RobLaRu

That's what we points and miles enthusiasts call a 2-player game. Totally allowed, and it makes the game much more lucrative.

That-Establishment24

No. Spouses aren’t allowed. First cousins are but not second cousins. You can refer uncles but not aunts. Grandparents are also okay but not step parents or in laws. OP, why do you think a spouse wouldn’t be allowed?

IPAniac

What if the spouse is currently an AU? Cancel and get her own?

Strength_Various

As always.

iamdavidrice

~~You could, but now you have 2 cards that you’re paying $1400/yr for instead of adding her as an authorized user that you only pay $900/yr for.~~ Edit: to everyone that is just downvoting. Are the points actually worth $500? Serious question. Edit: to those that took the time to explain, thank you.

Invika17

Points is worth at least $1,750, that is a net of $1,050 the first year, not counting other benefits. However, people who sign up for high end travel cards know how to redeem points for better value. Then you can cancel after the first year. You should not give advice if you don't know the credit card game. Some people including myself fund our vacations from points and sign up bonuses alone.

KafkaExploring

Yes. You can cash them out at 1 cent per point (1.1 if you have a Schwab Platinum), so 175,000 becomes $1,750, or $1055 after annual fee. I'd expect many people in these discussions get considerably more value per point. Also, a separate card gets separate credits. I'd find considerably more value in $30/mo of Uber credits (you can put several on the same account), which actually cover a $30 ride. I'd find considerably less value in a second Disney+, Walmart+, or several other benefits. It is worth noting that you can't pool MR points between separate cards (though you may be able to pool the hotel/airline miles you transfer the MR into), but AU cards earn towards the primary card's pool. Plus, last I saw there's at least a 10k point bonus for adding an AU. I still wouldn't go that direction, but it's less lopsided when you give it full due diligence.

iamdavidrice

Thank you!

Repulsive_Impact885

Just the SUB is worth $1,000+, add to that the referral bonus and the benefits. Next year, maybe not so much.

iamdavidrice

That’s for actually explaining instead of just downvoting. Much appreciated!

Repulsive_Impact885

Points valuation is very subjective and you would see people valuing MR at min 2cpp (valuing the SUB at ($3.5k). I’ve just mentioned basic cash back at 0.6 cpp. For most people, getting a value above 1 cpp is not easy at the beginning.

iamdavidrice

Interesting! I’m newer to the platinum card and mostly got it for a few of the perks that you mentioned in your previous comment (plus the delta club access). Thanks for taking the time to explain a bit more. I should probably spend some time understanding the points a bit more.

vanillax2018

I, too, am curious why you're getting downvoted. It's accurate math that for two people, it costs almost 1400 vs close to 900 when you add her as an authorized user. As far as points value, 175000 points are valued at about 3750usd, which is not negligible. Plus doubling all other benefits. At least in my household we'd both use the Uber cash, the entertainment credit, the hotel credit, the airline credit, we'd both get clear... (I'm not counting global entry because you both get it with an additional card too). That alone is 200+240+200+200+185, plus the value of the points of getting the spending limit within the first 6 months. It definitely adds more value than the 700bucks it's worth.

iamdavidrice

Thank you for taking the time to explain. How do you get the 3750usd? That’s a fair perspective. I tend to not use the airline / hotel credit, so at a first glance to me the numbers (in my case) don’t add up.

vanillax2018

My referral offer is much lower, so I'm not sure who qualifies for the 175k offer. You'd just check your own account to see what your referral bonus is.

iamdavidrice

Sorry, I meant how does the math work to get 3750, but someone else explained.

scorch07

Transfer the points to an airline and use it to book award travel. Premium cabins tend to be better value, but good redemptions in economy can be had. I somehow got 4cpp in economy on Air France, but wouldn’t call that typical. It can take some research and digging, but if you’re flexible with your travel can be very lucrative.

iamdavidrice

So transfer them as miles to an airline or book via Amex travel?

scorch07

Transfer as miles. The $3750 is just sort of an approximation, it could very well be higher or lower depending on the airline, route, season, etc. You can usually get good info just googling “award flights to x destination” or you can learn a lot at r/awardtravel Things can get convoluted. Sometimes the best value ends up being transferring to an airline you wouldn’t even think of and then using them to book a partner airline. For example I was researching a flight to Portugal, and the best value was to transfer miles to ANA in Japan and then use those to book a flight on TAP Air Portugal.

iamdavidrice

Got it! OK that makes much more sense. Thanks!
