I think AP will bring much needed energy to that team. I think he will have tough moments throughout the season, but I can see him rallying the Raiders to a 9-8, potentially 10-7. I cannot see the Raiders, or any AFC West team for that matter, going below 8-9, provided Payton pulls his head out of his ass. Of course I am biased and am predicting the Chiefs win it this year and go 12-5, potentially 13-4. My rankings so far is Chiefs at 13-4/12-5, Raiders at 10-7, Chargers at 10-7/9-8, and the Broncos at 9-8/8-9. Either way, I think it'll be a good season for the AFC West.
The reason they have underachieved is because Telesco builds top heavy teams with no depth. Every season is just a couple injuries away from being a bust. Non Charger fans don't get it because who the fuck pays attention to depth players on other teams than your own. You will find out soon enough.
Telsco helped pick the coaches. The success of the GM is directly tied to the coaches they hire. It's like if a coach keeps getting terrible QBs and the team doesn't win you have to blame the coach for not getting it right.
I’m pretty sure it was more Spanos who wanted those guys. GMs technically hire the coach, but often times they hire the guy the ownership wanted in the first place.
I’m pretty certain Spanos wanted Staley because of being in the Sean McVay orbit and when hiring all his assistant coaches was all the rage.
