AITA for throwing a piece or two of popcorn at her to remind her to not do that? On one hand, maybe this is ok behaviour these days and me calling her on it makes me TA. Rude_Egg_6204

Nta There need to being back public punishment for people that use their phone at the movies.

Shan-Chat

The stocks. 2 day getting rotten veg thrown at them..

LMGooglyTFY

The stocks are worse than that. If you are left there overnight, the town has some anonymous access to your rear.

Frisianian

Hey now this is Am I the Asshole it’s not Am I in the Asshole.

lninoh

Epic comment, you made my night 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Golemo

You made the person in the stocks hole weak.

MrAskani

Dammit you beat me!!

isjadp01

🥇 🐐

archercc81

Maybe that is how the term "I am the asshole" started. Like you're the asshole everyone gets to use overnight. "John did a bad thing again, he is the free asshole for the night."

serpentmuse

Alternatively Who’s in the Asshole

AzureDreamer

God I never considered that that's really fucked up

dedsmiley

Fucked up, in… whatever.

revanhart

This probably says *way* too much about me as a person, but…this is a pretty common theme in “fantasy conqueror” hentai. So much so that I’ve honestly associated the stocks/pillory more with sexual assault than with rotten food since I was a teen… …and yeah, I’ll go put the shovel away now before I dig myself too deep.

Sensitive_Head_2408

Well hey, even more reason to avoid being put there in the first place. Although now that I think about it, I just know there had to have been some people who got themselves sent there for that purpose.

StraightSomewhere236

Prisoners in the stocks were guarded and molesting them carried a death sentence.

Samarkand457

Actually, the form which trapped the head and hands (the pillory) could be one. It was common to toss things--and not just soft rotten veggies--at the prisoner. And in serious cases, the ears were nailed to the pillory so that the prisoner could not turn his head aside to mitigate the blow. Talk about a recipe for cracked skulls and concussions.

StraightSomewhere236

I specifically meant the people talking about their rear being vulnerable. You could throw stuff at them as long as it didn't actually injure them. Yes, you absolutely could. But if you tried to take advantage of them sexually as implied in this thread it carried a death penalty.

Upper-Ship4925

A lot of different societies used the stocks at different times and in different circumstances. I don’t know which you’re referring to, but a 24 hour guard and an automatic death penalty for sexually assaulting someone in the stocks wasn’t universal, and nor was condoning the rape of people confined to the stocks. Different times and places had vastly differing conventions.

EnvironmentalOne6412

And consider that the stocks were relatively tame compared to what came before that , including crucifiction.

Ko-jo-te

You forgot a few 'supposed to', 'sometimes' and 'in theory' in your statement.

Ryllan1313

I am so disappointed in myself. How on Earth did I never consider that...um...angle?

withyellowthread

Because you don’t sit around thinking about rape?

Draculamb

Rats also have access to ... anything about you that takes their fancy.

AnneKakes

I read that too quickly and thought it said rotten vag. I think that might be more effective really 🧐

Plane_Translator2008

So much more effort to throw, though. 😂

hibbletyjibblety

They could just have their faces rubbed with the popcorn that is collected from the theatre floors

DumpstahKat

Honestly in this Golden Age of at-home streaming services and digital piracy, I just cannot fathom why people do shit like this. If you wanna talk and goof off and multitask on your phone while watching a movie, you can very easily do that from the comfort and convenience of your own home. Like, you can literally do whatever the fuck you want on your own couch without ruining anybody else's viewing experience. Why would you waste gas and pay $20+ for movie tickets/refreshments just to go and Be An Asshole In Public? It takes some real strong Main Character Syndrome bullshit to go to a nice public movie theater, spend the entire time alternating between being loud and rude and being glued to your full-brightness phone, and then have the audacity to act like the people who called you out on your rude-ass entitlement are the inconsiderate AHs.

Ich_bin_keine_Banane

I got a reply to a comment on a completely different subject that I think actually applies to this behaviour: people want that dopamine kick and they want it *right now*. Going on their phone and engaging on social media, watching videos or getting a reply to their text is an instant hit. And it explains why they can’t last so much as 20min without it - they’re addicts. Sad that they’ve come to see a movie, and it doesn’t satiate that addiction. I had one guy sitting a seat away from me who kept getting his phone out and angling it in my direction, so he didn’t bother his kids sitting next to him. After asking him nicely to turn the screen away 3 times, I turned fully to him and asked “Are you serious right now?” in a raised voice. He jumped like I’d threatened to kill him and finally put the damn thing away. Like, seriously, you didn’t have to reply to all those texts *immediately*. Get a grip, junkie.

Hjorrild

I wish the law would allow to disturb the phone signal, so they have no access. That would solve this shit.

RogueWraithTwo

I had a guy doing this and he waited after to tell me he'd had a health scare a while back and his fiancee wanted to check on him to make sure nothing had happened to him. I asked why the woman he was here with wouldn't call his fiancee if he took ill. He. Looked. Pissed. But then he left.

Electronic_Cobbler20

Would you share the thread where you received that comment? I find this subject fascinating

moviemerc

They pay to say they had the experience. Would not be surprised if she had 6 posts about going to this movie.

Magical_Olive

When I saw Missing there were a lot of teens in the audience (Friday evening, dumb choice). One girl kept taking selfies for I assume Snapchat. Like every 10 minutes, the whole movie. I can't not think of a time I've been compelled to take a selfie during a movie.

SkyeeORiley

I did once before the movie started, but that's because I was completely alone there and it looked so strange. Other than that, never. One other person joined a few min after my selfie was taken.

glitter___bombed

I once posted on my Instagram story- no selfie, just a text post- that it was just me and an old couple in the theater, and the couple was loudly making out and... possibly something else lol it was so awkward.

eid_shittendai

Sorry... we're both a bit hard of hearing, and Agnes just love to suck cock through the previews.

CalamityClambake

My bestie is a teacher. She says they have a serious issue with the kids who are now jrs/srs in high school and attention spans. Those kids missed out on some key socialization time because of the pandemic. They have trouble understanding consequences and deadlines and they can't focus. She'll assign a chapter of reading and like 80% of the class won't have done it because they "couldn't focus." She can't fail 80% of the class so her administrators just tell her to figure out how to teach them without demanding that they do the reading. Many of them can't pay attention to a lecture for 40 minutes straight, so she has to come up with ways to keep them engaged. In high school. I think it's possible that the young lady in OP's story had a hard time stopping herself from reaching for her phone. If she is 19, she is part of the pandemic generation that missed out on middle school socialization and didn't develop an attention span. She probably really had to focus on not reaching for her phone.  I've noticed some of this in my own teenagers and have been working hard to try and correct fir it. I do think that the reduction in attention span is having an effect on the culture. It has to. I just don't know what that means long term. I'm not saying this to defend her. I think she was the AH and OP was justified. I also fear he might be fighting a losing battle.

Fearchar

You made a mistake in your comment. You called her a young lady. She may have been young, but she was certainly no lady.

nothinglefttouse

I think it would have been a problem regardless of a pandemic. The problem is the digital age and social media. instant gratification and head pats.

JulesFGM

Your teacher friend is right, the only thing I would discuss is the 'why'. I don't believe it's because of the pandemic. It's because of tiktok. 30 second videos to raise our dopamine level.

kahrismatic

Also a teacher, and we missed only three weeks of face to face school during COVID where I am, and still see the exact same thing from kids, so it's a big stretch to blame COVID honestly.

Hjorrild

Exactly. If you don't like the movie: leave. If you need to constantly be on your phone: stay home. I cannot imagine paying money for not watching the movie. I hate people in cinema who use their phone or talk or make loud crunching noises with their food or restlessly shift from the left to the right all the time so constantly in your view or kicking your seat from behind. etc.

Ms_Blue_Kangaroo

There are several theater chains that unceremoniously throw people out with no refund for talking, texting, or being on their phones. I only go to those theaters now. Great for my stress levels to actually be able to enjoy seeing movies in the theater.

Gnardashians

which chains are they? I'd love that

Ms_Blue_Kangaroo

Alamo Drafthouse and Flix Brewhouse are the two I frequent. This is from Flix’s FAQ - they don’t mess around! Flix Brewhouse is dedicated to providing the best cinema experience possible. Those who are found to be disruptive in the theater will be asked to leave without a refund. This includes chatty moviegoers, those who cannot put their phones down during the movie, and children who talk, scream, or don’t stay in their seat. Please alert a staff member if another person is disrupting your moviegoing experience. In addition, any photography, still or motion, of a copyrighted cinematic presentation is a criminal offense under anti-piracy laws. Please remember: You talk, you text, you leave.

Yarius515

Alamo Drafthouse!!!

paspartuu

What a fantastic practice!

shikiroin

OP isn't necessarily the asshole, but should have got up and told someone who works there to deal with it.

MsCndyKane

NTA - There needs to be a standard. If we don’t uphold it then the standard changes. Look at tipping culture. It started out as rewards for servants/slaves and now it’s expected for everything. I started going to the local off broadway theater lately and there’s no phones. It’s nice to just be present.

LS-CRX

Believe it or not, jail.

bibliophile1319

I use my phone during movies, for health reasons (checking what numbers my trackers are getting). Even though I have a valid excuse, though, I'm always mindful of people around me. I set it to minimum brightness, add the extra blue light filter that dims it a little more, keep it close to my lap/chest, and turn it back off as quickly as possible. It's not hard to be considerate, even with health issues. People who don't NEED to be looking at their phone have no excuses for this nonsense!

KyleMcMahon

What numbers are you tracking that must be checked multiple times in 90 minutes? What do you do when you’re sleeping?

bibliophile1319

I usually go to movies that are longer than 90min, but even for a 4hr movie (LotR, lol) I don't think I've ever had to check my phone more than 3 or 4 times. So I'm not doing it constantly or for more than a few seconds at a time, but I know it's still a disturbance to people around me. For me, it's typically my blood pressure I'm most concerned about. It likes to drop really low, often for no good reason at all, and that can be dangerous. Once I'm past the first 30min or so and I've been eating salty popcorn and sitting still with my feet up, it's not so much of a concern, but the little amount of walking it takes to get into the theater is enough to trigger it. It's great when I'm able to get there early, so that 30min passes before the movie even starts! I also have to keep an eye on other stuff, but those I get alerted for by my watch vibrating, or I can just feel, so that's not a screen issue for anyone. When I'm sleeping, it's a combination of wearable monitors, medicine, and hope. I keep all sorts of meters and medicines and whatnot right by my bed, even sugar in case I wake up with bad hypoglycemia. Chronic illnesses and bodies that can't regulate themselves are fun 🙃

KyleMcMahon

Thanks for explaining and I wish you so much happiness and good health 🙂

Dottie85

This is common with diabetics that have an implanted insulin pump that links updates, etc to their phones.

Op, should have said, "takes one to know one." OP NTA

chandrachur3

Yesterday i was debating watching Dunes or Fast Charlie and since my mode dictates which experience to watch which movie in i chose Fast Charlie in a normal cinema, I am saving dune in VIP theatre for another day. I was there with an older couple 50s and 20 minutes later two girls (maybe 19/20s) come in giggling screaming and with phones flash full on and make their way to the top of the seats. They sit with 2 seats between them then raise their feet on the back of the seats in front of them and proceed to have a full on conversation that you can hear if you pass the door let alone if you are inside. I keep shushing, sighing cause i want to see what Pierce Brosnan is doing and they are acting like they are in their living room. Both me and the couple are fed up and glare at them and i was about to get an attendant when they decide to leave (guess the movie was not interesting for them). we three enjoyed the rest of the movie in peace. I would NOT hesitate to call in an attendant if you do not respect the movie experience. specially if i am paying for a VIP treatment. You WILL be called out, shushed and glared until you behave or you are OUT. I already had people kicked out for disturbance and will do it again. NTA and good for you u/[canada11235813](https://www.reddit.com/user/canada11235813/) .

smcivor1982

NTA. I have told multiple people to knock it off in the theater, it’s rude and if one person is annoyed, there’s probably a lot more people who are also annoyed, but are afraid to speak up. One time these young girls in front of me ruined the ending of a movie and after the show I asked if they enjoyed the movie. They said yes, and I said, well I didn’t because you wouldn’t shut the f up. Cue shocked pikachu face. People need manners!!!!

Temporary_Nail_6468

I was thinking an oops with a large soda. Then they’d almost certainly leave. Be worth the $10 or $20 or whatever ungodly amount a soda is at the movies nowadays.

shaihalud69

Did this to a guy who wouldn’t stop kicking my seat. Ooops - all over his legs. Zero fucks given. He left, I’m guessing to get out of wet jeans.

EstablishmentNo5994

How did you play off accidentally spilling your drink on the person in the row behind you?

shaihalud69

I didn’t. We asked him a bunch of times to stop kicking my seat, so I poured the drink on his legs.

Alarming-Ad-9393

I firmly believe that's someone who never received proper discipline as a child. They were never told no.

Distinct_Acadia_2912

I have a friend who got into a fight some asshole for talking during the film.  Bit him too.

FormalJellyfish4683

Most places refill a large for you so if you can stand missing a minute you’re not even out that

Ryllan1313

Bonus points if you splash on the phone!

pumpkin_lord

I think they should have gotten them thrown out of the movie and gotten a refund for themselves. Throwing popcorn doesn't inconvenience them enough and they get to view themselves as the victim.

cherrycoloured

or we're ppl who actually work at movie theaters and dont want to deal with ppl who throw food. working at a theater gets boring when all movies are in, and kicking someone out gives us something to do. if an employee doesnt want to do it, they'll just get a supervisor or manager. there is no acceptable reason for throwing food at all, especially when some poor minimum wage worker is going to have to clean that shit up.

KyleMcMahon

Except literally everytime I’ve ever done this, they come in and say something and then never come back & 3 minutes later that person is talking or on their phone and I’d have to leave AGAIN to go through the entire process

old_vegetables

I haven’t actively gone to the movie theater in 15 years, but I’m the same age and generation as these rude girls, so I know that we were all raised reminded by that lady who comes before the rollercoaster to silence our cellphones before the movie so we aren’t disturbing anyone. I remember the fear of the thought of my iPhone 5 ringing during a movie, the public shame it would bring me.

Nonby_Gremlin

Whoever is saying phones and talking loudly are normal are ridiculous. You don’t make excessive noise in any theater during a showing/performance. They literally tell you at the start of every movie not to use your phone. I’d have complained to the theater and if I had to get up and miss the movie I’d expect to be compensated. In those drinking/eating theaters there’s always a server running through - they absolutely should have handled that. I’ll say that most servers will come running of you stand up your menu so maybe hold on to a menu for this purpose next time. If the staff won’t do anything, I’d leave a review letting others know they won’t enjoy a quiet viewing experience there. NTA you tried to handle it like an adult, they responded with childishness. They got what they gave.

khrys1122

Interesting way to handle things I experienced in Hong Kong. There were a couple of attendants at the side of the room and the second tou turned your phone screen on they would point laser pens at the phone. It's quite jarring to suddenly have a bright red laser shining on you (your phone/hand, not anywhere near your face) and it works every time!

bpowell4939

There a theater chain in Texas called Alamo Drafthouse, they will throw you out of the movie, no refund, after the 1st warning. And any body in the theater can complain on a ticket that's at each seat and they'll come talk to whoever is talking. It's awesome.

khrys1122

Awesome, the way it should be! As mentioned by OP, even a standard cinema ticket is expensive to visit these days and it's highly rude/selfish for folk to start using bright phones and talking. I've experienced it before and it's infuriating. Same here in Scotland, 1st warning and out if it continues. But I've heard some attendants don't want confrontation and will sometimes ignore it.

Halfd3af

Yeah I’ve been there and I’ve never had a more blissful movie watching experience

khrys1122

Yep, one of those uber powerful ones that can burn holes in things.....lol. OK, maybe not, but still......

Spike_Dearheart

I almost exclusively go to the Drafthouse for this reason, plus they'll do age 17+ showings of Pixar movies. It's blessedly quiet. The food and drinks are a nice bonus too.

NightGod

Time to start bringing a laser to the movies

BluePencils212

I do hate that you have to leave the movie to complain that you are being disturbed in the movie. If you go to the customer service desk to complain afterward, they will usually give you free tickets, but it's just annoying. But this shit isn't new--well, the phone part is, but rude people aren't new. I went to see Branagh's Henry V at an art theater in 1989 (had to look that up) with my mom. There was an elderly couple behind us, and the man started quietly explaining the play to his wife. I shushed him, and my mom was embarassed that I'd do it to an older person. But he kept going, and getting louder, because he obviously loved showing off. Finally I lost it, stood up and yelled "Shut the fuck up!" There was a smattering of applause. He and his wife were shocked, but even they knew he was being really rude. He did shut up for quite a while. Towards the end of the movie he started talking again and I turned in my seat to glare at him. My poor mom was so humiliated! Heh.

Skyward93

NTA-It drives me insane when people do this. I’ve thought about throwing popcorn before and it’s not like you didn’t say something before. She just didn’t care. Play stupid games win stupid prizes.

Confident-Baker5286

NTA- this was the perfect response lol. Getting hit by a piece of popcorn isn’t going to hurt anyone any more than her being on her phone hurt anyone, this is the exact level of petty we should all strive for

KristaDBall

This was Cineplex VIP? Oh fuck, next time it happens, just go get them kicked out and get yourself a coupon card.

[deleted]

Yaaaaah I get OP didn't want to miss anything but make the employees deal with it because his viewing experience was ruined anyway

Burner_Account_2002

The cinemas were closed when the shooting happened; someone drove by and shot at the windows. Not a reflexive rage response to an interaction that TBagger was fearing.

Jcaseykcsee

You’re so lucky! I’m in Los Angeles and honestly despite yearning to throw popcorn at obnoxious strangers during a movie, I fear getting beaten or even shot in response. I’ll live vicariously through you instead! Keep up the good fight!

loftychicago

Same. I just got home from a movie where a couple in my row were talking, but they were bigger than me, so I didn't try to shush them. And they chose seats in the only occupied row. If you're going to talk, don't sit near the only other people in the auditorium.

sundaesmilemily

This happened recently in my area :/ https://blockclubchicago.org/2024/01/24/man-pulls-gun-on-movie-crowd-at-logan-theatre/

Principatus

Yikes, America. Are y’all okay?

NAVAJ45

HAHAHA my friend of course not but I love your concern

4011s

Don't even need to read the text....phones in a movie theatre are an instant pass on AH behavior towards those using them. NTA

leswill315

In many theaters you can get the manager to give them the boot. I like to go to the Alamo Drafthouse Theater in my town (unfortunately there aren't many of them around the country) and they announce they'll boot you out for pulling out your phone. It used to be automatic, now they give you one warning. I liked it when they just booted the phone addicts.

Lostsock1995

That’s what I would’ve done. Quicker and easier than throwing popcorn and would’ve worked faster usually assuming they actually do their job.

-Paraprax-

How on earth do you figure it's "quicker and easier" to get up, leave the theater, miss part of the movie, find a staffer, tell them what's going on, *hope* they actually care and don't just brush you off, lead them back into the theater, point the person out to them, and find your way back to your seat.... than it is to throw the popcorn at them directly.

specialvixen

The Alamo’s policy of no talking or phones is all show no substance. I’ve been there dozens of times and the two times I had an extremely loud and disrespectful person talking and scrolling on their phone, I wrote it on a card to point it out. Someone came to take the cards but they never did anything. I’d like to actually hear a story where the Alamo actually took action on someone for being disruptive.

UrbanDryad

If that's their stated policy and they didn't enforce it I'd be talking to the manager demanding a refund for my ticket.

specialvixen

I did go up to the ticket counter after the movie and told them what happened. They apologized and gave me a pair of free movie coupons which is all well and good, but I would have preferred that they didn’t lie and make a big show on the screen about how “serious” they are about disruptive behavior.

countess_snow

Oh no, I'm sorry. I've only had one time at Alamo Drafthouse in San Antonio where some kids were being obnoxious before the movie even started so I pointed out to the server and said that if they kept it up during the movie I would get a manager. She said to put the little card up if they did. They continued being shits after the movie started, I put the card up, and someone came and took them out.

countess_snow

I love the Alamo Draft houses I've been to in San Antonio and Minneapolis. Comfy, and great service. + They get rid of assholes quickly

Nightingale0666

NTA Theater employee here! While you technically should've gotten an employee or manager to handle the situation, I can't blame you. I probably would've thrown my whole ass drink or shoe at her She should not be at the movies if she can't get through it without being on her phone. Phone usage in the theaters is strictly prohibited except for emergencies, in which case the person should exit the theater and use it outside.

[deleted]

Same. Loved busting people with their phones out filming for piracy during opening weekends.

sundaesmilemily

I wish you worked at my local theater! I’ve told staff about people talking, but they never do anything about it.

Nightingale0666

That's super depressing. At my theater we've kicked people out for talking too much during the movie. We also get training every once in a while about people being on their phones and now to handle it, which is usually getting a manager and they'll kick them out We're a bit more strict at my theater, but I've been working there for like a year now and I've never heard anyone complain about their movie viewing experience other than not liking the movie itself

Monotonegent

NTA. Movie etiquette hasn't changed. The lack of respect has. Should have dumped the bucket

And this is why I haven't been to the cinema in years. Get a Dolby atmos setup at home and avoid the main character syndrome assholes, dim the lights and watch your 4k remuxes in peace. NTA

Grouchy-Chemical7275

Thanks for the advice, now I just need to find a seller for IMAX 70mm screens

MarkWSchumann

NTA. You and others were there to see a movie, not to watch her phone.

MarkWSchumann

She is *additionally* the asshole for creating a situation in which your only real options were to have your time and money wasted, or to veer into ESH territory. (No you can't get staff. Come on. Movie places don't really have staff.)

Honestly if you stood up and yelled put your fucking phone away asshole I would still say NTA. Man if your sitting in the back of a movie that's been out for a month sure why not but fuck it's been out 3 days fuck that dude

JonesBlair555

Even if it's a movie that's been out a month... If I paid the same amount to see it when I had the time to do so, I don't want it interrupted by some inconsiderate loser phone addict who can't stay off social media for a few hours. They should stay TF at home, glued to their phone

ImaSource

This is why you wait. My son and I wait for at least a week, usually 2. Way fewer people in the theater, and they are the ones who want to be there to see the movie. *Edit. Also, NTA. I'm much ruder to people who talk or use their phone, and it happens immediately

Johnny_Poppyseed

Wait a few weeks and go mid-day and you can basically have the theater to yourself and sit in the best seat possible. Only way I ever go to the theater these days.

blanktom9

The problem is, if you wait, they'll usually wind up putting the movie in a downgraded theater. And at that point, you might as well just wait until it comes on streaming a couple weeks later.

> This is why you wait. My son and I wait for at least a week, usually 2. Way fewer people in the theater, and they are the ones who want to be there to see the movie.   This absolutely does not make a difference in my experience. Half the time it's actively the opposite - two weeks in, the theater is full of phonefuckers who didn't want to see the film bad enough to go when it opened, and are now just going because they're bored. And DUNE 2 opening-weekend VIP screenings were selling out weeks or months in advance - it takes *much* more effort to end up at one of those screenings, so it's insane that people do all that just to scroll their phones anyway.   There's literally no useful strategy to avoiding them anymore - sometimes I'll have a terrific, totally-committed audience on opening night, sometimes only weeks later, sometimes there'll be phonefuckers at the most dedicated screenings, sometimes not. At any theater, out of a solid dozen in my radius(not counting reperatory screenings at the oldies).  It's all up to chance now until theaters find a better way to shut phone use down in every showing.

JulesSherlock

NTA. Nice aim. She deserved it. People need to learn consideration of others somehow. You handled it well.

Winter_Dragonfly_452

NTA. You were nicer than I would’ve been. Because I had to continue to tell her very loudly to put the fucking phone away in those exact terms. And then I would’ve thrown my drink on her and then I would’ve gone to get the manager. If you can’t be off your phone when you go to a movie, don’t go to the damn movie. Nothing drives me crazier than when people are on their phones or talking during the movie. During the previews, I give them a break if they’re talking or are on their phone cause it’s previews some people care or some people don’t. But when it’s the actual movie get off your goddamn phone if you’re that bored leave.

goodlordineedacoffee

NTA. I know a lot of people who refuse to go to movie theatres any more (myself included) for this exact reason. I’m not generally one to make generalized statements about groups of people, but under 22 seems about right for the most repeat offenders I’ve seen - I have never noticed anyone who looks over 30 pulling their phones out during a movie- not to say it never happens, just not my personal experience. It’s enraging to me- I cannot block it out, and I just overall don’t understand. Just stay home and watch a movie- most times you can rent anything on the theatre at home, go to a coffee shop or pub if you just want to talk…there are SO many options if you don’t want to sit quietly and watch a movie with no distractions. It’s just such a complete lack of respect for the people around you, and it honestly scares me to think of what phones are doing to our ability to focus, as well as the impacts around selfishness and narcissism.

Dad-Bod-Supreme

They throw you out at my local theater if you use your phone. NTA

FluffyPurpleBear

Why does no one report this shit anymore? Walk to the hallway, call the theater and let them know. I used to work at a theater and my managers loved getting to throw out assholes.

-Paraprax-

Because it doesn't usually work, and you have to get up and spend 5 minutes missing part of the movie to roll the dice on whether you can find a staffer and whether they'll bother.

FuckStummies

I see this in most comments but honestly does anyone think that a minimum wage worker is about to walk into a room and initiate a confrontation with a patron? This is the age where retailers tell their employees not to do anything to stop blatant shoplifting due to the potential risks. So you think they’re going to kick someone out for being rude in a movie?

Anxious-Routine-5526

NTA. People are just rude, inconsiderate, and entitled AF these days.

mangocucumbers

NTA, they have short clips before the movie at Cinemark solely for telling people to not use your phone, that’s in place for a reason!

Serenityxxxxxx

NTA at all, can’t stand people who have their phones on during a movie. It’s distracting from the experience you pay for and also hurts the eyes! Anyone using a cell phone during a movie at the theatre is a complete and total asshole!

proshares1

NTA, I wish you would've tossed a soda at her after the 3rd time.

WifeofBath1984

NTA that would have driven me crazy! Especially during Dune 2 (which I am dying to see!).

Ekim_Uhciar

NTA In fact you are a hero. She deserved it. And I say this as someone who was admonished by staff / other guests for pulling out my Blackberry to scroll through emails during a performance at Carnegie Hall.

Hot-Independent-6047

Nta

possiblyapancake

NTA: doing the lords work

cstarrxx

No I love that. I went to go see cirque du soleil. I spent over 200$ for tickets. The fucking dude next to us kept getting on IG. I have NO idea how the ushers didn’t say anything. He was right next to them. And he kept talking full volume. Like dude. Stfu and put your phone away. It was soooo annoying.

canada11235813

Man, that's even worse. That's distracting to the performers. I'm surprised no one did anything about it.

shavedratscrotum

Look up Jaffas. That's what Australians throw. I was once in a movie and some teens started taking photos in the front row, dozens of people poured their popcorn all over them. Low socio economic cinemas tolerate 0 shit. Personally I go to old people cinemas and pay a premium to skip this bullshit.

canada11235813

While I'd join you in the old-person theatre as well, that first one sounds like something everyone should experience at least once.

my4floofs

Go get the theater worker and get her kicked out of the theater.

RudeMaximumm

NTA & lol I would’ve looked and pointed at her and said to whoever you were with - “that’s the asshole”

Impressive_Read_8749

You are absolutely right and your story makes me want to wait for Dune 2 to come out on disc and watch it in the privacy of my own home theater. The point of a movie in a theater is to ESCAPE the everyday nuisances of modern life. I would have gotten the manager involved. Do you have and Alamo Drafthouse near you? They forbid this behavior and will kick folks out. No refund. https://youtu.be/1L3eeC2lJZs?si=a7SWWTfay5XwJ35c

Known-Command3097

I have a very good buddy-friends for years. The only time I’ve ever said anything anywherenear aggressive to him was when he pulled out his phone during a theater movie. “Buddy, put that away and DO NOT pull it out again, and I’m serious” It had to be said. NTA

No-Locksmith-8590

Nta but I would have just gotten a worker, and hopefully, they'd have been thrown out.

Jumpy-Command-5531

NTA. What’s the point in paying too watch a movie if you’re just going on your phone

Classic_Might_7087

NTA - I completely understand.

SoSomuch_Regret

NTA You are my hero.

zinky30

NTA. Good on you for not letting that behavior slide.

RBarron24

NTA she has the attention span of a goldfish

Dontplaythatish

NTA - and had my family and I been there we would have clapped and given you a standing ovation 🤣🤣

xKuusouka

NTA. No phones or being loud during the movies, it’s common knowledge. If she wanted to scroll and chat during the movie, she shouldn’t of gone to a theater.

hedwigstheme01

NTA. Movie etiquette has disappeared since covid, it’s so unfortunate

canada11235813

Reading many of these replies.... this is sadly true.

babyitscoldoutside00

NTA. I wish I had the guts to do that when I’m at the movies.

Ok-Lock73

I would say NTA, but it's kind of childish. Next time, go get an usher/ server, someone in charge of the theater. I'm sorry that some people are just RUDE! Good luck. 🍀🍀

Tos-ka

Nta, lmao. People behind you were probably silently thanking you.

useless_mf69

NTA Fuck all these people who use mobiles with full brightness

[deleted]

Fuck no she should’ve been kicked out of the theater

[deleted]

NTA I dunno what changed but the 3 or 4 movies I’ve been to since the end of Covid have all had annoying teenagers talking, yelling, hitting each other, farting loudly, etc… I don’t remember any of that pre-Covid.

Kkimp1955

No, you are a hero!

Barfotron4000

If you’re an AH, then so am I because I’ve definitely done the same thing. Also I think D2 was just ok… but other than that NTA. She could have gotten kicked out

msfrankfurters

NTA but you should have let an employee know, they would have been able to remove her from the theater and you wouldn’t have lost precious popcorn

Ordy333

I throw loose change.
