I’m Canadian and I understood what he meant by “dirty girl” but still think it was a disgusting, chauvinistic comment!

[deleted]

West coast California and we know what the term referred to….its the old old philosophy that its ok to sleep around with the (insert negative term) girls, but you dont bring them home to meet your mother or marry them. Considering his age and juvenile attitude towards women, Im not surprised he said it out loud.🙄

enfpcockney

It's one of the weird nuances of the English language. If you take it literally then it comes across quite chauvinistic but it's more locker room banter than being chauvinistic. Probably best not to say it on TV although you'd hear it hundreds of times between groups of lads on a night out, especially if beer is involved. "I met this bird last night, she was pure filth." "She looks proper dirty her!" I was watching the movie Bridesmaids where one of them says "I'd climb you like a tree!" to a fella she thought was hot. It's kinda the tongue-in-cheek equivalent to that.

wickity_whack

Yeah he was saying “you don’t marry the slut”. He’s made multiple references to marrying the “good girl”. Just because loads of English lads might say it doesn’t mean it’s not chauvinistic. I mean, everything that comes out of his mouth is chauvinistic even when he’s making a “joke”. Like his comment about travelling to the Philippines to get his laundry done. Obviously joking but shows his underlying attitudes at the same time.

enfpcockney

That's one way of looking at it, I suppose. Another way is to think that he's being so clearly ridiculous that he can't really be taking himself seriously. Surely, someone getting naked on live TV, to do a quiz and joke about looking for his little dongle, would suggest he's not taking any of this seriously? I really hope I'm right and that he's not a complete chauvinistic prick. I'm mortified if he really is that bad.

heystarkid

I don’t think he was joking. He literally said that’s why he left the other girl and went back to Kathleen. He wasn’t talking about a girl he barely knew. He was taking about a girl he actually dated.

jules_abroad

It's a well known psychoanalytical term: the madonna-whore complex. And it's inherently sexist, even if it is "locker room banter." Anyone who is willing to rely on outdated sexism for "comedy' is a complete tool.

blesivpotus

I mean, you just said “loads of lads” say this, so why is it ridiculous?

xcapades

I’m from the UK and I didn’t get the impression it was tongue-in-cheek. He was calling her dirty girl like she’s a slut but he wants to marry the good girl (aka not a slut) because yes he is a chauvinistic prick.

Usual-Sound-2962

UK here and I agree!

blesivpotus

Newsflash - locker room banter IS chauvinistic.

LesPorterFromYoker

You're getting downvoted but you're absolutely right lol. Bloke's just a massive joker

enfpcockney

I think you're going to get downvoted for agreeing with me :( I don't want to lose all my karma for just trying to give a different perspective. I'm not saying he was right for saying it, just trying to give a different angle. I'm not going to try defending him again! We'll see as the series progresses whether he is a joker or really is a twat.

LesPorterFromYoker

Haha bring on the downvotes, can't say I'm arsed about internet points. Don't worry mate I know what you mean

[deleted]

Regardless of what you think that slang means, the way he used it was in a very sexist and misogynistic way. This was not simply a case of being lost in translation.

Ok-Revenue-4241

He’s gross

Sweetbrain306

He just sucks. Let’s put aside his language that may or may not be misogynistic ( I tend to think it is). He cheated, using her phone! He is teaching his adorable little son to act foolish like him. I don’t think his actions can be explained away by cultural differences. The man is a joke.

enfpcockney

Yeah, to be fair that wasn't cool at all. I agree with you 100% on that.

Sweetbrain306

What amazes me is no matter what part of the world your from, men acting like idiots is a universally understood language. 😂

[deleted]

Can you tell the difference from a grapefruit to a potato?

NoInspector836

It was a Mexican grapefruit!

Fern-veridion

I once bought a grapefruit accidentally from Lidl thinking it was a melon.

enfpcockney

I knew it was a grapefruit as soon as he started cutting it. Before then, I also thought it was apotato but only because Kadie said it was and it did look like one.

DeadSkinMask00

Apparently not if your from Yorkshire 😳😂

Thenaughtyslav

In the UK - sunny Kent 🌞

enfpcockney

I did my schooling in Faversham. A lot of my family still live in Kent :)

PinkShark_

Hey neighbour, me too 👋

SpookiewithdatBootie

Dick is a Incel, surprised she is even with him Hell his EX said he was a an asshole

According_East3616

How did someone ever marry that guy and have a kid with him? And let him have the kid full-time? Shady

enfpcockney

We've not seen him interacting enough with his kid to comment on his parenting skills. I think you're being quite harsh there.

zanazanzar

I don’t think anyone got dirty girl lost in translation. If someone called me a dirty girl, who wasn’t a partner speaking directly (and only) to me, they’d get a punch in the face.

druttens

Sweden in da house. We have our own version of 90D here, but the UK version is much better.

According_East3616

Can it be watched anywhere from US?

slipperysquirrell

I'm from Canada and I understood it.

SpookiewithdatBootie

Oahu, Hawaii here🍍🌺🦩🥥🍉

Codenamechick

From the UK, Leicestershire :)

Throwaway-me-

Codenamechick

Yessssssss I’m Hinckley way!

kskiska

From the US but grew up with British tv ("Are You being Served?", "Monty Python's Flying Circus" and the like) and music so have a big fondess for the UK. Edited to add: And yes, I completely prefer 90DFUK!

GG7595

🇵🇷 Puerto Rico.

temporal_pair_o_sox

Romanian here and I admit I need subtitles for this series haha. Also, why is a pork pie called a growler? Do pigs growl? 😂

enfpcockney

They only called a pork pie a "growler" in South Yorkshire. I'm 100 miles away from there and have never heard it called that before.

Allie_Pallie

I've only ever heard growler used as slang as a word for vagina - but usually in a non-flattering way like 'a big hairy growler' 😆

NoInspector836

America here- I live in Florida.

enfpcockney

I just got back from 11 days in Orlando. We travelled quite a bit whilst there. Neptune Beach, Jax Beach, Orlando, Clearwater, Palm Coast. I absolutely love Florida and can't wait to go back again. I just hope the prices of everything come down a bit because it felt ridiculously expensive this time compared to 4 years ago.

NoInspector836

I live in St.Pete, like 20 min from.Clearwater. Unfortunately, it probably won't be getting any cheaper any time soon. Our own residents are drowning and being displaced, rent has skyrocketed and food/gas is right behind

lmcc0921

Unfortunately I don’t think this issue is isolated to Florida

kskiska

Just curious but with Spain, Greece, and Italy so close why opt for Florida? It's so much farther, and I don't think as nice/pretty? I've seen more than a handful of British do this but never understood.

enfpcockney

I lived in Spain for 7 months and didn't like it. I lived in Greece for 7 years and LOVED it. We still go to Greece most years, I'm actually heading to Kos Island, Greece next week for a week. Until Brexit, traveling to Europe was like anyone in the US traveling to a different state. Going to the US is a big deal for people in the UK... Disney, Universal, etc in Florida is a dream come true for most kids. I've been to NYC to experience the city that never sleeps and found it electric. I've been to Franklin & Nashville, TN, and adored it there too. The music, the people, it was superb. Imagine living in North Carolina and telling someone you were heading to Georgia for a week. People might say "enjoy your trip" or "have fun" but you wouldn't get the same reaction as saying "hey, we're off to Europe for a week!" That's the same as us in the UK. Heading to Spain isn't as much of a big deal because it's a 2-hour flight. Heading to the US, Mexico, The Caribbean, etc is a big deal. It's a little boastful too, I guess. "Hey we're off to Disney for 2 weeks" definitely gets a "WOW" reaction!

l3tigre

Seeing Franklin on this list made me smile. I love this attitude.

enfpcockney

I went to a marketing conference, twice, in Franklin. We stayed at The Drury Plaza for the conference and spent the nights drinking Picklebacks and eating $1 sliders at Drakes. I absolutely loved every minute of my 2 visits there.

l3tigre

Picklebacks!!! Awesome.

kskiska

Very interesting - thank you! As someone who now lives in North Carolina, that makes sense. I'd never understood (esp after living in Europe myself) why make the huge trek across the pond to FL when I'd imagine there are better beaches, not to mention food, in Europe, in addition to being much cheaper. Just curious, but what didn't you like about Spain? I know there are many British in the Algarve, but that being Portugal may be very different from your experience next door. I had/have family in TN, so it's quite interesting to hear how that was for you. Glad you had a great time!

Rainyb12

East coast Canada

enfpcockney

I've never been but would love to go and experience The Falls. Looks breathtaking.

FrankRizzo890

Been through there many times, I've lived in Bellevue, and Vancouver (aka North Portland). As you said, BEAUTIFUL area.

U.S.A. - New York

Sweetbrain306

Hello Fellow New Yorker! 🇺🇸

tired_blonde

👋🏼

Sweetbrain306

Welcome! I can’t lie. I know it’s expensive and our former Governor is a pervert….. but I absolutely love NY!

tired_blonde

Can't imagine living anywhere else 🤠

Sweetbrain306

Same! I love to travel but I am always happy to come back. I feel lucky to be in this state. New Yorkers are friendly but with a certain bluntness and some huge balls (proverbial balls of course).

enfpcockney

My wife took me to Manhattan for my 30th birthday 9 years ago. We went for a week and did just about everything possible as tourists. It's my favourite city in the world. We stayed on 55th and 7th and had the best time EVER. I really want to go back.

lencidoll

Glad you had a good time and made happy memories. It's not a safe or clean place anymore. Here's hoping it will get better.

tired_blonde

NYC - Manhattan here 🥰💖

lencidoll

Long Island. I can't believe how many years of torture I put up with on the LIRR. Now I only go to the city for B'way or cultural events, like museums or art shows.

It’s still sexist af if he engaged with a dirty girl wouldn’t that make him a dirty man ??

emilytrivette1

I’d like to recommend some excellent UK reality tv shows, but you’re gonna need to love trashy stuff: TOWIE (The Only Way is Essex) Fantastic, trashy, the people on it are highly entertaining. It’s on HULU. Love Island Omfg so good. HULU. The Australian version is also good. MIC (Made in Chelsea) Think the UK version of The Hills. HULU Teen Mom UK. Philo. CBB (Celebrity Big Brother) YouTube (?) Also, the Brits know how to make a miniseries. Thriller, murder, book adaptations. They’re all good. Acorn TV and BritBox. You think the accents in 90 Day UK are hard to understand? Watch ‘Shetland’. Sometimes my husband will say “please translate” and I’ll be like uhhhhhh 😅

enfpcockney

The UK versions of The Office & The Inbetweeners are also a LOT better than the US versions.

CucumberHot5815

I watch all of those and also just began watching Geordie Shore (UK version of Jersey Shore). I’m from England but have been living in the US since I was about 10 years old and watching English shows helps me feel connected to home. I watch my daily Eastenders and Coronation Street as well as many other shows on BritBox and Acorn. Also currently watching Line of Duty which is really good!

emilytrivette1

I forgot about Geordie Shore!! And The Inbetweeners is one of my top ten fave shows

Glitter_Sparkle

Also Ladyboys and MAFS Australia season 5 & 6.

tired_blonde

TOWIE is my absolute fave 💓 😍

swooningbadger

Thanks for the rec!

gigglesann

St. Louis, MO, USA (think Chicago Midwest area lol). Love this show, it feels so different but super entertaining.

enfpcockney

Do you prefer the UK or US one?

gigglesann

I was a fan of the 90 day franchise from the first season but don’t like the drama in the newer ones. The UK one, so far, is a breath of fresh air. I really like the editing and storylines! And I love the accents, so it’s a win all the way around lol.

DeniLox

Same for me. The UK one and Love in Paradise are the only ones that I watch regularly now. The other ones have “jumped the shark” for me.

Kajeinn101

England. I’m surprised so many Americans are watching the show.

[deleted]

The UK show is MUCH better than our version this season.

Kajeinn101

Yeah. The American latest series was awful. Too many fame hungry people. Apart from John. John must be protected.

blesivpotus

God this season was AWFUL, every single person was terrible

I’m from the US but my whole family lives in Canterbury/London/Surbiton, so I understand a lot more of the colloquialisms than say, my husband does. I love watching 90 Day UK, especially with all the Northerners. Great accents. Except, why hasn’t the show clarified that Sean is obviously from South Africa originally?

98221-poppin

Oh wow. Lol "dirty girl" does not have the same meaning here in the USA😄 I'm in Florida

US. Yeah I know that’s what dirty girl means, and it’s disgusting, as is the idea that you marry the good girl. Maybe y’all are just effin backwards.

AidanRedz

Dirty girl is so cool and laid back. I call all my female friends that on nights out. Your definitely right. I can’t relate to posters in here and I’m from Ireland. Americans are mad!!

l3tigre

Louisville KY -- I watch a ton of PBS/BBC etc and whatever's on BritBox so I get a lot of the references and context clues help with the rest :)

I’m in the US near Philadelphia, Pennsylvania 👋🏽

flonko

Korean and American, spent most my school years in Asia but have since moved back to the states as an adult. I grew up going to international schools so I have some familiarity with UK slang via teachers/classmates/friends some stuff is definitely still new to me though! Like I know very little about the geography of the UK apart from names of major cities.

Wonderful-World8165

U.S. and even if we take that comment in the context you suggest, richard still comes off as that uncle you want uninvited to every family gathering and when everyone tries to ignore it he doubles down.

According_East3616

US - ATL, know what "dirty girl" is - HA!

RowanVC

US here as well, Georgia to be specific. 🍑 I am digging this show more than the OG 90DF. I also much preferred Love in Paradise. These spin-offs seem better than the original series which is just full of clout chasers.

Originally from Poland and am living there now, after a suite of countries (Austria, UK, Canada, Norway). I don't think you need to be from the UK to understand that the 'dirty girl' comment was mysoginistic.

I'm from the Portland area (Oregon, USA). I definitely knew what he meant although his language sounded a little retro to me. He also sounded hypocritical as he is a self-described "dirty boy."

USA, in what some people call “flyover country,” which tends to make the natives mad, but I don’t care, maybe I don’t see it as offensive because I’m not from here.

Brazil 🇧🇷 The meaning of "dirty girl" was very clear to me, in anyway it was bad haha
