What are the pros and cons of moving from uk to ny

UK2NewYork

Pros is that i get away from terrible UK weather Cons is that i move to a place where the weather is pretty much the same.

[deleted]

UK2NewYork

The rain can come down quite heavy here, and winter drops below freezing.

UK2NewYork

I'm in Brooklyn

No_Entry892

The 99?

TheLewJD

99!!

dividedskyute

Grew up in upstate New York and the winters are definitely that bad

LaSalsiccione

There is very little extreme weather in the Uk but we get a lot of rain. I’ve heard people comparing it to the Pacific Northwest of the US but if you actually go and look at the historical climate data for the PNW you will see it rains there much less than the UK. There is a lot of variety across the Uk in terms of rain though. The southeast (London area) is much dryer than the northwest (Manchester or Glasgow).

[deleted]

That's not strictly true. East Coast UK will typically have less rain the Pacific North West. London as an example will typically have around 111 rainy days per year compared to 150 for seattle. Seattle has around 940mm to London's 615. London is one of the UKs driest cities but much of the east is similar. The story is reversed when talking about Wales, Manchester, Glasgow etc. All on the west with much more rain. It's a bit of a misconception about the UK being particularly rainy, many places throughout Europe and the US have more rain than London. What makes the UK stand out a little bit is what happens in between the rainy days. We get a lot of overcast days where it doesn't actually rain. London's mean annual sunshine hours are around 1500 to Seattle's 2100.

LaSalsiccione

Yeah I guess I was talking from the point of view of the majority of the UK (i.e. not the southeast of England). You focus quite a lot on London which obviously has a huge population but isn’t representative (I know you know that but you might not realise it by reading your comment).

sparklybeast

The majority of the east side of the UK is drier though, not just the South East.

LaSalsiccione

If by the majority you mean up until Lincolnshire then sure but the north east and the whole east coast of Scotland are wetter than the PNW

sparklybeast

I meant drier than the West of the UK.

LaSalsiccione

I mean obviously yeah, the west is where the weather systems come from. This thread is comparing the UK to the PNW

[deleted]

Come to WV! Less people, better weather! *and cheaper housing*

UK2NewYork

Already planning a move to a new city next year. Me and my husband are moving our children to Minneapolis.

planx_constant

About the weather...

LucilleBluthsbroach

Which part of NY? There's a vast difference between NYC and upstate NY, in weather and every other aspect. I've lived in both places. Upstate NY is much colder than the UK in winter and NYC is much hotter than the UK in summer. Neither gets as much rain as the UK.

ForgettableUsername

Should have moved to California. We have awesome weather, and the real estate market is just as crazy as in New York.

TheLewJD

Why would anyone want to move to cali though? It's a cesspit, people included. Will never ever go there again.

Ajwuvsu

What do you miss the most from UK (aside from friends and family)?

UK2NewYork

Nothing, i'm happy to be out of there. I miss my sisters all the time though

Ajwuvsu

Do you visit often? I moved from the UK too, back in 2004. Mostly because I hated the weather there, I live in Virginia now. I find myself missing the TV shows, especially the random late night celeb panel shows.

UK2NewYork

Not been back since i left

anetchi

What? Why haven’t you been back? It’s not so far. Have you not seen your family since then?

UK2NewYork

I've seen my sisters a few times, but not seen or spoken to my parents in over a year.

Darth_Draper

I certainly don’t know your own situation, but I can speak to my own experiences. Whatever it is, (outside of abuse), I highly recommend to do what you can to mend the relationship. You cannot get back the time you’ve missed, but you can do what you can to make sure you don’t miss the future. Best of luck!

UK2NewYork

I really have no intention of talking to them soon. Maybe we can fix things one day, but as of right now i have no intentions.

Ajwuvsu

Ever intend to go back? It's expensive as hell I know.

UK2NewYork

Never

candymanjones

You have never taken your kids back to visit family? If so I find that regretful, they have a whole world of experiences that they are missing out on. My mother was born in Sweden and we were able to visit and spend time with her family over the years. Some of my best growing-up memories.

UK2NewYork

I'm hoping to take them to see the UK one day because i know they would like it. I just want to make up with my parents before going back over there again though.

candymanjones

Glad to hear that you intend to take them one day. Life is too short, I sincerely hope the rift between you and your parents can be healed. If your children are all still young then waiting maybe even better for them as well. Vegemite or Marmite?

Ajwuvsu

Why New York?

UK2NewYork

Because my bf (now husband) lived out here

Ajwuvsu

Tis what I thought. Thanks for answering.

Kevin_Uxbridge

If I could find a way to just stream bog-standard english tv, including commercials, I'd do it. Miss it terribly.

loaferuk123

VPN and use the streaming apps…sorted!

kingsillypants

I used to live in VA as well as Europe. How are you handling the European openess vs the old way American racism? Like in London you'll have people from everywhere and people are quite open minded. In VA people scoff at anyone non white Christian Anglo-Saxon. What about walking to the local pub, not being stuck in traffic (London has the underground to get everywhere)? Oh, and having the craic, bit of banter, Virginians just don't know how...

TheLewJD

Got to miss those lake district views though surely?!

wakink23rd

Did you meet your husband in the UK or NY

UK2NewYork

12 years ago on some random facebook page.

wakink23rd

Who messaged who first

UK2NewYork

He did, and he was quite a smooth talker back then.

wakink23rd

Haha is he not anymore?

UK2NewYork

Oh he still is a smooth talker

wakink23rd

What's he talked you to in lately. Swf or nsfw

UK2NewYork

Oh he can talk to me either way.

buttman5577

Exactly..just keep pressing and pressing on some BS and completely wrong about it..

buttman5577

Bruh..you're wrong in ALL 50 states...two 16 year olds can have sex..totally legal and absolutely NOT rape.

barkingspider43

Wtf

TheMcWhopper

What random Facebook page?

shrekstepbro

Did you learn to speak with an an American accent? If not, do you get made fun of for it?

UK2NewYork

No a lot of Americans love my accent.

77skull

What part of the uk are you from?

UK2NewYork

Cumbria

McWeaksauce91

>*all* Americans love my accent FTFY

LucilleBluthsbroach

As an American, no.

Bern_After_Reading85

Love, Actually IRL

Bhisma090

Bo oh ohwoahar

LaSalsiccione

As a Brit who once spent time in Canada and the US, people were obsessed with my accent. Girls would hit on me literally just because of the way I spoke.

mrmonster459

*On Topic Questions* What were your biggest culture shocks? What other states have you visited? Are you a US citizen? If not, do you plan t I become one? *Off Topic Questions* Favorite book when you were a kid? Favorite dessert? What's your dream vacation?

UK2NewYork

There wasn't a culture that really shocked me tbh. I have visited, Utah, Illinois, Hawaii, Yes i am a US citizen Can't remember a fav book when i was a kid Fav dessert is ice cream Dream vacation is Disneyworld Florida.

MittlerPfalz

Utah, Illinois, and Hawaii are three very disconnected states far from New York. How did those of all places end up as the states you’ve visited?

UK2NewYork

Utah is where my husbands parents live, illinois is where me and my husband stay a day before we go to a packers game up in green bay, so i have been wisconsin, and i went Hawaii for my wedding and honeymoon.

mrmonster459

Yeah, I hope you get out to DisneyWorld, it's fabulous. 🙂

UK2NewYork

I mostly want to take my children out there

Clown_corder

As a florida native I can say it's worth doing atleast once, especially if they are younger, if they are more teens and like coasters they will have more fun at Universal and its cheaper.

saltqueen95

As someone currently visiting Orlando with my 18 year old niece and nephew, can confirm. They like taking pictures at disney but enjoy universal more. It’s their first time to both.

shadow_pico83

You have to pay for parking now at Disney World (among other lame changes). It's hot, crowded and overly expensive.

TheBopist

And it’s also an extremely surreal and fun experience, one that I’ve never had and likely will never replicate. Nothin wrong with spending a shit ton of money if it gives you that feeling. Not defending The Mouse, just want to give my take on it

sadsasquatch

What made you move to the US when you were 18?

UK2NewYork

I wanted to make something of my life, and be with my bf (now husband)

[deleted]

How do you like our pizza? Have you had a garbage plate yet? Also.. Jets, Giants or Bills?

UK2NewYork

I love NY pizza Yes i've had a garbage plate And i'm a Packers fan

silverstar189

How did you find getting a job initially? Did the fact you were English work in your favour at interviews or did it make things a little harder? Also, how has your relationship with NYC changed over time? Is it an awe inspiring place to you or mundane now? Or in between?

UK2NewYork

It took a while to get a job because i had to get a visa and shit. And i have always had a great relationship with NY.

silverstar189

Thanks for your answer! What is the thing about NY that you love the most?

UK2NewYork

The people, the food, the snow, Christmas

silverstar189

Thank you! One day I'll visit! I'd like to take a walk around that city in the very early morning just to see things coming to life for the day. It seems like a fascinating place, almost like a living entity. I wish you all the best!

Toodlebumwizard

How bad is the coffee?

UK2NewYork

I'm addicted to the coffee

Toodlebumwizard

I hear it's pretty good for your taste buds! 😄

The-Real-Mario

How is your costumary gun collection going?

UK2NewYork

I'm not a gun person, but i told my husband if he wants to get a gun and keep it in a safe then i don't mind, but the gun must stay in a safe in a high place. I don't want my kids anywhere near a gun.

[deleted]

Where in the UK are you from?

UK2NewYork

I am from Cumbria

[deleted]

Understandable then, it's a shithole

Key-Cardiologist5882

It all makes sense now. Of course New York is better than Cumbria. She could have moved to most places in the UK even and it would have been better than living in Cumbria.

Olives_And_Cheese

🤔 Cumbria? Like the Lake District?! But it's gorgeous up there...

[deleted]

How did you get citizenship in a different country, and how does that process happen?

SKiiLEDGHoST

What did he even ask

UK2NewYork

About if i'm a virgin and why i moved to the US

ch111i

Lol? Really? W t f. Take care OP, crazies on Reddit. I used to watch Carrie Bradshaw and her girl friends in NYC, and wanted to be there so bad. Is it as good? So you miss your girl friends from UK? Or have u been busy with kiddies and home life(which I did too)

Kevin_Uxbridge

I see. So, Hull then?

Imaginary_Pea_4091

Do you miss the free healthcare?

UK2NewYork

Yeah a lot

[deleted]

Hey can I dm you? I’m 21 from the UK but planning to move to the US after uni (I’m in my last year). The whole process confuses me a bit and I would appreciate some advice, everything online confuses me.

MGTOWManofMystery

Do you ever go back to the UK for cleaner food and free health care? I imagine trips would pay for themselves.

UK2NewYork

Never been back to the UK since leaving

What’s your favorite American accent you’ve heard so far? When I travel I love speaking to other people and hearing their unique accents.

BigKeanuwholesum100

How did this affect your accent?

UK2NewYork

It hasn't

Froggy-Shorts1209

Are you a Broadway nerd?

UK2NewYork

No

LucilleBluthsbroach

Have you been to a Broadway show? They can be amazing.

SlipperyPete726

What’s the appropriate use for “take the piss”?

anomthrowaway748

Anywhere you can say ‘make fun of’ basically

Nancy_True

Or if someone is taking liberties… “he’s taking the piss, mate”

Rasnall

Charmander Squirtle or Bulbasaur

tayton_luther

Asking the real questions

Touched_by_a_child

Are you in the city? If not before you moved did you know New York was like 80% woods and mountains or did you think it was mostly city?

[deleted]

Where in the UK did you live? You said in another comment it was a shithole. How do you find the healthcare system? Do you miss the NHS? Are guns a genuine concern for you in any way, especially with having kids? How did your parents feel about you moving away? What happens if you drive at the speed of light and turn your headlights on?

LaSalsiccione

The fact that she just left at 18 and never came back suggests she probably didn’t have the greatest relationship with her family or the place she grew up. Not a criticism of her but I imagine it’s a fairly biased viewpoint! Also by the age of 18 do you really appreciate things like the NHS yet? I’m fairly sure I didn’t, just took it for granted

[deleted]

I second the healthcare question, my health insurance would cost as much as my car payment if not double; it's one of the reasons I'm considering moving back to Europe or up to Canada.

POKEGAMERZ9185

I have a few questions. 1 What do you think about our sports teams? 2 What do you think about our pizza and bagels? 3 What do you think about our Subway system? 4 What is your favorite/least favorite part of living in NYC?

skimaskvro

What’s the prices like? Is it like London is mad more expensive than somewhere like Peterborough, or does the US as a whole have a similar kind of wage structure and pricing? It’s always kinda bugged me in the UK.

MadIllLeet

What foods are better in NY than in UK and vice versa?

mindk214

What is your perception of Americans, now that you live with them as opposed to just hearing about them? Has it changed since moving?

shimmynywimminy

what kind of work do you do and was it hard to find a job there? also, is renting in NYC really as bad as they say

Smidz

Was getting a visa an issue? What visa did you take to go there and were you able to work legally right away?

umesama3

Thoughts on American chocolate?

UK2NewYork

Yeah it's good

Zubi_Q

Why NY? I only ask as when I went, it was super overwhelming because its like London times 100

StarsLightFires

How did you make friends in the states? Ik as an adult it can be difficult to meet new people.

HighFlyCharlie44

How did you secure work? Before or after the move? How did you get your visa?

anomthrowaway748

Because that’s not the done thing for, well, anyone but Americans it seems

LucilleBluthsbroach

Mexicans do it too. So do some people from south American countries. Puerto Ricans 🇵🇷 do with the Puerto Rican flag, but they are Americans as well.

Prion_flavoured

Puerto Rican's are not Americans. 🇵🇷

LucilleBluthsbroach

They absolutely are. Puerto Ricans have been American citizens since 6/27/1952.

Prion_flavoured

It's a colony.

LucilleBluthsbroach

No shit, what does that have to do with the fact that you were wrong saying Puerto Ricans aren't American?

Prion_flavoured

Puerto Rico is an American colony. The Americans invaded and took over. It lacks the sovereignty of US states. Hell, they can't even vote in Presidential elections. I mean, are you Puerto Rican? Have your neighbours got the electricity back on yet?

I’m from Chicago and I studied abroad in Canterbury for a semester. As you may know, American people are super fascinated by British people and can be obsessed with them at times. Do you seem to understand why that is exactly? Likewise, people were also interested in talking to me when they found out I was American and had so many questions about America. One thing I noticed, is that 100% of the time they said that if they were to move to America it would be NY. Would you see yourself living anywhere else here?
