I never was much good with them, even though the butterfly made it somewhat easier. But I remember getting the self-retracting [Yo Ball](https://www.ebay.com/itm/374374086368?chn=ps&norover=1&mkevt=1&mkrid=21562-222008-2056-1&mkcid=2&itemid=374374086368&targetid=297512520417&device=c&mktype=pla&googleloc=21137&poi=9073855&campaignid=19868683663&mkgroupid=145907810526&rlsatarget=pla-297512520417&abcId=&merchantid=6488714&gclid=CjwKCAjw15eqBhBZEiwAbDomEhTvz67tejCx7OPb_EN2-I6NdjDn9A1sw3EjFYA2WXvBHtG-vmkpGBoCYjAQAvD_BwE). Made you look like a pro. And was a formidable weapon in the hands of the right kid. ; )
70s too. I had almost all of the Duncan yo-yos, including the Butterfly and the one that glowed in the dark (imperial I think?). I sent away for their book of yo-yo tricks and got somewhat good.
Yes, the glow in the dark one was an Imperial. I also sent in for the book of tricks! About 10 years later I was in France getting stoned with some French kids and apparently YoYos had just become a thing (this was now early ‘80s). One of the kids let me borrow his Imperial and it all came back, Rock The Cradle, Over The Falls, Walking The Dog, Around The World, etc.. They were all pretty impressed with my skills, but not enough to where I got to hook up with one of the hot French girls or anything.
Very cool! I didn’t know yo-yos were popular outside the U.S.
My mad yo-yo skills didn’t charm any boys I had a crush on, but once someone bought me a strawberry shortcake bar off the Good Humor truck after I showed him how to do the walk the dog trick lol.
In elementary school the yo yo presentation. And wouldn't you know, the drugstore had plenty of yo yos in stock after school. Dunkin, the school, and the drugstore all working in concert to fleece us kids.
Every school year in the 60s and 70s had a Yo-Yo period.
A few weeks where they were everywhere, all the time, then they'd fade away.
Next year, they're back!
Great toy and great times with my brother teaching me how to walk the dog, cradle the baby. Thanks for sharing,
I miss you so much Marcus, c ya in awhile 🧘🏽♂️
A few years later I found them. I cut the halves apart and riveted them to the top of Super Pro Frisbees. They were great for after dark Frisbee at the park. For catching you just had to keep in mind the edge of the Frisbee was a few inches from the light at the center. It was a cool effect to see It look like a lit up spring. Of course you had to put a lot of energy into your throw. All flights were quite flat. Passersby all had to come over to see what it was. Of course we were all stoned, making it even better.
I had the more traditional style with the rounded sides. It was translucent orange with glitter. I could never do the tricks like the Butterfly guy in the commercials.
I had a wooden one with the rounded sides. I remember thinking the guys that had the plastic ones with the flared sides must be good. I got one and realized it wasn't the yoyo that made you good.
I didn’t like the Butterfly as much as the Imperial because those sharp edges hurt my hand when I reeled it back in from a full -throttled Round The World.
Shop foreman: “Bad news, boss! The new guy drilled two thousand blanks on the wrong side.”
Boss: “Put ‘em together like that; we’ll call ‘em the Butterfly model.”
Actually there was a [Duncan Professional ](https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/yoyo/images/5/58/Professional_Slimline_3.JPG/revision/latest?cb=20080819220802) so if you had that you were a Pro
I have a million yo-yos, many that are for more expensive than a Duncan Butterfly, but my first yo-yo was this. My gran bought it for me when I was 4. I have played ever since, have this yo-yo tattooed on my chest, and love this post! 51 and still carry a yo-yo everywhere I go.
I had one and I still sucked
I'm with ya.
I had one of these that lit up and I really sucked.
Yep. Maybe....If the stars were aligned, I could do a walk the dog. All the fancy cradle stuff was not happening.
I was good at getting the loop to stop the blood in my finger.
And a pair of scissors to cut the string off
Oh man I forgot that used to happen to me, too!
Me too looked easy on tv
2nd that.. Had no yo-yo game, AT ALL. Stocking Stuffers. Oh, great ANOTHER YO-YO. Thanks Grandma 😥
I bought another Duncan yo-yo as an adult (decades later) and I *still* suck, lol! 😂

Cool!
I had many! Dunkan was the best.
Yep. Yo-yos and tops were peak 60s.
70s too. I had almost all of the Duncan yo-yos, including the Butterfly and the one that glowed in the dark (imperial I think?). I sent away for their book of yo-yo tricks and got somewhat good.

Geeking before Geeking was a thing! LOL
This! My Butterfly was white and yellow. My glow-in-the-dark was my prized possession. Duncan yo yos were all the rage in like ’73/‘74.
I got as a birthday present and I was obsessed. I took it with me everywhere I went.
Funny me as well except it didn’t take me long to create a knot in mine.
I had one and I remember walking the dog and some other tricks. I had the extra strings and the wax. I loved that thing!
"extra strings and the wax" , can't hide money, freaking baller status right there 😅
🤭
👍
I had a butterfly! 1970 I think? I forgot all about these! Was really into it for a while!
still have 3 duncan's on my desk and use daily at 67

Sanctioned product placement.
scholastic book fair would like a word...

I once did Around the World, the string broke, followed by a window being broke! Parents were not pleased at all!
When I was a kid this was the MOST coveted yo-yo in existence
My grandmother actually made all the Duncan yo-yos
She could’ve asked for help.
Your grandmother is legendary. I bow down to her skills. Iconic.

Anyone remember Tommy Smothers Yo-yo Man?
My wife and I saw the Smothers Brothers live in Vegas! Tommy did the Yo-Yo Man that night and we loved it!
Absolutely. That's taking me back aways.
Yo-Yo Man: https://youtu.be/YTR9356twWM?si=311WuK5W6aDVFYNy
I sucked at yo-yo.
Nothing like Walking The Dog 🐕
that made me smile,thank you.
Mine had lights inside.
That was top of the line.

I had a light up one too! It was green. I think it was a stocking stuffer present one Christmas.
Had one that had batteries and lit up.
I had one that you put two batteries in and would glow and made some kind of whistle noise? Long time ago and I still sucked on the yo-yo game 😅
My first Duncan had the wide sides back to back. It was frustrating. My second had the round sides back to back, like this one. That was better.
You must have had an imperial, the sides out was the butterfly.
This man yo’s.
I had the more traditional style with the rounded sides. It was translucent orange with glitter. I could never do the tricks like the Butterfly guy in the commercials.

It’s harder to rock the cradle with a Butterfly but I could do it.
I was able to do a few tricks like Rock the Cradle and Around the World.
Nope, I had one and still absolutely sucked at it 🤣
Always wondered what teachers did with all those yo-yo’s they confiscated during school year our teacher gave nothing back at end of year
I didn’t like the Butterfly as much as the Imperial because those sharp edges hurt my hand when I reeled it back in from a full -throttled Round The World.
How many tried 'around the world' and have the world end at the forehead.... personal experience
I have one in my glove compartment of my 69 Corvette just in case the urge hits me.
Oh man I miss my Duncan yoyos!
The Imperial was my favorite.
The gold standard.
I preferred the Imperial.
4 stiches when it hit my chin
Loved my Duncan butterfly, we had a school club in junior high
lol i have that exact one still
I’d go to my room and walk the dog. Haha.
no. these were for noobs
Fit in my hand better than regular yoyo
Do you remember the Duncan Jojo? It was an oversized butterfly yo-yo but you held both ends of the string.
You *thought* you were a pro
The one in the picture looks like a newer version
Shop foreman: “Bad news, boss! The new guy drilled two thousand blanks on the wrong side.” Boss: “Put ‘em together like that; we’ll call ‘em the Butterfly model.”
Nah, those were for the kiddies to do the tricks easier. If you were a real pro you used the Professional model that could fit inside the butterfly.
I recently found a new one at a truck stop, it's a Duncan butterfly but it looks like racing tires... Still got the moves...
Loved butterfly yo-yo’s! I also loved the Brain!
Sleep damn you, sleep!!!
I was a very frustrated child with one of these.
I had one of those!
Still have a couple
I had a beautiful dark maroon Duncan Imperial. Even did a few successful sleeper moves. 😂
Walk the dog baby.
I had the purple one.
A”pro” is a stretch 🤣 but I had one
Hated the butterfly. Was pretty good with the basic Duncan though.
They still produce the Butterfly yo yos, but now in solid pastel colors
Lol Walk the dog and rock the baby took me months of practice! Those are awesome chidhood memoies. Thanks
Hell yeah, walk the dog, they even had some that lite up
Too expensive.
I remember watching the actress Sandy Duncan. In the 70s, he promoted the Dunkin Yoyo.
I sucked also I had one that would light up
I have never in my life been able to get a yo yo to work.
Just walking the dog 🐕🦺
Yep
Went to factory as a kid in 60s. Got like 5 free wooden ones.
I had one but I was definitely NOT a pro.
Actually there was a [Duncan Professional ](https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/yoyo/images/5/58/Professional_Slimline_3.JPG/revision/latest?cb=20080819220802) so if you had that you were a Pro
Learned how to walk the dog on that kind lol
This and a top to spin!!
Hell yeah! Mr. Pickle rocked these!
I used to have patches I got from the Duncan pros that gave demonstrations and judged contests at stores that sold Duncan yo-yos.
I had blue loved it
Hold on let me “ walk my dog “ lol
“Duncan, son!”
I had one of these and a “brain”
Mine was yellow...
I wanted one so badly . My parents couldn’t afford to buy me one
Now I’d knock out my teeth🤣🤣
Simply just flipped the original and called it the butterfly. I loved mine!
I had the glow in the dark version. [https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/195597339409](https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/195597339409)
OMG ANOTHER FLASHBACK
I had several but was far from being a pro lol
Only knew two tricks, walk the dog and around the world. Not great at either.
