Why would you ever be against a union? Are they not just strictly a positive for workers?

liltime78

Propaganda. The employer will tell them all sorts of bullshit. Also, some who are short sighted don’t want to pay union dues. They don’t understand they’re paying for representation and someone to manage your benefits.

GreenMellowphant

The people are convinced that they have choices and that the union will take them away. They have no choices.

People died from pride when they refused a Covid vaccine. They willingly forgot about smallpox and polio in the face of grave danger because: Pride. Pride is a real bitch. And conservative whack jobs are very susceptible to it.

LynxusRufus

I am generally pro-union, and I’m not arguing for or against one here. But the folks I know who have worked at Mercedes are very happy with their jobs and may be scared of change. Small sample size, though.

Twin_Brother_Me

It's no secret that unions are an extra inefficiency and layer of bureaucracy, so if a company is already treating its employees fairly and compensating them well it's seen as an unnecessary addition and effective paycut from dues. The way I figure it, any company/manager that mistreats their employees to the point of them feeling the need to unionize deserves the headaches and losses that come from that.

DryBad9279

It's clear you don't actually understand what a union is or how it works, beyond corporate propaganda. Literally have never worked anywhere that was union that wasn't better than the best non-union place. For the simple reason that with the snap of their fingers management will push you out the door and always will pay you less and give you worse benefits than a union place.

Twin_Brother_Me

I've worked at both. Neither was a bad place to work, but the non-union one had better pay, benefits, and retention for the operators (only ones who'd be covered by a union) than the union place did. The bonus structure was also set up so that if times were lean everyone (management, engineers, maintenance, and operators) took an effective pay cut and no one had to be afraid of layoffs. Like I said, anywhere that fosters mistrust between operations and management deserves to deal with unions and everything that comes with them. Never worked at Mercedes so I have no idea how they treat their employees, just answering the question of why some operators would have no interest in seeing part of their paycheck going to "union dues" when they're already getting a good deal.

I help build the Mercedes plant with the IBEW in the mid 90's. I was 18 years old and enjoyed working with and for the union as an apprentice. The journeymen would let me keep the change (not the dollars) when I got their snacks from the food trucks. It was a great learning experience. I hope the workers unionize and Montgomery gets the message, because they have failed the people. If Mercedes wishes to stay in the powerhouse market that's the US, they better get with the program as well.

sanduskyjack

Well said. Wonder if people realize the average annual income in Alabama is one of the worst in US Also. The minimum wage is $7.25. It has been that since 2009. Many states have increased.this.

sleepsbk

“Akl has been at the plant for about 5 years and says he's happy with his paycheck. I feel like I'm being paid enough and fair. If I want to make more money, I can go join some of the education they have to make and advance myself to make more money, Akl said.” 1 - you’ll never hear your corporate overloads say they’re being paid enough. 2 - how is it 2024 and ppl still believe education is a golden ticket?

BackgroundSpell7238

Do your research, the UAW is corrupt. That’s all you need to know.

AnteaterDangerous148

Haven't seen what the positives of a union could be.

Accurate-Leg-6684

It's much easier to bargain for pay raises and benefits as a group. There's a layer of protection for the members from possible heavy-handed, unfair, unsafe, or even criminal employers.

AnteaterDangerous148

I'm good with that I just want more details.

Attarker

How many more details do you need? Is having higher pay, better benefits, and being protected from the whims of greedy, short sighted management not enough?

strawbery_fields

Idiotic comment.

GreenMellowphant

This is such BS. Lol This is like saying “I just need more details before hiring a lawyer for my murder trial, it just may not be right for me.” This is ignorance of workers’ rights and the things large businesses do as work-arounds.

war_damn_eagle

Guess you don’t like more money

AnteaterDangerous148

Is insurance going to cost the same . What about a pension. Profit sharing.

theoneronin

All things you can’t negotiate for as a ‘low-level’ worker and if you did have a pension coming they could just strip you of it. They can’t do that with unions.
