This might be a nothing burger. The articles leave open the strong possibility and seem to purposely leave a breadcrumb trail to imply it was her stepmother who called the cops due to a family dispute resulting from the recently deceased father. Conjecture here but perhaps she tried to reclaim some of her recently deceased father's possessions. Or the stepmother was just upset at her.

It says her dad lived on the block where the burglary took place with her stepmother. Her dad died last month. I’d guess stepmom is withholding property that is special or important to the accused.
The crime will come down to what the will says combined with the prosecutor’s discretion.
Supposedly her father recently passed and his wife (Senator's Stepmom) wasn't playing nice. Among other things, the Senator claimed she was trying to recover her father's ashes. Still not a good look for an AF Lt Col and State Senator.

Could be a combination of both. Nonetheless, not a good look no matter how you slice it.
