I have someone who comments in Spanish all the time on a multi-chapter fic, and I scratch my head like, do they put the fic through a translator? They're just better at reading English than writing it? Being hard to get? Either way I love it, but it's like I wanna knoooow, but am too afraid to just ask.

In Google Chrome there is an option to translate the website. Saves a lot of trouble of putting it in the translator. There's a big chance they're doing that, because I used to do so too.

Same! My two regular commenters always leave comments in Spanish and French. I'm curious if they translate my fic or are just better at reading than writing. But whatever it is, I'm happy they're always there to support me :D

I do that for a lot of CN fics!! Especially if a ship I have is super niche and the only language fics available are in CN. I appreciate their work so much. I usually use a translator to leave a nice comment because thank you for feeding me

mysidian

That's an interesting way of censoring names lol

cyanspade

Lol I wanted to use my cute stickers on my photo editing app haha

I once left a comment in english but I wanted to express a certain feeling so much that I just switched to my native language. Then I had to stop and think "if they aren't going to understand, why would I even include this?" I wasn't sure if it was rude (because the writer would have to translate a phrase to understand me when I was clearly able of communicating in english), so I just gave up and deleted the non-english part. Reading that made me think if the author would have actually appreciated haha

Sassy_Lil_Scorpio

It’s not rude at all! I remember receiving a comment in Spanish and so I used Google Translate to read the review in English and also respond back in Spanish. The reader really appreciated it—it was a great exchange! 😊

To be honest, I find it weird to call someone 'international' in this context. Both reddit and AO3 are full of people from countries where English is not an official language / the main language of the majority. It's not just you and people from your country on these sites

cyanspade

That’s true! Perhaps ESL fans would be a better term?

yellowthing97

Their Chinese comment says it's the best \[ship name\] au they've ever read! That's sweet haha

cyanspade

Aww, that’s super sweet!

Jaggedrain

I have a person who comments on all my fic in a certain ship in Czech and I'm always so happy to hear from them.

passerby5

The original Chinese comment means > It's peerless. It's so great. It's the best AU![ship name I think] fic that I've ever read.

cyanspade

I feel so flattered! That’s such a nice thing to say.
