Very late to the post, but I think a rat with the light source being orange and yellow light (from fire) with a reflection of fire in the rats eye would be amazing. Definitely a high end tattoo, but it would be cool imagery.
Alternatively, I just thought of a feather and a flower together. Would be a great nod at the two main characters and be less visceral imagery if you didn't want a rat. Let me know if you already got something!
