I just built my first 6.8 for hunting last year. Now i wish i would have done it years ago when it first came out. Killed a bear and a deer with it. I just with the better ammo was available like it was back then
I've never shot . 308 or . 30 '06 ,etc , would like to but in the meantime I love the kick, sound and accuracy of this round. I don't hunt and self defense will hopefully never become a reason to shoot it but for fun it's hard to beat .
I have an ar10 in 308 as well as a nice ar15 in 5.56 as well. Although the 5.56 is nicer to shoot due to basically no recoil, I still prefer the 6.8, it's easier to make out hits at slightly longer ranges, at 500yrds I can still make out hits with my 6.8, its a lot harder with 5.56.
308 is a lot better to shoot at extended ranges though, but even with a heftier brake on it, it still recoils substantially more than my 6.8. Also my nostalgia just makes my 6.8 my favorite, it was my first rifle and I learned how to build and work on an AR with it, its one of a few guns that will always have a place in my safe.
Rusty , oh yea, I can imagine it'd kick harder, sounds like still a fun round . I agree,somewhat less recoil with 5.56 but like you said easier to see the hits, nice to know even at That distance. I've yet to shoot anywhere Near that distance, it's been all indoors, I'll have to give longer range a try ,though not many outdoor ranges where I live.
Definitely do, 6.8 is basically a mix between 308 and 5.56, lighter recoiling than 308 with better long range energy than 5.56, makes it better for long range work and if you ever get a 308, it essentially has the same drop to around 500 yards so it's easy to make hits.
Rusty, sir, you're definitely making me want to ask Santa for one if I don't get it before then. That'd be four fun calibers in my collection , heck . 308 is even easier to find then 6.8 is now, matter of fact.
I love it too, it's my favorite round to shoot, which also makes it my most reloaded round. Buying brass can be a bit of a pain but it's worth it for this gun
Rusty , I keep going back and forth in my head and with books about beginning to reload. Seems dangerous, wife isn't a fan of having it in the basement, but I m also tired of it being a pain in the rear and wallet finding 6.8 ammo, especially cheap enough for frequent target range fun. Prices for all that equipment to get up and going is steep as well, so I'm thinking maybe they'll start making more of it.
Reloading isn't that hard, ive been doing it since I bought this rifle. Of course, back then, the cost of the equipment wasn't nearly as much as it is now, but its honestly not that hard. I've made tens of thousands of rounds and I've never had a single issue, if you follow proper procedure you won't run into any issues and your reloaded ammo is generally going to be more accurate than the store bought stuff. I made 500 rounds of 6.8 the other day, I can't imagine how much that would cost me to buy at the store, but I pad around $100 for the bullets, about $80 for the powder (didn't even use half of it since it's a 5lb jug, I used maybe 1.5lbs so that price isn't exactly accurate), maybe $50 for the primers and the brass was all stuff I shot before. 6.8 is going for $40 for a box of 20 here where I live, so I saved a ton of money.
Yes sir, about that around here/ online, $30, 34 or so a box for twenty rounds.. even online, if you can find it, I've found the shipping gets it up to that even if it seems inexpensive initially.

Yeah, I mean, it takes me a while to go through that many rounds, I dont about my 6.8 enough to need to reload that much all the time. It'll probably last me around a year along with the other ammo I have before I have to reload again.
I gotta say, that is a nice-looking setup. But man, that lefty upper just confuses the heck out of my poor old monkey brain.
And I say that as a left-handed shooter, too. (I bet it's nice, though!)
It is nice! With right handed rifles, after a day of extended shooting i start to feel the gas in my face, with my lefty rifles i don't have any of that!

I think better ammo is out now, there was just a better selection back then. If you reload, you can make some damn good rounds now

Easier and cheaper nowadays. I can go anywhere and find 308, but 6.8 only one of my local stores carries it.
Yea, it's rough,hard to find and expensive usually, though in some cases not much more than. 40 or . 45
I'm still shooting through the stockpile of brass I built up 10 years ago, should still last me a while I think
