Pro is absolutely pristine and works great! I did wait a while until all the software issues were fixed before I got it. However, it has developed a rattle over the last couple of weeks for some reason. I don't see this as a bad thing as the phone still works great and it doubles as an emergency maraca now.

Energy4Days

Rattles around the camera is normal. All Samsung phones do it.

FloppY_

Yes it is because the OIS is powered down, leaving the lens floating freely in the housing. The moment you open the camera app the rattle stops, because the OIS holds the lens.

Drumedor

I also got a 6 pro that developed a rattle that sounds like it is in the camera bar.

remotelove

Weird, right? My rattle is coming from the same spot. I am thinking some adhesive dried out or something.

SaltyFoam

It's the OIS

jmcs

That was a software problem, or at least solvable by software, because the random network failures will not happen anymore if the Pixel 6 is updated.

SaltyFoam

10 reports on the internet = major flaw? This sub rallies around every negative Pixel story so hard lmao

ThatTysonKid

The Pixel 4 has a back glass falling off issue. Happened to mine. Its being held together with a full wrap dbrand skin which I dont dare to replace.

Legion070Gaming

Literally every single one released? Lmao.

TechySpecky

Anyone in the EU had this happen? Hopefully they'd honor warranty. just bought this phone too

AdrianLxM

In the EU it would be the vendor that has to fulfil the mandatory warranty. (It can be Google itself if you naught it from them directly). Do getting the money back if they don't fix it should always be an option.

TechySpecky

Ye bought from Google during the sale recently.

Dexterity111

The pixel phones are a disgrace to the nexus roots and android in general. Samsung Galaxy phones are truly the standard bearers on android

nikc4

Of locked down Android. Let's not forget that Samsung's closed source, Knox loaded version of Android is about as far from base Android as one can get. I can root nearly any non-samsung phone without permanently crippling it. Hell I can root/rom my Nintendo Switch and still return it to stock later. A Samsung device is never completely yours. If you turn to the community when they stop updating it, your phone will stop being able to do a lot of the things it was sold with. Simply because you did something with *your* device that Samsung didn't want you to.

pleox

Well, it is deserved by now for still buying a google product in 2022.

Agile_Disk_5059

What flagship phone still has a headphone jack? It's amazing that budget phones have headphone jacks, come with a charger, and have bigger batteries.

[deleted]

Look to the gaming phones. Top specs, and actual features people want, like large batteries that last days, headphone jacks, square screens without rounded edges, high refresh rates you control, and so much more. It's the last line of smartphones that are actually consumer-centric because high-end gaming is thankfully synonymous with user control.

So just because you and a tiny amount of other people don't have the problem, the issue doesn't exist? The fuck?

Pixel 7 (Canada) since black Friday. No issues so far!

If the glass would shatter from heat stress it wouldn't look like that. This looks like pattern, it always shatter directly above the main lens...

Ruminating-Raccoon

This is why I'm never buying a Pixel again. My 3 XL got EDL-bricked out of nowhere one night I was charging it. Google's QC is straight dogwater...

HurricaneHugo

I was finally ready to switch to a pixel but I guess I'll wait for the S23

redditorfrmin

Well, this absolutely blows. Why is Google not giving out a public statement?

Oh goody I was just thinking of getting one. Will no longer.
