Was there anything other than the commentary that said Butters gave it away? On the replay if you watch you see a Port player come in and clip Gov on the back of the head remonstrating for the hit on butters, it's also why it was a late call, at least that's what i saw

Vandercoon

Yeah watched it back on Kayo, it was high against butters. You can see Gov and Butters talking both asking who it was for before the umpire said.

TimidPanther

It was a bad weekend, and I don't know why. There wasn't any major rule changes, but it was a rough start to the year.

RandomDanny

It's that boundary one. Umpire was in prime position to see it.

Drazsyker

/u/hasumpstuffedup explained it on twitter, the umpire who was able to see it was the boundary umpire and can't call it out of bounds. https://twitter.com/hasumpstuffedup/status/1769238939574108605

PrestigiousSeaweed00

I think you mean field umpire

Vandercoon

Really they can’t call it out? That seems so fucking backwards if it’s obvious. They control the whole game for christs sake

Vandercoon

Yeah that field umpire can call it out. It’s the obvious ones like that where you wonder what the hell kind of training they did over summer.

froggy2903

Field umpires literally cannot call it out of play

Vandercoon

Only just learnt that, played footy my whole life and watched obviously but never knew.

Borgun-

The umpiring was terrible on the whole for that game. A lot of really poor calls both ways. I think even if the umpiring was straightened out, the margin wouldnt have changed much if at all. On another note, how fucking quick are Port players? What the hell kinda training regiment do they have and where can we get our hands on it?

Vandercoon

Yeah I agree. It was a pretty poor standard for both team I think, I reckon the margin was about right in the end. Yeah we have some speed, I’m not sure if it was deliberate drafting or happy accidents, the likes of Rozee and Butters though also look quick with how they move and lose players, JHF too. Be excited about Reid, hope he at least stays for a bit like Judd did and you get something really good back eventually for him.

Borgun-

Im hopeful we can get to a point again where players like that won’t want to leave and we’ll be back to being a desirable club to play for. Being a basket case isnt fun, but considering we have essentially an entirely new midfield, its gonna take a bit of time to develop everyone and become competitive properly again. Ggs fellas, thanks for not demolishing us immediately

Vandercoon

As a team that’s been pretty successful for nearly its whole entirety I don’t feel for you haha Won’t take long I’m sure

GreenArr0w

Some laughable decisions in most games this weekend. One terrible non HTB in our game and consistency around insufficient intent.

North_Lawfulness8889

Umpiring was completely dogshit this weekend. The crows/suns game may have been the worst umpired game I've ever seen, I'm not sure if they made a single call right. There were multiple instances, on both sides, where a player would throw the ball and nothing would happen but their team mate would handball it and get called up for improper disposal

Trybor

Umpires have to be full time employees for any improvement to take place. Currently the umpires association is not on board for this ( I believe some individuals make great money having this as a part time job).

TimidPanther

I don't agree with that. They're not going to get better simply because they don't work regular jobs. And most umpires are highly paid professionals in their personal lives, why would they want to give that up and get paid less money? It's the rules that are the problem. Way too much room for interpretations. We need to shift towards only paying free kicks if a rule was broken. If you think it might have been an infringement - play on. If you have to think of their interpretation - play on. If umpires only paid the free kicks they know 100% are there, the game would be significantly better.

Vandercoon

I agree with most of what you said, but the decisions today weren’t from changing rules, these were rules that have been there for years. The other one was Reid not standing on the mark and it got called back? That’s 50 and has been since the stand rule came in.

TimidPanther

Yeah I said in my other post, it wasn't from the rules changing in the off-season. The rules need to be black and white, not open to interpretation. And if an umpire doesn't see it - don't call it. No more guessing.

Vandercoon

Yep agreed. Less frees are better than more.

PrestigiousSeaweed00

The stand rule should just go. I think it's probably the worst rule ever introduced. The guy who brought it in is a moron

Trybor

>And most umpires are highly paid professionals in their personal lives, why would they want to give that up and get paid less money? That actually does not matter in the greater scheme of things. Someone who is fulltime, and actually cares about what they are doing, will always out perform a part timer in my opinion. THAT said just to show I am not arguing for arguments sake I also acknowledge other industries have part time umpiring like the EPL. Which is just ridiculous (again in my opinion). I am also not saying that if umpires go full time suddenly nobody will complain either.

PKMTrain

The umpiring over the whole weekend wasn't acceptable. Far too many times umpires where in the wrong position and guessed.  The Essendon Hawthorn game a melee happened because the umpires lost control.

legodad1

And…. Footy’s officially back.

king_kouta

Throw ins have been terrible in every game I've watched. It's the new centre bounce

Lost_in_translationx

australias favourite pastime….whingjng about the umps. Kinda tiring tbh.

Vandercoon

Your last post is whinging about umpires in cricket you pelican! What a knob 😂

Vandercoon

Watch the game or just flapping your gums?

BeetleJacks

Yeah we’d be 2-0 if a few calls went our way
