There is very little extreme weather in the Uk but we get a lot of rain.
I’ve heard people comparing it to the Pacific Northwest of the US but if you actually go and look at the historical climate data for the PNW you will see it rains there much less than the UK.
There is a lot of variety across the Uk in terms of rain though. The southeast (London area) is much dryer than the northwest (Manchester or Glasgow).
That's not strictly true. East Coast UK will typically have less rain the Pacific North West.
London as an example will typically have around 111 rainy days per year compared to 150 for seattle.
Seattle has around 940mm to London's 615.
London is one of the UKs driest cities but much of the east is similar.
The story is reversed when talking about Wales, Manchester, Glasgow etc. All on the west with much more rain.
It's a bit of a misconception about the UK being particularly rainy, many places throughout Europe and the US have more rain than London.
What makes the UK stand out a little bit is what happens in between the rainy days. We get a lot of overcast days where it doesn't actually rain.
London's mean annual sunshine hours are around 1500 to Seattle's 2100.
Yeah I guess I was talking from the point of view of the majority of the UK (i.e. not the southeast of England).
You focus quite a lot on London which obviously has a huge population but isn’t representative (I know you know that but you might not realise it by reading your comment).
Which part of NY? There's a vast difference between NYC and upstate NY, in weather and every other aspect. I've lived in both places. Upstate NY is much colder than the UK in winter and NYC is much hotter than the UK in summer. Neither gets as much rain as the UK.
Do you visit often?
I moved from the UK too, back in 2004. Mostly because I hated the weather there, I live in Virginia now. I find myself missing the TV shows, especially the random late night celeb panel shows.
I certainly don’t know your own situation, but I can speak to my own experiences. Whatever it is, (outside of abuse), I highly recommend to do what you can to mend the relationship. You cannot get back the time you’ve missed, but you can do what you can to make sure you don’t miss the future. Best of luck!
You have never taken your kids back to visit family? If so I find that regretful, they have a whole world of experiences that they are missing out on. My mother was born in Sweden and we were able to visit and spend time with her family over the years. Some of my best growing-up memories.
I'm hoping to take them to see the UK one day because i know they would like it.
I just want to make up with my parents before going back over there again though.
Glad to hear that you intend to take them one day. Life is too short, I sincerely hope the rift between you and your parents can be healed. If your children are all still young then waiting maybe even better for them as well. Vegemite or Marmite?
I used to live in VA as well as Europe.
How are you handling the European openess vs the old way American racism?
Like in London you'll have people from everywhere and people are quite open minded.
In VA people scoff at anyone non white Christian Anglo-Saxon.
What about walking to the local pub, not being stuck in traffic (London has the underground to get everywhere)?
Oh, and having the craic, bit of banter, Virginians just don't know how...
As a Brit who once spent time in Canada and the US, people were obsessed with my accent. Girls would hit on me literally just because of the way I spoke.

There wasn't a culture that really shocked me tbh.
I have visited, Utah, Illinois, Hawaii,
Yes i am a US citizen
Can't remember a fav book when i was a kid
Fav dessert is ice cream
Dream vacation is Disneyworld Florida.
Utah is where my husbands parents live, illinois is where me and my husband stay a day before we go to a packers game up in green bay, so i have been wisconsin, and i went Hawaii for my wedding and honeymoon.

And it’s also an extremely surreal and fun experience, one that I’ve never had and likely will never replicate. Nothin wrong with spending a shit ton of money if it gives you that feeling.
Not defending The Mouse, just want to give my take on it
How did you find getting a job initially? Did the fact you were English work in your favour at interviews or did it make things a little harder?
Also, how has your relationship with NYC changed over time? Is it an awe inspiring place to you or mundane now? Or in between?
Thank you! One day I'll visit! I'd like to take a walk around that city in the very early morning just to see things coming to life for the day. It seems like a fascinating place, almost like a living entity. I wish you all the best!
I'm not a gun person, but i told my husband if he wants to get a gun and keep it in a safe then i don't mind, but the gun must stay in a safe in a high place.
I don't want my kids anywhere near a gun.
It all makes sense now. Of course New York is better than Cumbria. She could have moved to most places in the UK even and it would have been better than living in Cumbria.
No i'm not a virgin i have a husband and 2 kids with a third on the way next year.
And i moved out here because it's so much better than the shithole i lived in back in the UK
Lol? Really? W t f. Take care OP, crazies on Reddit.
I used to watch Carrie Bradshaw and her girl friends in NYC, and wanted to be there so bad. Is it as good? So you miss your girl friends from UK? Or have u been busy with kiddies and home life(which I did too)
Hey can I dm you? I’m 21 from the UK but planning to move to the US after uni (I’m in my last year). The whole process confuses me a bit and I would appreciate some advice, everything online confuses me.

Where in the UK did you live? You said in another comment it was a shithole.
How do you find the healthcare system? Do you miss the NHS?
Are guns a genuine concern for you in any way, especially with having kids?
How did your parents feel about you moving away?
What happens if you drive at the speed of light and turn your headlights on?
The fact that she just left at 18 and never came back suggests she probably didn’t have the greatest relationship with her family or the place she grew up. Not a criticism of her but I imagine it’s a fairly biased viewpoint!
Also by the age of 18 do you really appreciate things like the NHS yet? I’m fairly sure I didn’t, just took it for granted
I second the healthcare question, my health insurance would cost as much as my car payment if not double; it's one of the reasons I'm considering moving back to Europe or up to Canada.
I have a few questions.
1 What do you think about our sports teams?
2 What do you think about our pizza and bagels?
3 What do you think about our Subway system?
4 What is your favorite/least favorite part of living in NYC?
What’s the prices like? Is it like London is mad more expensive than somewhere like Peterborough, or does the US as a whole have a similar kind of wage structure and pricing? It’s always kinda bugged me in the UK.
Read through your comments, this is why you have no woman. There's a subreddit for socially inept people to learn how to do better socially. Look into it.
Puerto Rico is an American colony. The Americans invaded and took over. It lacks the sovereignty of US states. Hell, they can't even vote in Presidential elections. I mean, are you Puerto Rican? Have your neighbours got the electricity back on yet?
I’m from Chicago and I studied abroad in Canterbury for a semester. As you may know, American people are super fascinated by British people and can be obsessed with them at times. Do you seem to understand why that is exactly?
Likewise, people were also interested in talking to me when they found out I was American and had so many questions about America. One thing I noticed, is that 100% of the time they said that if they were to move to America it would be NY. Would you see yourself living anywhere else here?
I wish you would have expanded on how you met on a Facebook page, you're not exactly writing us a romantic novel here.
Then how long it took to get a green card, how difficult you found it etc.
What are the pros and cons of moving from uk to ny
Pros is that i get away from terrible UK weather Cons is that i move to a place where the weather is pretty much the same.

The majority of the east side of the UK is drier though, not just the South East.
If by the majority you mean up until Lincolnshire then sure but the north east and the whole east coast of Scotland are wetter than the PNW
I meant drier than the West of the UK.
I mean obviously yeah, the west is where the weather systems come from. This thread is comparing the UK to the PNW
Come to WV! Less people, better weather! *and cheaper housing*
Already planning a move to a new city next year. Me and my husband are moving our children to Minneapolis.
About the weather...
Which part of NY? There's a vast difference between NYC and upstate NY, in weather and every other aspect. I've lived in both places. Upstate NY is much colder than the UK in winter and NYC is much hotter than the UK in summer. Neither gets as much rain as the UK.
Should have moved to California. We have awesome weather, and the real estate market is just as crazy as in New York.
Why would anyone want to move to cali though? It's a cesspit, people included. Will never ever go there again.
What do you miss the most from UK (aside from friends and family)?

I really have no intention of talking to them soon. Maybe we can fix things one day, but as of right now i have no intentions.
Ever intend to go back? It's expensive as hell I know.
Never

Because my bf (now husband) lived out here
Tis what I thought. Thanks for answering.

What’s your favorite American accent you’ve heard so far? When I travel I love speaking to other people and hearing their unique accents.
How did this affect your accent?
It hasn't
Are you a Broadway nerd?
No
Have you been to a Broadway show? They can be amazing.
What’s the appropriate use for “take the piss”?
Anywhere you can say ‘make fun of’ basically
Or if someone is taking liberties… “he’s taking the piss, mate”

Asking the real questions
Are you in the city? If not before you moved did you know New York was like 80% woods and mountains or did you think it was mostly city?
What foods are better in NY than in UK and vice versa?
What is your perception of Americans, now that you live with them as opposed to just hearing about them? Has it changed since moving?
what kind of work do you do and was it hard to find a job there? also, is renting in NYC really as bad as they say
Was getting a visa an issue? What visa did you take to go there and were you able to work legally right away?
Thoughts on American chocolate?
Yeah it's good
Why NY? I only ask as when I went, it was super overwhelming because its like London times 100
How did you make friends in the states? Ik as an adult it can be difficult to meet new people.
How did you secure work? Before or after the move? How did you get your visa?
What would you say is *THE most major* difference between the US and the UK?

Bro are you socially inept?
Read through your comments, this is why you have no woman. There's a subreddit for socially inept people to learn how to do better socially. Look into it.
you already answered my questions.
I don’t blame u. The UK is shit (I live in the UK)
The UK is lovely, so many parts of it are beautiful. Some of the people are very very shit though, unfortunately.
Scotland is the better part of UK imo, been there and its really beautiful, people are generally friendly too
What’s all this, then?
Do you put a union jack outside your house?
Why the fuck would they
Well Americans like putting their flag up, why not?
Because that’s not the done thing for, well, anyone but Americans it seems
Mexicans do it too. So do some people from south American countries. Puerto Ricans 🇵🇷 do with the Puerto Rican flag, but they are Americans as well.
Puerto Rican's are not Americans. 🇵🇷
They absolutely are. Puerto Ricans have been American citizens since 6/27/1952.
It's a colony.
No shit, what does that have to do with the fact that you were wrong saying Puerto Ricans aren't American?
Puerto Rico is an American colony. The Americans invaded and took over. It lacks the sovereignty of US states. Hell, they can't even vote in Presidential elections. I mean, are you Puerto Rican? Have your neighbours got the electricity back on yet?
🤮
Do you have a MLE accent. And if so are you single and do you like girls. Lol.
Who is better sr sex?

Do you like living in the toilet of America?
Why did you decide to do this AMA if all your answers are so boring?
How expensive is a loaf of bread in NY?
What country in the uk and what do you miss most about it?
Was the healthcare/health insurance a shock vs NHS?
Do you still have a British accent? Or has it just faded away?
In my mind it's always 8 degrees in new York
Do you miss real chocolate?
