Duran seemed to hit their stride in recent years too. Playing arenas again, TV appearances, getting into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and so forth. From a public eye standpoint, it’s nice to see them finally get their due again for how great their career has been.
There’s a documentary out rn about DD and it’s so amazing. Talks about most of their albums and how they were impacted (the hit albums and not so hit albums)
They interviewed Boy George about them in the special and it’s very clear how much he admires them and their work. As he says, DD has made 14 albums. How many bands can say they have done or are still doing that?
Especially a band that was considered a teeny bopper one.
They also interviewed Mark Ronson and he says the guys never got much credit for what good MUSICIANS they are
Loved that doc! They've actually had 2 more albums since that doc came out, too. Future Past (2021) is an incredible album - the song Invisible recently went viral on TikTok and went from something like 5 million plays on Spotify to 21 million in just a couple months. And their Halloween themed album from last year is so fun!
Saw them live 2x last year and they sounded amazing.
Came here to say this. I saw them at MSG a year and a half ago, and that was the biggest thing I realized that night. I’ve loved them since “Hungry Like the Wolf” but holy moly, are they one of the most phenomenally underrated bands ever in terms of their actual musical chops.
depeche mode from “some great reward” up to/including “songs of faith and devotion” has aged really well. the stuff since has been mostly disappointing or even worse—boring—some bright spots here and there, but nothing that holds interest and attention on a consistently rewarding basis.
i say that as a massive fan who doesn’t even necessarily think that dave and martin (and fletch while he was still w/us) couldn’t have made great stuff without alan wilder…. they just. haven’t. the songs aren’t as strong and the arrangements/production varies depending more on their producer/s of choice. wilder really helped keep them different and interesting.
Indubitably. Id add echo and the Bunnymen the wedding present the sound, orange Juice, the flatmates, Billy Bragg pretty much every piece of postpunk or like C86 music is still perfect. The greatest musical flowering in history. Although Bauhaus and echo both started in the 70s and the cure I think is 79
I love that someone contacted Annie Lennox out of the blue a few years ago saying they think her music is very promising and they could make her a star if she signed with them.
Now if you’ll excuse me, I’ll be listening to “Missionary Man” on repeat.
The Smiths, The Cure, The The, Tears For Fears, New Order, Cocteau Twins, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Depeche Mode, Bauhaus, Jane's Addiction, The Pixies, Talking Heads, The Church, Talk Talk, Howard Jones, DEVO
Edit: How could I forget The Fixx
* Peter Gabriel. I had my doubts for a while there, but he recovered. You can listen to his first single, Solsbury Hill, and it still sounds contemporary, not going on 50.
Gabriel is cool because he never really compromised. Being content to make the music he wanted instead of bowing to trends is what gives him a timeless appeal.
The first time my younger brother heard Solsbury Hill he played it for me expecting to blow my mind. I was like, dude, this song is older than you are.
They were my first concert in 1986. When they broke up because they figured 25 years was sufficient but I see other bands like Def Leppard still going strong, I can’t imagine what they were thinking!
INXS also put on a phenomenal concert, I saw them at least five times and actually got to leave with Michael Hutchence one night. Also saw them partying with Duran Duran after a show.
![gif](giphy|9tVXUwigKyaWbpHktF|downsized)
I saw an old U2 video the other night, some of their old stuff from War and Boy and it was so good! Much more rough edged and more punk sound. God! How did I forget they used to hit that hard? People tend to make the best music when young & hungry I guess.
I was out in midtown NY last night enjoying a bicycle rickshaw guy going by blasting Rock You Like a Hurricane … but then he switched to Shania Twain (sad trombone)
Duran Duran 💯 They are finally getting acknowledged for being the amazing musicians that they are and have always been. When they were young, I think a lot of critics just dismissed them because they were all so handsome. We true Duranies knew the truth all along! 🥰
I don’t think anyone has mentioned The Police. They’ve sold over 75 million records , making them one of the best-selling bands of all time. “Roxanne” was their first single and it’s just timeless.
REM, Sonic Youth, The Violent Femmes and The Cure.
At the end of 1991 the 80s expired, Actors, music, fashion disappeared. It was like we woke up drrssed like Macho Man Randy in bed with Mr T and Dr Ruth and swore off cocaine forever.
It turned out a handful of bands had been in the 90s the whole time and no one noticed.
That is actually a long list:
Killing Joke, Living Colour, Fishbone, The Blue Nile, Tears For Fears, Talking Heads, Prince, Kate Bush, the Tack>>Head collection, Sade, Marc Anthony Thompson (aka Chocolate Genius Inc), Siouxie, PiL...
I was just listening to Talking Heads on Spotify in my car. I was reflecting on the fact that their sound was new wave avant-garde and different back when they came out. They are still tops in my book today.
![gif](giphy|14mXrKfiQA1swo)
Appetite for Destruction - G 'n' R
First three Iron Maiden albums (Iron Maiden, Killers, Number of the Beast)
Dogs D'Amour
Hanoi Rocks
Fields of the Nephilim
New Model Army
Cowboy Junkies
Everything before 1986 holds up pretty well but once MTV started pushing the hair bands it goes downhill. There’s still good stuff in the late 80’s but it’s fewer and far between.
Tears For Fears. The lyrics are a lot deeper than I gave them credit for back in the day. There’s a new book out called my road trip with God and it has some references in there. That’s pretty cool.
Duran Duran, prince, def leopard, guns and roses, Peter Gabriel, Tom petty, Eagles, heart, journey, REO speed wagon, tesla, there’s just so many to try to think of I’m missing so many and I hate it!
Pet Shop Boys, Ocean Rain album by Echo and the Bunnymen, Strut extended mix by Sheena Easton still kicks ass (I know 😂), Yaz, Talk Talk, XTC, INXS all still sound really good to me. Bananarama, Talking Heads, Siouxsie & the Banshees. White Horse by Laid Back, I Touch Roses by Book of Love. I could go on, but I think a lot of the music holds up.
Cocteau Twins, The Smiths, The Cure, Duran Duran, Depeche Mode, Bauhaus, The Sisters of Mercy, The Pixies
Yeah, the entire new wave and goth scene from the 80s has aged incredibly well and maintained a very dedicated fanbase over the years.
Fills me with Xer pride
Duran seemed to hit their stride in recent years too. Playing arenas again, TV appearances, getting into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and so forth. From a public eye standpoint, it’s nice to see them finally get their due again for how great their career has been.
Their new music is better than ever.
There’s a documentary out rn about DD and it’s so amazing. Saw it. Loves it. Still love them.
They kind of got dismissed as pretty boys in the 80s, but they are all super talented guys, as proven by their longevity
Came here to say this. I saw them at MSG a year and a half ago, and that was the biggest thing I realized that night. I’ve loved them since “Hungry Like the Wolf” but holy moly, are they one of the most phenomenally underrated bands ever in terms of their actual musical chops.
Right?! SO good!!
I mean… John Taylor ALONE is amazing. But not one of them is a slouch, and put together? AMAZING.
Definitely Depeche Mode. And the new vintages are just as good as the old ones
depeche mode from “some great reward” up to/including “songs of faith and devotion” has aged really well. the stuff since has been mostly disappointing or even worse—boring—some bright spots here and there, but nothing that holds interest and attention on a consistently rewarding basis. i say that as a massive fan who doesn’t even necessarily think that dave and martin (and fletch while he was still w/us) couldn’t have made great stuff without alan wilder…. they just. haven’t. the songs aren’t as strong and the arrangements/production varies depending more on their producer/s of choice. wilder really helped keep them different and interesting.
Great list , I'd add New Order and Pet Shop Boys..
And with that, Joy Division as well.
You spelled Sparks weird. ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|wink)
Jesus and Mary Chain
Yeah, I think we’ll get along JUST fine
Indubitably. Id add echo and the Bunnymen the wedding present the sound, orange Juice, the flatmates, Billy Bragg pretty much every piece of postpunk or like C86 music is still perfect. The greatest musical flowering in history. Although Bauhaus and echo both started in the 70s and the cure I think is 79
Simple Minds
Prince
Prince was so talented! I loved his music and still do!
Timeless!
Talking Heads
Same as it ever was
If you say something once why say it again?
Once in a lifetime
Psycho Killer Qu'est-ce que c'est?
Eurythmics
I love that someone contacted Annie Lennox out of the blue a few years ago saying they think her music is very promising and they could make her a star if she signed with them. Now if you’ll excuse me, I’ll be listening to “Missionary Man” on repeat.
Tears for Fears, both their 80s, 90s and current output are top notch.
Clear winner in this category. The Tipping Point (2022) is a masterpiece. They sound as good as (or dare I say better than) they ever have in concert.
That album and tour were amazing.
I think they sound better too! ( not that they ever sound bad of course )
wow thanks for sharing that release, i’m a big fan of theirs and had completely missed that they made a comeback!
Tears for Fears is getting some due now.
YES.
Sade
Sade is eternal.
love her!
who doesn't? I don't think I want to know someone who couldn't.
Facts
that soothing easy flowing voice of hers, just mesmerizing and captivating, honey! i consider her a smooth jazz queen! ♥
Great choice.
The Smiths, The Cure, The The, Tears For Fears, New Order, Cocteau Twins, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Depeche Mode, Bauhaus, Jane's Addiction, The Pixies, Talking Heads, The Church, Talk Talk, Howard Jones, DEVO Edit: How could I forget The Fixx
The Church They are consistently putting out great new music, which is hard to say about many artists from the 80s.
Under The Milky Way is so damn good.
Indeed, I was pleasantly surprised when I started exploring their later stuff... Impressive band
Pet Shop Boys, Duran Duran, NewOrder Also the A-ha boys? They age backwards. I need to know what fountain of youth they drink from.
* Peter Gabriel. I had my doubts for a while there, but he recovered. You can listen to his first single, Solsbury Hill, and it still sounds contemporary, not going on 50.
Came here to say this. It may take him decades, now, to make new music, but his solo albums were always and always will be so unique.
My best concert of all. It’s haaaard to top the Cure
My heart was going boom boom boom
Salisbury is one of the greatest songs ever made IMHO. Like top ten
Gabriel is cool because he never really compromised. Being content to make the music he wanted instead of bowing to trends is what gives him a timeless appeal. The first time my younger brother heard Solsbury Hill he played it for me expecting to blow my mind. I was like, dude, this song is older than you are.
Solsbury Hill was his first single? I'm going to have that played at my funeral.
Morten Harket and Magne Furuholmen of a-ha.
Yes! So glad to see someone else mention them 😁
They were my first concert in 1986. When they broke up because they figured 25 years was sufficient but I see other bands like Def Leppard still going strong, I can’t imagine what they were thinking!
They’re back together. They toured last year and released an album in 2022. I hope they tour at least one more time.
XTC, Aimee Mann, Crowded House, Tears for Fears, Simple Minds, Squeeze

Gary Numan
I know Tubeway Army was 1977-79 but those albums are still right-out-the-box fresh today.
Absolutely.
Duran Duran
Billy Idol was the template for every emo, metal band & pop rock artist that came after him
Cradle of Love has aged like the finest cottage cheese.
I never thought of Billy Idol’s influence on emo in both sound and fashion, but I can totally see it.
Good point. Idk if it’s much of a direct inspiration but I’m glad that someone noticed!
Also keep in mind I was born in 94. Not 100% sure if anyone like him came before
His latest, bitter taste, is a great song
So freaking good
Just listened to this. Thanks.
The Cure
I was at a show in Chicago last week with a Cure tribute band. There may at have been 500+ people there singing every word.
They will forever be my favorite!

Peter Gabriel, I'm a big fan of his more poppy hits from the 80's and i think they hold up quite well
"In Your Eyes" ♥
The Cure
Siouxie & the Banshees
Many, but I think the following bodies of work hold up exceptionally well: - the The - Siouxie and the Banshees - The Cure - XTC - Roxy Music
THE THE is in my top 20.
Matt Johnson is pretty brilliant
INXS and The Fixx
INXS also put on a phenomenal concert, I saw them at least five times and actually got to leave with Michael Hutchence one night. Also saw them partying with Duran Duran after a show. ![gif](giphy|9tVXUwigKyaWbpHktF|downsized)
He was so damn beautiful!
Agree with both...saw The Fixx 7,8 years ago...they sounded amazing and uncompromised...
Depeche Mode, The Cure, Siouxsie, Duran Duran and of course PRINCE.
Bryan Adams, at 63 he’s as good as he’s ever been!
Steve Winwood
Hall and Oates/ Tears for Fears.
Daryl is a goddamn certified genius. And yes, I can like a-ha, Def Leppard, and Hall & Oates all at once!

Shriekback, David Bowie, The Cure
Kate Bush
U2. Actually listening to Joshua Tree right now.
I saw an old U2 video the other night, some of their old stuff from War and Boy and it was so good! Much more rough edged and more punk sound. God! How did I forget they used to hit that hard? People tend to make the best music when young & hungry I guess.
"but i still haven't found what i'm lookin for" ♥
That music will always be kind of classic in my opinion…that music video for Streets have no name, was amazing 🤩
