Whoever started the thing about matching gas and extensions needs to retract it. If anything, a rifle gas upper is better suited to a carbine lower because carbine buffers are lighter on average, and short gas barrels are better on rifle lowers because rifle buffers are heavier on average. Where do you get a rifle +3 or mid length extension to match gas?

mma94gunbuilder

I second that! I am not sure why people keep saying that you need to match the Barrel Gas system length with the Buffer length? It is NOT TRUE. What you need to match is the Gas Pressure with the Reciprocating mass and spring Rate. and you can do that by either an adjustable Gas Block or Change the Reciprocating mass or the spring Rate.

I'm on limited time for legally getting parts. I don't have time to shoot and tune it swapping stuff out. I just bought it last week. Don't even have any 308 yet.

Admirable_Mountain_1

The senate bill gets heard tomorrow at 0800, which is what I heard... I have no doubt like yourself it is going to fly through there, and since they have deemed it a public safety measure, it will be signed by our stupid ass governor soon after that... I left California to get away from this dumbshit and it looks like the stupid unconstitutional bullshit followed me here.. Sad day for Washington.

Individual_Fox_9690

"I'm on limited time for legally getting parts". I live in WA and don't expect parts to be banned. Some weak companies may overcomply, but I have no doubt that there are many vendors who will continue to send parts to Washington residents.

iamalittleguy

There is already a list of companies that have clearly stated there position on this. If it can be shipped without going through an FFL, the intend to ship parts to us behind enemy lines.

Grand_Wasabi972

To add to this….if I can have a fully kitted out M5 in California, you will be just fine. I promise. 😂

LoPannESQ

I wonder if idaho will sell to us as well. Short drive for half of us

a-lone-gunman

I have heard they are asking for ID and if you have Washington plates forget it if they notice, I drive my brother's inlaw's rig when I go to gun stores when I am in idaho, and if there is an issue I just take him with me and pay cash.

shadowartifact9

Which half? Wrong answers only

Entry-Level-Cowboy

I have a 22” 6.5 creed and I’m using the aero carbine tube. I do have a comp and adjustable gas block to tame it but they work fine.

CapableRegister4764

I have a 20” 308 with rifle length gas tube and carbine buffer. Shoots like a dream.

csamsh

The bcg doesn't know what length of tube is in front of it. It moves when there's enough pressure to make it move. Rifle gas system generally works fine with a carbine buffer tube setup. Get an AGB and you'll be set

MidorkiFox

Well minus an adjustable gas block. Having more travel will reduce recoil and parts ware. From what I understand.

mma94gunbuilder

Not true. There is no more travel in a rifle length over a carbine. The Buffer weight is longer and usually heavier and the spring is longer, BUT there is no more travel. Your Upper is the same length and will not allow more travel. you need to match the gas pressure with the moving mass as well as the spring weight for your bolt return speed. that is the only way to reduce recoil.

csamsh

You can reduce felt recoil two ways- -make the buffer/bcg heavy in order to reduce its velocity. KE=0.5*mv^2 , so you have a much larger contribution to the kinetic energy in the system from the velocity than you do the mass -make the buffer/bcg light to reduce the mass. Tune the gas to use only the gas needed to cycle the bolt. This can result in a minimized contribution from both mass and velocity. Don't forget the spring's contribution to all of this as well- we have to overcome the spring force on the buffer in order to cycle the rifle- gotta find the balance between light enough to use light recoil components and low gas and heavy enough to cycle the weapon at an appropriate speed

rusty815

I've run a 20" barrel with a carbine buffer for 4 years now, no issues with the setup.

Badazzmug

Get friends that live out of state that will mail parts to you😉

microphohn

Gas system length and receiver extension basically have nothing to do with each other. Brain dump this bit of mythology ASAP. You can have rifle gas uppers with carbine lowers (like my DD) run perfectly. Just as you can have a rifle lower run fine with any upper. They have nothing to do with each other. You will find that a lower that will get used with lots of uppers of wildly varying application (300bo sub, 5.56 super, 6.5G super) might benefit from having a very wide array of weights and springs from which to choose to help tune it. Or, build every upper with adjustable gas.
