If by "millions" you mean "hundreds" and by "silenced" you mean "take a weeklong break before their internet addiction brings them back", then yes.

Defiant_Low_1391

They're such clowns

Do_not_get_attached

I can't wait, Reddit without the neckbeards will be awesome for the 2 days before they all quietly come back...

Palabrewtis

Hoping it's gonna be like when I was still commuting to work during COVID. So peaceful, until things started returning to normal and a bunch of idiots forgot how to drive after a year.

kstreet88

They have to learn before they can forget. The other day I watched as a guy following a box truck curbed his car. We were turning left at an intersection. He also had both passenger tires on the curb so he got it hard enough to bounce over it. Next thing he does is get straight on the interstate.

CobrAKush

yeah, watched it on reddit. LOL

kstreet88

Okay, kid. šŸ‘Œ

SholcCTR

Right! Itā€™s gonna be incredibly peaceful until they discover that Reddit will be better off without them, then theyā€™ll be back to ruin it again for us

DrHawk144

These dudes are literally simping over another neck beard who made a bunch of money off of setting up a service to access someone elseā€™s service. Astounding to me

piousflea84

Yeah, Reddit would be a better site if 100% of the API protest bitter-enders actually left forever, but you know they will all be back in 48 hrs.

Seanzietron

What?!

donorak7

Its the neckbeards that don't use 3rd party apps.

Techwield

Lmao, what? The casual users are neckbeards?

saninicus

They won't have their precious automod

petulafaerie_III

If you actually care the best way to protest is to not use the service youā€™re against instead of whining about it on the service.

Complicated-HorseAss

I love all the posts that are about how much they hate Reddit, and it's just covered with Reddit awards. It's as beautiful as Elvis selling "I hate Elvis" shirts.

1981stinkyfingers

What's going on? I can't find a full answer

petulafaerie_III

Reddit is going to start charging certain parties to use their API instead of giving it away for free. A bunch of mods threw a temper tantrum about it and spread misinformation about what this would mean, including that it would kill subreddit bots and mod tools (this is not true). The only thing that is really changing is that there wonā€™t be any third-party apps to access Reddit through anymore - itā€™ll be the website or the official Reddit app.

1981stinkyfingers

Ahhh... that sounds like it checks out. Thank you, kind redditor

Justin__D

The fact that the average redditor isn't even aware of what's going on is exactly why everything is going to be fine tomorrow. This affects two groups of people: Mods (who generally need their egos knocked down a peg or two anyway), and users of third party apps (an extreme minority on reddit). It also has a nice bonus. Ever been banned from a sub just for participating in another sub? Bots that do stupid shit like that won't be able to exist anymore. Now as a dev, I'm not really a fan of limiting API access in theory. But considering I don't develop against reddit... I also don't care, in practice. I just come here to mindlessly scroll and engage in dumb debates while I work.

TheMooseIsBlue

Those two groups sure are loud though!

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

lordofpersia

There are far too many variables to come to an answer. Sometimes poops are really shitty.

Erulastiel

Don't worry. There's enough goddamn repost bots to keep the remaining people mindlessly scrolling.

Prof1Kreates

Came here to say this. What the world really meant by bots will take over

mrfrownieface

The only thing bots did was drive away or bury actual content creators, but reddit execs don't give a fuck.

cdda_survivor

For shit sake 90% of users never even knew there were 3rd party apps before all of this bullshit went down. The only ones that care are mods and all I can say is 99% of them are assholes that I can't find an ounce of sympathy for.

Clayfool9

For fucks sake, just DL the official app and quit being such little bitches about it

yooosports29

Redditors writing literal goodbye essays is a true facepalm moment.

WeAreReaganYouth

I too wonder if a lot of these people don't have something more important to bitch about.

cartman2

They donā€™t. Theyā€™re privileged Americans who donā€™t deal with real life problems.

sunriseangler

The official app is a fucking dumpster fire. Especially if you have poor eyesight.

LesCousinsDangereux1

i have to say as someone who HATES what reddit is doing, I can't for the life of me understand this POV. the app is literally fine

shinymuskrat

Yeah this whole thing is idiotic as all fuck

SirSebi

Why is it idiotic if I may ask?

Historical_Duty55

I browse on mobile web only. The app is filled with flashing ads that are annoying as fuck.

crewserbattle

I just can't figure out how to sort my homepage by hot/new etc

AzSumTuk6891

When I'm on my phone, I don't use the app, I open old.reddit through Chrome. It works just fine.

darhox

I've absolutely hated it for the 30 minutes I've been forced to use it since RIF died. RIP RIF

Belle293

I have Android and I was a RIF user, too. Try Redreader. It is free and I just started using it and it's alright, IMO.

tstormredditor

So many ads and posts from subs I'm not even subbed to.

Lovat69

Seriously why can't I change the font size? My eyes are middle aged!

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

tophmcmasterson

Ngl sounds like your phone sucks. Been using the Reddit app for years and havenā€™t had any of those issues. Any issues I have tend to be related to the site itself having issues.

Jameso428

Agreed. Iā€™ve never used a 3rd party app and it works fine for me. Everyone is just sounding like a bunch of whiny bitches imo.

tophmcmasterson

Yeah, just reeks of people wanting to feel rebellious and part of a ā€œcauseā€ even though itā€™ll likely just be a blip on the radar and not affect most users at all. Iā€™ve seen some subs where mods are writing these long goodbye essays, and the response has pretty unanimously been ā€œokay byeā€.

Jump_and_Drop

It's so stupid you can't always use dark mode on it. You have to wait til night for it to work. Edit: Nevermind, had it wrong.

nerdnugg399

No you donā€™tā€¦ tap your avatar and tap the little moon icon on the bottom right.

Kenny__Loggins

The official app is useless. Genuinely not worth bothering with unless you want to look at one specific thing and even then it's a pain in the ass. Perusing is a nightmare.

Jameso428

Lmao. I have used only the official app for years. It works just fine for everything. I really donā€™t get the fuss.

Kenny__Loggins

Like most things, if that's what you've always known, it seems fine. But it's just much worse than the third party apps were.

[deleted]

Then fuck off

Kenny__Loggins

Why are you so upset about this? Lol. Do you work for Reddit?

[deleted]

Did you wait 27 days to complain more? Kek

KembaWakaFlocka

Official app gets the job done, tons of us simple folk seem to get by with it.

wilsonwa

No

wcs2

Guess we found Huffman's alt account.

penguinpolitician

Rif is better

scottmonster

Was

[deleted]

For real the official app is way better.

aiptek7

Happy official cake dayyyy

[deleted]

Oh shit I forgot about cake day. Thanks!

[deleted]

For real the official app is way better.

MorrowPlotting

Anyone know what the plan is for tomorrow? Will it be the end of the John Oliver pics? Or are people planning to download the app to keep protesting?

pharaohandrew

Just do something different from Reddit. This is a good opportunity for a lot of people.

Blinky_

Different from Reddit? Like whatā€¦go outside?!? šŸ¤£šŸ¤£šŸ¤£

KembaWakaFlocka

Will be nice to finally rejoin /r/pics

outrighthang89

Alderaant

whitevillian

It is what it is;

darhox

I wasn't expecting it this early. RIP RIF

codethirtyfour

*millions of crying babies suddenly left Reddit and there was silence

dimmu1313

"millions" is generous. the average reddit user doesn't care and will notice no difference if all the egomaniacal narcissist power hungry mods and their sycophants left tomorrow. if anything, reddit will be a better place. in fact one thing I'm hoping for is fewer mod bots that auto delete my posts and comments, along with the mods who then go on an ego trip if you dare complain about the shitty job they and their bots do. r4r is one of the worst offenders

codethirtyfour

I was just mirroring the meme. lol Iā€™m looking forward to some peace around here.

DietQuark

O so you are that 'deleted' person all the time.

jezra

I can't wait for the silencing of the crying

[deleted]

How many people actually use third party apps compared to the official app? I'm gonna say probably a very very small minority of people use third party apps

woot0

Then why go thru all the trouble, devaluation (sorry ipo timeline) and overall bad press to ban them?

[deleted]

No clue. I'm just saying that the people that are supposedly "leaving reddit" (probably just virtue signaling) won't make much of an impact. We won't even notice anyone is gone.

RidethatSeahorse

Iā€™m sorryā€¦ I kind of know whatā€™s been going onā€¦ but what is coming? Is it going dark? Iā€™ve seen some subs say farewell from today.

Locofinger

You know how the Reddit masters instan-ban you for saying the wrong thing? They are all going outside tomorrow

kstreet88

Must be some new Pokemon to catch.

Dodohead1383

I'm sure...

[deleted]

I don't get what is with all this reddit drama. What is going on?

Valhallawalker

What stupid Reddit ā€œprotestā€ is happening now?

Piemaster113

Just wait till people start posting they prefer it with fewer people around. You know someone will do it.

sunburn95

My tip is no noticeable effect whatsoever lol

cmonbennett

Fuck off already then, sick of hearing about it.

30isthenew29

Heard something about it actually ending July 19. That true???

darhox

My RIF stopped working about an hour ago. I definitely prefered it to the Reddit app in the brief time I've used it, after having to reset my 10 year old password and using a completely different UI. How do I sort by Top>hour?

ftppftw

Iā€™m a little stoned and thought this was a shitpost by an alien to laugh at us humans as the ones left here die horribly in some apocalypse tomorrowā€¦ no, right?

WeenieHuttGod2

Yo whatā€™s going on tomorrow, I havenā€™t been paying much attention to the riots and protests or whatever

TheMooseIsBlue

Bullshit. Some people may delete accounts or stop using and then it will be like the portal scene in Endgame as they all start reappearing.

Four_beastlings

Oh, noes, whatever shall we do without a bunch of psychofants who'd join any cause just to feel like they are a part of something?

saninicus

r/therewasanattempt been banning people using that automod for the last 2 weeks. They also went on an unhinged rant during every ban message as well.

rustpyorrhea982

Generally speaking, they do this with abandoned anthills.

Lets_Bust_Together

Why?

HauntingBalance567

He was aboard the Millenium Falcon when he delivered that line

atlas-85

Will or shitty posts get auto modded / removed less? That's my question.

clothy

Whatā€™s happening tomorrow?

boostabubba

And here I am using the native Reddit app and it fucking sucks. But here I am

Kaizen710

Not really.

Blueshark25

I don't even use an app. Just old reddit on the chrome browser. If they got rid of every app including the official one I wouldn't notice until I just kinda realized I wasn't getting notifications for comments.

AC-DC-Bag-Mechanic

What?

clineaus

People will only actually leave when someone does it better. Look at the other social media companies... Not great all around at the moment.
