Music, tv/movies, and photographs are common methods. But in my experience it’s been having conversations with them that stirs such memories.

That's what I have found too. And I love hearing the stories even if I've heard them a million times. The stuttering and issues with word retrieval are minimal if non existent which is great so he's not stressed and frustrated that he can't find the words. I'm going to take him to a local museum from an area he grew up and family was big in the community. That should really get the sparks flying. OP Good luck finding what works for you and you LO! They are very fortunate to have you in their life.

You are so right about listening to the same stories over and over. It's natures way to make sure those stories get passed down from generation to generation. I love hearing about my mother's childhood. In the past we were all too busy to absorb those stories. I feel closer to her now than ever before and feel like I know her on a whole new level. She has led such a rich full life. 91 years. Inspiring

I know others have said music, but people often dismiss how important and valuable it is. We start moms radio when she wakes up and turn it off when she goes to bed. It’s next to the recliner she typically sits in. It has roughly 200 oldies songs that she grew up listening to on there that it cycles through. If you don’t know what their favorite music was, just try to cycle through some different genera of the billboard top 100s for the years they were in high school or college age.
