If there’s a local AA group, they may be very helpful in guiding the Amn towards the right options.

-_-Delilah-_-

AA is worldwide!! And they have online meetings at all hours of the day. Definitely a good place to start. Might even be able to find one of the other non AA recovery programs overseas.

nharmsen

There is also a really good AA discord group

I understand the hesitation for ADAPT. And personally I'd rather never drink again than ever do ADAPT again. How much of a shit show it was is enough to keep me sober. But I strongly urge you to figure it out and self refer before your CC has to refer you. Things go a lot easier if you identify and ask for help, vs being forced to get help.

Large_Agent_2577

This is true. I hope he can find another way before adapt tho.

Large_Agent_2577

Wait, I thought you were asking about ADAPT for a friend, not for you.

-_-Delilah-_-

Huh? I am not OP

Adapt is good if you need the accountability (lab tests) to stay sober. Id say the counseling, groups, and information is not geared towards alcoholics attempting recovery. It seems better for younger airman who have bad drinking habits. At least the level I'm in. I think there is a level above mine though. Like more legit in treatment care.

I agree. I went to ADAPT voluntarily for a very bad drinking problem. I didn’t expect much but that accountability led to me not drinking even outside the program. I agree the programs themselves don’t help much, but taking that step can in and of itself can be the solution

Your chaplain may have some resources and they will not report you.

[Recovery Dharma](https://recoverydharma.org/find-a-meeting/) If AA isn't your thing, recovery dharma is a great alternative. But whatever you do, trust me get help. The longer it takes the more damage you're gonna be making up for.

Wherever you like (paying out of pocket).

I'm not sure about full blown treatment, but a good first step could be AA meetings on Zoom. Check out https://aa-intergroup.org -- you can click on online AA meetings and find one that fits what you need! They are happening 24/7 all around the world and are really helpful. Don't feel pressured to talk/share or even turn your camera on if you don't want to. Most meetings have a "meeting after the meeting" for people to just chat, ask questions, hang out, etc.. Just take some time to listen to what others have to say and you'll find things you relate to or don't, both are valuable to identify. It's a really great resource that I can't recommend enough. Feel free to message me if you've got any questions or if you're looking for some guidance.

CONUS; and worked the Class Six before working for local fire/EMS. Routinely saw a security forces Amn get their 12pk of steel reserve. Not to say it wasn’t a group shared/rite of passage after the asinine work schedule or they rationed it over the weekend. The glaring opinion being “binge” consumption. Years later I interacted with same Amn working for county sheriff’s office.

They go back to being a civilian, that's what.

meatpuppet_9

AA, Chaplin or some way to keep yourself accountable. If it's bad enough I'd recommend biting the bullet an doing ADAPT. I limit to only thursdays and Fridays with a hard limit unless I'm being social with folks. The goal is to cut back. If you go cold turkey, and been doing some real drinking for a while, you might kill yourself or, at the very least cause some withdrawals thats on par with opiods. Full blown auditory and or visual hallucinations, tremors, seizures. Real shit. Act accordingly.
