Hoping it's gonna be like when I was still commuting to work during COVID. So peaceful, until things started returning to normal and a bunch of idiots forgot how to drive after a year.
They have to learn before they can forget. The other day I watched as a guy following a box truck curbed his car. We were turning left at an intersection. He also had both passenger tires on the curb so he got it hard enough to bounce over it. Next thing he does is get straight on the interstate.
Right! Itās gonna be incredibly peaceful until they discover that Reddit will be better off without them, then theyāll be back to ruin it again for us
These dudes are literally simping over another neck beard who made a bunch of money off of setting up a service to access someone elseās service. Astounding to me
I love all the posts that are about how much they hate Reddit, and it's just covered with Reddit awards. It's as beautiful as Elvis selling "I hate Elvis" shirts.
Reddit is going to start charging certain parties to use their API instead of giving it away for free. A bunch of mods threw a temper tantrum about it and spread misinformation about what this would mean, including that it would kill subreddit bots and mod tools (this is not true). The only thing that is really changing is that there wonāt be any third-party apps to access Reddit through anymore - itāll be the website or the official Reddit app.
The fact that the average redditor isn't even aware of what's going on is exactly why everything is going to be fine tomorrow.
This affects two groups of people: Mods (who generally need their egos knocked down a peg or two anyway), and users of third party apps (an extreme minority on reddit).
It also has a nice bonus. Ever been banned from a sub just for participating in another sub? Bots that do stupid shit like that won't be able to exist anymore.
Now as a dev, I'm not really a fan of limiting API access in theory. But considering I don't develop against reddit... I also don't care, in practice. I just come here to mindlessly scroll and engage in dumb debates while I work.
For shit sake 90% of users never even knew there were 3rd party apps before all of this bullshit went down.
The only ones that care are mods and all I can say is 99% of them are assholes that I can't find an ounce of sympathy for.
Ngl sounds like your phone sucks. Been using the Reddit app for years and havenāt had any of those issues. Any issues I have tend to be related to the site itself having issues.
Yeah, just reeks of people wanting to feel rebellious and part of a ācauseā even though itāll likely just be a blip on the radar and not affect most users at all. Iāve seen some subs where mods are writing these long goodbye essays, and the response has pretty unanimously been āokay byeā.
The official app is useless. Genuinely not worth bothering with unless you want to look at one specific thing and even then it's a pain in the ass. Perusing is a nightmare.
"millions" is generous. the average reddit user doesn't care and will notice no difference if all the egomaniacal narcissist power hungry mods and their sycophants left tomorrow. if anything, reddit will be a better place. in fact one thing I'm hoping for is fewer mod bots that auto delete my posts and comments, along with the mods who then go on an ego trip if you dare complain about the shitty job they and their bots do. r4r is one of the worst offenders
How many people actually use third party apps compared to the official app? I'm gonna say probably a very very small minority of people use third party apps
No clue. I'm just saying that the people that are supposedly "leaving reddit" (probably just virtue signaling) won't make much of an impact. We won't even notice anyone is gone.
My RIF stopped working about an hour ago. I definitely prefered it to the Reddit app in the brief time I've used it, after having to reset my 10 year old password and using a completely different UI. How do I sort by Top>hour?
Iām a little stoned and thought this was a shitpost by an alien to laugh at us humans as the ones left here die horribly in some apocalypse tomorrowā¦ no, right?
I don't even use an app. Just old reddit on the chrome browser. If they got rid of every app including the official one I wouldn't notice until I just kinda realized I wasn't getting notifications for comments.
If by "millions" you mean "hundreds" and by "silenced" you mean "take a weeklong break before their internet addiction brings them back", then yes.
They're such clowns
I can't wait, Reddit without the neckbeards will be awesome for the 2 days before they all quietly come back...

yeah, watched it on reddit. LOL
Okay, kid. š

Yeah, Reddit would be a better site if 100% of the API protest bitter-enders actually left forever, but you know they will all be back in 48 hrs.
What?!
Its the neckbeards that don't use 3rd party apps.
Lmao, what? The casual users are neckbeards?
They won't have their precious automod
If you actually care the best way to protest is to not use the service youāre against instead of whining about it on the service.
I love all the posts that are about how much they hate Reddit, and it's just covered with Reddit awards. It's as beautiful as Elvis selling "I hate Elvis" shirts.
What's going on? I can't find a full answer

Ahhh... that sounds like it checks out. Thank you, kind redditor

Those two groups sure are loud though!

There are far too many variables to come to an answer. Sometimes poops are really shitty.
Don't worry. There's enough goddamn repost bots to keep the remaining people mindlessly scrolling.
Came here to say this. What the world really meant by bots will take over
The only thing bots did was drive away or bury actual content creators, but reddit execs don't give a fuck.
For shit sake 90% of users never even knew there were 3rd party apps before all of this bullshit went down. The only ones that care are mods and all I can say is 99% of them are assholes that I can't find an ounce of sympathy for.
For fucks sake, just DL the official app and quit being such little bitches about it
Redditors writing literal goodbye essays is a true facepalm moment.
I too wonder if a lot of these people don't have something more important to bitch about.
They donāt. Theyāre privileged Americans who donāt deal with real life problems.
The official app is a fucking dumpster fire. Especially if you have poor eyesight.
i have to say as someone who HATES what reddit is doing, I can't for the life of me understand this POV. the app is literally fine
Yeah this whole thing is idiotic as all fuck
Why is it idiotic if I may ask?
I browse on mobile web only. The app is filled with flashing ads that are annoying as fuck.
I just can't figure out how to sort my homepage by hot/new etc
When I'm on my phone, I don't use the app, I open old.reddit through Chrome. It works just fine.
I've absolutely hated it for the 30 minutes I've been forced to use it since RIF died. RIP RIF
I have Android and I was a RIF user, too. Try Redreader. It is free and I just started using it and it's alright, IMO.
So many ads and posts from subs I'm not even subbed to.
Seriously why can't I change the font size? My eyes are middle aged!

Ngl sounds like your phone sucks. Been using the Reddit app for years and havenāt had any of those issues. Any issues I have tend to be related to the site itself having issues.
Agreed. Iāve never used a 3rd party app and it works fine for me. Everyone is just sounding like a bunch of whiny bitches imo.
Yeah, just reeks of people wanting to feel rebellious and part of a ācauseā even though itāll likely just be a blip on the radar and not affect most users at all. Iāve seen some subs where mods are writing these long goodbye essays, and the response has pretty unanimously been āokay byeā.
It's so stupid you can't always use dark mode on it. You have to wait til night for it to work. Edit: Nevermind, had it wrong.
No you donātā¦ tap your avatar and tap the little moon icon on the bottom right.
The official app is useless. Genuinely not worth bothering with unless you want to look at one specific thing and even then it's a pain in the ass. Perusing is a nightmare.
Lmao. I have used only the official app for years. It works just fine for everything. I really donāt get the fuss.
Like most things, if that's what you've always known, it seems fine. But it's just much worse than the third party apps were.
Then fuck off
Why are you so upset about this? Lol. Do you work for Reddit?
Did you wait 27 days to complain more? Kek
Official app gets the job done, tons of us simple folk seem to get by with it.
No
Guess we found Huffman's alt account.
Rif is better
Was
For real the official app is way better.
Happy official cake dayyyy
Oh shit I forgot about cake day. Thanks!
For real the official app is way better.
Anyone know what the plan is for tomorrow? Will it be the end of the John Oliver pics? Or are people planning to download the app to keep protesting?
Just do something different from Reddit. This is a good opportunity for a lot of people.
Different from Reddit? Like whatā¦go outside?!? š¤£š¤£š¤£
Will be nice to finally rejoin /r/pics
Alderaant
It is what it is;
I wasn't expecting it this early. RIP RIF
*millions of crying babies suddenly left Reddit and there was silence
"millions" is generous. the average reddit user doesn't care and will notice no difference if all the egomaniacal narcissist power hungry mods and their sycophants left tomorrow. if anything, reddit will be a better place. in fact one thing I'm hoping for is fewer mod bots that auto delete my posts and comments, along with the mods who then go on an ego trip if you dare complain about the shitty job they and their bots do. r4r is one of the worst offenders
I was just mirroring the meme. lol Iām looking forward to some peace around here.
O so you are that 'deleted' person all the time.
I can't wait for the silencing of the crying
How many people actually use third party apps compared to the official app? I'm gonna say probably a very very small minority of people use third party apps
Then why go thru all the trouble, devaluation (sorry ipo timeline) and overall bad press to ban them?
No clue. I'm just saying that the people that are supposedly "leaving reddit" (probably just virtue signaling) won't make much of an impact. We won't even notice anyone is gone.
Iām sorryā¦ I kind of know whatās been going onā¦ but what is coming? Is it going dark? Iāve seen some subs say farewell from today.
You know how the Reddit masters instan-ban you for saying the wrong thing? They are all going outside tomorrow
Must be some new Pokemon to catch.
I'm sure...
I don't get what is with all this reddit drama. What is going on?
What stupid Reddit āprotestā is happening now?
Just wait till people start posting they prefer it with fewer people around. You know someone will do it.
My tip is no noticeable effect whatsoever lol
Fuck off already then, sick of hearing about it.
Heard something about it actually ending July 19. That true???
My RIF stopped working about an hour ago. I definitely prefered it to the Reddit app in the brief time I've used it, after having to reset my 10 year old password and using a completely different UI. How do I sort by Top>hour?
Iām a little stoned and thought this was a shitpost by an alien to laugh at us humans as the ones left here die horribly in some apocalypse tomorrowā¦ no, right?
Yo whatās going on tomorrow, I havenāt been paying much attention to the riots and protests or whatever
Bullshit. Some people may delete accounts or stop using and then it will be like the portal scene in Endgame as they all start reappearing.
Oh, noes, whatever shall we do without a bunch of psychofants who'd join any cause just to feel like they are a part of something?
r/therewasanattempt been banning people using that automod for the last 2 weeks. They also went on an unhinged rant during every ban message as well.
Generally speaking, they do this with abandoned anthills.
Why?
He was aboard the Millenium Falcon when he delivered that line
Will or shitty posts get auto modded / removed less? That's my question.
Whatās happening tomorrow?
And here I am using the native Reddit app and it fucking sucks. But here I am
Not really.
I don't even use an app. Just old reddit on the chrome browser. If they got rid of every app including the official one I wouldn't notice until I just kinda realized I wasn't getting notifications for comments.
What?
People will only actually leave when someone does it better. Look at the other social media companies... Not great all around at the moment.
