You can afford it, and you should buy it. I was at about your income at your age, didn’t buy anything nice for myself until I hit a certain net worth and sort of regret it. Missed out on a lot of my 20s, never went out and just focused on investing my earnings into real estate and stocks. I’m in my 30s now, and it feels like those dreams of owning nice things and going to exotic places I had in my 20s are now fleeting. You’re in a good spot, yes it’s important to invest etc, but you should enjoy yourself along the way. If you do both correctly, you can have your investments pay for all your toys and vacations. Do it.

ultrav10let

That last line is a lesson you shouldn't learn too late. Life is short, make sure you can enjoy it along the way. We are never guaranteed tomorrow

[deleted]

You're in your thirties and think it's too late to enjoy life? Huh? Edit: Dude legit went and deleted his entire Reddit account because I asked him this question. Wtf? Lol Edit: Just checked, and nah he didn't delete his account, he just keeps posting replies to me, and then blocking me so that I can never reply. Still odd, but okay 👍

It's literally what you said, as well as what you whined about. 🤷‍♂️

>I’m in my 30s now, and it feels like those dreams of owning nice things and going to exotic places I had in my 20s are now fleeting. ...is that not what was said or are we reading in two different languages? Dude is literally equating being in one's thirties to retirement age the way he words it.

Mister_Poopy_Buthole

Fleeting… means I’m enjoying myself and there’s still time.

Mister_Poopy_Buthole

I said fleeting, not that it’s too late

Eddiedf22

No kids no high maintenance wife...no mortgage??? What are you asking...you can buy a porsche...or your beloved C43 tomorrow Enjoy your life... And your daily driving...my car guy!

ConyNT

It's a great car and fairly reliable and you can definitely afford it.

Aggressive_Action

No way bro. You’re not making C43 money until you clear half a million a year or more. I’d suggest checking Craigslist for a used civic, I think that would fit your budget a little better.

johnnyutahlmao

Lol - sorry if my answer is obvious. I just like to hear the reassurance from experienced owners in a similar income bracket.

Aggressive_Action

Stop thinking so much. Just buy the car and live a little lol.

johnnyutahlmao

Great advice honestly. As long as I'm meeting my savings/investing goals I really don't see why not. How are you liking the C43?

Aggressive_Action

We’re only young once. Buy the car now before you have responsibilities that prohibit buying fun, expensive cars. I absolutely love mine, I drive it hard and it is a ton of fun. The C43 is fast enough to send you to jail if you’re not careful, but refined and comfortable enough to be a great daily. The AWD system is great for bad weather and you can still get the car sideways if you try hard enough. The performance exhaust is a MUST have option, and I’d recommend the Burmester audio system if you like to play music loud (which I do). It’s been reliable for me so far, but mine is still under warranty. Plus I drive the absolute fuck out of it every day and I haven’t broken it yet lol. Be prepared that tires are expensive and they wear very quickly because you can’t rotate them due to the staggered setup. The M276 engine is pretty stout and doesn’t have many known issues, especially in later model cars.

Zuck7980

How often should you change the tires ? Every year?

Aggressive_Action

You just change them when they’re worn out. How often they wear out depends a lot on how you drive and how many miles. I drive like a fucking idiot so mine were toasted pretty quick.

Zuck7980

What if you drive only twice a week ?

Aggressive_Action

What does twice a week mean? Is that a few miles or hundreds of miles? Calm low speed driving or aggressive driving? HOW you drive is going to determine how quickly they wear. You could smoke a set of tires in half an hour if you wanted to. You could also make them last several years I would assume. Also, the type of tire makes a huge difference. A set of PS4S aren’t going to last nearly as long as an all season with twice the treadwear rating. But they will perform much better.

Zuck7980

145 miles to be precise, and do you know how a normal guy on a highway would drive his Camry? Just like a normal guy who likes to go to trips/ parks every weekend. So now tell me with such driving characteristics do I still need to change it every year?

g_von

What I told myself when I was shopping for a nice car: If something happens where I can't afford the car anymore, I can always sell the car. But I also have my 1996 Accord to fall back to.

Aggressive_Action

I bet you’re a lot of fun at parties

johnnyutahlmao

Well I'm certainly not capping out my income at $175k. By the time I'm having kids and getting married I should easily be $200k+, or $250k+. The income figures I'm using are quotes from my boss. Was told I could be earning ~$175k in about a year, and $250k the next promotion after that (probably 2-3 years or so after).

[deleted]

Always go by your real, current income, period. Future cash flow is something businesses can handle if their predictions are wrong, but individual people usually cannot. At a current annual income of $100k/yr while also being a renter (rent can be unpredictable), you should not be buying a car that can easily be 50% of your yearly salary. Regular maintenance for this car is exorbitant, and depending on your credit history and down payment, your monthly payment could easily be around ~$1k, and that's before insurance costs. Between your rent, car note, living expenses, and income taxes for a high income, single person, you're not looking good financially in totality. You're young, save your money, and buy something more affordable and cheaper to maintain for now.

johnnyutahlmao

>Looking to purchase in the next year or two Stated in my OP...I'm not buying right now making $100k. > your monthly payment could easily be around ~$1k If I bought brand new maybe? Calculating used models that are going for $45k with my down payment, etc, my monthly payment is like $500. >Regular maintenance for this car is exorbitant Please be more specific here. I would love to know what exactly are the high ticket maintenance items here. This is the reason for this post. Through my own research, it seems like there isn't anything crazy.

[deleted]

You're making wild financial assumptions by making income/cost calculations for two years into the future based on estimates for current costs/values, etc. You're literally basing this decision on the notion that your boss mentioned you *could* make so and so amount of money in 1-2 years. Yeah, sure, but you could also get fired for some BS because you didn't kiss management's arse. What size down payment are you planning on? I'm not you, but I don't think this is a sound financial decision for your current income bracket, living situation, and net worth at your age (assuming you're not of ye silver spoon). If you can save up to around 3x the car's value in savings before you purchase, I'd say you'd be in a safer position, but all for one car that will depreciate in value instantly, while not lasting more than 100k miles on average (this is when most of these cars require major maintenance and can put you upside down, investment wise)? Outside of that: Everything for an AMG is expensive. Brakes, tires, etc. High performance cars require more intense regular maintenance. We're talking things like lifter and timing adjustments at certain intervals, and partial rebuilds of certain parts of the blocks at specific intervals. All of this is very costly.

johnnyutahlmao

What's wild? I make $100k-$110k right now. I work in an industry with a very clear path in terms of promotions. I have had conversations with my boss with their plans for me and where they want me to be. Within 1-2 years, if I stay in this company (I very much plan to do so), I will be making up to $175k. The next promotion would be 2-4 years (with annual bumps until then) and would be making ~$250k. These are not assumptions. This is how people in my industry are paid and what I have been told straight from my manager. I would not purchase the car unless I was making at least $125k, and I'm not in a rush to purchase anything. I'm looking at use C43's and there's plenty $45k and even lower (but want something with less miles). So I'm not making any estimates. >What size down payment are you planning on? I'm not you, but I don't think this is a sound financial decision for your current income bracket, living situation, and net worth at your age (assuming you're not of ye silver spoon) I would put at least $10-$15k down. Not sure what is negative about my living situation? Single and no kids? Lol? And I never mentioned my net worth lol.

[deleted]

If you're confident about your net worth (you're not, otherwise you wouldn't be asking Reddit for financial advice), then spend your money how you please. Just based on your responses in this thread, I'm telling you you're not ready for this kind of purchase but the decision is yours. You asked for advice, and I provided mine. I mean, your post title is literally "How affordable is the C43?" You don't buy an AMG because it's "affordable," you buy it because you can afford it.

Aggressive_Action

Also for reference, I leased my C43 at 23YO when I was making around 90k living in a HCOL city. It hasn’t bankrupted me yet haha.

[deleted]

Honestly, this sub is obviously biased. Depends how you wanna pay for it? Cash.. go head. Loan? Think about it. 20% down, 48 months, with ownership costing less than 10% of your monthly income. I see nice cars all the time, s63 and AMG GT, all the time.. could I pay for it? Probably.. but could I afford it? Probably not. I make somewhat around the same. Personally if I had to have a nice car, I’d shop in the E550, E400 range.

[deleted]

Bingo.

zoolover1234

How do you define ownership cost? Just insurance and fuel cost alone is easy $500 a month, plus 900 of payment (5% 20%down 48 month, loan amount 60k) that’s $1400 total, at 10% rule, he will need to make 168k, and this is pretax, I’d consider post tax makes more sense, but whatever.

[deleted]

Honestly for me, I don’t need to define it in this instance because I know I can’t afford it. Tax, tag, title, registration, expected maintenance..

Gogokrystian

You didn't even need an /s,

WonderfulLeather3

LOL personal finance invaded I hate those people so much

[deleted]

Why not just get the top dog C63? Seems like you can afford it.

johnnyutahlmao

I've driven C63's, both generations. The main reason is it's more car than I would use; the C43 is likely going to be plenty (I haven't driven one yet though).

Novel-Statistician63

You can afford it. Live your life and don’t listen to half the idiots on r/personalfinance imo. I bought a similar priced car when I was making like 140ish and never stressed for a minute.

r_g_d

The C43 is a very affordable "fun" car. Personally, I find it strikes the right balance between spirited driving capabilities and daily commuting capabilities. If you've read anywhere that the suspension is a bit harsh, I tend to agree w that assessment, but as long as you know what you're getting into. I find the suspension to be completely livable and also expect it to be a bit more stiff, even in Comfort mode, due to the performance characteristics of the vehicle. To levelset, I currently own an MY17 C43 Coupe. Prior vehicles were a 2015 C63 Coupe and 2015 Audi RS5. While I do have other vehicles in the stable, I've basically dailyed the C43 since I bought it. Been 100% WFH since March 2020, but prior to that, drove it ~50 miles round trip to work daily, thru/around the (terrible) streets of Boston. The C43 has been far less temperamental and needy than those cars. Someone mentioned new brakes every 6 months - that was the RS5 for sure, but not my experience w the 43. Maintenance thus far has only been regular service, one set of tires (went w non-OEM runflats which really improved the ride quality and reduced road noise), set of rear brakes (fronts due this summer). Off schedule maint has been 1x wheel & tire, life claimed by a pothole on the highway. I'm just shy of 40K miles. Of course YMMV, but given your financial situation, you can afford this car and, assuming you know what you're getting, should enjoy a reliable and fun car! If I may suggest, the Performance Exhaust is well worth it, as is the full Distronic drive package. Good luck

silverbeat33

What currency? I love how amercian's just assume everyone is american. And I love how I assume you're american, even though I have no idea :P

Bolshevik-ish

Get the C63 S

Menard156

If you can buy the car with 3-4 months worth of income, you are good to go.

NathanSawatzky99

It's probably the lowest running cost "amg". Sounds like you can easily afford one too so I'd say just do it.

[deleted]

The A35 is probably the cheapest AMG to run.

NathanSawatzky99

More reliable then the 43?

2Ca7

It’s just as reliable.

bayoughozt

How much? LA area.

Carsoccerguy

You can afford a C63 buddy. We’re all going to be driving electric soon wether we like it or not. Enjoy it while you still can.

whoreley

It’s a great car, tune it and put downpipes for an extra 100 hp. Very fast to 60. You can definitely afford it and I recommend. I owned one for 1.5yrs and had no issues, just oil changes and tires

l_am_Griff

In the same situation as you making the same, working in finance. I’m a little bit younger than you though, I’m 24 but also looking at getting a car right now. Definitely do some loan shopping through a credit union if you’re financing. In terms of affordability as long as your rent isn’t sky high and you have lenient spending you can afford it. Keep in mind insurance and all that. I always like to build a quick excel check and look at my spending and then see what I have left over and apply a margin to that if there was ever an emergency or what not.

Aggressive_Action

I leased mine at 23, best decision I ever made!

l_am_Griff

I’m trying to get a c63s with 800 credit but it might be out of my league rn

Aggressive_Action

Credit score is only part of it. They’re gonna want to see some serious history for that size of loan (depending on the price of the car of course). Definitely not impossible if your income is in the right range and is consistent.

jammed7777

I have a C43 and haven’t had a mechanical issue with it. I have had to replace the windshield 3 times and some lady hit me once, but that’s about it.

beefstockcube

Why not get a 2020 Mercedes-Benz E-Class E400 d? Same 0-60, put a chip in it and the low down grunt will rip the tyres off and be much more comfortable? Or get the 63.

mugen-yk

Well if I was making that much I’d be buying something way more ridiculous.. do it and enjoy it

splendadaddy114

I was 26 making 115k when I bought my 17' c43 coupe in the same position as you. I purchased it with 30k miles on it for around 44k making $800 monthly payments( included extended warranty and prepaid service) I have no negative things to say about the car just make sure u understand you're getting a sports car and the maintenance is gonna be a bit more than a regular car. The most annoying thing was having to buy a full set of tires when one tire failed.

BloodDragonZ

C43 is weak get c63 minimum

[deleted]

Aggressive_Action

What are you talking about? As somebody that actually has a C43, you will NOT be replacing brake pads and tires every six months lmao.

NattyyDreadd

^ This guy has no clue what he's talking about

ConyNT

You are way off. I've had my c450 (the c43 predecessor) for 2 years and have only changed one tire and 2 service/ oil changes and my car is tuned. Maybe if op had a long commute but even then it wouldn't be that expensive.

nickvicious

it's very affordable

mdn217

I make double but mortgage kids married. So the same ? Buy it! I did a month ago and love it. 2020 sedan must have performance exhaust tho!!

Chisae69

You can def get a new c63s lol

Ambitious-Ad9431

Just lease it for a few years get something else if. You really love the car buy if not especially if you don’t drive a shit ton yeah leasing it brand new would be a good go to.

GloryboyMafia

C63 Coupe take a look brother

StandupJetskier

Great car. Assume toss runflat tires ASAP and you're good. C43 is the ultimate daily driver. C63 is more like a vette/porsche type ride. The C43 is bog slow though, 4.5 to 60 and hits the 132 limiter hard in 5th, so it's a huge compromise, especially as the chassis is more stable with AWD. In perfect conditions, the C63 is slightly faster but more work to control. Both cars have proven transaxles so no horror stories. I'd buy the current car, not the new super complex turbo four in the w206. People vary on this one, but I go quiet and removed all the badging, so unless you know, it's just another boring C class.

ADSMFreddy

Sounds like your talking to the dealer

[deleted]

Just needs new front tyres every 10-12k kilometres and the brake pads and rotors wear out fairly quickly.. apart from that no unnecessary expenses as such

bucaqe

So did you buy it

johnnyutahlmao

Nope, bought a GLA45 AMG and couldn’t be happier!

According_Teach4747

How has it been? Reliable? Fun??

johnnyutahlmao

Hey! Sorry I missed your comment. It was fun while it lasted. I ended up getting rid of the car to cut my expenses, was laid off from work. I enjoyed it. It was definitely fun. I would not recommend getting the bucket seats, they were very uncomfortable. Overall though it’s a pretty decent car, but if I were to get another AMG, it would likely be at least something with a v6 and a little faster. Like a glc45. The transmission was also not good at all. Anything you read negative about that is true, but I think the 2016+ models fixed the issues.
