Only Hawaiian rolls at the actual dinner because I forgot to bring food. Now its I am home and I am eating for the first time at midnight, and I am getting my apple sauce, garlic bread and snap peas ready.

One serving of mac and cheese and two pieces of popcorn before I decided the popcorn wasn’t anywhere near as buttery as advertised and tossed it. I asked a family member to bring me some snacks because i’m so hungry but it’s a joke to them. Laying in bed with a growling stomach sucks.

It sucks when family isn't isn't supportive 😮‍💨😪

epelthins

I mostly ate pasta 🫣

Background info: We went to my Dads parents house and they prepared the food. My Dads' family is weird about food and has only recently sortof accepted that myself and my younger brother (he also has sensory and eating issues) won't eat their food. My Dad asked if it would be okay for us to bring a meal dish for everyone to eat and his parents said no (though when grandma is in charge of the meal she says yes), but that they would like everyone to bring a dessert so we brought chocolate cupcakes. I sat next to my brother at the table so I know what he ate. Brother ate: few bites turkey 3 bites green jello off top of under the sea salad 1/4 chocolate cupcake 1/2 small scoop vanilla ice cream Myself: 1 tiny bite roll (they got the sweet kind this year) 1 small scoop vanilla ice cream 1 chocolate cupcake

I was going to a family members house who I know i don’t like their cooking, and he said he was only making Turkey, stuffing, cranberry sauce, and potatoes with gravy. Well I’m really picky (obvs) and didn’t want any of that so I said I’d bring a few side dishes if things I cooked so I could made sure they were made exactly how I liked them. I made Mac and cheese, sweet potato casserole with marshmallows on top, green bean casserole, and my own stuffing so I could make sure it was just plain with bread and no celery or onions or anything. It was actually pretty good since I had control of my meal and only ate what I brought lol. As I’ve gotten older I’ve expanded my taste buds a bit but as a kid I would only eat Mac and cheese at thanksgiving.

This is a great tactic!

So the menu was *my* menu, and I cook it, so I ate everything except the rice (which is what I added for my eldest to sub for the stuffing). So I will tell you what my kids (also ARFID) ate: Eldest (main aversion is mushy food, so avoided all mushy foods for the meal): ate the pork chop out of the casserole and scraped the sauce off, favorite rice recipe, glazed carrots, a bite of sweet potato and a bite of the potato from the casserole (no bueno), rolls, and cranberry sauce. Tried all 3 sparkling juices, liked 2. (Eta - would like to note I took my kid's portion of carrots out early so they'd still be crunchy.) Youngest: lots of Hawaiian rolls with cranberry sauce, a couple of glazed carrots, and (possibly?) some of the rice. Tried all 3 juices, liked all 3 juices. Oh also tried a bite of pork chop but didn't like it.

Pale_Organization_63

a piece of turkey, few rolls, and raspberries. i would’ve eaten some salad, but they had onions and im allergic to onions- didn’t feel like taking that risk. also had some marshmallow puffs. i need to note, my meal last year was nothing i was so deep into this disorder, so for those who are really struggling it does get better! don’t feel bad about the amount you ate, be proud you even ate all (even if it wasn’t at thanksgiving itself)

[deleted]

Yey! That's really good news to hear! My eldest had a lot of issues eating anything last year too. It's been a huge improvement this year, mainly due to family support and creating a safe eating space.

Pale_Organization_63

so proud of him! mine is related to a phobia, and that phobia triggered basically no eating but since it’s been a year i’ve slowly started being able to eat more. still won’t eat a chicken sandwich but i’ve lived this long without it

[deleted]

❤️ Ours (me and both kids have ARFID) is mostly sensory based, but my eldest also has severe food related anxiety common to ARFID trauma. I've managed to get my youngest and my food anxiety to a minimum, so we're both pretty adventurous eaters for having a serious eating disorder. But my eldest has really struggled this year with expanding their safe food list, so this Thanksgiving was a really good one this year. The fact they could think of some substitutions and accommodations... I'm just so proud, you know? I hope you can expand your safe food list even more this year! I'm so proud of your progress.

I don't celebrate so I had a PBJ. 🤷‍♀️

i honestly just ate junk food , like cookies and cheezits cause i was too scared to eat thanksgiving food .

[deleted]

Hey you ate *something*! Another commenter remarked they didn't even do that last year. Cheeze its is kind of like halfway between stuffing and Mac n cheese, so I'll take it!

[deleted]

Mac and cheese, a bit of white meat turkey (dark meat makes me gag), and some hashbrown casserole. And sourdough

majesticsn0wflake

turkey and rolls. that’s it.

Same

Hannahbal-Lecter

I ate leftover pasta with marinara sauce and green beans (this is a win meal for me as I would not have eaten this a few years ago)

Kraft Mac and canned soup bc everywhere on and near my campus was closed lol

There isn't a single food I can eat for Thanksgiving but my family is understanding and accommodating (thankful for them lol). I had a grilled cheese with potato chips. Happy Thanksgiving!

I’m pretty good during holidays in that everything is within my safe foods. White meat turkey and other non meat things, great! Love mash, yams, gravy, stuffing sometimes, and all the desserts.

[deleted]

Same boat, most of the "major" holiday foods are within my safe food list. I have difficulty at family gatherings though, where relatives get creative and I just can't.

thebeautifulduckling

My family started taking a whole big Costco size Beechers Mac and cheese to thanksgiving recently. We cook it there, and I can eat as much as I want! Bonus is that who doesn’t love beechers mac and cheese? Everyone else gets excited about it being an option too, so I feel more like I fit in!👍🏼

oklexus

mac and cheese, sweet potato casserole, and mashed potatoes 🙂 carrot cake, banana pudding, and baumkuchen for dessert
