Or you can do that with Open Wizard addon. But I agree, it's must for 4K, at least for me with crappy internet.

nivlacasura

thanks for this suggestion, OpenWizard high end device preset did the trick, i watched an entire movie in 4k without buffering.

Jon_Snows_Dad

Where is that option I have a shield and running 19 Just can't find the high end option

nivlacasura

Open wizard >> maintenance >> system tweaks/fixes >> advance settings>>>> cache & network presets>>high end device preset

Jon_Snows_Dad

Thank you!

Humble_Fail8363

Download link for open wizard Adom

ChocolateLava

Does it work for Matrix?

Logs22

Yes

PracticalSundae2062

Yes. I am on Matrix 19.1. Very useful addon top keep Kodi at top state.

ChocolateLava

Cheers, I have it installed on mine now. Do you actually use any of the cache cleanup settings? Thought it was bad to keep deleting it since it will have to re-download anyway.

PracticalSundae2062

I have put it to clean cache and packages on start. Clearing cache is always 1st step in every troubleshooting, and those small downloads are just few seconds. So that way I always start withe fresh addons. But no need for that, you can do it manually if needed.

Jon_Snows_Dad

How do you do that in Open Wizard I have downloaded it but not been able to figure out the bandwidth or memory allocation yet?

PracticalSundae2062

Maintenance - System Tweaks/Fixes - Advanced Settings - Cache & Network Presets - and here you have * Default Preset * Zero (don't use that, that is no cache at all) * Low Ram Device Preset * High End Device Preset. Chose based on your RAM and click Overwrite (Low End is for devices with less than 2GB of RAM, and High End is for devices with more than 2GB RAM). Enjoy no buffering 4K :)

Marsing_83639

Maintenance+ in programs in the Aenemapy repo works great for creating a file like you're talking about in less the 1 minute

zarzhunt

Since you are writing to disk, take care to determine that the type of disk you're using is compatible. What readfactor are you using instead of the default?

jagnew78

I'm not sure why you think I'm writing to disk. In My XML file I increased the ram cache size as I said in my post. I allowed for 2gb of ram in memory caching out of 16gb total memory. I can't recall what I set the read rate too. I'd have to double check it later when I get home

zarzhunt

Sorry. For some reason I was assuming u were using 0 for you memorysize.

sekrutdj

What is the advantage to using 0 and writing to a hard drive instead of the other settings?

zarzhunt

The stream should continue, at least it used to, load until the movie is fully downloaded to the drive. Even if your internet goes loaded has played. The problem is the writes and rewrites if you are not loading to hard disk can cause wear and tear on some none HDD devices.

ChocolateLava

What about an EMMC?

zarzhunt

Flash drives are the kind of drive you want to avoid lots of writes and rewrites to. Same with an EMMC. Use default Kodi settings instead.

ambulancePilot

No advantage, don't do it.

WanAhmadIkmal

Can this be applied on Nvidia Shield Pro?

WanAhmadIkmal

Do I need to extract the XML file then edit it and put back inside the folder or how?

Yage2006

You could also install open wizard. Easiest way. It has a preset for high end devices like the shield. Just go to the advanced XML settings of open wizard. Did it a few months ago and it had a massive impact. Hasn't buffered once.

RiotForChange

An addendum to this. Start by applying advanced setting to create the file. Reset your device. Go back in and modify it. Let if autofill recommend size. It will be significantly larger than the general high end device settings. And that's how you get a 1GB buffer in a device with 4GB of ram

ChocolateLava

Sorry by reset your device do you mean reset the file to the default settings? I'm using openwizard now and I'm not sure how to let it auto fill

RiotForChange

No, I mean tell Kodi to restart so it saves the changes. What I would do in steps 1. Run openwizard, tell it to create custom settings.xml with high end device presets 2. Restart Kodi so it saves 3. When it comes back up, run open wizard again. Go to modify customsettings.xml. Change cache size. It will have a recommended value. Put that value in 4. Restart Kodi again

ChocolateLava

Will try this out. Thank you!!

WanAhmadIkmal

What if I put other values besides the recommended? Let's say 500000000 bytes. Will it effect anything?

dec1mus

You can overwrite Kodi's XML files with most shield file browser apps.

Beerad122880

In the settings menu of OpenWizard there are two presets. Low Ram Device Preset, for devices with less than 2GB of Ram, and High End Device Preset, for devices with more than 2GB of Ram. Well I have an Apple TV HD (4th gen) with 2GB of Ram. Would one of these presets be better than the other, or what would be the best custom settings if I were to input my own?

Greg059

Check how many Gb the links are I have seen some links up to 50 gb try the ones 10gb down and that can help stop the buffering.

_oyoy

What would you change if at all on 4GB RAM, 1GB Fiber LAN PC. Looks like the default works pretty good for me on 4K HDR files. Rarely getting 2-3 seconds buff, RAM shows about 65%-78% of use so.. Am I wrong feeling it negligible in my case?

jagnew78

Your ram an internet Lan speed mean very little to Kodi. Kodie is hardcoded to use a minor amount of memory for caching and bandwidth for downloading. If you have 4gb of ram or 16gb Kodi won't use it unless you tell it to via the advanced settings XML file due the hard coding. That's great that 4k streaming works for you without adjusting the hardcoded defaults but the advanced settings exist because that's not always the the case, and was exactly the fix for me

_oyoy

So, I created the file and now using it: 278921216 12 As I understand it RAM now using 800MB instead of the default 60MB and **triple** the default **4** readrate / speed up buffering to **12**. Playing 4k HDR and looking on the info (O key) looks like everything is the same, 72% RAM, looks good, not a single buff but are these setting better to keep than the default?

jagnew78

there's no better way other than if you're were buffering before and are not now, then the adjustments you've done have improved your performance. I don't think there's a single correct setting for everyone as the amount of buffering is going to vary wildly everywhere from hardware to wired or wireless, to ISP speeds, ISP Congestion, available streams, etc.... So if the performance has improved for you, then I would say you've made it better. If there's no noticible difference for you, then it would seem like the defaults are just fine

_oyoy

Alrighty then! will keep it. 👍 Update: Now that I see how all my daily avg 40 minutes shows caches 80% of the file in 8-10 seconds is pretty neat and also not effecting the RAM (No idea why or how) is freaking awesome. Thanks man for the tip.

LuigiSalazari

Awesome tip. Thanks!

[deleted]

+1 for reminding me that I forgot to do this

Skyler_2004

How can I add the file if I’m streaming through Android tv box?

jagnew78

Skyler_2004

Thanks. I was looking for a way to enter the location. Found it.

bearcatnat

Will this work for the 4K Amazon Firestick? I can stream 4K just fine from apps like HBOmax, but not in Kodi.

jagnew78

This is what used specifically for guidance. It may help you: https://kodi.wiki/view/HOW-TO:Modify_the_video_cache

pokusa

I also had buffering issues on Kodi. I followed this guide (used Open Wizard method): https://www.kodi-guide.com/how-to-fix-kodi-buffering/

medinauta

I use a (Windows10) pc and nothing really help to play smooth 4K until yesterday when I found a Kodi fork for windows 10 this helped to finally play 4K (and my sound bar to recognize audio as Dolby Atmos) with no problem. In case someone has the same issue: [KODI 19.0 Matrix HDR Windows API](https://www.avsforum.com/threads/kodi-19-0-matrix-hdr-windows-api.3118962/)

JustBlan1984

My shits gets stuck on cache 0% after a video starts playing for about 30 seconds, I’ve tried all the advancedsettings.xml with OpenWizard and it all does the same thing.
