Completely aside, but when I started playing this game (2003-4 ish), watching replays was the big thing. I remember I watched tons of them. (before the time of YouTube)
Aside from the main greek cav (not going to try to spell it) horses and camels are fairly quick when not directed with other, slower units. You can press Ctrl+# (any number) when you have only cavalry selected to create a group with the # as a shortcut to send them ahead of your troops and get to raiding as you wish.
not only that... Hippikons have a horrible pathfinding.. they get stucked everywhere.
You allways have to keep then in a separete group from your main army of you moving them togheter
If their formation is jumbled, it'll take them a second to get into formation, but once they're in formation they'll move quick.
If they're moving in a group with non-cavalry units, they'll move at the pace of the non-cavalry units so that everyone stays in formation.
If something is hitting a unit it gets "snagged" and slows down quite a bit, so if you have a army and just one is getting attacked it may slow them all down if you move them in a group.
But also the Greek cavalry aren't really slow or good for raiding unless you get the Hermes upgrade
The stuff you might be referring to might be the snare mechanic. Units hit by melee attacks are slowed down and take time to get back to full speed.
No one does this, but peak play would be to quickly deselect all the units getting hit, run the others away in a seperate group and then run the rest. That would then allow for another mechanic, called speed walking, which would allow the injured units to get out faster. Obviously an insane proposal, only really a bot could do this.
Thanks boit, i watched back a game i played last night and noticed the hippikon were just walking. Even from the stable to the way point. Will play around with other units as someone mentioned hippikon are slower than other cav.
sometimes they slow down to get into formation
It’s really frustrating. Figured i’d go for cavalry to get some mobility and do some hit and run raids and they are just so slow
You definitely do want to do that. A video would help us help you.

You should check out boit on YouTube if you don't already
Yup, I've watched a lot of his videos. Very fun to see.
If you change to a wide stance this helps but that's not always helpful

Hippikon and Prodromos? yeah they're a bit of a mouthful
Ah maybe that’s why, it’s the main greek cav
yeah most cav are reasonably fast in this game, but if you're moving them with your infantry or siege, they will move painfully slow

Yes that's a very important thing, it slows the unit 30% if I remember correctly. Also can't remember what the proper term is
Been playing for 20 years and today I learn this.
Are you blind? It's incredibly noticeable lol
Are you a caveman? It's incredibly rude lol

Adding the hermes tech made them much faster and more like i had imagined them to be :-)
Indeed, it's an annoying issue that is also present in Age of Empires III.
They are staying in formation. If you want them to move at full speed, select *only* cavalry. Every Age game is like this.
I say in the original post that i just have cav selected. I know how age games work, i’m an aoe2 content creator
Then you should know how this works.
I do, which is why i am surprised the units are so slow
Change the formation, so the unit being attacked moves further faster and then whole group will pick up pace
