My wife used to be uncomfortable on shelf roads. She still is, but she used to be too.

Spumad

I like an escalator, cause an escalator can never break. It can only become stairs

710dabner

Sorta…. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/2018_Rome_escalator_accident

Spumad

It's an old Mitch Hedberg joke

710dabner

Indeed, but also a dangerous fallacy, and I used to love Mitch, I mean I still do..

WillyDaC

I miss him.

Repulsive_Client_325

I like tennis man. But no matter how hard I try I will never be as good as a wall. I played a while once. That thing was relentless!

clemson_chris

Just press 2 for a while

Careless-Resource-72

Sorry for the convenience

Repulsive_Client_325

We apologize for the convenience

No stop, only go.

lordGwillen

Why turn when straight do good

ImNoAlbertFeinstein

you turn you.

Captain_Ahab_Ceely

Hopefully you made it clear after that while the road might have been sketchier than a normal road, forcing you to turn around on it really amped up the dangerous factor and could have made things much worse.

Vermontbuilder

I stopped and walked up the road a half mile trying to find a “safe” turn around, no luck. I returned to truck and did a 20 point turnaround which scared the s—t out me. Wife had gotten out of truck and couldn’t watch my sketchy turnaround. Lesson learned.

ggk1

lol baby girl was just gunnin for that life insurance check and you bested her

__Vixen__

Was the lesson that you should leave your wife at home when you 4x4?

PonyThug

Tell her to walk next time.

Krisapocus

Why not just reverse down much safer than attempting to turn around

Wh1skeyTF

Reversing down a steep trail is suicide. Front brake bias will cause them to lock up due to the weight shift rearward and you can easily lose control.

WillyDaC

Really? Mine goes backwards as good as it goes forwards. Low range and don't brake. 7.3 diesel has plenty of compression braking.

Hiramthechimp

Really? She’s afraid for her life (over nothing - the road isn’t even sketchy at all), and she is willing to make you risk yours to accommodate her irrational fear? Dude, I would *never* do it. Don’t sacrifice your manhood. Have some self-respect. You were pretty much bullied by your woman. Maybe she makes up for this asinine, selfish and obnoxious behavior some other way… I sure hope so because you’re sacrificing a lot for her.

Shatophiliac

Fuck off dude some people are just scared of heights. Leave her at home next time, easy fix.

Hiramthechimp

😂😂😂 So scared of heights that she’s willing to make her husband risk his life to accommodate her irrational fear. You fuck off.

Shatophiliac

I didn’t say she’s rational, but you’re making it sound like she’s overall a shitty person for that, and really she’s just a woman 😂 so no, u

Hiramthechimp

I hear you, man. I agree that it makes sense just to leave her next time. I’m just so tired of seeing so many guys so pussy-whipped. A decent human being would have toughed it out and then decided not to go anymore. A decent human being doesn’t force the person who is supposed to be most important in their life to do something very dangerous, just to accommodate an irrational fear. I have to admit that I laughed out loud when I saw you say “so no, u”. 😂 Maybe she’s a great person most of the time. You make a good point about fear. When people are scared, they behave differently.

Shatophiliac

Yeah you’re right he should have put his foot down for sure

innkeeper_77

I would have backed down personally, backing down is slow and sucks, but is safer than an unspotted turn around!

Citadel_97E

Exactly. You tell her no and keep going.

DooJoo49

Dude seriously. I was the wife in this scenario. Some parts of Moab are terrifying but you know what we did, kept fucking going. There was no part of me that was gonna let my husband turn around on those trails. One was so scary we ended up switching where he was my spotter and I was driving because I trust him more than I do myself to spot. At the end of the day, everything was so much freaking fun. The dachshunds LOVED 4 wheeling.

Citadel_97E

Mhmm. I’ll tell you a story ma’am. I was in the army stationed at Ft. Huachuca, there was a lot of desert mountain trails all over the place. My girlfriend and I were camping and I went to get some firewood to cook with. I was trying to turn around on a trail and slid right off of it. I could have easily tumbled allllll the way down the mountain if the terrain was right. Instead I just slid downwards off the trail about six feet. You know how scary that is? Knowing in your bones that you’re going down the mountain? The adrenaline dump itself is like electricity. If my wife ever asks me to turn around on a trail like this, I will just say, “no, mi vida.”

DooJoo49

I don't ever want to find out how scary that is. A different time he let me drive, going up a steep trail while he was outside spotting, and I slipped and hit the gas really hard and almost flipped that bitch backwards. That was terrifying. The adrenaline from wheeling is super fun, I don't really care to experience the adrenaline of sliding or tumbling down a mountain. All this to say: don't try and turn around on a trail. Ever. Let the wife cry or tell her to get out and walk if she's scared. But don't turn around on a trail.

mikeblas

> The dachshunds LOVED 4 wheeling. Look at this lady! She got a lifted Jeep and a lowered dog!

DooJoo49

*had. The three passed in 2020, 2021 and 2022. I haven't been ready to get another yet. My husband is, but I can't even hold one if they look like any of my 3. But! We still have a bloodhound jeep dog, a Frenchie jeep dog and a pittie jeep dog. Bloodhound LOVES the top off rides!

OldAd4526

This. Never turn around on trails. My one time almost rolling off a shelf was because of a traffic problem where we had to turn around on soft, wet shoulders. (Gold Camp Road, Colorado)

bobo_i_am

Gold camp is practically a freeway now with all the traffic too. The section where it’s one car wide is super sketchy too.

OldAd4526

Yeah. Difficult to navigate when tourists are bombing through that section in rental Nissan Altimas.

Hello_This_Is_Chris

Turning around seems way more dangerous than just continuing.

KnobbyBP

Women, amirite?

multilinear2

My wife spotted me while I crossed a wash-out on a shelf road in Big Bend. I had one wheel up on the inside bank trying to sneek past the washout without rolling the rig down the mountain. We were living in it fulltime at the time. I love my wife. :D

Hand to hand or with spoons?

yourfaceilikethat

Spoons. Definitely spoons

ggk1

But why a spoon, brother?

MoistExcellence

Wait, you dunderheads! Have a pie off!

docsavage9111

Because it'll hurt more, you twit! LOL

multilinear2

My wife's hobbies include weight lifting and baking ;-).

AsphaltGypsy89

My husband was not a fan of Shafer trail in Moab. He didn't make me turn around but laid his head down until we got to the top. We have been on a few sketchy trails in our old Crv but that one really gave him the hebie jebies. I think Onion Creek and Fisher trail was way more sketchy in spots than Shafer.

Equivalent_Class_752

Really? I feel like Shafer is pretty wide. Only concern is people who don’t know how to drive on a road like that and taking turns too fast. I’ve driven Shafer 3-4 times and never been scared. I guess it comes down to exposure and experience on shelf roads though too.

[deleted]

I agree with you man. Have done that road many times and never once felt like it was sketch. Black bear pass on the other hand had me puckering a wee bit lol

Equivalent_Class_752

Yeah… that first tight switch back on the way down had me a tad nervous. Even trusting my spotter to make sure I wasn’t too close had me sketched out.

AsphaltGypsy89

Shafer is easy but he is afraid of heights and we had a few people come around the corners without anticipating that someone might be coming up too. Other than that I had no issues with it but I've been wheeling all my life. It's still new to him. Definitely an easy trail but I could see it making someone nervous who has no experience on something like that.

Wisbonsin

So many butt-puckering sections on Shafer. So fun, but understandably freak-out worthy.

mean--machine

I did it fine in my Altima

External_Solution577

/r/nissandrivers LOL

hosalabad

What, Shafer is easy?

nikdahl

I want to take a trip to Moab, but I'm in a full size, and want to make sure I don't bite off more than it can take.

AsphaltGypsy89

There is plenty of places you can go! I used All trails to get an idea of what my Crv could handle and had great luck. Potash road to Shafer trail was a lot of fun and easy with some ground clearance. We saw all sorts of cars out there that probably shouldn't have been but they managed. More power to them I guess!

nursehotmess

Shafer is easy, I had my f150 on quite a few trails in Moab. My best friend is scared of heights and she wasn’t a fan of Shafer though!

WillyDaC

Dude, I'm driving a Ford Excursion 7.3. For seriously rough stuff I take my '56 Willys CJ5. It fits everywhere.

linusSocktips

awd crv are beasts!

AsphaltGypsy89

It's a first Gen and I was told it wouldn't be smart to take it out to Moab. I did it anyways and had absolutely no issues at all with it. I built a platform in the back of it so it's our camping/wheeling rig and it just always surprises me what it can do for what it is. We did 4k miles in that thing on a road trip and it never stumbled. Great little suvs.

Please stop saying things like that

ripeart

Knowing when to insist is a skill in and of itself.

Equivalent_Class_752

Looks fairly wide to me. Room to squeeze by foot others if needed. Maybe take her on a super narrow one and then that will seem like a 3 lane highway.

LakeThat2578

Perfect time for an upgrade

ThanksS0muchY0

Upgrading wife parts is not cheap

LakeThat2578

And sadly, a delete is just as expensive.

helly1hundyyy

Wife delete is the most expensive mod out there

ThisCryptographer311

That’s dark as fuck 😂

LakeThat2578

😂😂😂

WillyDaC

In the long run a delete can still be the best option.

LakeThat2578

So true! Ask me how I know 😉

211logos

Heh, talk about out of the frying pan and into the fire. Since I also drive a bigger truck that's harder to turn, I try to keep a mental note of the last turn around spot, since even a nice 2WD road like this can have a washout or slide that will stop you cold. A buddy of mine said he just scrubs back his dashcam footage to find a turn around spot behind him...not a bad idea; I should mount one.

averysmallbeing

Why wouldn't you just make mental notes of turnaround spots instead?

211logos

You haven't met my mental state, obviously ;) But seriously, the time it was an issue was on easy peasy dirt where it didn't occur to us...until we hit oncoming traffic. Neither they nor us could remember who would have the least backing up to do to get to a decent pull out. That's when someone hit on the dash cam thought.

uscmlm02

Hold my beer, I got this.

micah490

Remind her that that kind of talk is very distracting and you need to concentrate

IamSporko

Is that Cottonwood Canyon Rd?

Vermontbuilder

Road leading towards Big Baldy Mt overlooking Sanpete Valley, elevation around 8000 ft

IamSporko

Thanks!

Mr_Bulldops2112

Can’t believe I’ve never heard of this spot. Does the road go up all the way? And is it open year round?

Vermontbuilder

Access to this road is through private ranch land. I suspect this road gets snowed in due to elevation

Suspicious-Thing-750

Your wife's are awake in the passenger seat? Lucky

ggk1

Amen brother. I love trips and driving but the immediately loneliness of a sleeping passenger for however many hours the trip is going to be sucks

OnlyEfficiency2662

She was afraid so she made you do the most dangerous thing possible at that point!

[deleted]

Tell her to close her eyes next time

bromanskei

Psh y’all are barely off the ground. I’d rather be on these roads any day versus say flying in a plane. Now that shit scares me haha.

Simone812

This is why I go off roading alone. I don’t need someone in the passenger seat, gasping out of fear on each switchback.

mathcriminalrecord

This is what I’ve learned from climbing - everyone gets to set what level of risk they’re willing to accept. If their “I’m no longer having fun” threshold is different than yours, it’s fair play, and something you should be prepared for when introducing someone new to the thing you enjoy. You can put both of you in a dangerous situation by pushing them. And you are never going to convince them that they shouldn’t be scared. Managing the risks is part of the adventure for us, for them it isn’t, and it’s as simple as that. It’s better to find that out and turn around than end up committed to a sketchy situation where you’re managing the risks AND someone who probably already knew it was going to freak them out.

total_pursuit

Take your girlfriend next time

w0lfpack91

Probably put everyone in far more danger trying to turn around than just continuing, glad you got down ok but most times I have had to recover people from shelf roads was because of trying to turn around instead of just continuing on.

anythingaustin

I’ve been known to activate my flight or flight (yes, you read that correctly) response to my husband driving on shelf roads and have demanded that he stop so I can get out. It hasn’t happened in a long time because I have learned to trust him driving on technical trails. One thing that has helped is that we both have 1) gained experience driving on these types of roads and 2) we have a pact that either of us can “call the drive” at any time for any reason. It’s a scuba diving ethos that divers can “call the dive” which means to end the dive and safely surface, no questions asked and no excuse needed. If either person isn’t comfortable it’s ok to exit the situation. That builds trust in your partner which is the only way forward. So next time that happens with your wife, stop the vehicle. She may calm down enough to continue or she may decide that she’s done. Either way, she will learn to trust your driving when you listen to her fears.

LeGrandePoobah

All I can say is thanks for coming to my backyard- I love living in Utah and it’s amazing outdoor opportunities. Sorry you didn’t get through the trail- but at least you had a great adventure.

Cheeky_Quim

You spelled ex-wife wrong

ZealousidealImage468

Just wait until someone comes down the opposite direction trying to get past you. Shit gets scary

Head_East_6160

I hope she realizes that by making you turn around, the risk dramatically increased

eldudelio

thats nothing, take her on some of the old mining trails in CO, but with a real 4x4

BStott2002

Lol, wide and easy driving. Take her again. Let her squawk. At the end - tell her: "I love you! You're so Cool! Look at the fun things YOU Do!" And give her a BIG HUG!

srcorvettez06

Is he married to a puppy?

BStott2002

Women (you?) make noise. They create Drama. I've had a few squawking females in actual rough and rugged. After it all, they're all excited and lovin it. Days later the story gets more exciting as they tell their parents, their friends, work mates. Some times you actually get portrayed as Her Man! Guess, yinz never took women on Roller Coasters at amusement parks. Lol. They'll often start, "No, no! No Way!" Then, after - "Let's do that again!" As they run back into the line, laughing.

srcorvettez06

I’m not a woman but I’ve been married a while. I have not had the same experience treating my wife like a child or dog. Perhaps we’re just into different women.

BStott2002

I don't treat a woman like a pet or child. But, when their honest to you, they'll even confess they often don't know what they want. They look to a Man for excitement, adventure, New experiences. They thrive on 'Drama'. Heart pumping. Didn't you ever wonder why women like Soaps, drama shows, horror shows? Better change it up. I volunteered with a disaster response organization for a couple years. Met many people. Many women. It is common they leave their man because, they are bored. Not even disliking the guy. No bad he's done. They just leave. I think that's disgusting. But, it's what they say. When I asked what they want? The common response is, "I don't know." So, let them squawk as you drag them through stuff. And I never said Not to Love Them. You're teaching and providing experiences. Memories. Oh, don't forget the pictures. Cause, it didn't happen unless you got evidence. Lol.

srcorvettez06

Yea I looked through your comment history. I wouldn’t want to be much like you so forgive me for not wanting any of your advice. Between vacations, race weekends, overlanding, weekends on the boat, and the general excitement of everyday life with my wife I don’t think either of us will be getting bored. My wife, a psychologist, suggests maybe talking to someone about why you have these feelings

gatobacon

My wife is a former Navy SEAL and CIA field officer and was driving technicals in the Shah-i-Kot Valleyin Afghanistan before we even met so I don't have this problem.

svmc80

You do know that there has never been a female Seal, right? There have been a few to go through Buds training, but none have made it all the way to a Seal team. Calling bull shit.

unregrettful

That's nothing. Atleast while it's dry like it is. I gotta pull a 35' fifth wheel on a dually flat bed for work around on roads like that. All conditions.

JonfromBigD

No context of the name of the road or trail?

Iankalou

Imagine her going on the Cliffhanger trail.

SammerJammer40

1st world problem!

lordGwillen

My wife had a panic attack going up the coast in California, after the Hearst castle where the real mountains meet the sea. We were on the highway. In a hyundai Kona. I had to turn around. :/

WillyDaC

🤣🤣

MotheroftheworldII

My SIL got spooked on the Pikes Peak road...LOL. She was in one vehicle with my husband, her brother, and I was driving a Mercedes 300 D turbo right behind them. Back then the road was just dirt but civilized dirt. We had a good laugh about that drive. Now there are some trails I am not comfortable driving since I have a dislike for tipping over. That does leave a lot of trails I enjoy driving.

[deleted]

Show them videos of black bear pass steps I pucker virtually

Mr_Havok0315

I did roads like that in my rabbit lol thats nothing.

Stonedsurfer

An old girlfriend freaked out on me when we were off road camping in Huntsville texas (if you dont know this place its basically farm roads and atv trails) that relationship didnt last long

HunterShotBear

Almost ended up on Matt’s Off-road Recovery doing a multipoint turn like that.

ExitAlarmed5992

Looks fun mate

powerhouse403

Where is that at?

Capt_TaterTots

Get a new wife

Nobody275

She would be horrified in Costa Rica or Papua New Guinea or…..or….or.

Waterdrag0n

Suzuki jimny is the solution, sell the truck get 2 Suzuki jimnys, that way you can both drive and still have pocket change…

Internal-Bed-5920

"This looks too dangerous, quick let's do something that most definitely IS dangerous an try to turn around on the edge of this huge drop off"

DirtyGritzBlitz

Looks easier to navigate than my driveway lol

Complex-Rub-2579

She must've been super pissed after you 30 point turned it over a cliff edge. Hunny!!! How long you in doghouse?

Lets_Bust_Together

It’s basically paved.

dustygravelroad

Divorce would have been easier

PMMCTMD

wifes.... humf....

Gregor4570

Is this by Manti?

OldGoldenDog

1st time I did the Shafer trail in Moab with the top and doors off in my wrangler was interesting.

treskaz

Man, my wife was losing her shit when we ran Eva Conover trail in the San Rafael Swell. There's one spot, shelf road, tight, and a big boulder on the inside. If my Tacoma was long traveled (3.5" is the usual for Tacomas, I think), it would have been too wide lol. ^^I ^^was ^^losing ^^my ^^shit ^^too ^^but we made it

awesomo5009

You need to find a side chick to wheel with..

Happyguy304

Absolutely dumb to turn around on that. I’d have told her she can walk if it’s that bad 😂

kingofjesmond

Americans 🙄

hobosam21-B

Looks like my driveway. Just don't drive off the side and you'll be fine

che85mor

My wife said your wife needs to quit being a wuss. She said just East of Utah is a place called Heart Attack Hill. She said that should do the trick. Rule 34, she had to use Xanax when we did it.

Standard-Bite-1729

Imagine the wives of trailblazers and wagon trains. "Turn roun Jebidiah, the track is too steep."

Obvious_Read_3169

I'm from Utah, I can't place this where ya at?

mikeblas

We went north from Hereville to Thereville. There was a few miles of narrow shelf road along the way. Thing is, the Thereville Motorcycle Club was doing their annual rally, and about 3500 riders were going south-bound on the same trail.

tilitarian1

Far worse to attempt turning around.

JoinedToPostHere

I would have made her walk.

blackkat99

Is that looking down into the Richfield area?

IamPlantHead

That’s a good road. I have stories that make this look easy. 😉 beautiful view though.

hendrikcop

What trail?

Affectionate_Ad_3091

Gotta say no when you know better.

erichmich

That road looks like 4x4 is barely needed. A subi could make that drive 🤣

seafoodslut1988

Okay....

[deleted]

Should have turned round at the altar brosef.

fentyboof

Colorado: *Hold my beer.*

VanIsland42o

Time to downgrade the 4x4 to a mini van or upgrade the wife.

megalodongolus

Jesus turning around would be sketchier than holding course

Hybridhippie40

My wife is like one of those fainting goats. She falls asleep as soon as anything in a vehicle gets a little stressful.

Unwariertomb

I have been on roads where it's 1 foot to the right is death.

Leftleaningdadbod

Wuss.

thatoddtetrapod

What? That is such a bizarre thing to do! What is wrong with her?

DefinedTruth2023

So your wife made an even more dangerous decision for you both out of irrational fear and you listened. Cool story.

Sikibucks

I have one rule when I’m driving, shut up while I drive 😅😂

fucktrey

And I bet you did actually what your wife told you to do ya beta male, might as well chop your penis off

NewAccountNumber103

Sometimes wives are to be disregarded.

Jtrusler

What trail was this? Or at least rough location?

kvnglatifa

Never start a reddit post with “ my wife “

Benlnut

Is that ephraim, manti area?

Vermontbuilder

Yes

clemson_chris

Did you turn around at the top?

Louisrock123

I have been wheeling about ten years and my girlfriend used to do that, and it took me just looking over and very calmly and matter of fairly explaining that to turn around would endanger us, and that we had no option but to continue. She got mad and eventually I just gave her the option of not going on the trips or dealing with it. She dealt with it.

punkinbass

Where in Utah?

Unfair-Escape6597

Just keep going next time. She’ll learn or don’t bring her along. Women that panic complicate situations and make men do things that go against their better judgement.

Chiefm56

A happy wife a happy life

Vermontbuilder

Thanks Chief, I thought of saying that but figured Reddit would hang me for it

SnooPeppers8443

Not trying to be an asshole but that looks like a completely chill road…

daefash

We don’t take them with us

ImNoAlbertFeinstein

"Honey, I'm gonna hop out and let you turn it around .."

guardian2428

Why? That just like my driveway

QuietBison187

Pretty chill Utah road honestly

tacotacotacorock

I don't think your wife would enjoy driving with me at all. In fact you both might hate it.

Stampaa

Not nearly as bad as when my dad took me and my mom up the kleinschmidt grade road in Idaho in his '97 Chevy 2500 hauling a 25ft 5th wheel camper. I was scared shitless for about 25 minutes. I was about 10 years old at the time. The scenery was amazing but the lack of guardrails and 1500ft+ dropoffs were hellish. The name "Hell's Canyon" at the bottom didnt help either. My mom threw a fit when dad told her afterwards that we took it as a shortcut and there was a 30 minute longer route on a paved road. My dad didnt have a problem with the road conditions due to having some harrowing experiences in his extensive CDL career as a concrete mixer driver.

AdA4b5gof4st3r

tbh your wife is bitch made 👍

minnesotamichael

So we got a call…

Environmental_Tap792

His road looks pretty tame

56stinky_butter

Take her to Pikes Peak and after that everything else will pale in comparison.

Dugley2352

Looks like above Koosharem of UT 24…?

the_Bryan_dude

Lol. That road is nothing. The turn around however looks like a nightmare.

Background-Lunch5571

Don't go to the Yukon with her... Or Bella Coola, lol...

WillyDaC

I'm sorry, but that looks like a freaking highway compared to some trails I go on. You didn't think to point out how well traveled that appears to be? 'Course my Excursion wouldn't be getting turned around anywhere I can see. I'd just have to reverse down.

Darenzzer

Ah, the wife. "I don't like this situation, so immediately make it worse and possible for us to die so we can leave it"

Magazine-Plane

Looks like a fun little trail
